College Basketball Handicapping: Injury Report 1-24-2014

Can you really blame Michigan State junior Branden Dawson? When I'm forced to listen to ESPN analyst Dan Dakich talk (about anything!), I want to pull my hair out. Dakich is the Mark May of college basketball. I disagree with everything that comes out of his mouth and his delivery is the equivalent of fingernails screeching across the chalkboard. During a Thursday film session for the Spartans, Dakich was commenting on a mistake by Dawson, prompting him to slam his hand against a table. The result is a broken bone in his right (shooting) hand that will cause him to miss the next 4-5 weeks. Dawson averages 10.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He also has 22 steals and 17 blocked shots. Senior center Adreian Payne (16.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG) has missed four straight games with a foot injury, and he is 'doubtful' Saturday vs. Michigan.

Minnesota's leading scorer Andre Hollins (16.2 PPG) suffered a sprained ankle in the opening minutes of this week's home win over Wisconsin. The results of an MRI were negative and there's a chance Hollins will play Saturday at Nebraska. He is listed as 'questionable.'

Alabama played without its second-leading scorer in last night's 68-62 Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: Florida Atlantic head coach Carl Pelini resigns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tulane at Florida Atlantic -4 O/U 46.5

Not much in terms of details/reasons but it was just announced that Florida Atlantic head coach Carl Pelini has resigned. The Owls were much improved this season with road wins over USF and UAB and close losses to MTSU, Rice, and Marshall. Despite an overall record of 2-6 (6-2 ATS), FAU's remaining schedule (vs. Tulane, at Southern Miss, New Mexico State, vs. Florida International) is very favorable.

College Football Handicapping: Week 10 Injury Report

For Thursday’s AAC matchup vs. South Florida, Houston RB Ryan Jackson is ‘questionable’ after possibly sustaining a concussion in last week’s 49-14 win at Rutgers. Jackson has rushed 95 times for a team-high 477 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

USC is hoping to get star WR Marquise Lee (knee) back for Friday’s game at Oregon State. Lee missed last week’s win over Utah and is ‘questionable’ against the Beavers. The Trojans will be without starting TE Randall Telfer and the laundry list of defensive injuries continues to grow. DE Morgan Breslin, who had a team-high 13 sacks in 2012, remains ‘out’ with a hip injury. Starting LB Lamar Dawson was recently lost to a season-ending injury along with reserve safety Gerald Bowman. Starting cornerback Anthony Brown (arm) is also ‘out’ at OSU.

Mike Riley’s team has plenty of its own injury concerns. On the last play of Oregon State’s 20-12 home loss to Stanford last week, WR Kevin Cummings was lost for the season with a broken wrist. Cummings had 23 receptions for 254 yards and two TDs during his senior Read more

College Football Betting: Syracuse names Hunt starting quarterback

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tulane at Syracuse -15 O/U 54.5

Syracuse is making a change at quarterback with sophomore Terrel Hunt getting the start against Tulane. Senior Drew Allen started the Orange's first three games and was replaced by Hunt during last week's win over Wagner. Note that Allen, who has undoubtedly struggled (2 TDs, 6 INTs),, played against Northwestern and Penn State while Hunt played a half against Wagner (15-for-18, 265 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT).

"We'll take it one series at a time and one game at a time," Shafer said. "And as long as the production is where we expect it to be, then whoever is getting those snaps will continue to play."

College Football Betting: Week 3 Injury Report

Louisiana Tech sophomore running back Kenneth Dixon enjoyed a banner freshman campaign, rushing for 1,194 yards and 27 touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Dixon sustained a knee injury in last week’s 27-14 win over Lamar and he’s questionable Thursday night vs. Tulane. Even if Dixon can’t go, I don’t know that bettors should downgrade Tech’s offense. Before Dixon became the starter last season, fellow freshman Tevin King started three games and rushed for 369 yards and five TDs. King, who averaged 8.0 ypc before suffering a season-ending injury, replaced Dixon when he went down last week. He responded by exploding for 182 yard rushing on 20 carries. As of early Wednesday, most books had the Bulldogs favored by -7.5 over the Green Wave.

TCU senior quarterback Casey Pachall is out until at least late October with a forearm injury. Therefore, sophomore signal caller Trevone Boykin will get the starting nod Thursday night at Texas Tech. Boykin started nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2012. He threw for 2,054 yards with a 15/10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Boykin also rushed for 417 yards and three TDs. In relief of Pachall in Read more

College Basketball Gambling Free Play: Pepperdine Waves at Tulane Green Wave

Pepperdine +8 at Tulane
Recommendation: Pepperdine

Despite knowing that this is the championship game of Tulane’s own holiday tournament and that the Green Wave is off to an 8-3 start this season, I have a hard time finding the eight points worth of separation given to them in this contest. Tulane’s non-conference schedule ranks 345th according to Ken Pom. Their slate is littered with teams that own RPI’s of 200 or worse – Georgia Tech and Nebraska are their only opponents possessing an RPI better than 214. Pepperdine’s schedule has not been much better, but it is better. The Waves have faced a pair of PAC-12 opponents (Cal and Washington State) along with early season surprise Cal State-Northridge and a much improved Central Michigan team (5-4 SU, 5-3 ATS vs. a tough schedule).

Fundamentally these teams are very similar statistically on defense but Pepperdine holds more than just a slight edge in almost every offensive Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Oddsmakers screw up Tulane-Pepperdine line

12.20.2012     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
Pepperdine at Tulane -7.5

Check out the odd line move situation that has taken place for tonight's Pepperdine-Tulane game. Both teams played last night as a part of the Tulane Classic. BetOnline, which is typically the first to post lines during the afternoon opened with Tulane as an 8-point favorite – which on initial glance appeared to be in the ballpark. But CRIS opened the game a pick 'em and proceeded to be peppered with a flood of Tulane money. The line jumped to -3.5 where it stood until this morning. BetOnline, which copies CRIS's lines, went from Tulane -6 to -1.5 where again it stood until this morning. CRIS meanwhile spotted what was seemingly was an error and reposted the game Tulane -7.5 about an hour ago. We'd be curious to know if CRIS canceled those overnight bets due to the miscue. Line histories courtesy of CRIS and BetOnline.

College Football Gambling: UL-Lafayette comfortable with Broadway at quarterback

Tulane at Louisiana-Lafayette -23.5 O/U 56.5

UL-Lafayette will start quarterback Terrance Broadway this weekend against Tulane. Last week Broadway spelled starter Blaine Gautier who broke his wrist. Head coach Mark Hudspeth said Gautier won't play quarterback again this season though he may see playing time in the secondary once he heals. Broadway finished the game 15-of-19 for 228 yards as the Ragin Cajuns rolled up Florida International 48-20.

“There’s no looking past this game, I can assure you that,” Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth said Monday. “We had a 45-minute meeting last night, and we talked about the importance of this game. I went through and read to them all the scores (in the series) going back to 1911, and there were some pretty lopsided scores, and we’ve taken our lumps on most of Read more

College Football Betting: Tulane getting desperate at quarterback position

09.26.2012     06:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Monroe -18 at Tulane O/U 56

Thing have gotten so bad for Tulane that they are bringing players back who left the team in favor of a different sport. Quarterbacks Ryan Griffin and Devin Powell are banged up and may not be available to play Saturday. That leaves DJ Ponder who returned to the team in mid-August after a stint playing professional baseball.  Ponder has experience having saw action during both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The only problem is he's not very good: 26-for-62, 216 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs. Head coach Curtis Johnson will determine who will start on Thursday.

“Yeah, I’m just excited to see him play. I want to see him play,” Tulane Coach Curtis Johnson said. “He looked good today, he had a great practice.”

“D.J.’s been here five years,” Griffin Read more

College Football Betting: SEC News and Notes Week 4

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No real surprises in the SEC this weekend except of course for the ongoing circus currently taking place in Fayetteville. Arkansas got quarterback Tyler Wilson back in the lineup for its non-conference home tilt against Rutgers, but still took it on the chin, 35-26. Wilson threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice. Arkansas’ defense was torched again, giving up 35 points and 525 yards of total offense to what had been a mediocre Rutgers offense. They have now allowed over 1,800 yards in four games and they face another test this week at Texas A&M.

The closest thing to an upset was Auburn’s near miss at home against LSU. The Tigers fought valiantly, but couldn’t muster enough offense to pull off the upset. Auburn held LSU to 12 points, but their offense had just 183 total yards and committed three turnovers. LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger didn’t set the world on fire, but finished a solid 15-of-27 for 169 yards and no interceptions in his first SEC road start.

The newest SEC member, Missouri, found out how tough life on the road in the SEC can be at South Carolina. The Gamecocks Read more
