College Football Gambling: Texas' Strong says it'll take time to build a contender

04.22.2014     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Before you plunk down $100 to win $6,000 (available at 5Dimes) on Texas to win the 2015 BCS National Championship, you may want to read first-year head coach Charlie Strong's take on his team's chances. Success? Probably. Title game berth? Umm, no.

"We have everything available, and I don't know why we can't be successful," Strong told fans in Fort Worth during the first stop on his bus tour, according to the Austin American-Statesman. "There's no reason for us not to be. Now, I can't tell you how soon it's going to be. Don't hold me to that. Don't say, 'Ooh, coach said next year we'll be in the national ...' We will not be in the national championship game."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: An early look at the Field of 68

We’ve got brackets to break down! I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday. Games are listed in rotation order.

The A-10 got a handful of mediocre teams like Dayton into the NCAA Tournament mix, but the Flyers will certainly be looking forward to a matchup against an Ohio State team that has repeatedly avoided them in non-conference play. The Buckeyes enter the tourney on an 0-6 ATS run; just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 tries as chalk.

Syracuse, too, was a pointspread disaster area down the stretch, cashing only one winning bet in their last eight ballgames. But Western Michigan’s only win against an NCAA Tournament team came on the opening night of the season, back on November 8th, when they beat New Mexico State.

Phil Martelli’s Saint Joseph’s team hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2004, when Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were his starting guards. UConn is a Top 10 team for free throw shooting percentage; always key in this ‘short favorite’ pointspread Read more

Quick update: Texas' Jonathan Holmes (knee) has been ruled out for tonight's game against Oklahoma State. Holmes is UT's leading scorer (13.1 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (7.4 rpg).

Oklahoma State at Texas -4 O/U 145.5

Losers of four straight, Oklahoma State heads to Texas sans Marcus Smart who was suspended for three games. According to Sagarin, and with Texas' home court worth 4 points, the game is a pick 'em. Ken Pom has Texas -2. Both power ratings based on teams being at full strength. Keep in mind the Texas may be without Jonathan Holmes (13.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg). He had an MRI on his knee over the weekend and is listed as a game time decision.

“We have opportunities for players to step up,” Ford said. “This is going to give an opportunity for some of them who haven’t been playing quite as much to pick up the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas State Bobcats at UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns

Texas State at UL-Lafayette -8
Recommendation: UL-Lafayette

Huge contrast in style between these teams as fast paced ULL faces turtle-style Texas State. Current KenPom numbers show the Bobcats to rank #333 out of 351 Division 1 schools in adjusted tempo while the Ragin Cajuns are #20. Rapid adjustment is the main concern since ULL is just two days removed from destroying Texas-Arlington 90-70 in a preferred fast tempo game. ULL head coach Bob Marlin is warning his team that tonight is a totally different game and he compared Texas State to former Sun Belt foe Denver. The only opponent ULL has played that’s near the tempo range of Texas State is UL-Monroe and that contests ended in a 103-98 double OT loss. Lafayette got Monroe to go a bit quicker (74-74 at the end of regulation) but had difficulty defending the excellent shooting Warhawks who are hitting 49.4% from the field this season. Texas State does not pose that type of team shooting prowess (only 44% for the season) which could help ULL tonight but it’s also interesting to note that Texas State played at UL-Monroe two days ago and held them to 29% shooting in a 61-36 rout. Texas +12.5 at Oklahoma State
Recommendation: Texas

This isn’t a bet against Oklahoma State as much as it is a bet on Texas.  The Longhorns have made believers out of me, despite their youth, with no seniors and only one junior on Rick Barnes’ squad this year.  But we’ve seen Texas hang tough away from home, gutting out tough road wins at Temple and North Carolina; blowing out DePaul and hanging tough with BYU for the full 40 minutes at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Texas is not a team to lay points with, as we saw in their home loss to Oklahoma on Saturday – they seem to play up or down to their level of competition.  But they covered wire-to-wire in both previous tries as an underdog away from home; a track record that comes into play again tonight.

Texas has extraordinary talent even though they’re young, with five guys averaging in double figures.  They’ve got a defensive mindset, holding foes to 39% shooting for the season.  And the Longhorns are massive in the low post with Cameron Ridley, Jonathan Holmes, Prince Ibeh and Connor Lammert all taking up Read more

Texas vs. Oregon -13.5 O/U 67

Win won for the Mackster is what Texas is saying following the resignation of Texas head coach Mack Brown. Interesting that the players claim the announcement caught them off guard.

"It was definitely shocking," defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat said. "Just the timing of it, we didn't expect it. You always hear things floating around, always hear rumors, but you never really pay attention to it until something happens.

"It really upset us when it happened. He made his decision and he's still coaching for this game, so we've got to get ready for this."

"We love Coach Brown," safety Adrian Phillips said. "We're just going to fight with Coach Brown to the last straw, and that'll be against Oregon. We've got to send him out Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 15 Injury Report

12.06.2013     11:31 AM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri starting strong safety Duron Singleton is ‘questionable’ for Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against Auburn. Singleton missed last Saturday’s win over Texas A&M with a hip injury.

UL-Lafayette will most likely be without its outstanding quarterback Saturday at South Alabama. Junior Terrance Broadway is ‘doubtful’ against the Jaguars due to a wrist injury. Broadway has a 19-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio, in addition to eight rushing TDs. Redshirt freshman Brooks Haack will most likely get his first career start under center for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He had only appeared at garbage time until playing in the second half of last week’s 31-28 home loss to ULM. Haack has completed 16-of-21 throws for 175 yards and one TD without an interception. Also, UL-Lafayette starting safety Darius Barksdale is ‘questionable’ with a hand injury.

SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert (21-7 TD-INT) has been downgraded to ‘doubtful’ for Saturday’s game vs. UCF due to a sore knee. Without Gilbert last week, the Mustangs lost 34-0 at Houston. It was the first time a team coached by June Jones had Read more

College Football Betting: Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Texas still live for Big XII crown

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With no conference title game, the Big XII Championship and a berth in the BCS will come down to this weekend's two season finales between Texas-Baylor and Oklahoma-Oklahoma State. Three of those four teams still have a shot. If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma, the Cowboys are in. If OSU loses, then the winner of Texas-Baylor is in. Note that the OSU-OU game starts at 9 am PT while UT-BU goes off at 12:30 pm PT.

Oklahoma State at Texas
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -1 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 63
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Texas

The betting markets seem convinced that Oklahoma State is capable of beating a quality team on the road in the same fashion that the Cowboys have been beating weaklings. After all, Mike Gundy’s squad has won five straight (4-1 ATS) since their embarrassing loss as 19.5-point favorites at West Virginia back in late September.

But both key wins during that span were right team at the right time kind of victories. They beat Kansas State by only four (not covering -12.5) when Bill Snyder was still working to rebuild his squad from their massive graduation losses; a K-State team that has improved by leaps and bounds over the last month since that defeat. The other “signature” win came against Texas Tech when the Red Raiders were Read more
