Teddy Covers' Vegas Wiseguy Report: Attacking Cantor's Opening NFL Lines

05.13.2013     11:06 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I’ve got to give Cantor Gaming a boatload of credit this week. While the vast majority of other sportsbooks around the globe collectively twiddled their thumbs following the NFL Draft, Cantor was the first major book to market with both season win totals and with pointspreads for every regular season game through Week 16. And Cantor released all of those numbers in their unique style – confident, aggressive, high limit bookmaking, exactly what the industry needs more of these days.

Of course, my job isn’t to praise Cantor. Like any bettor here in Las Vegas, my job is to beat Cantor! Over the course of the hot, summer months (the first 100 degree day of the year in Vegas comes this week, with many more to follow), I’ll spend a handful of articles discussing those 2013 NFL season win totals as the markets begin to mature. But this week, I’m going to write about Cantor’s ‘every game, every week’ pointspreads for an NFL season that won’t even kick off until September! There certainly aren’t many opportunities in the sportsbetting world to get down significant wagers on regular season games that won’t be played Read more

Indianapolis at Houston
Teddy Covers' Recommendation:
Indianapolis
CRIS Opener: Houston -8 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Houston -9 O/U 48
Teddy's Power Rating: Houston -8

The Texans are a paper tiger, a fraud.  They spent much of the season beating up on the weak, and even those wins haven't come easily of late.  Jacksonville (2-11) scored 37 against the Texans stop unit, making Chad Henne look like a pro bowler with 354 yards and four touchdowns off the bench.  They managed to beat Detroit (4-9) in OT only because Lions head coach Jim Schwartz threw an illegal challenge flag that resulted in an 81-yard touchdown that should never have been.  Against the Titans’ miserable defense, the Texans managed only five first downs in the entire second half.  And we all saw what happened on MNF when Houston traveled to New England – a complete, confidence sapping Read more

NFL Handicapping: Major offensive line concerns for Tennessee Titans

12.07.2012     11:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Indianapolis -5 O/U 48

New offensive coordinator, rookie quarterback on the road in a dome, and now injuries to the offensive line are issues the Tennessee Titans will contend with this weekend at Indianapolis.

The Titans have now placed four of their five offensive line starters from training camp on injured reserve — Hutchinson, Leroy Harris, David Stewart and Eugene Amano.

With Hutchinson out, the Titans are likely to move Fernando Velasco from center to left guard. Kevin Matthews, who filled in for Hutchinson at guard on Sunday, likely will move to center, his position of choice and where he has the most experience.

Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Houston -4.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Houston -6.5 O/U 47

Houston is in their single worst spot of the entire season.  The Texans played an OT barnburner in Detroit last week, escaping with a hard fought three point win.  The previous week, the Texans pulled a ‘refuse-to-lose’ at home against the Jags, rallying from two TD’s behind in the fourth quarter for another OT win.  The week before that, the Texans were in a tough, physical game at Chicago in nasty, cold conditions that also was a one score game throughout.  That’s three consecutive ‘max effort’ games in a row.

Up next for Houston?  An AFC showdown at New England on Monday Night Football, with a chance to put themselves firmly in position for homefield edge throughout the playoffs.  In between those previous games and the Monday Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Tennessee Titans fire offensive coordinator, promote QB coach

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -5.5 at Tennessee O/U 47

Yesterday the Tennessee Titans fired offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and promoted quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains. Jake Locker didn't expect there to be much change to the offense at this point in the season.

“Maybe some little things will change, probably more little details you might not recognize watching a game. It is hard to completely change if you want to do something in the middle of a season. I think there will be some subtle difference, though,” Locker said.

“We just want to take it one week at a time, and study and prepare as best as we can and try and get as good a grip as we can on what coach Loggains wants to accomplish offensively, and then go out and execute to the best of our ability.”

NFL Betting News: Jacksonville's Chad Henne gets start vs. Tennessee

Tennessee -3 at Jacksonville O/U 43.5

Jacksonville announced that Chad Henne will start against Tennessee. Henne filled in for an injured Blaine Gabbert and threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns in last week's 43-37 overtime loss to Houston. A lot of folks have been calling for Henne to step in for weeks. Now that they got their wish, we’ll go ahead and predict something along the lines of this for Henne on Sunday.

NFL Handicapper Free Play: Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee +6.5 at Miami O/U 44
Recommendation: Tennessee

The Dolphins haven’t exactly been beating up on quality foes.  Their four wins this season have come against the Raiders, Bengals, Rams and Jets.  Two of those four wins came by four points or less, not enough to cover this pointspread.  In the two games where Miami has been favored, they’ve won by three and lost by three, failing to cover the number each time.  The Dolphins have been outgained by nearly 550 yards over the last three weeks.  And, long term, simply betting the underdog in every Dolphins game has produced a remarkable 36-13 ATS streak, including a 6-1 ATS run entering Sunday’s game.

If there’s one game all year that we can expect the Titans to show up for, it’s this one.  Tennessee was thoroughly embarrassed and humiliated on their home field last Sunday; a game that was over by the end of the first quarter.  Owner Bud Adams was not amused: Read more

NFL Handicapping: Tennessee Titans say Locker will start vs. Miami

Tennessee at Miami -6 O/U 44

The Tennessee Titans are planning on starting quarterback Jake Locker vs. Miami. He hasn't played in six weeks.

“He needs to be ready to play and play to the best of his ability,” quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains said. “We don’t have time for anybody to be rusty. That excuse isn’t available for anybody, including him. And he knows that. It’s part of the deal. And if you ask Jake, he doesn’t expect to be rusty. He’s worked his butt off to be ready.”

Tennessee at Miami -6 O/U 44

The Miami Dolphins plan to go after the Tennessee Titans via the ground game on Sunday. The Titans have the third worst rush defense in the league (141.6 ypg).

“It’s been inconsistent. At times, it’s very, very productive. At other times, not,” coach Joe Philbin said. “The biggest thing about the run game from [the Colts game], I thought there was some good things. I thought we made some progress. We got the ball to the edge better than we have all year. This type of game it was, (we) didn’t get enough rushing attempts.”

“When you do something well in this league people are going to do whatever they can to take it away from you, and certainly people have schemed up pretty well. Now Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Play: Chicago Bears at Tennessee Titans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago -3.5 at Tennessee O/U 44
Recommendation: Under

The Bears own a sweet 6-1 record which suggests they are a well-rounded football team.  However, this hasn’t been the case as they’ve toiled a large amount of time on the offensive side of the football.  They’ve scored more than their share of points, but counting on the defense to score every week is a tough proposition even for the Bears defense.  Chicago’s offense ranks 26th in the league at 320 ypg, and quarterback Jay Cutler ranks 28th at 5 yards per play.  They haven’t exactly faced a schedule of top-tier defenses either.  The offensive line continues to struggle more often than not and Cutler is playing as a below average NFL signal caller.

The Titans defense owns troubling numbers, but they’ve faced a schedule littered with the league’s best offenses. Offensively, they too rank near the bottom of the NFL (24th, 327 ypg). Not a great matchup Read more
