Sun Belt Conference Tournament Betting Preview

Sun Belt Conference Tournament Preview

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament has a long history of craziness. Upsets happen with regularity, like last season when the top two seeds were bounced in their first game and the finals featured a No. 5 vs. No. 7 matchup. Of the last 12 teams to participate in the championship game, seven were a fourth seed or lower. On paper No. 1 Middle Tennessee State is as close to a lock as you can get to cut down the nets this conference tournament season. The Blue Raiders rolled through league play (14-2) last year and lost to No. 9 Arkansas State in the quarterfinals but this year’s edition is even stronger; a veteran club on a mission.

First Round Pick: North Texas
For much of the season, North Texas was an easy bet against. Longtime head coach Johnny Jones left for LSU, they had a ton of injuries, and Tony Mitchell underperformed. But the Mean Green have talent and a little bit of confidence having won four of six to close out the regular season. The also got point guard Chris Jones back. Jones missed practically all of January and February but returned and played the last two Read more

Duquesne at -ULLafayette -3
Recommendation: Louisiana-Lafayette

I think this is a difficult spot for Duquesne as they make an isolated road trip to UL-Lafayette before the holiday break. The Dukes are a talented but young squad that relies heavily of three-point shooting. With the exception of a 34.6% effort from three at Appalachian State (2-8), the Dukes have shot 27%, 25%, 24%, 18% and 17% from deep away from home. And of those five games, four featured 41% FG shooting or less. Also a concern should be their performance from that charity stripe with a season average of 62%. Lafayette is also very young but has had a few performances that suggest they are capable. Earlier in the year they lost by six at Boise State and lost by three at Michigan State. Last time out, they had a five-point lead in the second half against a quality Robert Morris squad but ended up falling short 66-61. Note that Robert Morris beat Duquesne by 22 two weeks ago. East Carolina vs. Louisiana-Lafayette
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more

College Football Gambling: Quick takes on bowl game motivation Part I

12.04.2012     01:29 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's bowl season and that means motivation becomes a big factor in our handicap. One thing bettors must realize is a lot can happen from now until game day. Teams off disappointing regular seasons have plenty of time to lick their wounds whereas the excitement of reaching the postseason for others can easily wear off. Let's have a little fun and try and forecast the current state of mind of these bowl bound squads. Part I today, Part II tomorrow.

Nevada vs. Arizona - Rich Rod has to be pleased to be bowling in his first year. And Nevada – who somehow owns the weaker defense in this matchup – is no doubt excited it doesn't have to play in the Military Bowl in DC. Edge: Arizona

Toledo vs. Utah State - Win the WAC, get shipped to the Potato Bowl...yippee! Finished tied for second in the MAC West, get shipped to the Potato Bowl...yippee! Edge: None

BYU vs. San Diego State - BYU has been locked into the Poinsettia Bowl for nearly a month. SDSU played in this same bowl back in 2010 and beat Navy 35-14. Edge: None

Ball State vs. Central Florida - Lose the C-USA Championship Read more

College Football ATS Analysis: Sun Belt has struggled as bowl game betting favorites

12.04.2012     11:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some rarified air for the Sun Belt this bowl season with three favorites of -5 or more. UL-Lafayette, playing in its second bowl game in school history, is a 5.5-point favorite over East Carolina in the New Orleans Bowl. Western Kentucky is a 6-point favorite over Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Bowl. It marks the first-ever bowl for the Hilltoppers. Sun Belt champ Arkansas State is 5-point chalk over Kent State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. And also making its first-ever postseason appearance in UL-Monroe who is a touchdown favorite over Ohio in the Independence Bowl.

Now is all four instances, on paper, the Sun Belt teams are deserving of being the chalk. The New Orleans is practically a home game for ULL. Central Michigan has to be the worst of all of the bowl entrants. Arkansas State outscored its last five opponents 218-103. And Monroe is playing an Ohio squad that lost four of five after starting the season 7-0. However, history shows us that the Sun Belt hasn't had a lot of success as postseason chalk. Dating back to 2008, SB schools have been favored six times and only once did they manage to cover the pointspread. And of those six games, the highest Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Florida State Seminoles

Florida at Florida State
Ian Cameron's Recommendation:
Florida State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -8
CRIS Current: Florida State -8.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -5.5

The Florida Gators have put together a strong season and are still hanging by a thread in the BCS Championship hunt – they need A LOT to go their way to have a shot. They do however appear to be running out of gas and coupled with some key injuries, are not in the best of situations for their rivalry tilt against Florida State.

The numbers certainly back up my theory on Florida’s regression. It all started when they suffered their first loss of the season against Georgia, 17-9. It was a turnover plagued, lethargic performance and the Gators have yet to truly rebound. Since then, they squeaked out a pair of seven-point home wins against Missouri and UL-Lafayette. College Football Betting: Florida hoping to open up offense vs. UL-Lafayette

11.07.2012     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Florida -26.5 O/U 50.5

Florida is hoping that this weekend's step down in class will allow the offense, particularly the passing game, to produce better numbers. Only one non-option team (Temple) averages fewer passing yards per game than the Gators (140.1). Earlier this season against the soft defenses of Tennessee and Kentucky, Florida had its two top passing outputs of the season. UL-Lafayette ranks 118th in pass defense at 294.6 ypg allowed.

“That’s a stat that you look at and say, ‘Well, they’ve given up some stuff,’ ” Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease said. “We should get it going, I guess. Those stats are saying that you can.”

“We went no-huddle this week to kind of get our tempo going,” Florida Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Numbers show UL-Lafayette with big advantage over North Texas

Louisiana-Lafayette -4 at North Texas O/U 56

According to our ACCU-Stats, UL-Lafayette has a significant advantage in the run game over North Texas for tonight's Sun Belt matchup on ESPN2. The Ragin' Cajuns are 1.76 ypc better offensively and an astronomical 2.21 ypc better on defense. In last season's meeting, neither team was able to crack 100 yards on the ground (2.47 ypc combined) as ULL won 30-10 as 8.5-point home chalk.

College Football Gambling: UL-Lafayette comfortable with Broadway at quarterback

Tulane at Louisiana-Lafayette -23.5 O/U 56.5

UL-Lafayette will start quarterback Terrance Broadway this weekend against Tulane. Last week Broadway spelled starter Blaine Gautier who broke his wrist. Head coach Mark Hudspeth said Gautier won't play quarterback again this season though he may see playing time in the secondary once he heals. Broadway finished the game 15-of-19 for 228 yards as the Ragin Cajuns rolled up Florida International 48-20.

“There’s no looking past this game, I can assure you that,” Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth said Monday. “We had a 45-minute meeting last night, and we talked about the importance of this game. I went through and read to them all the scores (in the series) going back to 1911, and there were some pretty lopsided scores, and we’ve taken our lumps on most of Read more

NCAA Gambling Free Pick: Arkansas-Littlle Rock at UL-Lafayette

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas-Little Rock +6 at UL-Lafayette O/U 129
Recommendation: Arkansas-Little Rock

Two of the top teams in the Sun Belt meet for round two of their season series tonight in Lafayette. Arkansas-Little Rock is 8-2 in conference play with identical 4-1 home and road marks. They have already won at North Texas and Denver and their only loss was a game in which they fell apart late at Western Kentucky. UALR allowed a five-point lead to turn into a 12-point loss in the final five minutes of that game. ULL handed UALR its only conference home loss three weeks ago, winning 68-49. Little Rock comes into this game on another streak with three straight home wins. The Cajuns are also hot, winning four in a row to push their Sun Belt mark to 8-3. Lafayette has struggled at home, however, with their last four home games resulting in an overtime win, a 2-point win, another overtime win and a loss to South Alabama. Their blowout of UALR on the road and their conference opening win against FAU are the Cajuns only double-digit wins of the year. Take the points here.
