College Football Gambling: UTEP fires offensive coordinator

We'd be wasting your time by rummaging through all of the horrific offensive statistics UTEP has posted through three games. Actually there is one worth mentioning; the team's 99.4 QB Rating. Rumor has it you start with 85.0 prior to the coin toss. Head coach Sean Kugler, who can't possibly last beyond this year, decided to fire offensive coordinator Brent Pease (remember how bad his Florida offenses were?). Tight ends and special teams coach Brian Natkin will now be in charge of calling plays. Miners travel to New Mexico State this weekend.

Pretty remarkable turnaround for UTEP after starting the season 2-13. The Miners have won six of seven thanks to some savvy coaching by veteran Tim Floyd. Floyd slowed down the tempo of the games and created a lot of confusion for the opposition by constantly switching defenses. Over the last seven games, UTEP has allowed 58 ppg in regulation. This is the same team that in mid-December coughed up 76 in a home loss to 327th-ranked Northern Arizona. Louisiana Tech isn't as offensively dynamic as last year's squad that scored 78 and 80 in both meetings vs. UTEP. Instead, the Bulldogs have been getting it done on the defensive end of the floor with the league's third-best defensive efficiency (0.94). They've been especially dominant against the weaker offenses in C-USA. Tech has faced four of the five teams in the league currently averaging less than a point per possession and held those four squads to 56.3 ppg.
