Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look back and NFL Week 6

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 6 of the NFL is in the rear view mirror as the 2015 regular season approaches the halfway point.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll look to answer three questions that stood out to me following Sunday’s action.

How good are the Jets?
In the midst of a season where there don’t appear to be a whole host of elite Super Bowl contenders, the Jets 4-1 start has bettors and pundits taking notice.  The Patriots, Bengals and Packers are the clear Top 3 teams in any reasonable set of NFL power ratings.  There’s a legitimate argument to be made that the Jets could be #4 on that list, ahead of or equal to other hot start teams like the Cardinals, Falcons or Panthers.

The Jets won only four games last year; their fourth consecutive non-winning season.  With Todd Bowles as the new head coach, New York was lined as a 7.5 win team here in 2015 in the offseason betting markets.  The training camp injury to Geno Smith left Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback; a switch that the betting markets didn’t react to very much.  But Fitzpatrick has been a difference maker for New Read more

College Football Handicapping: Arizona State's offense ready to peak in third year under Graham

08.26.2014     07:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article about Arizona State's pace of play. Last year the Sun Devils ran an offensive play every 23 seconds which ranked 25th nationally. Head coach Todd Graham said he would like to see one run every 15 seconds which would be about five seconds faster than Oregon and Texas Tech. The isn't going to happen but with this being Graham's third year, there is reason to believe the offense's pace, conditioning, and continuity will be improved.

"Tempo is the key, but you can't hurry up and mess up, either. I want to go as fast as we can (offensively) as long as we're making first downs.

"If you're going three and out, three and out, three and out, I'd like to slow down a little bit. That's just hurrying up to get beat.

"If I go into a game and I feel like we're a lot better than the other team defensively, I'll tell Mike (Norvell), 'Go as fast as you can.' " Graham said. "Mike will tell you, last year against (USC), I was telling him, 'Hey, stop scoring so fast! Slow down!'

College Football Handicapping: Cold temps expected for Arizona State-Washington State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona State -12 at Washington State O/U 71

A couple of key points/stats regarding tonight's Arizona State-Washington State matchup courtesy of the Yakima Herald. For starters, it is expected to cool off considerably by this evening – game time temps in the high 30's and damp following rain throughout the day. Second, ASU doesn't have a strong track record in the Pacific Northwest – no road wins since 2010 and a 2-10 record outside of Arizona in November and December during that span.

“We never worry about that,” ASU coach Todd Graham said. “It’s part of the game. Obviously you’ve got to be prepared for anything but it doesn’t affect us. We’re a run, play-action pass football team and it hasn’t affected us. We’re not worried about it a

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: AFC News and Notes from Week 6

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC thoughts and opinions from Week 6.

Denver Broncos - This offense does NOT take downfield shots; arguably the best 'dink and dunk' attack I've ever seen. The passing game is just lots and lots of well executed short passes thrown by a remarkably accurate quarterback. Even on a day where the Broncos were clearly a little bit flat in a legitimate sandwich spot against the worst team in the league, the Broncos still had five offensive touchdowns compared to only three punts and zero field goal attempts.

But this secondary is officially a problem area, even with Champ Bailey active today. We all saw what Tony Romo did to them last week. Here, Chad Henne was converting on 3rd and 25’s and Justin Blackmon was catching 14 balls for 190 yards. Rahim Moore was dropping sure interceptions, they were getting gashed on the ground, and the pass rush wasn't there. To make matters worse, Denver has a cluster injury Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Arizona State vs. Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC (Arlington, Texas)
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -6.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Arizona State -6.5 O/U 62.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -2
Brian Edwards' Recommendation: Arizona State

Notre Dame and Arizona State will collide Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Most betting shops have tabbed the Sun Devils as 6-point favorites with a total of 62 for over/under wagers.

Gamblers can back the Fighting Irish on the money line for a +200 return (risk $100 to win $200). For first-half wagers, ASU is favored by three with a total of 31.

Arizona State (3-1 straight up, 2-2 against the spread) bounced back from a 42-28 loss at Stanford to blast USC by a 62-41 count as a 3.5-point home chalk. The 103 combined points soared over the 48.5-point total. Taylor Kelly threw for 351 yards and three TDs against the Read more

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -5 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Arizona State -5 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Arizona State -5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Arizona State

This PAC-12 showdown should come down to which team imposes their will and style on the other team. USC will rely on defense and slowing the pace of this game down greatly while Arizona State will look to make this a shootout and use its fast paced, up-tempo offense to wear down the very stout Trojans defense over the course of 60 minutes. I think in this case, Arizona State and their offense will win out and home field advantage will prove to be too much for USC as the Trojans play their first PAC-12 road game of the season.

The reason why I’m more willing to lay the points with ASU at home is because I simply don’t trust USC’s offense to score enough points Read more

Arizona State at Stanford
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -6.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Stanford -5.5 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -11
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over 1st Half

It was good for the Sun Devils to play Wisconsin last week since the Badgers are a near mirror image of Stanford offensively. ASU’s defense had to deal with the power style rushing attack of Wisconsin and the subsequent play-action passing that goes with it. The problem is, Arizona State didn’t fare all that well at stopping the Badgers who rolled to 441 total yards on 7.0 per play which included 232 rushing yards and 7.2 per carry. That’s a major problem as Todd Graham’s team leaves the cozy confines of Sun Devil Stadium for the first time this season to play at Stanford in their PAC-12 opener.

Another fundamental problem will likely be the Stanford defense which Read more

College Football Betting: Mountain West Conference preview

Mountain West Conference Preview

Quarterback Driven League: The starting quarterback play in this conference is as deep and as talented as it has ever been. Returnees Derek Carr (Fresno State), David Fales (San Jose State), Cody Fajardo (Nevada), Chuckie Keeton (Utah State), Brett Smith (Wyoming), Nick Sherry (U.N.L.V.) Joe Southwick (Boise State) and Conner Smith all figure to either equal or increase their team’s offensive production of last season.

New Head Coaches: Nevada, San Jose State and Utah State will all have new head coaches this season. Utah State promoted from within as last season’s OC Matt Wells takes over and their transition should be seamless. The schemes remain in pace on each side of the ball and play during the spring practice session drew solid reviews from HC Wells. While the base systems will remain the same, the coordinators are new. OC Kevin McGiven was the OC at Montana State LY while DC Todd Orlando held the same position at Florida international LY.

At Nevada, Brian Polian takes over for Wolfpack legendary HC Chris Ault. Read more

CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -15.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Arizona State -13.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Arizona State -14.5

There are a multitude of contrasts and advantages to be considered in this game but motivation is not one of them. Each squad has openly expressed their excitement to be in the postseason so we figure to get maximum effort. Preparation time is essential when facing Navy’s triple option attack and even with the extra time, ASU is not finding things easy. First year head coach Todd Graham cites the Navy blocking scheme as difficult to defend and obviously simulating it in practice is nothing like what the Sun Devils will see Saturday afternoon. There are problems for Navy too in prepping for Arizona State’s high powered and Read more
