College Basketball Gambling Free Play: Pepperdine Waves at Tulane Green Wave

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pepperdine +8 at Tulane
Recommendation: Pepperdine

Despite knowing that this is the championship game of Tulane’s own holiday tournament and that the Green Wave is off to an 8-3 start this season, I have a hard time finding the eight points worth of separation given to them in this contest. Tulane’s non-conference schedule ranks 345th according to Ken Pom. Their slate is littered with teams that own RPI’s of 200 or worse – Georgia Tech and Nebraska are their only opponents possessing an RPI better than 214. Pepperdine’s schedule has not been much better, but it is better. The Waves have faced a pair of PAC-12 opponents (Cal and Washington State) along with early season surprise Cal State-Northridge and a much improved Central Michigan team (5-4 SU, 5-3 ATS vs. a tough schedule).

Fundamentally these teams are very similar statistically on defense but Pepperdine holds more than just a slight edge in almost every offensive Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Oddsmakers screw up Tulane-Pepperdine line

12.20.2012     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
Pepperdine at Tulane -7.5

Check out the odd line move situation that has taken place for tonight's Pepperdine-Tulane game. Both teams played last night as a part of the Tulane Classic. BetOnline, which is typically the first to post lines during the afternoon opened with Tulane as an 8-point favorite – which on initial glance appeared to be in the ballpark. But CRIS opened the game a pick 'em and proceeded to be peppered with a flood of Tulane money. The line jumped to -3.5 where it stood until this morning. BetOnline, which copies CRIS's lines, went from Tulane -6 to -1.5 where again it stood until this morning. CRIS meanwhile spotted what was seemingly was an error and reposted the game Tulane -7.5 about an hour ago. We'd be curious to know if CRIS canceled those overnight bets due to the miscue. Line histories courtesy of CRIS and BetOnline.

College Football Gambling: UL-Lafayette comfortable with Broadway at quarterback

Tulane at Louisiana-Lafayette -23.5 O/U 56.5

UL-Lafayette will start quarterback Terrance Broadway this weekend against Tulane. Last week Broadway spelled starter Blaine Gautier who broke his wrist. Head coach Mark Hudspeth said Gautier won't play quarterback again this season though he may see playing time in the secondary once he heals. Broadway finished the game 15-of-19 for 228 yards as the Ragin Cajuns rolled up Florida International 48-20.

“There’s no looking past this game, I can assure you that,” Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth said Monday. “We had a 45-minute meeting last night, and we talked about the importance of this game. I went through and read to them all the scores (in the series) going back to 1911, and there were some pretty lopsided scores, and we’ve taken our lumps on most of Read more

College Football Betting: Tulane getting desperate at quarterback position

Louisiana-Monroe -18 at Tulane O/U 56

Thing have gotten so bad for Tulane that they are bringing players back who left the team in favor of a different sport. Quarterbacks Ryan Griffin and Devin Powell are banged up and may not be available to play Saturday. That leaves DJ Ponder who returned to the team in mid-August after a stint playing professional baseball.  Ponder has experience having saw action during both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The only problem is he's not very good: 26-for-62, 216 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs. Head coach Curtis Johnson will determine who will start on Thursday.

“Yeah, I’m just excited to see him play. I want to see him play,” Tulane Coach Curtis Johnson said. “He looked good today, he had a great practice.”

“D.J.’s been here five years,” Griffin Read more

College Football Betting: SEC News and Notes Week 4

No real surprises in the SEC this weekend except of course for the ongoing circus currently taking place in Fayetteville. Arkansas got quarterback Tyler Wilson back in the lineup for its non-conference home tilt against Rutgers, but still took it on the chin, 35-26. Wilson threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice. Arkansas’ defense was torched again, giving up 35 points and 525 yards of total offense to what had been a mediocre Rutgers offense. They have now allowed over 1,800 yards in four games and they face another test this week at Texas A&M.

The closest thing to an upset was Auburn’s near miss at home against LSU. The Tigers fought valiantly, but couldn’t muster enough offense to pull off the upset. Auburn held LSU to 12 points, but their offense had just 183 total yards and committed three turnovers. LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger didn’t set the world on fire, but finished a solid 15-of-27 for 169 yards and no interceptions in his first SEC road start.

The newest SEC member, Missouri, found out how tough life on the road in the SEC can be at South Carolina. The Gamecocks Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Five first-year head coaches in C-USA

08.01.2012     03:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Whatever you remember about C-USA from last year, we strongly suggest you erase it from your memory. There are five first-year head coaches and nearly half the league returns 11 or fewer starters. Here's a quick breakdown of each team.

UCF - Banned the postseason, including the conference championship. Off a disappointing 5-7 year and with 16 starters back, big things were expected.

Southern Miss - Fedora left for North Carolina and they brought in Ellis Johnson (South Carolina DC). Offensive coordinator is fresh from the high school ranks. Five QBs fighting for starting gig. Lost a lot of talent from last year's 12-2 squad.

East Carolina - One of the more stable situations with McNeill in his third year. Discipline and fundamentals still lacking from the Holtz years. -21 in turnover margin in two years under McNeill, +9 average Holtz' last four years.

Marshall - Holliday in his third season. Good coach but mediocre talent. Could benefit from Read more

Mississippi State at Mississippi OVER 130.5
Looks as if we’ll see contrasting philosophies in this game where the overall tempo is concerned. MSU head coach Rick Stansbury would prefer to get his electric PG Dee Bost and athletic running post man Arnett Moultrie out on the break as much as possible to avoid down low infighting with Ole Miss brawlers Murphy Holloway and Reginald Buckner. Meanwhile, Andy Kennedy would like is Rebels to feature more offensive ball movement and good shot selection. Mississippi is not without its desire to push pace when the opportunity exists and they’ll certainly look for quick outlet and easy bucket transition opportunities. Free throws could be in abundance here because of the intense post play and the potential for aggressive late game fouling. Mississippi State’s 78.3% from the line in conference play (4 regulars 72% or better) is strong enough to negate Mississippi’s weak 64.2% SEC Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Memphis yet to live up to preseason expectations

Tennessee at Memphis -8.5 O/U 146.5

Good article on the Perception vs. Reality of the Memphis Tigers. They play host to Tennessee tonight after beating the Vols 99-97 in double overtime at the Maui Classic. Both squads open conference play on Saturday.

Through 13 games, the Tigers rank 11th among the 12 C-USA teams in scoring defense, allowing 70.9 points per game (they’re second in offense with 77.8 points scored). Remarkably, Memphis is second in the league (behind Tulane) in field-goal percentage defense, its opponents shooting just 38.2 percent. Trouble is, the Tigers are giving up a lot of shots (812, or 98 more than the Green Wave, a team that has played one more game than Memphis). The Tigers are dead last in C-USA in opponents’ rebounds (37.4).

Tulane at Wofford +3 O/U 122.5
Recommendation: Wofford

It is early and there aren't a lot of situational plays, but here is one's that I think we can take advantage of. Tulane is a program on the rise and seemed to have taken the first step in becoming respectable – winning at home against a marquee opponent. Georgia Tech may not seem marquee, but compared to the rest of Tulane's non-conference schedule, it bordered on monumetal. Remember, the Green Wave played one of the easiest non-conference schedules in the country last year (started 12-3) but finished 1-14 when the competition stiffened. This year, a similar concept with some truly horrific opponents (five of which 328th or worse according to Ken Pom). So because Tulane played an easy schedule BUT proved itself with a home win over Georgia Tech, they are now laying points (and getting bet) for a short turnaround road game against a comparable foe. Keep in mind that in their lone road test earlier this Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Houston-Tulane total gets smashed OVER

11.10.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -7 at Tulane O/U 77

Geesh. What do you do with this one? Tonight's bet-the-over-because-it's-Conference-USA just got a little more tricky with the total steamed up from an opener of 73.5 (Pinnacle opened 71) to its current number of 77. Though even with the move, how much of an effort do you need from Tulane with Houston reeling off scores of 56, 73, 63, 56 and 49 in conference play? Maybe the Cougars figured out some mathematical algorithm that shows if they beat the remainder of their opponents by an average of 53 ppg, they’ll slip into the BCS title game.

And talk about a pointspread adjustment. In Week 2, Houston was a 20.5-point road favorite at North Texas (won 48-23). Tulane is really bad, but not too far removed from that of the Mean Green. Line history below from CRIS.
