College Football Handicapping: Betting totals with the four FCS newcomers

09.28.2012     02:15 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With either three or four games under their belts and conference play either beginning or right around the corner, this seems like a good time to examine the four first-year FCS teams from a totals perspective.

Massachusetts – The Minutemen have been simply abysmal on each side of the ball. Their 263.3 total yards offense per game has resulted in an average of 8.8 points scored while the 492.8 yards they’ve allowed has produced 43.0 points per game for their opponents. The one noticeable thing about UMass statistically is that they don’t do anything well. The closing totals on their four games have ranged from 47-55 with two going over and two staying under. Except for a trip to Vanderbilt the last week of October, all Massachusetts games will be against MAC opponents. This team is scoring one point for every 30 yards gained and against two of the nation’s worst defenses (Indiana and Miami-Ohio) those ratios were 1/44.0 and 1/29.4 respectively. The inept offense seems to be a larger factor in their current total of 54 this week versus offensive power Ohio. If the oddsmakers keep UMass totals in this vicinity then my Read more

College Basketball Free Pick: Georgia Southern at South Alabama

Georgia Southern at South Alabama -7 O/U 134
Recommendation: Over

South Alabama's offense has improved this season but the stats don't really show it. The reason is the Jaguars have really run the gauntlet in terms of tough opposing defenses. So far they've faced LSU, Mississippi State, Florida State, LSU, Southern Miss and UAB. In two other games, USA played three awful offenses in Alabama State, Alcorn State and Texas A&M Corpus Christ. As a result, their body work doesn't suggest that we should be looking to play over a moderate total of 134. But tonight is really the first time all season they'll play an opponent that can score at a decent clip and that struggles to defend. Georgia Southern is another team whose numbers are skewed because of the opposition. In three games against slow paced South Florida, SMU and EKU, the game scores and possessions were very low. But against teams that don't mind getting up and down the floor (Valpo, Wake Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Injuries leave Southern Miss short on depth

Southern Miss -6.5 at South Alabama O/U 135.5

Southern Miss (5-2) has managed to survive so far but the lack of depth is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

“We’re kind of limited,” Eustachy said. “I say it every year, we’ve got a fine line between winning and losing. If we foul, we’ve got issues. If we get hurt, we’ve got issues.

“I think our team is the most together team I’ve ever had as far as liking each other. They’re taking care of each other off the court. We could beat a really good team on any given night or we could lose a pretty average team on any given night.”

College Basketball Betting: Two totals recommendations

11.17.2010     03:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rob Veno passes along some analysis on a couple of college basketball totals for this evening. The market has obviously been volatile of late but these provide some betting opportunities for those willing to shop around.

Murray State at Ole Miss OVER – Racers experienced returning group suffered through miserable 37.8% shooting night in their opener but look for a bounce back here against Mississippi. SEC contingent continues to prefer up tempo style under HC Kennedy and spark plug PG Chris Warren returned to the lineup with 26 points last Friday night. Backcourts and lack of interior ability to deter penetrators allow this one to get over the total.

South Alabama at Southern Miss OVER – Golden Eagles HC Larry Eustachy is telling anyone who will listen that his squad will increase their scoring this season and their games will be a bit higher scoring. Their 60-53 opening night victory over South Florida makes that tough to believe but Read more
