College Football Betting Preview: Calofornia Golden Bears at Texas Longhorns

California at Texas
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
California -3 O/U 60
CRIS Current: California -7 O/U 58
Recommendation: Texas

We’re getting a real pointspread bargain here thanks to the nuances of the betting marketplace here in September.   The bettable line for this game from the Westgate Superbook here in Las Vegas, exactly one month ago, was Texas -9.5.  Let me repeat that: Texas -9.5.  Personnel wise, virtually nothing has changed in the last month.  But the perception of these two teams has changed in the markets, and that offers us legitimate value.

Cal was a hot team in the betting markets in Week 1, taking money against FCS Grambling.  They closed as 45-point favorites and covered the spread by two touchdowns.  Last week, the money poured in on the Bears immediately after the line was posted.  Cal opened as low as -7 against San Diego State, but they closed -13 and again, covered the spread by two touchdowns.

What have we seen this week?  The exact same betting pattern!  Cal opened as -3 favorites Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Texas switches play caller after one game

09.09.2015     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly

Knee-jerk or justified? The jury is out as Texas head coach Charlie Strong announced that wide receiver coach Jay Norvell will now call plays following Week 1's 38-3 loss to Notre Dame. Norvell takes over for co-OC Shawn Watson. Yes, the Longhorns' offense performance against the Irish was abysmal but playing on the road against a top-tier defense as you attempt to break in a new offense isn't ideal. We'll see how the Longhorns respond this weekend against Rice. The Owls return four starters on defense after allowing 28.5 ppg last year. Note the Rice's schedule included seven teams that ranked 100th or worse in total offense.

"We have to evaluate every aspect of this program and what's key is getting this program on track," Strong said during a Tuesday evening press conference. "We have to do a better job of coaching.

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Virginia Cavaliers

Notre Dame at Virginia
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -10 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -11.5 O/U 47.5
Recommendation: Virginia

There is not much to dislike about Notre Dame’s impressive 38-3 romp over the Texas Longhorns last week. For starters, they outgained the Longhorns by a stunning 527-163 margin. Quarterback Malik Zaire was terrific completing 19-for-22 passes for 313 yards with 3 TDs and no picks and the ground attack led by C.J. Prosise and Josh Adams combined for 147 yards and 5.88 yards per carry. It was dominance on both sides of the line of scrimmage for Notre Dame who allowed just 60 rushing yards at a paltry 2.1 yards per carry clip and yielded barely over 100 yards passing amazing when you consider UT was playing the entire game from behind. However, as a result, we appear to be laying a tax with the Irish to go along with the early market support.

Virginia didn’t play its best in a 34-16 loss at UCLA but it is never an easy travel/scheduling situation Read more

College Football Handicapping: Back to the drawing board for Texas' offense

09.08.2015     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Not every team can make a seamless transition from traditional to up-tempo offense. Texas managed only 163 yards in Week 1's 38-3 blowout loss at Notre Dame. Keep in mind that the Irish defense, when healthy and not littered with suspensions like what occurred the back half of last season, is a top 20 unit. That said, the performance didn't bode well for the Longhorns after saying they wanting to pick up the pace in 2015. UT's next three opponents present far better opportunities to move the football with Rice (55th in total defense LY), Oklahoma State (93rd), and California (124th) all headed to Austin. Of course one game into the season and head coach Charlie Strong is already questioning his offensive coordinator.

"We have to change. We have to get better on offense," Strong said of his Texas team.

"Things can always get fixed," Strong said, continuing saying that it's just about rolling up your sleeps and getting things done.

Texas at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -8.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -9 O/U 49
Recommendation: Under

The theme of the entire offseason for Texas was the adoption of a new "up-tempo" system. This after the Longhorns averaged 337.3 ypg of total offense in 2014. It's a logical choice considering the current climate of college football and the Big XII in particular but not every move to up-tempo yields instant results like what we witnessed with TCU. Initial reports suggest that the Longhorns aren't really changing the playbook but rather attempting to play at a faster pace. Either way, expect some early season growing pains. And it's not just the offense you worry about. Typically when teams decide more plays and possessions is the route to go, the defense tends to suffer. And defense was the sole reason why Texas was halfway competitive last season.

It was a tale of two seasons for Notre Dame's defense last season. Aided by health, depth, and a favorable slate in terms of opponents' offensive potency, the Irish had the look of a top 10 unit. But Read more

Texas +4.5 at West Virginia O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Texas

Going to step in play Texas at +4.5 (a few +5's available) as it heads to West Virginia this evening. Some bettors will undoubtedly point toward the revenge angle (UT won 77-50 in Austin) and the Longhorns' spotty play of late (back-to-back losses). But at the current price there is some value on the underdog as WVU enters off back-to-back upsets and doesn't match up particularly well against UT's front court. While Texas has plenty of weakness -- most notably a lack of consistency -- they do defend well in the paint. In their last two losses, Oklahoma and Iowa State shot a combined 28-of-77, 36.3% from two. What did them in what allowing 20 three-pointers. But unlike the Sooners and Cyclones, the Mountaineers don't have much of any outside shooting prowess. On the season, they've connected on only 30.9% of their three-point attempts. Another angle to consider is WVU's element of surprise, or lack thereof in this spot. In five "second meets" in Big XII pay, the Mountaineers have covered only once; against bottom feeder Texas Tech. Teams clearly know what to expect and while Texas Read more

College Basketball Betting: Iowa State holds players-only pow-wow

01.26.2015     10:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Following Saturday's clunker at Texas Tech, Iowa State held a players-only meeting to ensure they get things right before playing host to Texas tonight. It was a classic letdown spot following wins over Kansas and Kansas State in Ames and an isolated road trip before returning home to face ranked Texas. The Cyclones mailed it in and paid for it with an embarrassing loss.

"It's about as angry a locker room as I've been in, especially since I've been here," said Jameel McKay after scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds. "It was a very emotional locker room.

"We get amped up against Kansas, but when we play Texas Tech, it's not the same outcome," said Morris, who scored 20 points. "We saw 'Tech' across their jersey and took them for granted. That's all it was. They gave it their best shot."

College Football Handicapping: Arkansas seeks better run game vs. Texas

12.11.2014     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Arkansas is hoping the time off leading up to its Texas Bowl matchup vs. Texas will result in more success running the football. After racking up over 700 yards against Texas Tech and Texas A&M, the Razorbacks averaged only 131 ypg (3.12 ypc) their last six SEC contests. Texas' rushing defense allowed 3.9 ypc on the season.

"We need to get back to the basics of what we do," Cook said. "That's being physical, pounding the rock. That's soothing we can do and something we like to do and something we will focus on and get after it."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bowl season has history of controversy

12.08.2014     08:08 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
There was always going to be controversy.  The system is designed to produce controversy or in 21st century parlance, to generate buzz.  And from the beginning, the college football playoffs were fraught with difficult decisions about which schools deserved to play for the title, and which ones would be on the outside of the process, looking in.

1998 was the beginning of the BCS Bowl era.  The 1998 Fiesta Bowl was the first official national title game; coming on the heels of the split national title between Michigan and Nebraska the previous season.  And while there wasn’t much controversy involving the two teams that played for the title (Tennessee and Florida State), the system itself was under fire from the get-go.  One loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings, but the Wildcats were passed over by all the BCS Bowls, relegated to an Alamo Bowl matchup against Purdue.  To the surprise of no one, the system for choosing the BCS Bowl teams was tweaked the following year.

In 1999, Kansas State finished sixth in the BCS standings, yet they were passed over again.  Michigan got a BCS bowl bid over Michigan Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Kentucky comfortable playing ugly basketball

12.05.2014     10:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The always candid John Calipari talks about the ugly nature of Kentucky's games thus far. They've gone under the total in six of seven games but note that tonight's total vs. Texas is nearly 10 points lower than any total this season.

“You could do the old stuff that they used do at Loyola, you stick one guy down the other end and then they still hold the ball, put two guys down the other end, say, shoot it,” Calipari joked. “But I like this. It makes us grind it out. It makes us have to stay in a stance 30 seconds, it makes us have to put more pressure. You can't let them hold the ball 35 seconds and get an easy shot at the end of a clock. Then what happens, if they're holding it and they take a tough shot, is that you run it right down at them, they start wearing down.

“I just say, hey, if that's how you want to play, that's fine,” Calipari said. “We're trying to be more playmakers off the ball, trying to get them to do that. In other words, deflect the ball from the guy you're
