NBA Playoff Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards at Toronto Raptors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington at Toronto -8 O/U 211
Recommendation: Toronto

The betting markets certainly aren’t sleeping on the Toronto Raptors extended stretch of playoff failures. Make no mistake about it – the Raptors have been a dismal pointspread team in the postseason throughout the Dwayne Casey era, quite literally never living up to betting market expectations.

The results do not lie. The Raptors went 3-6-1 ATS in their ten playoff games last year. They went 7-13 ATS in their 20 playoff games in 2016. In 2015, it was an 0-4 ATS Run as they got swept and in 2014, the Raptors covered only two pointspreads while getting eliminated in the first round in seven games.

When you add up all of that carnage, we’re talking about a 12-27-2 pointspread run in the postseason during the Dwayne Casey era. That includes a truly ugly run in Game 1’s: 11 SU losses in 12 tries as a franchise, including an 0-7 SU and ATS record in Game 1’s over the last four postseasons.

No surprise here that the betting public has been more than a little reluctant to put their $$ on the Raptors as big home chalk in Game 1 Read more

NBA Gambling News: Chicago Bulls claim hilarious lineups based on player rest not taking

03.07.2018     08:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like the NBA reached out to the Chicago Bulls about some of the painfully obvious tank-esque lineups they've been using. The Bulls countered by saying some of their vets need some rest. Since the All-Star break, the Bulls are 1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS. Their lone win came against fellow tankee, Dallas.

"After the All-Star break, we had communication with the league office about Robin and Justin's roles," said Bulls executive vice president John Paxson. "After healthy dialogue, the league determined that their situations fall into the 'player rest' policy. We respect the communication and cooperative dialogue with the league and will adhere to their recommendations going forward."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Creighton Bluejays at DePaul Blue Demons

Creighton -6.5 at DePaul O/U 155
Recommendation: Creighton

Since winning at St. John's, 91-74, as +7.5 underdogs, DePaul hasn't played very good basketball. They've dropped five of six both straight up and ATS; never coming close to a cover in any of the five defeats. This is a squad that is trying to compete in the Big East with arguably its best player, Max Strus, a DII transfer. Strus is solid but after averaging 23.5 ppg his first four Big East games, he's dropped off considerably including 9- and 7-point efforts his last two contests; both of which blowout losses. Creighton has a huge home game vs. Xavier on deck but I don't think they'll get caught looking ahead, especially after losing by 20 to Villanova last week. The Bluejays have had nearly a full week to rest and prepare and have had no trouble with the Blue Demons in recent meetings with wins by 11, 22, 17, and 35. Last season, DePaul's defecincies led to pointspread covers in six of its final seven regular season Big East games. The average price in those six games, however, was +13. The same deficiencies are present this season but because of two road wins against Read more

Georgetown at St. John's -6.5 O/U 148.5
Recommendation: St. John's

Georgetown and St. John’s are a combined 1-7 SU in Big East conference play. I think the spot, the price, and matchup works in favor of the Red Storm. St. John’s has struggled to adapt to life without Marcus LoVett who has missed several games due to a knee injury. LoVett is one of the team's better perimeter defenders and it's shown up in the stats as Big East teams are shooting 48% from three against the Red Storm. Georgetown, who beat up on an extremely soft non-conference slate, are one of the few Big East teams that are offensively challenge. Through four games, the Hoyas rank near the bottom in nearly every offensive category despite playing the likes of DePaul, Marquette and Butler who grade out as below average on the defensive end. Georgetown senior point guard Jonathan Mulmore is having a very rough go of it with just 13 points in four Big East games and a negative 12 assists to 13 turnovers ratio. That is the key aspect of this game for St. John’s. The Red Storm are 6th in the country in turnovers forced per game while the Hoyas have been Read more

Missouri at South Carolina -2 O/U 140
Recommendation: Under

Missouri's Cuonzo Martin and South Carolina's Frank Martin have long been coaches you can play under the total given the right circumstances. I see tonight as an opportunity with the Tigers opening SEC play and the Gamecocks off a 74-69 road loss to Ole Miss. During non-conference play, Mizzou at times showed capable on the offensive end while also willing to get up and down the floor. But against comparable competition, their scores and pace were far more moderate. Games against Iowa State, Utah, UCF, and Illinois yielded 133, 136, 121, and 134 points. They did however get caught up in a few high scoring affairs against St. John's (90-82) and West Virginia (83-79) as well as recent home contests vs. a few up-tempo mid-major squads. Interestingly, Martin's Cal team from a year ago played in only four PAC-12 games that closed higher than 140 and those were against Arizona State, UCLA, and Washington; three teams that played with tremendous pace and didn’t defend. It's pointless to use South Carolina's results from a season ago considering all of the experience and Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Baltimore Ravens vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Baltimore vs. Jacksonville
Sunday, 6:30 am PT - Yahoo.com
CRIS Opener: Baltimore -4 O/U 40.5
CRIS Current: Baltimore -4 O/U 39
Recommendation: Jacksonville

Joe Flacco missed all of preseason; one of many injured veterans for the Ravens in August. Baltimore lost nearly a dozen guys to IR in training camp, losing key bodies on both sides of the football. Flacco has looked rusty, with only 338 passing yards through two games. And he hasn’t been tested – the ravens have not yet trailed this season. The Ravens, as a team, have only one explosive play on offense through two games. They’ve rushed for under four yards per carry. And now the key to their offensive line, six time pro bowler Marshall Yanda, has been placed on injured reserve after breaking his ankle last week.

Yanda’s injury cannot be overstated. With him gone, this team is now without three of their five OL starters from last year, as well as their top two backups from a season ago. This would be a problem for any offense. It matters even more with a QB and skill position talent Read more

NFL Preseason Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore +2.5 at Miami O/U 37.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Miami Dolphins have no business as favorites in this ballgame. One of the biggest ‘red flags’ in preseason for any team – let alone a favorite – is when a coach starts whining about his injury situation. That’s exactly what Adam Gase has done this week. When a coach can’t handle any more injuries, the entire team seems to feel it, and you tend to see significantly less intensity for a meaningless August game. And Gase has been dealing with the cumulative effect of the injury bug all week, even cancelling practice on Tuesday to go through a ‘no pads’ walk through.

Gase has every reason to whine considering the state of his offensive line right now. Jay Cutler is supposed to get his first game action with Miami here, but how long he’ll be on the field is very much in question, especially given the state of the Dolphins offensive line right now. Center Mike Pouncey (hip) isn’t likely to play. Right tackle Ja’Wuan James (shoulder), has missed practices all week as has guard-center Kraig Urbik (back). Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Boston (Price) +105 at New York (Pineda) O/U 8
Recommendation: Boston

David Price spent the first two months of the season on the DL following an elbow strain in spring training. His first start back in the big leagues was a little bit rusty, lasting only five innings against the White Sox. Last time out, Price threw a seven inning gem against the Orioles, allowing just three hits in the process.

All the postgame quotes following that contest scream "bet on" for David Price moving forward. Price: "I felt good. Just trying to make better pitches. I don't want to be out there throwing 100 pitches or 90 pitches through five innings. I was back to being efficient, getting a lot of early outs and not giving up a whole lot of runs." Red Sox manager John Farrell: “He was outstanding. He was in complete control, and he got into a great rhythm.” Orioles manager Buck Showalter, after his team got dominated: “He’s one of those guys who’s adding pitches as he goes on in his career. He’s one of the best.”

Michael Pineda has a value problem. His advanced metric stats are elite, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Washington Nationals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Lynn) at Washington (Gonzalez) -135 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Washington

Promising start to the season for Washington's Gio Gonzalez who threw six scoreless innings and punched out seven batters against the Miami Marlins. No longer blessed with a plus fastball, Gonzalez has rightfully earned the rep of being all-or-nothing. He pitched far better than his 4.57 ERA last season and should continue to benefit from pitching coach Mike Maddux. Today's matchups should yield positive results as St. Louis' offensive is off to a slow start. The Cards have already been shutout twice as well as held to single run. They managed to pound around Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo but outside of that, have produced little to no offense. That includes two games against lefty starters Jon Lester and rookie Amir Garrett in which St. Louis plated only a single run.

Lance Lynn was solid in his return from Tommy John surgery. Lynn, who missed all of 2016, allowed two runs in 5.1 IP against the Cubs. He did however throw 98 pitches and recorded only five swinging strikes. His velocity, which was a concern during spring training, was also down a Read more

Dustin Johnson's injury sparks betting controversy

04.07.2017     08:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting situation went down at The Masters yesterday. Dustin Johnson screw up his back but tried to give it a go only to walk off the tee box having not attempted a stroke. That led to a lot of confusion in terms of sportsbooks refunding various bets.

"Under normal circumstances, we wouldn't give back the money, but for the last couple years, for the majors, we've decided to give back the money if a golfer doesn't tee off," said Johnny Avello, who runs that book. "It turns out to be such a hassle not to do the refund because for the next three months all you hear from those customers is about the money they lost."

"We had it for years when Tiger [Woods] didn't wind up playing, and it's not only golf. When Ole Miss got their bowl ban [in February], that didn't mean that anyone who bet on Mississippi got their money back."
