Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: An early look at the Field of 68

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’ve got brackets to break down! I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday. Games are listed in rotation order.

The A-10 got a handful of mediocre teams like Dayton into the NCAA Tournament mix, but the Flyers will certainly be looking forward to a matchup against an Ohio State team that has repeatedly avoided them in non-conference play. The Buckeyes enter the tourney on an 0-6 ATS run; just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 tries as chalk.

Syracuse, too, was a pointspread disaster area down the stretch, cashing only one winning bet in their last eight ballgames. But Western Michigan’s only win against an NCAA Tournament team came on the opening night of the season, back on November 8th, when they beat New Mexico State.

Phil Martelli’s Saint Joseph’s team hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2004, when Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were his starting guards. UConn is a Top 10 team for free throw shooting percentage; always key in this ‘short favorite’ pointspread Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part 1 of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a ‘short list’ of potential champs in 2014, consisting of the following 18 teams: Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa State, Creighton, Villanova, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Kentucky.

However, since last week, two of those 18 teams have been bounced from consideration, including one of the co- favorites at any sportsbook in Vegas – John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.  Kentucky lost two straight last week; Iowa has lost three of their last four.  Both teams are now above the seven loss cut-off line and can be eliminated.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home.
The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Villanova Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays

Villanova at Creighton -2.5 O/U 147
Recommendation: Creighton

Creighton has failed to cover the number in four consecutive games because it has been overpriced. However, in today's home game vs. Villanova, the price is right for a play on the Bluejays, who are 2.5-point home favorites vs. the Wildcats. Greg McDermott's team is undefeated in 13 home games this season with a 7-4 spread record. Creighton has been a single-digit home 'chalk' three times, posting a 2-1 ATS mark. When these teams met in Philadelphia on Jan. 20, it was all Creighton from the jump. The Bluejays put on a show, setting school and Big East records by draining 21-of-35 attempts from 3-point range. They led by 40 – that's right, 40! – with more than six minutes remaining. Ethan Wragge scored a career-high 27 points thanks to nine treys on 14 attempts. With eight 3-balls in the first 16 minutes and change, Wragge surpassed his previous career high of 22 points before halftime. Doug McDermott was steady as usual, producing 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Austin Chatman dished out 10 assists, while Jahenns Manigat finished with 19 points. Now obviously, I'm Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror after Sunday’s huge Seattle blowout, which can only mean one thing – college hoops is on center stage for the next eight weeks. I’ve been writing game previews for ESPN.com/Insider, but I’ve yet to write a true college basketball overview column so far this season. It’s time!

I’m going take a look at the four very best regular board pointspread teams in the country in this week’s column.  Elite level teams aren’t necessarily pointspread winners, and bottom feeders can cash ticket after ticket if the betting markets set numbers that allow them to hang within the number as big underdogs. And the very best pointspread teams tend to be under-the-radar type squads, like the single best ATS team in college hoops thusfar in the 2013-14 campaign.

Cleveland State has a decent record, sitting in a second place tie in the Horizon League standings with a 6-3 mark in conference; 15-9 SU overall. If the NCAA tournament started today, Gary Waters’ Vikings wouldn’t even sniff an at-large bid – they’ll need to win the league tournament to go Read more

The incredible streak of Cincinnati unders came to a screeching halt in Sunday's 80-76 win at Temple. The 156 combined went 'over the 133.5-point total with nearly four minutes to spare. The under is now 13-2 for the Bearcats this season and 26-4 in their last 30 games. As I've stated many times, these low-scoring games for Cincy are largely based upon the defensive presence provided by Justin Jackson, who protects the rim and cleans the glass. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half and did not return.

Nevertheless, the pace for another under looked decent at halftime when Cincy had a 36-26 advantage (1st half total was 62/62.5). But Temple's Dalton Pepper caught fire in the second half, burying seven 3's and scoring 27 of his 33 points. Cincy led by 19 early in the second half, but a triple by Pepper evened the game up with 25 seconds remaining. Mick Cronin's team pulled it out, though, and Sean Kilpatrick finished with 29 points. Jackson's status for Thursday's crucial AAC showdown at Louisville is very iffy. He wasn't able to play in a loss at the Yum! Center last year, either. Before Temple struck for 76 on the Jackson-less Bearcats, they had not given up Read more

After missing back-to-back games due to swelling and soreness in his knee, Florida forward Casey Prather has been cleared to play Saturday at Auburn. However, UF head coach Billy Donovan told the media Friday morning that it's unlikely that Prather will play many minutes. The senior slasher is enjoying a breakout campaign, averaging a team-high 17.0 points per game. The status of freshman big man Chris Walker remains unresolved. Walker, a McDonald's All-American from Holmes Co. High School, has been practicing with the team for a month but is still awaiting word on his eligibility from the NCAA Clearinghouse. ESPN's Chad Ford currently has Walker as the No. 22 pick in his mock for this summer's NBA Draft.

Colorado took a huge hit in Sunday's 71-54 loss at Washington when Spencer Dinwiddie was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Dinwiddie was averaging 14.7 points, 3.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Without Dinwiddie last night, CU lost a 69-56 decision to UCLA as a one-point home favorite.

Boston College was hoping to get center Dennis Clifford back soon, but that's not happening. The school announced that Clifford is out for the rest of the Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers takes a look at 28 NCAA Tournament matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the madness that is March now in full swing, it’s time to take a look through the brackets.  Today, I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday.  Games are listed in rotation order.

Missouri spent the entire season losing close games on the road, falling in OT at UCLA and Kentucky, while dropping games by three points or less at Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas A&M, LSU and to Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament.  Larry Eustachy got the most he could out of Colorado State’s talent level this year, but the Rams, too, lost nearly every step-up game on the highway.

As a No. 3 seed, Marquette is only a 3.5-point favorite over No. 14 seed Davidson.  The betting markets clearly respect the Wildcats five upperclassmen starters that started 30 of their 33 previous games together this season.

Butler has won at least the first two games of every single postseason tournament they’ve played since 2010, including runs in the Horizon League and A-10 conference tourney’s, two runs to the championship Read more

College Basketball Betting: Rutgers adjusts to life without leading scorer Carter

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers at Villanova -10 O/U 130.5

Rutgers' leading scorer Eli Carter will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg in Saturday's loss to DePaul. Head coach Mike Rice said that the team may go with a bigger lineup moving forward. For the last two seasons, Carter was the focal point of the offense – albeit an inefficient one. Carter shot just 38% from the floor and 32% from three. He also led the team in turnovers at nearly three per game. Part of that was out of necessity but his departure could open the door for more looks from Myles Mack (13.2 ppg, 50% FGs) and Wally Judge (7.1 ppg, 52% FGs) and others.

“We’ll tweak some things,” Rice said. “If you give Myles and Jerome those Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Arizona, Wyoming no longer perfect, Duke and Michigan remain

01.11.2013     02:19 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two teams back in action this weekend after losing their first games of the season. Wyoming, who while good was on borrowed time after playing a fairly soft schedule, lost at home to Boise State, 63-61. The Cowboys go on the road to face Nevada on Saturday. Arizona's streak ended last night in Eugene as Oregon held on for a 70-66 victory. The Wildcats have a day to record and then visit Oregon State. Duke (15-0, at NC State) and Michigan (16-0, at Ohio State) remain the only two unbeatens.

Out of curiosity, we went back the last two years and looked how teams with extended perfect records fared after being issued their first loss of the season.

It is a small sample but there doesn't look to be a significant hangover effect. The best example was two years ago when Syracuse was 18-0 and lost to Pittsburgh. The next time out against Villanova in the Carrier Dome, the Orange trailed 40-29 at half and lost by the same margin as 5.5-point home favorites.

2011-12

Missouri 14-0, Loss at Kansas State, Next game won at covered at Iowa State.

Baylor 17-0, Loss at Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling: A handicapper's look at the Sweet Sixteen

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first weekend of the Madness is in the history books and only 16 teams remain standing in the NCAA Tournament. Let’s take a look at those 16 teams and assess their chances for tournament success as the field gets reduced to the Final Four this coming weekend. Teams are listed in rotation order.

Wisconsin is a mirror image of their head coach Bo Ryan: tough as nails. There’s no questioning the Badgers execution or heart, but this is not one of the more talented teams that Ryan has coached during his tenure in Madison. The Badgers are an offensively challenged ballclub that relies heavily on their three-point shooting. Four of their top five scorers average at least one made three pointer per game. Their leading rebounder, Ryan Evans, is 6-6, 210; not a team with a dominant inside presence. We’ve seen the Badgers end up on the wrong side of nearly every “step up in class” game away from home this year, with two exceptions: their win at Ohio State and their win over Vandy to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Fab Melo’s academic ineligibility wasn’t a major factor for Syracuse in either of its Read more
