College Basketball Betting Free Play: Valparaiso Crusaders at Youngstown Penguins

Valparaiso at Youngstown State -4
Recommendation: Youngstown State

Very good matchup in the Horizon League tonight between a pair of teams that sport identical 3-2 conference records. I am going to side with the home team as the Penguins have surged to a 3-0 SU, 2-0-1 ATS mark in their last three games notching wins against UIC, Cleveland State and Detroit. Youngstown State is playing at its best right now but you could argue that Valparaiso is too as they enter off back-to-back wins against Detroit and Milwaukee. This however will be the Crusaders’ toughest foe of that group.

The key to success against Valpo is being able to score because the Crusaders have been a potent offensive club for years. Youngstown State has certainly the ability to put the ball in the basket. The Penguins have connected at a blistering 47.9% shooting from the floor in their last five games. Kendrick Perry who leads the Horizon League in scoring at 21.2 ppg has carried the mail for Youngstown State. The Penguins feature four players in their starting rotation that average double digits and D.J. Cole isn’t far behind at 8.5 ppg. Youngstown State is by Read more

Valparaiso -6 at Loyola Chicago
Recommendation: Valparaiso

Loyola has been an overvalued commodity for much of the season at home. Prior to Saturday's win over rival UIC, the Ramblers failed to cover six straight at the Gentile Center. Tonight they play host to an opponent in Valparaiso that is eager for a big win. To start, the Crusaders are looking for payback after losing on their home court to the Ramblers back in early January. Second, after blowing Saturday's game against Detroit, Valpo's lead in the conference standings is only a half game. But the real key to this game is the health of Loyola’s Cully Payne and Ben Averkamp. Loyola managed a "hump up effort" without the duo against weaker UIC. Tonight against a far better opponent, their absence could be magnified. In the first meeting, Payne and Averkamp combined for 30 points and 12 assists. As of this morning, Payne (thumb) is doubtful and Averkamp (concussion) is questionable. Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Long trips and a short turnaround for Valpo

Valparaiso at Wright State pk

Big matchup in the Horizon League tonight as Valparaiso (9-2) heads to Wright State (8-4). Valpo didn't get home from its trip to Cleveland State until late Saturday night and left via bus for Dayton on Monday morning.

“We got guys with some injuries that were on the bus for 10 hours two days ago and then almost four and a half hours today,” Drew said. “That’s almost 15 hours. I think travel catches up with you at some point. When that point is, you never know."

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Butler needs win for Horizon Tourney No. 2 seed

Butler -1.5 at Valparaiso O/U 127

Crucial game for Butler tonight as a win over Valpo would earn the Bulldogs the much coveted No. 2 seed for the Horizon League Tournament. The Crusaders have already locked up the regular season crown and No. 1. seed. Basketball Prospectus talks about the legitimacy of Butler's current late season run.

Probably not. At the risk of being tautological, the thing I liked about last year’s late-season surge was that last year’s team was better. Last year’s team had Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack. Last year’s team outscored the Horizon by a very respectable 0.09 points per trip.

This year’s team, conversely, will end the year outscoring a slightly weaker Horizon League by Read more

With the conference tournament set to begin next Tuesday, February 28, tonight’s Horizon League games are extremely important for seedings. There is a mad scramble for the No. 2 through No. 6 seeds that likely won’t be fully settled tonight. The coveted No. 2 slot means a direct ticket right into the tourney semifinals and No. 3 through No. 6 guarantee first round home floor and with a win, a second round home game as well. There’s a lot of incentive to win for eight of the league’s ten teams so here’s a game-by-game look at what’s at stake tonight. I give an opinion on the games where I feel there may be a slight edge.

Detroit @ Cleveland State – Just two weeks ago, the Vikings were on a five game winning streak and in the driver’s seat for the conference tournament’s No. 1 seed. Their unexpected 59-41 home loss to Valparaiso that night started a horrendous five-game losing streak (both SU and ATS) that has them clinging to hopes of the No. 2 seed. To make that happen, CSU must win against Detroit and Saturday against Wright State, and have Valparaiso win Friday at home against Read more

Bracket Buster Betting Preview: Valpo travels to Loyola Marymount

Valparaiso at Loyola Marymount -6 O/U 136.5

Bracket Buster action tips off tonight with Valpo traveling west to face Loyola Marymount. This is one of many potentially tricky late season non-conference game handicaps. For first place Valpo (12-4), the focus is clearly on winning the Horizon League regular season title which has a ton of importance with the top two teams receiving a bye and the top remaining seed hosting the title game. LMU may not be completely focused either which has been an issue for this team at times. The Lions are off a monumental road win at St. Mary's and have to very winnable league games left with San Diego and Santa Clara at home. They've already clinched a bye to the quarterfinals of the WCC Tournament.

Missouri Valley Conference Betting News and Notes 1-15-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some news and notes on today's Missouri Valley matchups. Note that teams are playing their third conference game over the span of the last week.

Valparaiso is putting a lot of emphasis on today's home game against Cleveland State.

"It's important in the sense that Cleveland State is ahead of us in the standings and we don't want to fall too far behind them," Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew said. "We really do look at every conference game as an important game and we want to perform well in all of them, regardless of the opponent."

Evansville is banged up and in desperate need of a win after dropping four straight.

"We are going to see where we are at," said Harris. "We've lost four games in a row, so we need a win. We've got to go out there and compete with everything we've got. We know Missouri State is going Read more

College Basketball Gambling Notes: Taking a look at the money earners

On Sunday, I discussed some of college basketball’s early season “money burners”. Let’s take a look at those who are cashing tickets at a high rate and see whether or not the good fortune will last.

Saint Louis (5-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/29 at Loyola Marymount) - The Bilikens took their lumps last season with a youthful roster and various suspensions/injuries. The results thus far are real with convincing wins over Washington, Villanova and Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see whether or not they can maintain their intensity and handle the hype – especially with an easy December and inflated numbers – prior to A-10 play. Check out this slate of opponents: Loyola Marymount, Portland, Vermont, Illinois-Springfield, Alabama State, Arkansas State and Texas Southern. That should be seven wins before traveling to New Mexico on December 31.

Duquesne (4-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/30 vs. Pittsburgh) - The Dukes have shown no signs of missing Read more

We’re off to a sizzling 8-2 start in college basketball following Valparaiso’s 84-68 demolishing of Duquesne Sunday. The Crusaders were a 3-point home underdog as the host of the 2k Classic and money came in strong on Valpo prior to tip off. Strong support was also in favor of our top play Saturday as Long Beach State (+3) had an adjusted power rating line of at least three points following their big upset of Pittsburgh November 16th (a Big Drive winner for us). But we could have use an extra few points Saturday as we suffered a very tough loss when Long Beach State lost to San Diego State 71-67 in overtime. If you missed the final seconds of regulation and overtime, Long Beach was trailing by two points with three seconds remaining in regulation. The 49ers had the ball after a timeout planning their final possession and shot. Long Beach State planned a 3-point shot off a screen for premier point guard Casper Ware. But a San Diego State player committed an ill-advised foul on the screen as the ball was being put into play. Ware calmly made both free throws under pressure to send the game into overtime. Long Beach was already penalized by the officials when their top Read more

Horizon League Tournament Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Horizon League Tournament is considered by some to be innovative in that it is entirely geared for the top two teams to meet in the finals (double bye). In 2002, Butler went 25-5 and had the nation's most road wins (15). They were the class of the league but UIC won the conference tournament as a sixth-seed at neutral site Cleveland. That prompted the league to move the semifinals and finals to the regular season champ, who this year is UW-Milwaukee. Since the switch, the Horizon League has seen a No. 1 vs. No. 2 finals matchup in six of eight years. The other two matchups were No. 1 vs. No. 3. Rested and ready, teams afforded a bye have a distinct advantage. Note that the second round and semifinals are at UW-Milwaukee. The finals are at the highest remaining seed should UWM not advance.

This year's host UW-Milwaukee was considered just another average outfit to start the year – and after a 4-5 start to league play. But the Panthers ripped off nine straight league wins (8-1 ATS) and won the title with an Read more
