Quick look at some of the early moves in the Week 5 college football betting markets.

Maryland at Indiana
CRIS Opener: Indiana -2.5
CRIS Current: Indiana -4

CRIS Current: Kansas State -26.5
Comment: Miners off a bye week and look much improved in 2-1 start. Conference game on deck for K-State.

Bowling Green at UMass
CRIS Opener: Bowling Green -10.5
CRIS Current: Bowling Green -8.5
Comment: Perhaps a step down in class for UMass after four straight vs. power conference foes two of which were 3-point losses. Falcons allowed 644 yards on the ground in loss to Wisky.

College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at UTEP Miners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Mexico State at UTEP
Saturday, 5 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
UTEP -10.5 O/U 62.5
CRIS Current: UTEP -10 O/U 56
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: UTEP -10
Drew Martin’s Recommendation: UTEP

In the 92nd edition of the Battle of I-10, UTEP will play host to New Mexico State on Saturday night in the Sun Bowl. The undefeated New Mexico State Aggies will make the journey from Las Cruces to El Paso in an attempt to win for the first time in this rivalry since 2008. As we dig into this out-of-conference matchup, we uncover some reasons to be skeptical of the undefeated underdog.

New Mexico State opened its season playing host to Cal Poly. The Aggies got the win, but it took until the middle of the fourth quarter to put Poly away with the final score being 28-10. The Aggies then went on the road in Week 2 in a conference matchup against Georgia State and came out of the Georgia Dome with a Read more

After further review, UTEP's suspensions for sports betting are ridiculous

01.09.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The smoke has cleared following the suspension of three UTEP players for sports betting. As mentioned, there is currently no evidence – according to the FBI and university – that the players bet on UTEP games or where shaving points. Now it is pretty obvious that with the FBI's involvement, there was a one point suspicion of exactly that. Certainly the FBI is aware that betting on sports is fairly common among college athletes – so common that a poll from 2012 showed that 57% of male athletes gambled on sports in some capacity. What is concerning is how quickly the players were shown the door. The NCAA stipulates that athletes caught gambling will be suspended for one year as well as lose a year of eligibility. As pointed out by local ESPN radio host Steve Kaplowitz, the situation is unprecedented in that there haven't been many (if any) cases of athletes being suspended for sports betting that Read more

Update: No evidence of point shaving at UTEP, kids suspended for betting on sports

01.07.2014     02:37 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

False alarm. No point shaving at UTEP just a couple of kids betting on sports. Good thing the FBI was on top of it as Operation Waste of Time goes down as a "W."

"To date, there was no indication that point shaving was involved. However, per NCAA rules, any type of sports gambling is prohibited and results in a one-year suspension and loss of a year of eligibility," the school said in a statement. "All three players are upperclassmen, and therefore their college basketball careers are over. They are no longer enrolled at UTEP and are no longer a part of our basketball program."

UTEP Miners at center of point shaving rumors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's your annual college basketball point shaving rumor. Back on December 28, UTEP suspended leading scorer McKenzie Moore and Jalen Ragland for violation of team rules. Head coach Tim Floyd wouldn't spill the beans but said that details of the suspension would eventually be revealed. So with no answers and time to kill, rumors began to swirl – one such rumor being point shaving. UTEP hasn't played since December 29 and plays host to Charlotte on Thursday.

College Basketball Gambling: Auburn seeks better defensive effort

12.19.2013     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Clemson -5.5 at Auburn O/U 128.5

Auburn head coach Tony Barbee not pleased with his team's defensive effort following a 99-70 loss at Iowa State and a 81-62 loss to Illinois. In 2010, Barbee's last season at UTEP, the Miners allowed 0.90 points per possession which ranked 12th nationally. And despite being outmanned in the SEC, his defense at Auburn had been respectable (1.00, 0.95, 1.00) prior to this year. Clemson has the nation's no. 3 defense (0.91) and plays at an extremely slow pace (61.9). If Auburn responds to Barbee's request, tonight's game has a good chance to go under the total.

“Hopefully (those losses) opened everybody’s eyes that the things that we have to do that need to become our identity, we’re not doing them,” Barbee said. “We’ve got to be a gritty, grimy, Read more

C-USA Tournament Betting Preview

C-USA Tournament Preview

Top seed Memphis has won six of the last seven conference tournaments but five of those were in the friendly confines of the FedEx Forum. This year's tournament is in Tulsa and the champion will have to win at least three games. Memphis didn't lose a regular season conference game and is obviously headed to the Big Dance regardless of this week's outcome. No. 2 seed Southern Miss is in the at-large discussion but it'll need no less than a title game appearance to be considered. Central Florida would have been the fourth seed but is ineligible for the postseason.

First Round Pick/Darkhorse: Name a team in college basketball that endured more emotional highs and lows than Marshall. You probably could drum up a similar situation but the Thundering Herd have been there and back and then some this season. What we know about this squad is that on any given day they can beat anyone in the league. Despite its 6-10 league record, Marshall swept Central Florida, just beat No. 2 seed Southern Miss (after losing to the Eagles by 56 in late January), and went on the road to Memphis and lost by 1. They have absolutely Read more

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 3-9-2013

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A few links for this weekend’s college basketball action. The theme with most of these is the dreaded MUST WIN SITUATION!

Boise State is reportedly in a must win situation vs. San Diego State. The Aztecs won the first meeting 63-62.

A lot of games Maryland plays these days are considered must win – especially Wednesday's matchup vs. North Carolina in which Terps’ guards P'Shon Howard, Logan Aronhalt, Seth Allen combined to shoot 2-of-19 from the floor. On to Virginia, boys!

Things didn't work out well for Kentucky's must win game at Georgia. That means today's matchup against Florida is even more must win!

Nebraska's Tim Miles is calling today's game at Iowa Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks at UTEP Miners

Oregon -4.5 at UTEP O/U 129
Recommendation: Oregon

Dana Altman has been a master at guiding his teams to wins in close games dating all the way back to his first head coaching job at Kansas State in back in the 90's. It was a similar story during his decade and a half coaching at Creighton.

Altman took a seven win Bluejays team upon arrival and turned them into an NCAA tourney team from a 1 or 2 bid conference for five consecutive years within four years of taking the job. He's building a similar program at Oregon; a squad that won seven PAC-12 games in his first year on the job, then went 13-5 in conference last year. Oregon is, quite simply a well-coached team that is quite likely to make us money this year, just like they did last year when they were a 'Top 25' team in terms of profitability!

The Ducks are balanced, with six players averaging between nine and eleven points per game, able to withstand a poor performance from just about anyone on Read more

College Football Handicapping: East Carolina embraces 3-4 defense

10.01.2012     09:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
East Carolina at Central Florida -14.5

We mentioned last week how Tennessee was having difficulty adjusting to its newly implemented 3-4 defensive scheme (they allowed 560 yards and 51 points to Georgia on Saturday). East Carolina meanwhile is two years into its 3-4 scheme and the switch is starting to pay off. In 2010, ECU ranked dead last nationally in total defense at 478.8 ypg. Last year they jumped to 56th (376.3). This year, with the exception of the South Carolina game (48 points, 528 yards) the Pirates have been solid holding Appalachian State, Southern Miss, North Carolina and UTEP 18 ppg. Read more
