Appalachian State at UL-Lafayette
Saturday, 11 am PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -11 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -9 O/U 63
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -14
Paul Stone's Recommendation: UL-Lafayette

Saturday's Sun Belt showdown down on the Louisiana bayou Saturday afternoon features a pair of teams which struggled during the season's opening half, but have found their stride and are definitely playing their best football at the present.

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (7-3 on the season, 6-0 in conference) entertain the Appalachian State Mountaineers (5-5, 4-2) Saturday in a matchup of high-powered offenses.

Both teams endured rough stretches earlier in their season before rebounding in conference action.

The Ragin' Cajuns survived a three-game September losing streak, stumbling badly to a trio of eventual bowl teams _ Louisiana Tech, Mississippi and Boise State _ by an average of 31 points. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, stood at 1-5 on Oct. 11 after falling at home to FCS entry Liberty, 55-48, in overtime.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: UL-Lafayette gets much needed rest

UL-Lafayette vs. Creighton -13.5 O/U 154.5

UL-Lafayette caught a little bit of a break by drawing a Friday first round matchup. The Ragin Cajuns won three games – all barn burners – en route to the Sun Belt title. In fact ULL's last five games were decided by 3, 1, 6, 1, and 1 (OT).

“We played three days in a row, and it took everything out of us. But we’re gonna get that rest, and we’ll be ready to go Friday.”

“I’m glad we’re gonna play on Friday,” he said. “That extra day of rest will be important, for sure.”

Texas State at UL-Lafayette -8
Recommendation: UL-Lafayette

Huge contrast in style between these teams as fast paced ULL faces turtle-style Texas State. Current KenPom numbers show the Bobcats to rank #333 out of 351 Division 1 schools in adjusted tempo while the Ragin Cajuns are #20. Rapid adjustment is the main concern since ULL is just two days removed from destroying Texas-Arlington 90-70 in a preferred fast tempo game. ULL head coach Bob Marlin is warning his team that tonight is a totally different game and he compared Texas State to former Sun Belt foe Denver. The only opponent ULL has played that’s near the tempo range of Texas State is UL-Monroe and that contests ended in a 103-98 double OT loss. Lafayette got Monroe to go a bit quicker (74-74 at the end of regulation) but had difficulty defending the excellent shooting Warhawks who are hitting 49.4% from the field this season. Texas State does not pose that type of team shooting prowess (only 44% for the season) which could help ULL tonight but it’s also interesting to note that Texas State played at UL-Monroe two days ago and held them to 29% shooting in a 61-36 rout. College Football Betting: UL-Lafayette's Broadway practiced but still doubtful

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Lafayette vs. Tulane -2.5 O/U 49

There appears to be a small chance that UL-Lafayette quarterback Terrance Broadway could play in Saturday's New Orleans Bowl against Tulane. Broadway has a broken bone in his throwing arm but was able to practice yesterday. If he is unable to go, backups Brooks Haack and Jalen Nixon will reportedly split time.

“I thought he improved, but he still has a long ways to go based on what the young man has done,” Hudspeth said. “And he wants to be out there really bad.

“Realistically, though, we’ve got to see by Saturday, which is still a little time, if he progresses, and to make sure that thing is healed up.”

“We sort of know what we’re gonna do,” Hudspeth said somewhat cryptically. “Things maybe Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 15 Injury Report

12.06.2013     11:31 AM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri starting strong safety Duron Singleton is ‘questionable’ for Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against Auburn. Singleton missed last Saturday’s win over Texas A&M with a hip injury.

UL-Lafayette will most likely be without its outstanding quarterback Saturday at South Alabama. Junior Terrance Broadway is ‘doubtful’ against the Jaguars due to a wrist injury. Broadway has a 19-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio, in addition to eight rushing TDs. Redshirt freshman Brooks Haack will most likely get his first career start under center for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He had only appeared at garbage time until playing in the second half of last week’s 31-28 home loss to ULM. Haack has completed 16-of-21 throws for 175 yards and one TD without an interception. Also, UL-Lafayette starting safety Darius Barksdale is ‘questionable’ with a hand injury.

SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert (21-7 TD-INT) has been downgraded to ‘doubtful’ for Saturday’s game vs. UCF due to a sore knee. Without Gilbert last week, the Mustangs lost 34-0 at Houston. It was the first time a team coached by June Jones had Read more

College Football Handicapping: UL-Lafayette travels to Western Kentucky

Louisiana-Lafayette at Western Kentucky -4 O/U 62.5

Funky early week matchup in the Sun Belt tonight with UL-Lafayette headed to Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers have covered three straight in the series, all as an underdog. WKU last played October 3, while ULL has played only one game since September 21. Historically, no real angle for home teams in these situations (31-29 SU, 28-31-1 ATS) but the UNDER has been a profitable bet at 16-25-1 O/U.

College Football Gambling: UL-Lafayette brings in new defensive coordinator

08.23.2013     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Offense wasn't an issue for UL-Lafayette last season as the Ragin' Cajuns rolled up a Sun Belt-leading 486.3 ypg of offense in conference play. The problem was defense as they allowed a Sun Belt-worst 457.6 ypg. This past offseason, third-year head coach Mark Hudspeth brought in former NFL linebacker James Willis to serve as defensive coordinator. Willis last served as DC at Texas Tech in 2010. The Red Raiders finished 114th in total defense that year (456.3 ypg).

“Our strength right now is gonna have to be in the middle. We rely on everything we do up front,” said Willis, who calls the Cajun defense inexperienced “across the board.”

“We build our defense from inside out, and up front we do have some big, very physical, athletic guys. Right now that is the focal point of our defense. That’s what we will build everything around … because that, to me, is our foundation.”

“I think Coach Willis’ best attribute is that he is a teacher. At linebacker, I can pretty much tell what is happening Read more

Sun Belt Conference Tournament Betting Preview

Sun Belt Conference Tournament Preview

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament has a long history of craziness. Upsets happen with regularity, like last season when the top two seeds were bounced in their first game and the finals featured a No. 5 vs. No. 7 matchup. Of the last 12 teams to participate in the championship game, seven were a fourth seed or lower. On paper No. 1 Middle Tennessee State is as close to a lock as you can get to cut down the nets this conference tournament season. The Blue Raiders rolled through league play (14-2) last year and lost to No. 9 Arkansas State in the quarterfinals but this year’s edition is even stronger; a veteran club on a mission.

First Round Pick: North Texas
For much of the season, North Texas was an easy bet against. Longtime head coach Johnny Jones left for LSU, they had a ton of injuries, and Tony Mitchell underperformed. But the Mean Green have talent and a little bit of confidence having won four of six to close out the regular season. The also got point guard Chris Jones back. Jones missed practically all of January and February but returned and played the last two Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Duquesne Dukes at UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Duquesne at -ULLafayette -3
Recommendation: Louisiana-Lafayette

I think this is a difficult spot for Duquesne as they make an isolated road trip to UL-Lafayette before the holiday break. The Dukes are a talented but young squad that relies heavily of three-point shooting. With the exception of a 34.6% effort from three at Appalachian State (2-8), the Dukes have shot 27%, 25%, 24%, 18% and 17% from deep away from home. And of those five games, four featured 41% FG shooting or less. Also a concern should be their performance from that charity stripe with a season average of 62%. Lafayette is also very young but has had a few performances that suggest they are capable. Earlier in the year they lost by six at Boise State and lost by three at Michigan State. Last time out, they had a five-point lead in the second half against a quality Robert Morris squad but ended up falling short 66-61. Note that Robert Morris beat Duquesne by 22 two weeks ago. The Cajun Dome is Read more

CRIS Opener:
UL-Lafayette -4.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: UL-Lafayette -5 O/U 65.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: UL-Lafayette -4.5

UL-Lafayette makes its second straight trip to the New Orleans bowl after defeating San Diego State 32-30 as 6-point underdogs last season. It was a pro Ragin' Cajuns crowd but the Superdome was only about half full and East Carolina should travel much better than the Aztecs. ECU returns to the postseason after finishing 5-7 last year. They were blown out by Maryland, 51-20, in the 2010 Military Bowl.

The turning point for UL-Lafayette was its road win over UL-Monroe. They benefited from the Warhawks losing quarterback Kolton Browning to injury late in the first half, but it was still a significant victory. The following week they nearly Read more
