Big XII Tournament Betting Preview

Big XII Tournament Preview

The Big XII Tournament will get under way Wednesday evening at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO. Arrivals and departures over the past couple of seasons have transformed the conference entirely. Once a solid top two or three power conference I’d say they’ve dropped a few spots with their current roster. Texas and West Virginia’s struggles this season have certainly been a big reason for the drop but losing solid contributors like Texas A&M, Missouri and Colorado while adding TCU really hurts (at least for basketball). Still there is some quality here with Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Oklahoma all ranked in the top 50 in KenPom’s rankings and all five having a legit claim at a berth in the NCAA Tournament. One more team, Baylor, could potentially sneak in to the Big Dance with a deep run to the finals. I don’t see any of the bottom four – Texas, WVU, Texas Tech or TCU – making a championship run so at max I see the Big XII as a five- or six-bid league. Kansas has been a historically dominant force in this tournament having won five of the last seven Read more

College Basketball Betting Update: Texas Longhorns continue their OVER the total run

03.05.2013     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Another game another OVER for Texas as last night's game against Baylor hit 149 points. It got dicey for a while with the score 125 with a little over two minutes remaining. But fouls and free throws the rest of the way helped bettors cash yet another ticket with the opening (137) and closing (139) numbers.

Defensively, it marked the seventh game in a row (all with Myck Kabongo) that Texas allowed over a point per possession (1.10). The Longhorns offset that with one of their better offensive games of the season with 79 points, 1.24 ppp, and 58.3% eFG. It doesn't look like UT's regular season finale vs. Texas Tech will be nationally televised which means the totals market will be made up of just a few shops with small limits. Most bettors will have to wait until the first round of next week's Big XII Tournament to continue riding the Texas Over Train.

College Basketball Handicapping: Texas a completely different team with Kabongo

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
During non-conference play, Texas allowed more than a point per possession just once – it somehow came in the Longhorns' infamous loss to Chaminade. And there went more than a handful of quality opponents during that stretch including Georgetown, UCLA, North Carolina, and Michigan State. Heading into Big XII play, Texas had one of the better defenses in the country. When conference play began, Texas remained above average, holding six of its first 10 league opponents to under a point per possession. But then in mid-February, guard Myck Kabongo became eligible and Texas' identity started to change. For starters, Texas started playing at a slightly faster pace and put the ball in the bucket with more frequency. But while scoring was up with Kabongo on the floor, the defense was way down. In Texas' first 23 games, without Kabongo, they allowed over a point per possession only five times. With Kabongo (6 games) they've allowed the following: 1.06, 1.08, 1.06, 1.25, 1.14, and 1.05. The betting markets have clearly picked up on this little trend. Check out the opening and close numbers for Texas' three lined games with Kabongo in the lineup.

College Basketball Betting: Baylor tries to bounce back after losing heartbreaker to K-State

Baylor -1.5 at Texas O/U 138

We don't spend a lot of time sweating Bubble Talk or Last Four In/Out discussion but it's pretty apparent Baylor recent slide (3-7 SU) has them on the outside looking in when it comes to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Heading into tonight's game against Texas, the Bears sport an RPI ranking of 60th and need to beat Texas and Kansas in order to secure a winning record in Big XII play. Head coach Scott Drew is of course saying all the right things and trying to stay positive, but the way Saturday's game against Kansas State went down (see video below) there has to be some concerns about whether or not this squad can bounce back.

College Basketball Betting: West Virginia considers lineup changes

West Virginia at Texas -4.5 O/U 125.5

No shortage of topics when it comes to West Virginia basketball these days. Beat writers have already worn out the lack of toughness/no leadership angles. Now they’re going the potential lineup change route. The Mountaineers' big men have vastly underachieved and as a result, the team has been killed on the boards. Head coach Bob Huggins, who may or may not punch someone or something before the year is out, is considering going the small-ball route. The only problem is the team is shooting 28.7% from three. The Mountaineers have shot better than 50% eFG twice this season (vs. Marist and Oakland). Tonight they face one of the best defenses in the country in Texas (0.84 points per posession allowed).

Alamo Bowl Betting Preview: Oregon State Beavers vs. Texas Longhorns

Alamo Bowl - San Antonio

Oregon State vs. Texas
CRIS Opener:
Oregon State -1 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Oregon State -3.5 O/U 57.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oregon State -2

Texas has the advantage of playing in San Antonio, but while that should result in a fair amount of fan support, I doubt it will be much of a factor. Let’s face it, the Alamo Bowl is not where the Longhorns or their faithful wanted to finish the season, so playing a couple hundred miles from home isn’t going to give them a huge emotional lift. For me to get involved with Texas, I would need assurances that they were completely into the game – it would also help to know that Oregon State would come in flat. I have seen nothing from either side to indicate that being the case, and as a result, Oregon State is a deserving small favorite. For Texas, a win Read more

College Football Gambling: Texas names Ash starting QB vs. Oregon State

Oregon State -2 vs. Texas O/U 57

Texas has named quarterback David Ash the starter for its Alamo Bowl matchup against Oregon State. Ash did not play in the season finale against Kansas State. During the regular season he completed 67.7% of his passes for 2,458 yards, 17 TDs and 7 INTs.

"The offensive staff talked about it and David did a really good job until he got hurt, so I think that is where we are headed," said Texas coach Mack Brown.

Oregon State -2 vs. Texas O/U 57

With game day still two weeks away, Oregon State is in no rush to name a starting quarterback for its Alamo Bowl matchup against Texas. Cody Vaz and Sean Mannion have split time with the first-string in practice.

Season-to-date statistics
Mannion: 200-310, 64.5% 2,446 yards, 15 TDs, 13 INTs
Vaz: 94-157, 59.9%, 1,286 yards, 11 TDs, 1 INT

"It's going to be like this with these two,'' said Langsdorf, who sounded like he's warming up to the two-quarterback idea. "They're both playing good football. They're both deserving of playing. We're going to let them take even reps.''

"It's good competition for them,'' Langsdorf said. "We're going to let it play out a little bit, give them a lot of work and come up with a plan here after a few days of Read more

Texas can't cover football games because of the Longhorn Network

10.29.2012     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Don't blame Mack Brown and Texas (0-4 ATS run) for barely beating Kansas this past weekend, blame the Longhorn Network.

"We know they (opponents) have it for a fact," Brown said. "Lots of them do. And people are taping it across the country and sending it to the coach if they don't have it in their area. We know that for a fact. We've been told that too many times."

"Art (Briles) and I were talking about it before the game," Brown said. "It's in Waco. Baylor sees every practice. So it's not like it used to be. We're a little overexposed.

"And I do have three shows over there that take you 20 minutes to get there and 20 minutes to get back and an hour to do them. So there's no question it takes away some of your time. And when you do a show, if your mind is somewhere else, you're screwing that up, too.

"So I don't think there's any question it's trial and error. And we'll sit down at the end of the year and look at what's best for them and what's best for us. It's sure new ground. And it is better on the wins Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: Tennessee Volunteers at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Tennessee at Mississippi State
Brent Crow's Recommendation:
Mississippi State
Saturday, 6 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Mississippi State -2.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Mississippi State -3 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Mississippi State -4

Through five games, unbeaten Mississippi State has yet to be challenged but gets its biggest test of the season against Tennessee. The Bulldogs have beaten up on some weak teams this year; Kentucky, Auburn, South Alabama, Troy and Jackson State – none of which hold a candle to Tennessee offensively. MSU has forced 15 turnovers while committing just four, but that should be expected given the competition. They have been good but not great on offense, averaging just over 400 ypg despite playing two Sun Belt squads and FCS Jackson State.

The good news for Mississippi State is that Tennessee if far from a defensive juggernaut. The Vols’ Read more
