College Football Handicapping: Arkansas seeks better run game vs. Texas

12.11.2014     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas is hoping the time off leading up to its Texas Bowl matchup vs. Texas will result in more success running the football. After racking up over 700 yards against Texas Tech and Texas A&M, the Razorbacks averaged only 131 ypg (3.12 ypc) their last six SEC contests. Texas' rushing defense allowed 3.9 ypc on the season.

"We need to get back to the basics of what we do," Cook said. "That's being physical, pounding the rock. That's soothing we can do and something we like to do and something we will focus on and get after it."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bowl season has history of controversy

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There was always going to be controversy.  The system is designed to produce controversy or in 21st century parlance, to generate buzz.  And from the beginning, the college football playoffs were fraught with difficult decisions about which schools deserved to play for the title, and which ones would be on the outside of the process, looking in.

1998 was the beginning of the BCS Bowl era.  The 1998 Fiesta Bowl was the first official national title game; coming on the heels of the split national title between Michigan and Nebraska the previous season.  And while there wasn’t much controversy involving the two teams that played for the title (Tennessee and Florida State), the system itself was under fire from the get-go.  One loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings, but the Wildcats were passed over by all the BCS Bowls, relegated to an Alamo Bowl matchup against Purdue.  To the surprise of no one, the system for choosing the BCS Bowl teams was tweaked the following year.

In 1999, Kansas State finished sixth in the BCS standings, yet they were passed over again.  Michigan got a BCS bowl bid over Michigan Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Kentucky comfortable playing ugly basketball

12.05.2014     10:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The always candid John Calipari talks about the ugly nature of Kentucky's games thus far. They've gone under the total in six of seven games but note that tonight's total vs. Texas is nearly 10 points lower than any total this season.

“You could do the old stuff that they used do at Loyola, you stick one guy down the other end and then they still hold the ball, put two guys down the other end, say, shoot it,” Calipari joked. “But I like this. It makes us grind it out. It makes us have to stay in a stance 30 seconds, it makes us have to put more pressure. You can't let them hold the ball 35 seconds and get an easy shot at the end of a clock. Then what happens, if they're holding it and they take a tough shot, is that you run it right down at them, they start wearing down.

“I just say, hey, if that's how you want to play, that's fine,” Calipari said. “We're trying to be more playmakers off the ball, trying to get them to do that. In other words, deflect the ball from the guy you're Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Florida State Seminoles

Florida at Florida State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -10.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Florida State -7 O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -10.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Florida

Turn the page back to lateThanksgiving 2010, and Will Muschamp was at or near the top of almost everyone's list of young college coaches on the rise and perhaps destined for head coaching greatness.

Muschamp, then the University of Texas' defensive coordinator and that school's so-called "coach in waiting," had earned the reputation of being a talented recruiter and hard-nosed coordinator who had demanded the best out of his defenses at high profile places such as LSU, Auburn and Texas.

After being named the Longhorns' coach-in-waiting in 2008, Muschamp was expected to succeed Mack Brown upon the coaching legend's still to be determined Read more

College Football Handicapping: Iowa State not married to new found up-tempo offense

10.16.2014     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Through its first five games, Iowa State averaged a very pedestrian 67 plays per game. Last week against Toledo, they incorperated some up-tempo, ran 87 plays, and scored 37 points in the win. But heading into Sunday's game on the road against Texas, it appears that the Cyclones are going to revert back to a more controlled style of offense.

“It can be a real detriment to your defense if you are not (successful) and coming off the field quite quickly,” Rhoads said.

College Football Betting Preview: Texas Longhorns vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Texas vs. Oklahoma
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC (Dallas)
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma -14.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: OKlahoma -14 O/U 47
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma -18
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Under

The second Saturday in October means a number of things at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Big Tex will be slow talking fair-goers; fair-goers will be consuming tons of Fletcher's Corn Dogs and any other fried food imaginable; and the college football hatefest known as Texas-Oklahoma will take center stage in the middle of it all at the Cotton Bowl.

While this game often pits a pair of highly-ranked teams, 11th-ranked Oklahoma (4-1) saw its national playoff aspirations take a serious hit last Saturday in Fort Worth as TCU stunned the Sooners, 37-33. Texas (2-3), meanwhile, is unranked and experiencing significant growing pains on and off the field under first-year head coach Charlie Strong. The Read more

College Football Betting: Texas well aware of big underdog status vs. Baylor

09.30.2014     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly

Baylor -16.5 at Texas

Texas head coach Charlie Strong needs to refresh his odds screen. You were 14-point dogs for all of a few hours, Chuck.

On being the underdog: “Well, I don’t have a choice. I’m a 14 point underdog, 14 point spread right now. We’re going to have to play really well. We’re going to have to play really well to be in the ballgame.”

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins vs. Texas Longhorns

UCLA vs. Texas (Arlington)
Saturday, 5 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
UCLA -7 O/U 54
CRIS Current: UCLA -7 O/U 50
Rob Veno's Recommendation: UCLA -2.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: UCLA

We will try to provide a third straight college football free play winner this week with the UCLA Bruins laying a touchdown as they face the Texas Longhorns in Arlington. I’m not eager to support either one of these teams at the moment but the Bruins despite their shaky first two performances in closer than expected wins at Virginia and at home against Memphis are still the more talented and certainly the healthier team entering this non-conference clash.

Texas is dealing with plenty of injury concerns particularly on offense and those personnel issues showed in last week’s 41-7 drubbing at the hands of BYU. The Longhorns have already lost QB David Ash and without him, dating back to last season, the Read more

College Football Gambling: Texas' offensive line takes big hit

09.03.2014     11:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not only will the Texas Longhorns be without quarterback David Ash (concussion) but the anchor of the offensive line, Dominic Espinosa (ankle), is also out indefinitely. Espinosa's injury now makes Texas on of the youngest and least experiences offensive lines in the country. Good article from burntorangenation.com on what to expect with UT's o-line moving forward. Still no widely available line on Saturday's game vs. BYU.

When Phil Steele released his annual list of the most experienced offensive lines around the nation this summer, the Horns were tied for No. 87 in the country with only 49 starts, most of them belonging to Espinosa.

Combined, the group would now rank No. 127 in the country in experience, in front of only Tennessee, which boasted six starts heading into the season.
