College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at Michigan Wolverines

Texas at Michigan -11 O/U 130
Recommendation: Michigan

Not an ideal matchup for the Texas Longhorns as they travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan tonight. These two squads hooked up last season in the Bahamas with the Wolverines winning 78-72. UT's starting lineup in the game featured four seniors and junior -- all of which are no longer on the team. This year's edition is littered with underclassmen who will likely struggle against Michigan's methodical brand of basketball. We've already witnessed multiple instances of UT's youth being exposed. Against veteran and fundamentally sound teams Northwestern, Colorado, and UT-Arlington, the Longhorns lost by margins of 19, 14, and 11. Those three squads, who aren't overly athletic, outrebounded Texas by a combined margin of 122-98. Texas fired back last Friday with a 77-68 win over Alabama; a game that was deadlocked heading into the final five minutes before UT pulled away. With such a young squad, one that has struggled on the offensive end (27% 3-pt, 65% FT), forcing turnovers and thus creating high percentage looks would go a long way. In those four games, the turnover battle was nearly dead even. Now Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Baylor Bears at Texas Longhorns

Baylor at Texas
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -2.5 O/U 70
CRIS Current: Baylor -3 O/U 69
Recommendation: Over

After going under the total in two straight games, I look for Texas' beleaguered defense to be exposed yet again when they face Baylor on Saturday. It's been a constant theme this season that capable offenses can move the ball at will against the Longhorns. Over a three-game swatch against California, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma, UT allowed 1,734 yards at a startling 7.3 yards per play.

Perhaps more important to this handicapper is how flawed Baylor's defensive numbers are. The Bears' schedule comes up ultra-light with games against Northwestern State, SMU, Rice, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Kansas. There is one game in particular that stands out as alarming and that's what Iowa State was able to do with the football against the Bears a few weeks back. The Cyclones posted arguably their best offensive showing of the year with 204 yards on the ground and 261 through the air. All told, ISU averaged over 6 yards per play.

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns

Oklahoma vs. Texas - Dallas
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -10.5 O/U 72
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -10 O/U 73
Recommendation: Over

To say that the Longhorns new uptempo offense has paid immediate dividends is something of an understatement.  The Longhorns rank among the Top 10 teams in the country in pace ratings, averaging just shy of 85 plays per game.

Sterlin Gibert’s attack is averaging 38 points per game in regulation through their first four contests, behind the strong arm of Shane Buechele and the D’Onta Foreman/Chris Warren running back duo, combining to average nearly 6.5 yards per carry.  And these aren’t padded numbers against bottom tier FCS schools or Sun Belt squads either – three of the Longhorns first four opponents were Power 5 conference bowl teams last year (Notre Dame, Cal and Oklahoma State).

Oklahoma is no stranger to playing uptempo football, even though their full season pace rating isn’t quite as high as that of Texas.  The Sooners game against uptempo TCU last week produced 98 points, with both teams Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Texas' Strong takes over defense

10.04.2016     09:20 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Well, that didn't work. After saying he was going to have more of a role with the defense heading into last week's game vs. Oklahoma State, Texas head coach Charlie Strong will now call plays. Strong also demoted defensive coordinator Vance Bedford. The Longhorns gave up 49 points and 555 yards on 7.82 yards per play. Note that in games against Notre Dame, Cal, and OSU, Texas' defense failed to force a single takeaway. It will be interesting to see if Strong reverts back to last year's game plan against the Sooners. The Longhorns ran the ball a season-high 58 times (313 yards) which limited Oklahoma to only 65 offensive plays. The end result was a job-saving 24-17 win. If Texas goes the trading scores route, the outcome is inevitable.

College Football Gambling: Texas' offense on the upswing but defense regressing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Live by the tempo, die by the tempo. Texas has finally made good on its word to pick up the pace offensively. The Longhorns are averaging 83.7 plays and 44.6 points per game. The defense however doesn't look built to handle the extra possessions. Notre Dame hung 47 in Week 1 and Cal topped it in its 50-43 win over UT two weeks ago. In three games, the Longhorns have only one takeaway. Following the bye week, head coach Charlie Strong vowed to be more involved in the defensive game plan. Also note that the offensive numbers may be a bit skewed considering the competition. Notre Dame has been so awful defensively it fired its defensive coordinator. UTEP somehow allowed 66 points at home to Army. And Cal has one of the worst power conference top units in the country.

“I need to be involved and we need to have those meetings,” Strong said. “It was just so key and so important that we just sat down [for] just a self evaluation. Look at yourself … check your ego at the door. Some guys, you’re going to get your feelings hurt, but

College Football Handicapping: Texas hoping new OC will spark offensive turnaround

07.20.2016     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After ranking 92nd in total offense (370.8 ypg) last season, Texas brought in 37-year-old offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert. Gilbert worked under current Syracuse head coach Dino Babers and last year served as co-OC under Tulsa's Philip Montgomery. Texas head coach Charlie Strong noted that successfully running the football will be paramount; something that the Longhorns did to varying degrees of success (224.8 ypg) in 2015.

“I’ve always said this, ‘If you’re going to be a good football team, you’re going to have to run the football,’” Strong said. “If you’re going to be a good football team and you’re going to be physical, you have to oppose your will. You have to be two-dimensional.”

“It’s not one of those things where we’re going to throw it all over the ballpark,” Strong said. You may get into a shootout game, but it’s not like

College Basketball Gambling: Oklahoma State remains short on bodies

03.04.2016     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Keep an eye out for the status of Oklahoma State's Jeffrey Carroll (illness) and Leyton Hammonds (finger). Both players missed Monday's game against Iowa State as the Cowboys managed only 50 points due to an ultra-depleted roster. OSU is currently +4.5 against Texas.

“We’re going to have five out there,” Ford said Wednesday. “Now, I don’t know which five at times, but whatever five we have out there, I expect them to play hard.”

“You’d be lying if you didn’t say it was frustrating at times, but you don’t let it get you down,” Ford said. “You don’t let it interfere, you’re trying to prepare with the guys who are playing. That’s kind of my mindset for the coaching staff and all the players.”

Texas at Baylor
Saturday, 9 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Baylor -20 O/U 68.5
CRIS Current: Baylor -20.5 O/U 68.5
Recommendation: Baylor

This BIG XII showdown pins two in-state rivals playing to boost their postseason resumes. Baylor is in all likelihood eliminated from the playoff but still has a shot at a Sugar Bowl invite. The Longhorns are also fighting for a bowl berth. Though they should have been eliminated following their 48-45 loss to Texas Tech, at least two 5-7 teams will be selected for a bowl game according to the NCAA. Given the strength of Texas' brand many fans think they would be in, but NCAA officials state the 5-7 teams selected will be determined by Academic Progress Rate which in Texas’ case (958) probably won’t be high enough to qualify. In any case with Baylor motivated and injuries mounting, it will be a tall task for Charlie Strong’s Longhorns in Waco.

The Longhorns have avoided major injuries for much of the season but that run of good fortune came to a screeching halt on Thanksgiving against Texas Tech. Linebacker Peter Jinkens (torn ACL), right guard Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones

Texas at Iowa State
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FS1
CRIS Opener:
Texas -8 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Texas -6.5 O/U 53
Recommendation: Under

All four of Texas' Big XII games have gone under the total, and three of the four weren't even close as the market has had a tough time adjusting. The Longhorns have run the ball more than any team in league play (51 times per game) and attempted the fewest passes (18.3 times per game). There's no reason to think they'll change that mentality off of back-to-back wins and facing a team in Iowa State the has difficulty stopping the run.

A lot of change for Iowa State heading into this game as offensive coordinator Mark Mangino was let go and sophomore quarterback Joel Lanning will get the start. Lanning took over for senior Sam Richardson in last week's loss to Baylor. His stats look good (12-of-17, 144 yards, 3 TDs) though the Cyclones were trailing 35-0 midway through the second quarter. The change is clearly a last ditch effort to turn things around for head coach Paul Rhoads who is obviously on the hot seat. Given the short turnaround, I'm not expecting it to have Read more
