Villanova vs. North Carolina -2 O/U 149.5

Coming off of pointspread covering performances in their Final Four matchups, these teams left no doubt they’ve been the best in the tournament field. Combined they are 9-1 against the spread thus far (Villanova 5-0, North Carolina 4-1) with nine double-digit victories. They are 7-3 over the total (Villanova 3-2, North Carlina 4-1) with six of those seven exceeding tonight’s current number of 149.5. Tonight’s championship game has numerous intriguing fundamental matchups which appear far more significant than the situationals or technicals in determining which tickets get cashed.

It’s no secret that UNC has a distinct interior edge in this one with ultra-athletic 6’10” Brice Johnson (team’s leading scorer, rebounder, FG%, FT% and shot blocker) 6’10” 260 pound Kennedy Meeks, 6’9” 235 Isaiah Hicks, 6’8” Justin Jackson and 6’11” 280 lb. Joel James. These five players form a group that features every asset imaginable from speed to inside force and figure to be difficult for Villanova which only has two post players that Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How to beat your NCAA Tournament office pool

I could go off on the NCAA Tournament committee for screwing the mid-majors again, something that’s becoming an annual tradition.  But complaining about the committee is akin to complaining about the weather – everybody does it, but it doesn’t help one iota.  Instead, in this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’m going to focus on the casual fan and strategies for winning office pool bracket contests.

It’s bracket time, the annual intrusion every March of the general public into our college basketball sportsbetting world.  And when it comes to filling out brackets, there aren’t many bigger experts than Ed Feng from, who I had the chance to interview last week.

Feng is an interesting guy, earning his PhD from Stanford – he’s no dummy.  He’s written for Grantland , Deadspin and Bleacher Report, just to name a few of the sites he’s been affiliated with.  Last year, advanced analytics website conducted a study that found Feng’s predictions for the 2015 NCAA Tournament to be the most accurate among their forecasts, culminating in Duke’s Read more

Villanova -1.5 at Xavier O/U 145
Recommendation: Villanova

The most important Big East game of the season tips tonight in Cincinnati as Villanova will be defending its No. 1 ranking on the road vs No. 5 ranked Xavier with first place on the line for both teams.  Xavier has played well of late winning eight of nine games and the Musketeers will be looking to avenge their first loss of the season to the Wildcats, a 31-point blowout. Villanova has been Xavier’s kryptonite. In the past three years spanning six games, the Musketeers are 0-6, losing by an average of 17 ppg a game. The Wildcats destroyed the Musketeers in December as Ryan Arcidiacono went for 27 points including 50% from behind the line.

The Wildcats are No. 1 thanks to 16 wins in the past 17 games after an 8-2 start to the year. Josh Hart has been a huge part of that success, averaging a team-high 15.0 points to go along with 7.6 rebounds per game. Daniel Ochefu has been rock-solid since coming back from injury, averaging 14.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks in the past four games.

Xavier has played well at home, not losing since a 9-point Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Seton Hall Pirates at Villanova Wildcats

Seton Hall at Villanova
Recommendation: Over 66 1st half

Villanova's offense looked like a well oiled machine in Big East wins over Xavier and Creighton. The Wildcats hit a combined 51-of-64 from two and 19-of-43 from three. They can score from all over the court and have an endless array of offensive weapons. Seton Hall has been serviceable on the offensive end with 83 and 78 point efforts in wins over Marquette and DePaul. Both games also featured a fair amount of pace with 80 and 72 possessions respectively. What I don't buy is any of Seton Hall's defensive numbers as multiple metrics indicate the schedule has been extremely favorable in terms of its opponent's offensive potency. In fact, six of their foes are currently averaging less than a point per possession. The Pirates allowed 1.09 ppp in Big East play last season which means we can put little stock into their current output of 0.94 (32nd nationally). Tonight serves as a massive step up in class considering Villanova ranks sixth in offensive efficiency despite struggling from beyond the arc to start the season. You do have to be concerned about Villanova's ability on the defensive end which Read more

Xavier vs. Arizona -10.5 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Arizona

My power ratings show Arizona right there with Duke as the second best team in the country.  The Wildcats are playing in a friendly, familiar venue in LA; certain to enjoy significant crowd support compared to Xavier in this game, to go along with their short travel time.  Their coach, Sean Miller, is arguably the best coach in college basketball never to reach the Final Four.  This team is a juggernaut, plain and simple, and the PAC 12’s 7-1 ATS mark over the opening weekend of the Big Dance speaks volumes about how undervalued this conference is on the national stage.

Xavier is no juggernaut.  The Big East really wasn’t very good this year – it was Villanova and then everybody else.  The Musketeers are tough and well coached, but they finished sixth in this mediocre conference with a 9-9 record in Big East play.  They are here only because of the ‘luck of the draw’; facing an Ole Miss team off extensive travel on short rest in the first round, followed by upstart #14 seed Georgia State in the Round of 32.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Sweet Sixteen Betting Preview

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
The insanity that is March Madness just provided bettors and fans alike with one of the more memorable opening weekends of NCAA Tournament action.  Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to take a look at the 16 teams still standing in the Big Dance from a pointspread perspective.  Which squads offer some semblance of betting value moving forward and which do not?  Read on to find out.

Two conferences stood out above the rest this past weekend.  The ACC sent a whopping five teams to the Sweet 16 out of six Big Dance entrants while going 11-1 SU.  But bettors didn’t make a dime supporting those ACC teams, who combined to go 5-7 ATS.  Duke was the lone ACC squad to notch a pair of pointspread covers.  Notre Dame was one of two teams (Kentucky being the other) to go 2-0 SU but 0-2 ATS.

The PAC-12, on the other hand, produced both SU and ATS success for bettors this past weekend.  The four PAC-12 entrants combined to go 7-1 SU, sending three teams to the Sweet 16.  Even more impressively, the conference combined to go 7-1 ATS; the lone non-cover coming in Arizona’s 21 point opening round win as 23 point Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Who has what it takes to win the Big Dance Part II

In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a short list of potential champs in 2015, consisting of the following 12 teams:  Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, Kansas, Baylor, Villanova, Wisconsin, Maryland, Arizona, Utah and Kentucky.

However, since that article was written last week, one of those 12 teams has been bounced from consideration, with Baylor suffering their eighth loss of the season at Texas in overtime.  I don’t think the Bears were serious contenders to win the title, but now that they are above the seven loss cut-off line, we can eliminate Scott Drew’s squad from the discussion entirely.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home.

The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a favorable location one weekend, a team is still going to have to win Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Seton Hall tries to weather storm

02.16.2015     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Things have gotten -- and still may be -- messy for Seton Hall after a player quit and rumors surfaced about a troubled locker room. The Pirates were 15-6, 5-4 but have dropped four straight and play the second of three straight road games at Villanova this evening. Head coach Kevin Willard commended his team for their effort in a spread covering 69-62 loss at Providence on Saturday.

"It's tough coming on the road after having to deal with a lot of B.S. over the last week," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said after the loss. "We came on the road to a packed house and I thought we did a good job of battling. (I'm) really proud of this team."
