College Football Betting Preview: Miami Hurricanes at Pittsburgh Panthers

Miami at Pittsburgh
Friday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener: Miami -13.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: Miami -11.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

Miami has risen up to #2 in the latest college football playoff rankings, yet the Canes are primed to be tested at Pitt in early start action on Friday. Mark Richt’s squad is coming off three huge, marquee victories all at home. In statement games against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, Miami dominated, controlling the flow throughout. Last week, against Virginia, Miami roared back from an early deficit with a furious fourth quarter rally.

A road trip to Pittsburgh in late November is no easy task for this warm weather squad in a normal season. This year, given what Miami has already been through in recent weeks, it’s a MONSTER trouble spot, especially with the lookahead to the ACC title game against Clemson on deck. Quote after quote from the Miami locker room is concerning to me – lots of lookahead, lots of talk about what they don’t want to do (which often leads to the exact opposite Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas Tech at West Virginia
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: West Virginia -6 O/U 80
CRIS Current: West Virginia -3.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: Over

West Virginia's offense has had no trouble moving the football this season. Yes, they benefitted from a three-game swatch of East Carolina, Delaware State, and Kansas but they also faced Virginia Tech and TCU away from home. Against the Hokies, WVU rolled up 592 yards and topped the 500-yard mark against the Horned Frogs as well. The Mountaineers ran into some difficulty in the red zone which resulted in only 48 points combined in both contests but the yardage was actually conducive to around 75 points.

Through five games, Texas Tech's defense has actually been somewhat of a strength as it has allowed a modest 5.5 yards per play. But those numbers are buoyed by games against FCS Eastern Washington, Houston, and Kansas. Arizona State hung 45 on the Red Raiders and Oklahoma State just missed the 600-yard mark in its 41-34 win. West Virginia is also the most balanced team Tech has faced and the only squad to rank Read more

Virginia Tech at Boston College
Saturday, 4:15 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: Virginia Tech -17 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: Virginia Tech -16.5 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: Over

Immediate bounce back is necessary here for the visiting Hokies who were defeated 31-17 at home last week by ACC kingpin Clemson. This type of situation generally points squarely in favor of the defensive minded double-digit home underdog. Mechanical handicap in this one would be to fade Virginia Tech which is traveling and off of a high profile conference loss. Letdown angle can’t be ignored here since it’s difficult to envision VT playing this one with the same intensity they possessed in last week’s prime time home showdown versus Clemson. Factor in the carry over confidence that Boston College will enter with after playing to a 7-7 tie at Clemson just two weeks ago. The fourth quarter really got away from BC but despite that they still managed to cover as +33. Steve Addazio with definitely remind his team all week long that if they just finish this time they’ll have a shot at Read more

Clemson at Virginia Tech
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener: Clemson -5.5 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Clemson -7.5 O/U 51
Recommendation: Over

Third time in four weeks that Clemson will be tested by a top 25 team. Having already having disposed of Auburn and Louisville both in straight up and against the spread fashion, the Tigers enter having played a far more rugged schedule than Virginia Tech. The Hokies have piled up gaudy statistics the past three weeks (outscored opponents 72-0 in 2H) but Delaware (FCS), East Carolina and Old Dominion hardly make VT battle tested. Last week, Tech faced an ODU team led by a 17-year-old true-freshman QB making his first career start. The Monarchs also played without star RB Ray Lawry for the third straight week. Certainly Virginia Tech will be fired up and well prepared for this game but the question is are they ready for the major step up in class. Their season opener at neutral site FedEx Field against West Virginia saw the Hokies hang on by a thread to win 31-24.

The key fundamentals in this matchup are pretty obvious can Read more

College Football Betting News: East Carolina fires defensive coordinator

09.12.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last season, East Carolina opened with a 52-7 win over Western Carolina, followed that up with a 33-30 win over NC State, and then lost by only five at South Carolina. Since then, the Pirates have won only once (vs. UConn), with 10 losses coming by 23.5 ppg. Sensing he may be out of a job soon if things don't turn around, Scottie Montgomery did what any head coach would do in this situation: fire a coordinator. Defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson was let go after last week's 56-10 loss to West Virginia. And starting quarterback Thomas Sirk is questionable with concussion symptoms. Surprisingly, there's been a little support for ECU in the markets this week with Virginia Tech bet down from -22 to -20.5 road chalk.

“I know probably much will be made about East Carolina’s start,” Hokies coach Justin Fuente said Monday. “I can tell you they played two really, really quality opponents. I know there are not a lot of people in America running to their ADs

College Football Handicapping: Virginia Tech goes with redshirt frosh quarterback

08.15.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech has named redshirt freshman Josh Jackson its Week 1 starter. Under first-year head coach Justin Fuente, last year's starter, Jerod Evans, broke a handful of single-season school records as the Hokies finished 10-4. Tech is currently a -4.5/-5 favorite for its season opener against West Virginia. The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

"Day in and day out he's been more consistent in terms of the things that we've talked about, the three criteria we've talked about before this camp started, and what we are looking for. Taking care of the football, expected outcomes, and how we feel. And in those three categories we feel the best about Josh," Fuente said.

"His execution, his level of understanding the offense, his ability to get out there play after play, and do exactly what he's supposed to do and protecting the football. He showed us that that's really important to him and those factors combined altogether," added Hokies offensive coordinator Brad

Virginia Tech +5.5 vs. Wisconsin O/U 136
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Contrasting styles in this East Regional late tip-off which features teams who enter in very different form against the spread. For Virginia Tech the last 10 games have seen their supporters collect nine times. The only loss in the Hokies current 90% ticket cashing streak came on March 4 when they were -1.5 point favorites against Wake Forest in the second round of the ACC Tournament. VT is 7-1 ATS since losing third leading scorer Chris Clark. At the time, that injury to the Hokies most athletic player seemed devastating but they’ve gone 6-0 ATSas an underdog winning four of those straight up. A huge part of the success goes to their offense which posted a 57.1 effective FG% in ACC play which ranked #1 in the conference. Buzz Williams’ team was also #1 from 3-point range in league play shooting a stellar 41.4% led by Seth Allen (45.1%), Justin Bibbs (42.5%) and Ty Outlaw (48.2%. In all, five players have at least 107 3-point attempts and they all shoot 36.4% or better. That perimeter marksmanship will keep Wisconsin busy while they’ll Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Syracuse Orange at Virginia Tech Hokies

Syracuse at Virginia Tech -3 O/U 149
Recommendation: Under

Good spots for a solid defensive effort from Virginia Tech tonight as the Hokies coughed up 104 and 93 in recent road games to NC State and Florida State. It was a classic case of falling in love with offense after Tech averaged over 90 ppg its previous five including an 89-75 win over Duke. Syracuse meanwhile went through a similar swatch of poor defense having allowed 93 to St. John's and 96 to Boston College. The Orange slowed down the pace of the last two games (61 and 62 possessions) and held Miami and Pitt to 55 and 66 respectively in two comfortable wins. Inexperience at the point guard position and high possession games forced the Orange to tap into their lackluster bench. Jim Boeheim had obviously seen enough and has essentially gone with a five-man rotation. It's more evidence that we will continue to see Syracuse play a more controlled brand of basketball. The game got played down some earlier this morning but at 149 I think we can still look to play it under.

Texas A&M vs. Virginia Tech +2.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Texas A&M lost a ton of experience from last year's group that won 28 games and reached the Sweet Sixteen. It was one of the most "together" teams in the country last year with clearly defined roles throughout the roster. This year's group has talent and the one constant under head coach Billy Kennedy is defense so I'm not expecting 2016-17 to be a total rebuild job. But there are going to be bumps in the road and we saw it first hand in A&M's recent home loss to USC in which they coughed up a lead late and lost 65-63. Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams did a masterful job last season as he took an ultra-young roster and produced 20 wins and a 10-8 record in ACC play. He was forced to play a number of kids who weren't ready to compete at such a high level but much of that group is back. Now you have a coach who is noted for getting kids to buy in and play hard in his second season. The Hokies' talent was on full display yesterday as they hung 92 points in a blowout win over New Mexico. It's a pretty big step up in class tonight as the Aggies will mark Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies at Duke Blue Devils

Virginia Tech at Duke
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Virginia Tech -12 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Virginia Tech -10.5 O/U 54
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Not at all confident that there’s much left in the Duke tank physically or mentally as they head into this game. Last week’s all-out effort in 38-35 loss at Georgia Tech was a brutal and a potentially finalizing blow to the Blue Devils who rallied from a 28-7 halftime deficit to take a 35-31 fourth quarter lead only to lose following a late Yellow Jacket touchdown. Furthering the frustration was the demoralizing loss of top back Jela Duncan whose season-ending leg injury was described by David Cutcliffe as “gut wrenching." Not real sure Duke can get up off the mat here despite the fact that it is a home game and one where a win is much needed since at 3-5, they must have victories in three of their final four games to become bowl eligible.

The other sideline is a bit rosier as Virginia Tech is in high gear right now after Read more
