Birmingham Bowl
Texas Tech vs. South Florida
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: South Florida -2 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 O/U 65.5
Recommendation: South Florida

On paper, there looks to be plenty of potential for points in the Birmingham Bowl with a pair of squads that rank in the top 30 in both ppg and ypg. However, with a 90% chance of rain expected, conditions could impact the amount of offense that is produced. Defensively, Texas Tech made strides this season. After allowing over 7 ypp in 2016, the Red Raiders shaved off nearly 1.5 ypp. That tied into a massive 11.7 ppg allowed improvement. But this defense still had problems, particularly against upper-tier offenses. Arizona State, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma averaged over 45 ppg against the Red Raiders. In the end, TTU’s stop unit, while no longer horrific, is still well below average. You could certainly make a case that USF is on par with those four aforementioned offenses. The key for the Bulls is balance and they have that in spades with Read more

Houston at South Florida
Saturday, 12:45 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: South Florida -10 O/U 57.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -11 O/U 56.5
Recommendation: South Florida

Houston has taken a major step back during the post Tom Herman/Greg Ward Jr. era. Major Applewhite is in his first season as head coach and the Cougars are a underachieving 4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS through seven games. One of the biggest issues has been mediocre quarterback play from the duo of Kyle Allen and Kyle Postma. And once thought to be a strength, the defense has been ripped apart in each of the last two weeks giving up 40+ points in consecutive games to Tulsa and Memphis. The Cougars were able to knock off Arizona prior to the return of Khalil Tate, they beat lowly Rice, notched a 7-point win against Temple but failed to cover and were able to take down SMU by double-digits despite being outgained by 81 yards. They also failed to come up with a key stop last week against Memphis as the Tigers came from behind and stole one on the road. Houston is now on a 1-4 ATS slide and facing without question its Read more

College Football Handicapping: Illinois goes young, starts season 2-0

09.12.2017     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like Illinois head coach Lovie Smith is doing everything in his power to NOT play players left over from the Tim Beckman regime. To his credit, the Illini are off to a 2-0 start including last week's 20-6 outright win over Western Kentucky as +6 home chalk. Illinois is currently a +18 road underdog for Friday's game at South Florida.

The nine freshmen Illinois has used in its starting lineup through two games are more than any team in the country. So far, 17 true freshmen, nine redshirt freshmen, two first-time sophomores and two first-time juniors have played, making it 30 players who have made their Illini debuts in the first two games.

College Football Betting News: USF tries to maintain offensive success despite coaching change

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Charlie Strong taking over at USF for Willie Taggart, bettors are curious as to what changes will take place. Under Taggart, the Bulls averaged over 500 ypg and 40 ppg last season. One of Strong's main issues at Texas was that the offense never had an identity. Offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, who Strong brought over from Texas, has a pedigree of playing up-tempo having coached at Bowling Green and Tulsa prior to his one season in Austin. The Longhorns played much faster under Gilbert (83.3 plays per game) than they did (65.1 plays per game) in 2015.

Tulane at South Florida -5 O/U 139.5
Recommendation: Over

It's been a rough season for Tulane under first-year head coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. The Green Wave are 3-12 overall and 0-3 in AAC play; outclassed by UCF, Cincinnati and Memphis. The main issue has been defense. Despite playing a fairly soft schedule in terms of opposing offenses (304th nationally), Tulane is allowing 1.11 points per possession and an alarming 41% from three. And because of wanting to play up-tempo, only two of Tulane's games have featured less than 70 possessions. South Florida is far from competent on the offensive end but you'll notice that much of their schedule features slow paced, defensive-minded teams. The Bulls' first three AAC opponents, ECU, Houston, and SMU certainly fit that profile hence USF's outputs of 49, 56, and 65 points. But perhaps last game's 65-point effort at SMU was a sign of better things to come. It was the team's first game following the firing of Orlando Antigua. He was replaced by veteran Murry Bartow who spent much of his head coaching career at UAB and ETSU. Bartow's teams were generally fast paced and offensive-minded and I expect the Bulls to Read more

South Florida at Memphis
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
South Florida -4 O/U 75.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 O/U 73.5
Recommendation: Over

South Florida’s up-tempo offensive attack is poised to have success against Memphis on Saturday. The Bulls have yet to be held below 30 points in a game this season. They rank tops in AAC play at nearly 7 yards per play and over 500 ypg. Quarterback Quinton Flowers and running back Marlon Mack anchor what has been a very balanced attack. Of USF's nine games, they've rushed for 200+ eight times and passed for 200+ seven times. That is bad news for a Memphis defense that has struggled against better competition. In games against Tulsa, Navy, Temple, and Ole Miss, Memphis allowed 44 ppg. And against the run (USF's best attribute) Memphis checks in a dead last in AAC play at 232.8 ypg allowed. On the flip side, Memphis' offense should have no trouble moving the football either. They've hung 34, 24, 28, 30 and 51 points in their last five games. And South Florida’s defense has shown cracks in the armor of late surrendering 91 combined points and Read more

South Florida at Cincinnati
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
South Florida -6 O/U 59.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -5.5 O/U 61
Recommendation: Over

Conference opener for both teams and I expect the offenses to have the better of it. The Bulls have been rolling along quite efficiently with their up-tempo, run based spread offense; 35+ points in all four games. They’ve averaged over 7 yards per play and face a Bearcats defense that in two games against their toughest competition (Houston and Purdue) allowed 500+ total yards. USF has scored at least 35 points in eight consecutive games and at least 200 rushing yards in nine straight games dating back to last year. Even in last week’s narrow 27-20 win over Miami (OH), the Bearcats yielded nearly 6 yards per play. I don’t trust Cincinnati to neutralize South Florida’s balanced offensive attack that carved up the Bearcats for 65 points on 573 total yards last season. Quarterback Quinton Flowers and running back Marlon Mack had a field day in that contest and I think both are poised for more success here.

College Football Betting Preview: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Western Kentucky at Alabama
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -25.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Alabama -29.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Alabama

One of the themes in college football from last week was how bad the SEC looked. Seven losses in the opening weekend was the most ever for the conference, and even in victory, Florida and Tennessee struggled against lesser opponents. For a little over a quarter, it looked like Alabama was going to be part of the ugliness as they trailed USC 3-0 and failed to move the ball on offense. Three quarters later, it was apparent that Alabama was the class of the SEC and the nation after the 52-6 whipping of the Trojans.

Freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts’ entry into the game was the turning point for the Alabama offense, even though he lost a fumble on his first collegiate play. Hurts tossed two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tide piled up over 400 yards of offense in the final three quarters.

On defense, after allowing a USC field goal on their first possession, the Tide completely shut down the USC offense. The Trojans seemingly Read more
