MLB Gambling Free Play: Texas Rangers at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Grimm) -110 at Milwaukee (Peralta) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Despite the fact that 14 of 19 games have gone over the total at Miller Marker this season, only once has a game closed with a total of 9. Oddsmakers and the betting markets just haven't caught on that everything about these games screams offense. For starters, Milwaukee doesn't have any elite level starting pitchers. Yovani Gallardo has a decent pedigree but has struggled. Kyle Lohse is the only pitcher has performed up to his capabilities but he's obviously not involved this evening. And Marco Estrada and tonight's starter Wily Peralta have proved to be quite hittable with ERA's currently hovering around 6. Then of course there is Milwaukee's bullpen which statistically hasn't been as bad as it seems but still sports a group ERA north of 4.00. Finally, Milwaukee’s offense has been solid, especially at home where they average over five runs per game with .280/.811 splits. Tonight, Peralta is on the hill, and Read more

MLB Handicapping: Wind and rain in forecast for Rangers-Cubs

04.18.2013     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
Texas (Ogando) -145at Chicago Cubs (Villanueva) O/U 10.5

Wind expected to be blowing out to left field at nearly 20 mph this afternoon at Wrigley Field. Oddsmakers opened the game's total at 12.5 but it was quickly bet down to 10.5. Totals of 10.5 or more at Wrigley are on a 42-46-1 O/U run. Note that the game may be delayed or even canceled due to the likelihood of rain. If the rain passes and they resume the game, the wind could shift directions.

MLB Gambling: Texas rookie Tepesch makes debut vs. Tampa Bay

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Hernandez) at Texas (Tepesch) -130 O/U 10.5

Texas' Nick Tepesch will make his MLB debut tonight against Tampa Bay. Last season Tepesch pitched at High-A and Double-A. This season he made one start for Triple-A Round Rock (5 IP, 0 ER, 5 Ks, 0 BB). Here is good scouting report on the kid. Numbers-wise it looks like he has good command (77 walks in 305 innings) but his strikeout rate is a bit low (68 Ks in 90.1 IP at Double-A).

MLB Handicapping: Angels' Hanson makes American League debut

LA Angels (Hanson) at Texas (Harrison) -125 O/U 9.5

Keep an eye on Los Angeles' Tommy Hanson as he makes his American League debut this afternoon in Texas. Hanson struggled with back problems and a drop in velocity last year. And during the spring he was pulled from a start due to the tight tricep. In his last spring training outing he went 6.1 innings, struck out six and walked four (93 pitches).

MLB Handicapping: Baltimore faces Texas' Darvish for the first time

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Saunders) at Texas (Darvish) -190 O/U 9

We mentioned earlier this season that teams had difficulty generating much offense against Texas' Yu Darvish when facing him for the first time. In that situation, Darvish went 10-3 with a 3.12 ERA. Baltimore has obviously never faced him. Darvish also comes in pitching his best baseball of the season. Over his last six starts, he's posted a 1.85 ERA with 97 swinging strikes. As for Baltimore's Joe Saunders, expect the Rangers to load up with right-handed batters. Saunders' posted a .199 BAA and .221 SLG vs. lefties and .307 BAA and .461 SLLG vs. righties this season.

Tampa Bay (Price) -110 at Texas (Holland) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

I know that Tampa’s David Price has been nothing short of brilliant since the All-Star break, sporting a 5-0 record and a 1.23 ERA in his last eight starts.  But his track record against the Rangers leaves much to be desired, with just a single victory to go along with his 5.52 ERA in seven regular season starts against them.  His track record at the Ballpark in Arlington is even worse, with a 9.24 ERA; lasting only 12.2 innings in three previous starts on this field.  And those numbers don’t even include his 0-3 mark against Texas in the 2010 and 2011 playoffs!

Texas starter Derek Holland has a pretty miserable track record of his own against this Rays lineup.  Tampa scored five runs against him in his lone start against them this year.  The Rays pounded him for nine runs in 12.1 innings of work in two regular season starts against them last year.  It was a similar Read more

MLB Handicapping: Beckett ready to go, Red Sox cope with media circus

08.08.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No shortage of storylines in Boston these days. Where shall we start? How about Josh Beckett who was forced to skip his last start due to back stiffness. In the midst of explaining to the media that he's ready to pitch tonight, Beckett tried to shrug off questions about the team's alleged dysfunction.

“We traveled late in from New York (two nights before) and I didn't sleep particularly well, had a lot of anxiety and stress things going on, exterior distractions,” Beckett told WAAF. “I don’t think that a lot of it was great for my back. And going out and pitching on that mound, it was very wet, and my back just locked up on me."

On the notion that the Sox are like a dysfunctional family, Beckett insisted “it’s the exact opposite,” suggesting it is the media that creates that perception.

Then there are the struggles of Jon Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals

Texas (Harrison) -175 at Kansas City (Guthrie) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

The Rangers went Over the total by themselves on Wednesday in their wild 11-10 thriller over the Angels.  They did it again last night, pounding out 15 runs against LA.  Big boppers Josh Hamilton, Elvis Andrus and Michael Young have all hit their way out of slumps during this span, putting the highest scoring team in the majors right back on track offensively after their post- All Star break doldrums.

That’s bad news for KC starter Jeremy Guthrie, who has been nothing short of awful this year.  Guthrie is 0-8 with a 7.76 ERA in his last 13 starts, including 0-2, 9.58 ERA since being traded to KC.  With 24 home runs allowed in just 101 innings of work, a hot night in Missouri (heat index of 102) isn’t likely to help him cool off the hottest lineup in the majors.

But KC is hitting these days, pounding out 26 runs in their last four ballgames; at least five in Read more

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota uses 11th different starting pitcher

07.07.2012     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Deduno) at Texas (Holland) -180 O/U 10.5

Minnesota will use its 11th different starting pitcher after calling up right-hander Sam Deduno from Triple-A Rochester. Deduno is 29 years old and has his Minor League progress delayed by Tommy John. He's shown the ability to miss bats with 46 strikeouts in 42 innings this season. Add in only 27 hits allowed and on paper it looks like Deduno has decent stuff though some concern with a 4.50 BB/9 ratio.

MLB Gambling News: Texas' Harrison continue to produce ace-like numbers

07.05.2012     05:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Harrison) -130 at Chicago WS (Quintana) O/U 10

If you were going to name a mid-season pitching MVP for the Rangers, Matt Harrison would be at the top of the list. With all of the injuries to the rest of the staff, Harrison has done nothing but take the ball 16 times and put up these rock solid numbers: 11-3, 3.16 ERA, 1.24 WHIP. And he's hardly doing it with smoke and mirrors. As FanGraphs points out, prior to David Price's start against the Yankees yesterday, check out his numbers matched up against Harrison's over the last two years:

Harrison: 291 IP, 3.31 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 3.86 xFIP, 6.8 WAR
Price: 329 IP, 3.31 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 3.31 xFIP, 6.7 WAR
