NBA Handicapping: Plenty at stake for final day of regular season

04.17.2013     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
USAToday.com breaks down all of the NBA Playoff seeding scenarios for the final day of the regular season.

The Nos. 6, 7 and 8 seeds in the Western Conference remain unsettled. The simplest scenario features the Lakers beating the Houston Rockets, which would give the Golden State Warriors the No. 6 seed, Los Angeles the No. 7 seed and Houston the No. 8 and eliminate the Utah Jazz. Should the Jazz win at the Memphis Grizzlies (who are locked in to the No. 5 seed) and the Rockets beat the Lakers, Los Angeles will miss the playoffs.

The Atlanta Hawks can claim the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference with a win or Chicago Bulls loss. The Bulls would prefer the fifth seed because they went 1-3 vs. the No. 3 seed Indiana Pacers and 3-1 vs. the No. 4 seed Brooklyn Nets. The Hawks split their season series with both.

The Denver Nuggets need a Los Angeles Clippers loss or a home win against the Phoenix Suns to clinch the No. 3 seed in the West. That seed is perhaps the most important left Read more

Utah at Memphis -5 O/U 180

Final day of the NBA regular season and the Utah Jazz are still alive for the eighth seed in the Western Conference. For the Jazz to get in, it's a pretty simple process: win at Memphis and hope the Lakers lose to Houston.

"I guess I need to try to get in touch with Kevin McHale," Al Jefferson said of his former Minnesota coach, now with the Rockets, "and tell him to handle that for me. Give me a late birthday present."

CBSsports.com breaks down the NBA playoff seeding scenarios heading into Monday’s action. The 16-team field is all but set with the Lakers now a game and a half ahead of Utah. The Jazz own the tiebreaker but according to John Hollinger their chances of pulling off a postseason berth are about 5%. The No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the Western Conference remain up for grabs between the Nuggets, Clippers, and Grizzlies.

NBA Handicapping: Portland goes young with Aldridge and Batum out

Memphis -5.5 at Portland O/U 189.5

Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) and Nicolas Batum (arm) will miss tonight's game against Memphis. As a result, the team will start three rookies. In the last three games without Aldridge, the Trail Blazers allowed 112, 124 and 105 points. Two of those contests came against Utah and the Jazz frontcourt had a field day. Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, and Derrick Favors combined to shoot 52-of-82, 63% from the floor with 118 points. Memphis opened -4 and was bet up to -5.5.

“It’s a good opportunity for Meyers and Victor and Will (Barton) to get some minutes on the court,” Stotts said, before noting the team’s goals remain the same. “But we’re going to try to win games. Guys out there are going to play to win. That part hasn’t changed.”

NBA Handicapping: Utah Jazz win fifth in a row, hold half game lead over Lakers

For those of you (us) who have only been half-paying attention to the NBA during the crush of March Madness, it’s time to get caught up on the race for the #8 spot in the Western brackets. I’ve been trusting glances at the mainstream media to keep me informed, which led to a couple of surprises.

*Utah has had trouble shedding its “choker” label, even though they’ve now won five games in a row by margins of 16-15-10-9-10. They’re either 7-0-1 or 8-0 against market prices their last eight depending on when Jazz backers hit the Monday line. Some choke job!

*Dallas is seen as a hard-charging team making a run even though they were just crushed at home by Brooklyn and Indiana, and needed a heroic last second shot from Dirk Nowitzki to survive a home game with Chicago. They are playing better than they had been. But, Western Conference playoff caliber teams don’t get spanked at home by Brooklyn and Indiana.

On a night with so many side-by-side stories breaking in basketball…the biggest drama involved the incredible turnarounds that could loom very large in the 2013 Los Angeles Lakers Saga.

*Utah, currently #8 in the Western Conference standings, led Cleveland (20-40 and playing out the string) by a score of 76-68 entering the fourth quarter.

*Utah lost the fourth quarter 36-25 to a team with nothing to play for, and dropped their fifth game in the last six outings to further tighten the choke collar that’s been around their neck.

*The LA Lakers, starting an hour later than Utah, fell way behind New Orleans on night two of a back-to-back. They spent much of their evening figuring they were going to take a hit in the standings. Entering the fourth quarter, the Lakers trailed New Orleans 93-75.

*Buoyed by the great news from Cleveland, the Lakers won the fourth quarter 33-9…that’s THIRTY-THREE to NINE on the road on night two of a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Bullseye Officially Moves to Utah's Back, Bucks Desperate to Rise in East

Normally, a Utah Jazz/Milwaukee Bucks matchup wouldn’t be the showcase game of the night in the NBA. But, that was definitely the case this evening because both teams had a lot at stake…and then we went overtime!

*Utah knew that a loss would drop them into eighth place in the West, just two games ahead of the surging Los Angeles Lakers. They thought they were relatively safe a couple of weeks ago. But, home losses as favorites to Boston and Atlanta were service breaks that came at the worst possible time.

*Milwaukee is #8 in the East, and safely in the brackets because everyone from 9-15 is so far back that it would take a few miracles to unseat the Bucks. But, as you know, #8 is a HORRIBLE place to be in the Miami Heat’s conference. Milwaukee has a chance to catch Boston…and possibly Brooklyn.

Both teams wanted this one bad…and played like it. Let’s review the numbers…

NBA Betting Recap: Tired Lakers Outscored 33-3 on Fast Breaks

This is why back-to-backs in Denver are worth more than one point in the line! The Los Angeles Lakers were truly behind the eight-ball Monday night, trying to hang with rested Denver at altitude one day after winning a nailbiter in Dallas.

Let’s run the numbers then talk some more about the Lakers…

Denver 119, LA Lakers 108

2-Point Percentage: Lakers 61%, Denver 63%

3-Point Shooting: Lakers 8/19, Denver 5/18

Free Throws: Lakers 14/31, Denver 16/27

1’s and 2’s: Lakers 84, Denver 104

Rebounds: Lakers 36, Denver 44

Turnovers: Lakers 15, Denver 8

The Lakers did shoot well inside the arc because Denver was inviting a fast pace. They didn’t mind trading baskets if it meant the Lakers were going to run out of gas. You see “out of gas” flashing all over that boxscore:

*Just 14 of 31 on free throws for the Lakers…which was 9 of 11 from Kobe Bryant Read more
