College Football Betting Update: SMU announces GA will call plays in Frisco Bowl

12.15.2017     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Here's your daily "WTF is going on with this Frisco Bowl matchup" nugget. SMU's newly appointed head coach, Sonny Dykes, announced that graduate assistant G.J. Kinne will call plays.

New head coach Sonny Dykes runs an Air Raid offense, not Morris' power-spread attack, so the responsibility of calling plays falls into the hands of Kinne, who worked mostly with the offensive line during his first season at SMU.

Hicks, who is playing a large role in SMU's game-planning for the Frisco Bowl, said that he will have some freedom to make his own decisions at the line of scrimmage while Kinne monitors from above.

"He's going to be upstairs and he's going to try to script most of our plays," Hicks explained. "Then I have range to kind of do what I like to do. But he knows what I want and I

College Football Betting: Dykes to coach SMU against former team in Frisco Bowl

12.13.2017     10:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is gonna be uncomfortable. Following the departure of Chad Morris to Arkansas, SMU hired former Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes. Dykes, who most recently was an "analyst" for TCU, will reportedly coach the Mustangs in the Frisco Bowl against...Louisiana Tech. And making things even more awkward is that a few current SMU players wanted assistant Jeff Taylor to take over for Morris. Taylor was originally the "interim" but once the school hired Dykes, he bolted to Arkansas with Morris. Not knowing what to make of the situation, bettors literally haven't touched the game with CRIS's Dec. 4 opener of SMU -5 and a total of 70 still pasted across the board offshore.

“We want to continue to build on the success and the blueprint that Chad started. The most important thing we can do is get off to a good start by winning a bowl game,” Dykes said.

CRIS Current: Ole Miss -3.5 O/U 71.5
Recommendation: Under

California's defense is not going to be fixed overnight. The bad recruiting, bad coaching, and bad habits from the Sonny Dykes era are bound to linger. The good news is through two games, the Golden Bears are nearly a yard per play better than last season. And while last week's win over FCS Weber State doesn't look all that impressive (the Wildcats rolled up 571 yards), I look more to Week 1's results as Cal went on the road and held North Carolina to less than 5 yards per play. The Tar Heels lost a lot of offensive firepower but they also managed to hang 35 points and 6.5 yards per play the following week against Louisville.

Back in 2014 and 2015, Ole Miss' defense was a top-tier unit as it posted season averages of 4.7 and 4.9 yards per allowed, respectively. They took a big step back last year as teams rolled up over 6 yards per play and the Rebels finished a dismal 5-7. This year's unit has been average thus far as Read more

The overhaul at California is enormous. The Golden Bears have a new Head Coach in Justin Wilcox who is defensive minded which is the polar opposite of his predecessor Sonny Dykes. There is a new offensive system which is an up-tempo “spread” but very different from the “Bear Raid” employed here the past four seasons. Ex-Eastern Washington OC Beau Baldwin’s scheme is far more multiple and unlike the prior offense run here, it comes with a complex playbook. On the other side of the ball, Cal has scrapped the 4-3 in favor of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 alignment. The switch brings position changes, new assignments and the possibility that the talent on hand doesn’t completely fit the way it will down the road after a couple of more recruiting classes. While on paper 2017 does not look to be a great defensive season for California, it likely can’t be Read more

College Football Handicapping: Cal defense should improve under Wilcox and DeRuyter

08.17.2017     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's a massive cleanup needed in Berkeley after Cal cut ties with Sonny Dykes and brought in longtime and well respected defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. Wilcox's first job is to fix a defense that was one of the nation's worst units (42.6 ppg allowed last season). Under Dykes, opposing teams scored 40 or more 55 percent of the time. Wilcox hired former Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter to serve as defensive coordinator. In two seasons as DC at Texas A&M, the Aggies ranked inside the top 20 nationally in yards per play allowed. And during his first season as head coach at Fresno State, DeRuyter's stop unit ranked second in the Mountain West in yards per game (338.5) and play (4.73) allowed. If anything, it's clear that this year's squad will put a bit more stock into stopping the opposition.

“We weren’t used to the head coach being in defensive meetings,” senior cornerback Darius Allensworth said. “Maybe a couple times, but Coach Wilcox pokes his head in the DBs room almost every

College Football Gambling: A quick look at first-year coordinators

06.01.2017     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday we posted a chart on all of the head coach changes for the upcoming college football season. More often than not, with new coaches comes new coordinators. Below is a list of some of the more prominent names.

California - The Golden Bears appear to be going in the opposite direction of former head coach Sonny Dykes' "all offense, no defense" system. First-year head coach Justin Wilcox has been a DC for much of his career and brought along longtime Air Force HC Tim DeRuyter to serve as DC. Beau Baldwin, who turned Eastern Washington into a FCS powerhouse, was named OC.

UConn - It's been years since the Huskies posted even average offensive numbers. Randy Edsall return to Storrs and looks for former Auburn OC Rhett Lashlee to help turn things around.

Florida Atlantic - Not shy about turmoil, Lane Kiffin went ahead and picked up former Baylor OC Kendal Briles to run the offense. Kiffin has been candid about saying Briles will have "complete control" of the play calling. That is until the Owls fail to score a touchdown Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Washington Huskies at California Golden Bears

Washington at California

CRIS Opener:
Washington -15.5 O/U 77.5
CRIS Current: Washington -17 O/U 76.5
Recommendation: California

There was a time, earlier in my handicapping career when I was fixated on taking strong defensive underdogs in college football; teams that could cover pointspreads without having to put up touchdowns in bunches. But that era of college football ended (without much fan fare from the betting markets), with the advent of the high octane spread offense, like the one Sonny Dykes is running at Cal these days.

In the football universe circa 2016, my entire thought process involving bigger underdogs has flipped from where it was 15 years ago.  In the modern world, I want my underdogs to be able to score early and often, even if they are defensively weak.  Teams that can put up points in bunches tend to be live underdogs, capable of trading points OR coming through the backdoor should they struggle early.

Underdogs of seven points or more are 4-1 ATS in Cal games this year, with the Bears unable to cover bigger Read more
