NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Atlanta Hawks at Indiana Pacers

Atlanta at Indiana -8.5 O/U 212
Recommendation: Indiana

It’s circle the wagons time in Indianapolis tonight as the hungry Pacers take on the bottom-feeder Hawks. Indiana is coming off a humiliating home loss to Utah on Wednesday Night; a 20 point defeat in which Nate McMillan’s squad hit only 3-23 from three point range while allowing the Jazz to hit better than 51% from the floor. The Pacers lost at Atlanta just last week in a flat, lethargic effort. And the quotes coming out of this locker room have bet-on written all over them.

Pacers center Myles Turner, their lone offensive bright spot in the loss to Utah: “It's a game we got to take personally. We're at home. We just got beat by 20 at our crib, that can't happen. We got to take that frustration into this game."

Pacers forward Trevor Booker noted what happened last week: “If you look at Atlanta, they are at the bottom, but you have to overlook that because they've been actually playing well lately. They've been moving the ball well and they beat us last time we played them. So we're going to be coming out and trying to avenge that Read more

Minnesota at Utah -7 O/U 208
Recommendation: Utah

Utah went into the All-Star break on a season high ten game winning streak. They’ve come out of the break with some real clunkers, blown off the floor in a 19-point home loss to the Blazers, unable to extend their margin against the hapless Mavericks and struggling throughout an 11-point home loss to the Rockets.

Big man Derrick Favors, following the latest loss: “I definitely think there’s some rust from the all-star break. But it’s easy to fix. We have to improve on communication, on both ends of the floor. We have to improve on little things. But all of our issues, they are easy to fix.”

I concur wholeheartedly. Utah’s defense ranks #2 in the NBA since the All Star Break, allowing just 96.5 PP/100. But their offense has struggled mightily, just 90.7 PP/100; dead last in the NBA during that span. A big problem has been their inability to handle the basketball, dead last in the NBA in turnover percentage since the Break.

First, I don’t expect this to be a long term problem for the Jazz. Head coach Quin Synder, Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizard at Utah Jazz

Washington at Utah -4 O/U 198.5
Recommendation: Over

The Utah Jazz have been in good form having won and covered five straight while averaging 115.4 ppg. Donovan Mitchell (21.8 ppg) along with Derrick Favors and sixth man Alec Burks have led the offensive revival which should continue tonight versus Washington. After a solid run of player imposed dedication on the defensive end of the floor, Washington is now slipping back to it old ways. The focus on defending led the Wizards to a streak of seven straight games in which they held opponents to 100 points or less. They’ve since allowed 108 or more in three of their last five and 107 ppg over that span. That likely becomes troublesome tonight against the hot Utah offense especially since Washington’s game-to-game player quotes of focusing on defense have now quieted. Without the intensity on that end, expect Utah to approach and maybe exceed 110 points tonight. The good news for Washington is that their own offense has continued to be high caliber scoring 108.6 ppg over their last five games despite being without the service of John Wall. NBA Playoff Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Utah Jazz at Golden State Warriors

Utah +13.5 at Golden State O/U 206
Recommendation: Utah

The Golden State Warriors won every stat comparison they could win in their Game 1 victory over Utah.  The Warriors won fast break points 29-6.  They won points off turnovers by a 20-4 margin.  Golden State shot 49% from the floor and outscored the Jazz by ten at the free throw line, hitting 91% of their foul shots too! Golden State had 32 assists on 40 made field goals.  They completely shut down Utah’s Gordon Hayward, held to just 4-of-15 shooting with only four assists and four rebounds.

And yet, when the dust cleared, it was Utah, not Golden State, who cashed winning bets for their backers thanks to a late 8-2 run in the closing minutes with all the starters for both teams sitting on the bench.  That’s the danger of laying double digits in an NBA Playoff game, even with an elite team like the Warriors, very similar to their Game 1 showing against the Blazers.

Jazz head coach Quin Snyder wrote one word on the chalkboard in the locker room prior to their Game 7 win at LA against the Clippers: ‘Compete’.  Read more

Utah -3 at Los Angeles O/U 196.5
Recommendation: Utah

Kudos to the Lakers for overachieving thus far but things are beginning to slip away some due to key injuries. Their recent four-game road trip produced a 1-3 ATS mark and if we push back to November 18, the number becomes 3-7 ATS. That date is significant because it was their first game without starting point guard D’Angelo Russell. From there, LA has dealt with a three-game span in which they were without starting forward Julius Randle due to a hip injury. And three games ago they lost starting guard Nick Young for a month (strained calf). Jose Calderon is also out leaving sixth man Lou Williams as the team's main scorer. Clarkson, Williams and Marcelo Huertas can divide up the minutes at point guard but the cluster of injuries to the backcourt can be preyed upon by opponents. Utah should be able to not only exploit the backcourt but also the small forward spot. Lakers starter Luol Deng and rookie Brandon Graham figure to have their hand full with top scorer Gordon Heyward. LA has no other small forwards since Larry Nance Jr. is nursing a knee Read more

Philadelphia +11.5 at Indiana O/U 210
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Indiana has no business as double digit chalk right now, even against the worst team in the NBA.  Don’t listen to my word – let Paul George tell you himself: “We’re all out of whack. There’s no trust, there’s no chemistry, there’s no belief. We’re kind of just lifeless right now.”

This team bought into Frank Vogel’s message throughout his tenure as Indiana’s head coach.  The first few weeks of the Nate McMillan era hasn’t produced anywhere near that same level of internal chemistry.  McMillan is trying to cobble together cohesive rotations following an offseason of significant personnel turnover, with a new point guard in Jeff Teague, a new starting wing in Thaddeus Young, and a new top scorer off the bench in Al Jefferson, among others.

The betting markets recognized those names; guys with a recent track history of success elsewhere, and have been convinced that the Pacers are primed to be a team on the rise.  But those big name veterans aren’t playing a lick of Read more

NBA Handicapping: Dallas earns playoff berth, Houston knocking on the door

04.12.2016     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA regular season concludes on Wednesday. A few things were determined last night like Cleveland notching the top seed in the Eastern Conference and thus Toronto now locked into the second seed. The spots for the third through sixth seeds are still TBD. Indiana is in position for the seventh seed while Detroit looks likely it will be facing the Cavs in the first round.

The top four seeds in the Western Conference have been filled: Golden State, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles Clippers. The remainder of the West is hazy. Portland, Memphis, and Dallas are in but could finish a number of ways. And with Utah losing to the Mavs, Houston now has the inside track on the eighth seed -- assuming the Rockets can beat Sacramento's corpse on Wednesday. If they lose and Utah beats the Lakers, the Jazz get in.

NBA Gambling: Western Conference playoff race heats up

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the battle of who wants it more (or less), five teams continue to fight for the final four spots in the Western Conference playoffs. Portland is currently sixth with a two-game lead over Houston, Utah, and Dallas. Bettors should also keep an eye on Memphis who has lost four straight and seen its hold of the fifth seed dwindle to two games. Let's take a look at the remaining schedules for all five teams. Houston has arguably the most favorable slate with its last four games coming against teams not in the playoff hunt.

Memphis: vs. Toronto, at Orlando, vs. Chicago, at Dallas, vs. Golden State, at LA Clippers, at Golden State

Portland: vs. Boston, vs. Miami, at Golden State, at Sacramento, vs. Oklahoma City, vs. Minnesota, vs. Denver

Houston: vs. Chicago, vs. Oklahoma City, at Dallas, vs. Phoenix, vs. LA Lakers, at Minnesota, vs. Sacramento

Utah: vs. Minnesota, at Phoenix, vs. San Antonio, vs. LA Clippers, at Denver, vs. Dallas, at LA Lakers

Dallas: at Detroit, at Minnesota, vs. Houston, vs. Memphis, at LA Clippers, at Utah, vs. San Antonio

Toronto pk at Houston O/U 212
Recommendation: Toronto

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Houston Rockets in any pointspread range where they’ll need to win the game in order to cover the number.  It’s been a long, disappointing season for the JB Bickerstaff’s squad, fighting for the #8 seed in the West just one year after reaching the Western Conference Finals.

Wednesday Night’s home loss to Utah was the latest frustrating defeat for Houston, as they blew an 18 point second half lead, losing on a last second dunk by Derrick Favors.  The loss marked Houston’s third consecutive defeat, and fifth in their last seven games.  Their only two wins during this two week span have come against lowly Minnesota (they still didn’t cover the spread in victory) and Memphis when the Grizzlies had only one starter healthy enough to play.  This is not a confident team; nor are they a good team.  Bickerstaff’s post-game quote following the meltdown against the Jazz  didn’t inspire much confidence in this bettor either: “The season’s not over Read more
