NFL Handicapping: A look at this weekend's four Divisional Round matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta’s offense was both visually and statistically (33.8 ppg and 415.8 ypg) dominant for much of the season. They play host to a Seattle defense that obviously has a strong pedigree, particularly in the secondary. But that dominant secondary has been exposed at times this year and was recently dealt a key injury with Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas out. Detroit couldn’t take advantage of Thomas’ absence as it was clear Matthew Stafford was not 100 percent due to a dislocated finger. And the Lions’ offensive line was banged up and missing two starters. In the end, the Seahawks surrendered only 231 total yards. It will be a much more difficult task this weekend as Atlanta’s offense is in a far better position to successfully move the football. Matt Ryan (38 TDs, 7 INTs, 69.9% completion rate) has a host of skill position weapons and like we saw against Arizona and Green Bay, Seattle can be exposed through the air. There are questions about Atlanta’s defense which ranked in the bottom third of the league in a number of categories. After struggling to run the football for virtually the entire regular season, Thomas Rawls went for 161 yards against Read more

NFL Gambling: Previewing all four Wild Card round matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saturday’s Oakland-Houston matchup is likely to be decided by which team can produce adequate quarterback play. Derek Carr suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16 against Indianapolis and in Sunday’s loss to Denver, Matt McGloin left the game with a left shoulder injury and is highly doubtful. That means bettors are likely to see rookie Connor Cook under center for a Raiders team playing in their first playoff game since 2002. Things aren’t much clearer for Houston with Tom Savage experiencing concussion symptoms and currently questionable. Savage’s status essentially forced Bill O’Brien into going back to the well with Brock Osweiler. Oakland had a noticeable lack of spirit in the loss to Denver despite having a with a chance to win the AFC West and earn a first round bye. The Raiders were physically manhandled by a Broncos team that was already eliminated from the playoffs. The biggest handicapping factor for this game is whether or not Oakland has the belief it can win a playoff game after seeing its top two quarterbacks go down with injuries. It makes sense why the total in this game is the lowest of the four games this weekend with most Read more

NFL Gambling: Buffalo and Carolina appear headed in the wrong direction following Week 13 losses

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Up 24-9 and seemingly on their way to an impressive road win at Oakland, the Buffalo Bills melted down in a big way as the Raiders closed the game with four unanswered touchdowns. The end result was a 38-24 loss which dropped the Bills to 6-6 and put the team in the position of likely needing to “win out” in order to reach the playoffs. As for Sunday’s game, Buffalo led by 15 points midway through the third quarter behind a bend-but-don’t-break defense that held Oakland to three field goals. But the defense wilted and Oakland started moving the football with ease as Derek Carr hit on multiple big plays to Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. Buffalo’s 24-9 lead turned into a 30-24 deficit with the nail in the coffin coming when Tyrod Taylor was hit as he threw the football from his own end zone and the ball was picked off giving Oakland instant field position en route to yet another touchdown. The Bills are now two games behind the final Wild Card spot in the AFC. Their schedule to finish the season is manageable with three home games in a row as they host Pittsburgh this week followed by Cleveland and Miami. They close out the regular season Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Carolina Panthers at Seattle Seahawks

Carolina at Seattle
Sunday, 5:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -6.5 O/U 45
CRIS Current: Seattle -7.5 O/U 44
Recommendation: Under

Great quarterbacks can only play like great quarterbacks when they have some semblance of an offensive line to protect them.  When these two teams met twice last year, both offensive lines were in good shape.  Russell Wilson and Cam Newton had a running game that balanced their downfield passing attack.  Seattle scored 23 and 24 points in those two games, but they lost them both in SU fashion, cashing a pair of Over tickets in the process.

That was then.  This is now.  The Seahawks offensive line is in complete disarray right now.  Three rookies started on that OL last week.  They’ll be starting their fifth different combo of offensive linemen this week.  Offensive coordinator Darrel Bevell, talking about the struggles of his OL:“We are just trying to find the best five guys. If it changes every week, then it changes every week.”

Russell Wilson got sacked six times last week, but it Read more

NFL Gambling News: Tampa Bay surges, Cincinnati continues to regress

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After beating Atlanta outright as a road underdog in Week 1, Tampa Bay spent the better part of the next two months playing unpredictable football. They were outclassed by Arizona, Denver, and in the second meeting against the Falcons and headed into Week 10 as a home underdog to bottom feeder Chicago. Lose that game and drop to 3-6 with tough upcoming games at Kansas City and home vs. Seattle. Instead, the Bucs cruised past the Bears and then stole one last week with a 19-17 win over the Chiefs. I don’t think it is a coincidence that this mini two-game winning streak coincides with the return of running back Doug Martin. Martin is an excellent multipurpose back that can block and catch the ball out of the backfield. Tampa is now 3-0 SU and ATS with Martin on the field and his presence has provided Jameis Winston with more options both vertically and underneath. Winston had some early season struggles, particularly with bad decision making, but over his last three games he flashes a 7-1 TD-to-INT ratio. Tampa Bay’s time of possession numbers have skyrocketed with the Bucs possessing the ball for 37 minutes against Chicago and 35 minutes against Kansas City. Again, this Read more

NFL Gambling News: Can the Minnesota Vikings continue to cover pointspreads?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From 2010-13, the Minnesota Vikings were a middling organization with only one playoff appearance (2012) and three very unmemorable seasons under former head coach Leslie Frazier. Following Frazier’s departure, the team went out and hired highly respected Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. The organization also selected quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in the first round of the 2014 draft. Bridgewater assumed the starting spot in Minnesota’s fourth game after Matt Cassel was placed on injured reserve with a broken foot. The Vikings took their lumps and finished the season an unassuming 7-9 but it was clear that Zimmer was a difference maker. In the NFL, straight up wins and losses are largely correlated to a team’s pointspread success. The fact the Minnesota won only seven games but posted a 10-6 against the spread record was for bettors, a positive sign.

The lumps of 2014 paid off in spade as Minnesota skyrocketed to an 11-5 record including the NFC North division crown the following year. What’s even more amazing is the rate in which this team covered numbers. The Vikings went 4-1 ATS in the preseason and 14-3 ATS in the regular season Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Handicapping the NFL post-Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 1 of the NFL season routinely tells lies.  The goal of any winning handicapper has to be figuring out which teams were lying in their Week 1 performances.

Look no further than last year for some excellent examples.  On opening day of the 2015 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans blew out Tampa Bay 42-14.  Marcus Mariota looked like a superstar, throwing four TD passes in his NFL debut and finishing the game with a perfect passer rating.

If you bet the Titans the following week, you watched them lose outright by two touchdowns to the NFL’s worst team, Cleveland.   Mariota threw only five TD passes over the next four weeks before getting hurt.  Tennessee finished the season tied for the worst pointspread record in the NFL, cashing only three winning bets in their final 15 games.  The Titans lied to us in Week 1.

Remember when the Dolphins beat the Redskins, and covered as four point road favorites in Washington, thanks to a Jarvis Landry punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter.    Miami lost their next three games so badly that head coach Joe Philbin didn’t survive their bye Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Dolphins at Seattle Seahawks

Miami at Seattle
Sunday, 1 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -7 O/U 44
CRIS Current: Seattle -10.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Miami

The Seahawks have been an elite team for the last five years of the Pete Carroll era.  But Carroll’s teams tend to pick up momentum as the season goes along, not right from the get-go on opening day.  The Seahawks have lost in straight up fashion on opening day three times in the last five years; twice as favorites.  Only once – their Thursday Night opener against Green Bay following their Super Bowl title – have they won on opening day by more than a touchdown.  The Seahawks are not a team to lay double digits with coming out of the gate in 2016.

The betting markets continue to look at Seattle as a team without weaknesses.  But one weakness has been very apparent if you’ve been paying attention to the Seahawks throughout the preseason – their offensive line.  Offensive line coach Tom Cable has been trying to cobble together a unit that won’t have a single starter playing the same position as Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Ranking all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 1

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL Preseason is in the rear view mirror, with Week 1 kicking off on Thursday as Carolina travels to Denver as -3 road favorites.  Here’s how I have all 32 teams ranked heading into the regular season.

1. Carolina Panthers  - Cam Newton and Carolina’s offense are poised to rank among the most potent attacks in the NFL.  Watch out for the Funchess/Benjamin WR duo!

2. Seattle Seahawks - Russell Wilson gave an MVP caliber performance in 2015, but his ability to repeat that effort could be stunted by the Seahawks offensive line woes.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers come out of camp with a full complement of healthy weapons for Aaron Rodgers, good news after Rodgers numbers took a big hit without Jordy Nelson last year.

4. Arizona Cardinals - Arizona returns just about every key player on both sides of the ball from a team that ranked among the NFL’s elite in 2015.

5. New England Patriots - If Tom Brady was at quarterback, this team would be ranked #1.  But with Jimmy Garappolo behind center, the Pats take a modest tumble in my rankings.

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Andy Reid’s Read more
