Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers takes a look at 28 NCAA Tournament matchups

03.18.2013     10:19 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the madness that is March now in full swing, it’s time to take a look through the brackets.  Today, I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday.  Games are listed in rotation order.

Missouri spent the entire season losing close games on the road, falling in OT at UCLA and Kentucky, while dropping games by three points or less at Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M, LSU and to Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament.  Larry Eustachy got the most he could out of Colorado State’s talent level this year, but the Rams, too, lost nearly every step-up game on the highway.

As a No. 3 seed, Marquette is only a 3.5-point favorite over No. 14 seed Davidson.  The betting markets clearly respect the Wildcats five upperclassmen starters that started 30 of their 33 previous games together this season.

Butler has won at least the first two games of every single postseason tournament they’ve played since 2010, including runs in the Horizon League and A-10 conference tourney’s, two runs to the championship Read more

College Basketball Betting: Rutgers adjusts to life without leading scorer Carter

02.18.2013     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers at Villanova -10 O/U 130.5

Rutgers' leading scorer Eli Carter will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg in Saturday's loss to DePaul. Head coach Mike Rice said that the team may go with a bigger lineup moving forward. For the last two seasons, Carter was the focal point of the offense – albeit an inefficient one. Carter shot just 38% from the floor and 32% from three. He also led the team in turnovers at nearly three per game. Part of that was out of necessity but his departure could open the door for more looks from Myles Mack (13.2 ppg, 50% FGs) and Wally Judge (7.1 ppg, 52% FGs) and others.

“We’ll tweak some things,” Rice said. “If you give Myles and Jerome those Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Arizona, Wyoming no longer perfect, Duke and Michigan remain

01.11.2013     02:19 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two teams back in action this weekend after losing their first games of the season. Wyoming, who while good was on borrowed time after playing a fairly soft schedule, lost at home to Boise State, 63-61. The Cowboys go on the road to face Nevada on Saturday. Arizona's streak ended last night in Eugene as Oregon held on for a 70-66 victory. The Wildcats have a day to record and then visit Oregon State. Duke (15-0, at NC State) and Michigan (16-0, at Ohio State) remain the only two unbeatens.

Out of curiosity, we went back the last two years and looked how teams with extended perfect records fared after being issued their first loss of the season.

It is a small sample but there doesn't look to be a significant hangover effect. The best example was two years ago when Syracuse was 18-0 and lost to Pittsburgh. The next time out against Villanova in the Carrier Dome, the Orange trailed 40-29 at half and lost by the same margin as 5.5-point home favorites.

Missouri 14-0, Loss at Kansas State, Next game won at covered at Iowa State.

NCAA Tournament Gambling: A handicapper's look at the Sweet Sixteen

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first weekend of the Madness is in the history books and only 16 teams remain standing in the NCAA Tournament. Let’s take a look at those 16 teams and assess their chances for tournament success as the field gets reduced to the Final Four this coming weekend. Teams are listed in rotation order.

Wisconsin is a mirror image of their head coach Bo Ryan: tough as nails. There’s no questioning the Badgers execution or heart, but this is not one of the more talented teams that Ryan has coached during his tenure in Madison. The Badgers are an offensively challenged ballclub that relies heavily on their three-point shooting. Four of their top five scorers average at least one made three pointer per game. Their leading rebounder, Ryan Evans, is 6-6, 210; not a team with a dominant inside presence. We’ve seen the Badgers end up on the wrong side of nearly every “step up in class” game away from home this year, with two exceptions: their win at Ohio State and their win over Vandy to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Fab Melo’s academic ineligibility wasn’t a major factor for Syracuse in either of its Read more

Big East Tournament Free Pick: Villanova Wildcats vs. South Florida Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Villanova vs. South Florida -2.5 O/U 120
Recommendation: South Florida

Don’t be fooled by Villanova’s win over Rutgers, their season is going to end today.  Prior to that victory, the Wildcats were on a 2-8 SU and 1-7-1 ATS slide. South Florida (19-12, 12-6 Big East) dominated Villanova this season with their signature defense resulting in a pair of 65-51 and 74-57 wins. South Florida’s last eight games to close the Big East season saw them hold opponents to 50, 51, 45, 56, 47, 51, 48, and 51 points. The Bulls went 6-2 ATS in those games led by the league’s no. 1 scoring defense (57 ppg) and field goal defense (38%), and now face a ‘Nova offense that tied for last in the league in field goal shooting (40%).  Villanova also takes plenty of long range shots, but USF holds Big East foes to just 28% shooting from the arch. Add in a rebounding advantage for the Bulls and this becomes a defensive dandy at a fair price Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Bettors support suspect UConn squad at Villanova

02.20.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly

Connecticut -3.5 at Villanova O/U 138

Since mid-January UConn has won two games: at home vs. Seton Hall and DePaul. Yet despite the weak resume, bettors are gung-ho in their support of the Huskies tonight at Villanova. Notre Dame, which is without question a better team than UConn, closed -3 at Villanova on Saturday and needed a 16-point second half rally and overtime to beat the Wildcats. Perhaps that disappointing result will be too much for 'Nova to overcome. Regardless, backing UConn at its current price has absolutely no value. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

NCAA Basketball Betting Alert: Villanova likely down two starters vs. Notre Dame

Notre Dame -2 at- Villanova- O/U 132.5

Villanova likely to be with two starters as Maalik Wayns (knee, 17.8 ppg) is listed as doubtful and James Bell (ankle, 7.5 ppg) is out.

"Obviously we would miss both of those guys but this is an opportunity for some of our younger guys to contribute and gain experience," stated Wright.

College Basketball Free Play: Villanova Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals

Villanova +9.5 at Louisville O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Villanova

Since losing at home to South Florida on January 5th, Villanova seems to have made some major improvements. The young team is picking up on what it takes to play in the Big East, and their talent is emerging. As a result, they are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS since that loss, and faced three of the top teams in the league during that stretch. Maalik Wayns has become a star at the point and freshman Jayvaughn Pinkston is rapidly improving on the block. They are a team that could be a money maker down the stretch, and judging by tonight’s line, no one has caught on to their improvements. Louisville is off a win at Pitt in which Kyle Kuric returned to lead them on the offense, but this is still a flawed team. They are 15-5 on the season, but just 3-5 in their last eight games since the schedule got tougher. Underdog has some value here.

Big East Tournament First Round Betting News and Notes

03.08.2011     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some last minute betting news and notes for today’s opening round of the Big East Tournament.

Villanova guard Corey Stokes is questionable. Head coach Jay Wright talked about how the Wildcats played slower without Stokes in the lineup. Nova’s hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire offensively of late: 54, 60, 77 (OT), 64, 68 and 50 their last six games.

The Wildcats slowed it down without Stokes against Pitt, not beginning their plays until late in the shot clock. Wright feels that having played the most recent game without Stokes, his Wildcats know what their jobs are.

"We've talked about it," he said. " 'This is what we're going to do if we don't have Stokes, this is what we're going to do if we do have Stokes.' That's what the positive was coming out of the Pitt game. It wasn't good enough to beat Pitt, but everybody knows how they're going to play, where Read more
