C-USA Tournament Preview

Top seed Memphis has won six of the last seven conference tournaments but five of those were in the friendly confines of the FedEx Forum. This year's tournament is in Tulsa and the champion will have to win at least three games. Memphis didn't lose a regular season conference game and is obviously headed to the Big Dance regardless of this week's outcome. No. 2 seed Southern Miss is in the at-large discussion but it'll need no less than a title game appearance to be considered. Central Florida would have been the fourth seed but is ineligible for the postseason.

First Round Pick/Darkhorse: Name a team in college basketball that endured more emotional highs and lows than Marshall. You probably could drum up a similar situation but the Thundering Herd have been there and back and then some this season. What we know about this squad is that on any given day they can beat anyone in the league. Despite its 6-10 league record, Marshall swept Central Florida, just beat No. 2 seed Southern Miss (after losing to the Eagles by 56 in late January), and went on the road to Memphis and lost by 1. They have absolutely Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A few links for this weekend’s college basketball action. The theme with most of these is the dreaded MUST WIN SITUATION!

Boise State is reportedly in a must win situation vs. San Diego State. The Aztecs won the first meeting 63-62.

A lot of games Maryland plays these days are considered must win – especially Wednesday's matchup vs. North Carolina in which Terps’ guards P'Shon Howard, Logan Aronhalt, Seth Allen combined to shoot 2-of-19 from the floor. On to Virginia, boys!

Things didn't work out well for Kentucky's must win game at Georgia. That means today's matchup against Florida is even more must win!

Nebraska's Tim Miles is calling today's game at Iowa Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks at UTEP Miners

Oregon -4.5 at UTEP O/U 129
Recommendation: Oregon

Dana Altman has been a master at guiding his teams to wins in close games dating all the way back to his first head coaching job at Kansas State in back in the 90's. It was a similar story during his decade and a half coaching at Creighton.

Altman took a seven win Bluejays team upon arrival and turned them into an NCAA tourney team from a 1 or 2 bid conference for five consecutive years within four years of taking the job. He's building a similar program at Oregon; a squad that won seven PAC-12 games in his first year on the job, then went 13-5 in conference last year. Oregon is, quite simply a well-coached team that is quite likely to make us money this year, just like they did last year when they were a 'Top 25' team in terms of profitability!

The Ducks are balanced, with six players averaging between nine and eleven points per game, able to withstand a poor performance from just about anyone on Read more

College Football Handicapping: East Carolina embraces 3-4 defense

East Carolina at Central Florida -14.5

We mentioned last week how Tennessee was having difficulty adjusting to its newly implemented 3-4 defensive scheme (they allowed 560 yards and 51 points to Georgia on Saturday). East Carolina meanwhile is two years into its 3-4 scheme and the switch is starting to pay off. In 2010, ECU ranked dead last nationally in total defense at 478.8 ypg. Last year they jumped to 56th (376.3). This year, with the exception of the South Carolina game (48 points, 528 yards) the Pirates have been solid holding Appalachian State, Southern Miss, North Carolina and UTEP 18 ppg. Read more

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin benches QB O'Brien, frosh to start vs. UTEP

UTEP at Wisconsin -17.5 O/U 48.5

We knew Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien wasn't going to duplicate Russell Wilson's success but three games into the season, O'Brien already finds himself on the bench. The Badgers will start freshman Joel Stave against UTEP on Saturday. Stave replaced O'Brien in last week's game against Utah State after O'Brien lost a fumble.

"I think any of the quarterbacks would admit that Joel has the best arm out of all of them," Bielema said. "He's got great composure. . . . Joel's pretty educated.

"Now, obviously he's only got one half under his belt as a quarterback that's out there on the field. So that's the part that's the unknown."

Nebraska at Purdue – The dismissal of guard Kelsey Barlow from the team puts Purdue in a “by committee” situation at the two-guard spot. Previously suspended junior D.J. Byrd will return to the lineup tonight and likely start in Barlow’s absence. Byrd has been better than Barlow almost across the board in offensive categories and with his minutes bumped, should be able to fill that void. The problem will be on the defensive end where, as star F Robbie Hummel said “he was our lock down guy, when the other team had a hot hand we looked to Kelsey to shut him down.” Against Nebraska’s backcourt tonight, having a defensive stopper may not hurt the Boilermakers but with Michigan and Indiana on the horizon, Purdue will need their “committee” to provide an answer.

West Virginia at Notre Dame – The first time around in Morgantown, ND walked out with a slim 55-51 upset as a +6.5 point underdog. The number one reason for the loss from West Virginia’s standpoint was its 2-of-16 12.5% three-point shooting and 0, yes ZERO points scored from their second leading scorer (16.7 ppg) Darrell Read more

College Basketball Free Pick: UTEP Miners at Marshall Thundering Herd

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UTEP +12 at Marshall O/U 130
Recommendation: UTEP

Marshall is expected to contend for a Conference-USA championship and that in my opinion has them a little overvalued entering league play. The Thundering Herd are a talented and experienced team and we cashed with them earlier this season in their 62-56 loss at Syracuse (+15.5). A road win at Cincinnati and home win over Belmont shows some of the strength and potential of this Marshall squad. But UTEP (8-2 ATS) is improving and playing better after a 1-4 start with outright underdog wins on a neutral court against Clemson and Auburn and a competitive contest against top-25 Kansas State. Road losses at UNLV and Oregon were also competitive covers despite being 17-point underdogs. Senior forward Gabriel McCalley is an anchor inside and young forwards Bohannon and Lang are rapidly improving while leading the team in rebounding and hitting 52% and 69% of their shots respectively. Transfer point man Jacques Streeter Read more

UTEP +10.5 vs. Kansas State O/U 128
Recommendation: UTEP

Few teams if any have improved more over the last few weeks than UTEP. It all started after the Miners lost to Stephen F. Austin at home 53-35. Tim Floyd decided with a host of inexperience and youth that the best thing to do was to shorten the game and play at a slow pace in order to just stick around. The move paid off as the Miners went to Oregon and lost by six and then beat New Mexico State after losing to the Aggies by 16 a month earlier. They then hung at UNLV in an 11-point loss and last night dominated Clemson 61-48. Kansas State has done nothing wrong this season with wins over Virginia Tech and Alabama and a double-OT loss to West Virginia. But in a neutral site setting, where laying this type of price can be extremely dangerous, I see no reason that UTEP can't grind its way to another spread cover.

UTEP vs. Clemson -7.5 O/U 117.5

Looks like UTEP will be forced to get creative defensively with the loss of big men Hooper Vint (6-10) and Malcom Moore (6-7). Note that Sports Options currently lists both players at OUT. The Miners open up the Diamond Head Classic this afternoon against the stingy defense of Clemson.

The Tigers, who are 6-4, are seventh in the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 53.6 points a game. They are allowing opponents to shoot just over 38 percent from the field and just 31 percent from 3-point land.

The Miners will be playing without junior college transfer Malcolm Moore, lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and Hooper Vint, the 6-foot-10 freshman, who is day-to-day with back problems.

“We may have to do some things defensively because of our depth," Floyd said. "We Read more

UTEP and UNLV
Recommendation: UNLV -10 1st half

UNLV (9-2) is a legitimate top-25 team with veterans and talented additions that play well together.  First-year coach Dave Rice put the Rebels through a pair of spirited practices this week following their sluggish 62-51 loss at Wisconsin last Saturday. He acknowledged that the team’s energy and execution was poor and the slow start was not acceptable.  The Runnin’ Rebels prefer to push the pace and will likely be able to dictate tempo and come out with fire tonight. UTEP (2-4) head coach Tim Floyd stated that his team is “…completely rebuilding” following last year’s 25-win performance. The Miners have seven freshmen that play at least 10 minutes per game with six having started – Floyd still experimenting with different lineups and rotations. UTEP has shown some improvement the last two games with the return of senior swingman Gabriel McCulley following a foot Read more
