Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl – San Francisco
Saturday, December 29, 1 pm PT – ESPN
Navy vs. Arizona State
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -15.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Arizona State -13.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Arizona State -14.5

There are a multitude of contrasts and advantages to be considered in this game but motivation is not one of them. Each squad has openly expressed their excitement to be in the postseason so we figure to get maximum effort. Preparation time is essential when facing Navy’s triple option attack and even with the extra time, ASU is not finding things easy. First year head coach Todd Graham cites the Navy blocking scheme as difficult to defend and obviously simulating it in practice is nothing like what the Sun Devils will see Saturday afternoon. There are problems for Navy too in prepping for Arizona State’s high powered and Read more

College Football Betting: Illinois' defense had no clue what is was doing vs. Arizona State

09.13.2012     06:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ron Zook may no longer physicallly be the head coach of the University of Illinois, but it appears that his spirit is alive and well. "Widespread confusion" is being used to describe the Illini's defensive performance in last week's 45-14 loss at Arizona State. Part of the credit should probably go to ASU and first-year head coach Todd Graham who had his offense pushing the tempo for much of the game. Note that under defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, who now holds the same position at North Carolina, Illinois held nine opponents to 21 points or less and didn't allow more than 35 points in a single game last year.

“We didn’t communicate well where everyone got the right calls. Some guys were running different things from guys opposite them and when we’re not all on the same page, it looks bad. There were a lot of communications breakdowns between guys on defense and our coaches.”

“On that first drive, I thought they were going pretty fast,” Spence Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Towson at Kent State -7 - Lot of respect for Towson who unexpectedly took the CAA by storm last year. Kent State has a strong defense and feels it’s a bit better offensively this season but still, don't see a real talent gap here. Towson's balanced and explosive offense with eight of its pieces back plus more experienced defense makes them a threat. Power Ratings made this a pick-em. Recommendation: Took a small piece of Towson +7

Southeast Missouri State at Central Michigan -26 - No real interest here but do think that CMU will rise up and become competitive again in MAC this year behind QB Radcliff and receiving weapons (bumped them +2.5 in my PR this year). SEMO is not OVC trash and they have Ohio U. sophomore transfer Kyle Snyder at QB so his knowledge of Chippewas will help in game prep. They are run heavy and decent at it so if they have success, clock grinding makes +26 look large. Think their defense may get toasted through the air early and often though. Recommendation: None

Northern Colorado at Utah -42 - Northern really optimistic about this season based on more Read more

College Football Gambling: Pitt Panthers seek better offensive line play

08.22.2012     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nowhere to go but up for the Pitt Panther's offensive line in 2012. Last year was nothing short of a disaster under Todd Graham as Pitt allowed an NCAA-worst 63 sacks – 16 more than the second worst team, Miami (OH). First-year head coach Paul Chryst (Wisconsin OC) is switching the team back to a pro-style offense predicated on running the football. Running back Ray Graham, who missed the final five game of last season with an ACL tear, is optimistic about starting the team's Week 1 contest.

"Up front, as the offensive line, we've improved every day, and we're going to be as good as our front five are," Jacobson said.

"I'm not going to lie to anybody. We're like a lot of teams around the country. When we decide on five guys, that's the five guys we want to play," Hueber said. "You don't want to have to play anybody else. And I know you're hoping against hope that that'll happen over 12 games, but that's where we want to be."

NCAAF Betting News: Arizona State's Graham leans towards unheralded quarterback

08.14.2012     11:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another starting quarterback announcement and according to the media, it's a surprise. Arizona State had a three-man race between Michael Eubank, Michael Bercovici and Taylor Kelly. A lot of folks like to compare Eubank to that of Cam Newton in terms of his size and strength. He also was recruited by Todd Graham during his time a Pitt. Bercovici served as Brock Osweiler's back-up last year and so did Kelly who of the lot was considered the least likely to earn the starting job. You probably know where this is going. Though Week 1's starter hasn't been officially named, Graham says Kelly is currently atop the depth chart. Obviously this could be a way of motivating the other two – especially Eubank who is likely to be the starter at some point. But Kelly is noted for his running ability and Graham likes using quarterbacks in the run game – Tulsa's G.J. Kinne rushed for 561 yards in 2010, and when he wasn't getting sacked eight times per game, Pitt's Tino Sunseri was let loose as well (154 rushing attempts).

College Football Gambling: Arizona State Sun Devils Season Over/Under Wins

Arizona State Sun Devils
Recommendation: Under 5 wins (-135 @5Dimes)

The Dennis Erickson era ended with a thud last season as Arizona State’s lofty preseason expectations eroded into a 6-7 record which culminated with an embarrassing 56-24 loss to Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl. Ex-Tulsa and Pittsburgh head coach Todd Graham takes over the program which is heading into this fall camp much differently than last season. Unlike last August, when droves of college football followers were jumping on the ASU bandwagon and proclaiming them top 25 material, this summer is filled with skeptics and zero talk of a PAC-12 South title.

There are numerous reasons for the mass exodus of national support for this team but there are four in particular that have me feeling the Sun Devils will likely win even less games than last season.

Offensively it seems as if Arizona State is trying to jam the old square peg into a round hole by currently listing sophomore Mike Bercovici as their no. 1 quarterback heading into this campaign. Bercovici is a pure pocket passer in Graham’s run oriented spread option which obviously Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Five first-year head coaches in C-USA

08.01.2012     03:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Whatever you remember about C-USA from last year, we strongly suggest you erase it from your memory. There are five first-year head coaches and nearly half the league returns 11 or fewer starters. Here's a quick breakdown of each team.

UCF - Banned the postseason, including the conference championship. Off a disappointing 5-7 year and with 16 starters back, big things were expected.

Southern Miss - Fedora left for North Carolina and they brought in Ellis Johnson (South Carolina DC). Offensive coordinator is fresh from the high school ranks. Five QBs fighting for starting gig. Lost a lot of talent from last year's 12-2 squad.

East Carolina - One of the more stable situations with McNeill in his third year. Discipline and fundamentals still lacking from the Holtz years. -21 in turnover margin in two years under McNeill, +9 average Holtz' last four years.

Marshall - Holliday in his third season. Good coach but mediocre talent. Could benefit from Read more

College Football Betting: Arizona State starting from scratch

07.25.2012     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of change this offseason for the Arizona State Sun Devils. After just one season, Todd Graham decided Pittsburgh wasn't for him. He takes over for Dennis Erickson who was fired at the end of the regular season. ASU is projected to have only eight returning starters (4 off, 4 def). Heading into fall camp, Graham seems eager to find a starting quarterback to run his new system. The Sun Devils are lined at 5un-135 wins according to 5Dimes.

"Here's the issue," Graham said. "We're running a new system. We got certain routes we're going to throw to certain guys. A lot of times, you can't (give reps to) more than one quarterback (in that situation), let alone three."

"And the other thing, too, is who can lead the troops down the field?" Graham said. "Those guys are good, all three of them. I'm not BS'ing. It doesn't do us any good to say it's a three-man race if it's not. They've trained their tails off over the summer. We're going to see what happens."

SMU vs. Pittsburgh
Saturday, 10 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Pittsburgh -5.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 47
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Pittsburgh -6

Marty Otto's Betting Take: We can talk about the mess Todd Graham created this season by trying to force his offense on players that didn’t look comfortable in the system. We can talk about the mess Graham left behind when he let his team know via text message that he was leaving for Arizona State. We can also talk about the fact that SMU’s coach June Jones was on the verge of being hired by Arizona State just days prior to Graham and that he lied to his team about it. We can talk about a whole host of off-field issues that surround this game and each of them is ugly.

But we want to get to the game at hand; who’s motivated and who’s talented enough Read more
