College Basketball Betting: Wake Forest tries to get over the hump on the road

01.22.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest at Virginia Tech -1.5

Wake Forest enters tonight's game at Virginia Tech on a 17-game game ACC road losing streak dating back to 2012. Part of the problem – outside of the Demon Deacons not being very good for much of that span – is inexperience. Last year they had one of the youngest teams in the country and this year's group, while much improved, still features a lot of underclassmen.  Wake dropped its first three road conference games by margins of 23, 15, and 8 though the competition was significantly stronger than tonight's foe, Virginia Tech which has already suffered home losses to South Carolina-Upstate, UNC Greensboro, and Boston College.

"At home, we have extra energy and extra concentration and we feed off the great energy from our fans, and we're in every possession," Bzdelik said. "Whereas on the road, we seem to lose sight of how valuable each and every possession is. One play, a couple plays, can change the course of a basketball game. We just need to focus on every, every single Read more

College Football Handicapping: Week 11 Injury Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Stanford won’t have DE Ben Gardner for the rest of the season, but at least it is getting another 2012 All-Pac-12 selection back in the lineup. DE Henry Anderson is ‘probable’ vs. Oregon after missing several games with a leg injury.

Troy uses a two-QB system with Deon Anthony used in running situations. Anthony has rushed for 392 yards and three TDs while averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Anthony, who also has three TD passes without an interception, is ‘doubtful’ Thursday at UL-Lafayette after spraining his ankle in a 49-37 loss to ULM last week. Corey Robinson (18-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio) will get all the snaps for the Trojans.

Wisconsin WR Jared Abbrederis has been upgraded to ‘probable’ vs. BYU after sustaining a chest injury on a touchdown catch in Saturday’s 28-9 win at Iowa. The Badgers will also get back two-time All Big Ten linebacker Chris Borland, who has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.

Iowa QB Jake Rudock left the Wisconsin loss in the second half with a knee injury, but he’s good to go and will start at Purdue. Rudock has a 12-9 TD-INT ratio.

College Football Betting: Will Wake Forest's under the total trend continue?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For many teams across the nation, 25% of their season is already complete. Three weeks ago as fall practice sessions ended and teams began preparing for their season opening games, those of us who follow college football routinely had opinions set on all 126 FBS teams. Since teams only play 12 regular season games, the quarter pole has always been a time to proactively adjust to teams if need be or stay firm with initial judgments that were made. In this week’s article I’ll take a look at one team specifically from a totals perspective which has thus far performed differently than what the original outlook may have been.

It’s not that Wake Forest's schemes have turned into something we don’t associate with them. After all, this team has had the exact same on-field style for each of head coach Jim Grobe’s 12 seasons here. The difference right now is the extent to which their game scores have diminished. Through their first three games, Wake Forest totals have opened and closed as some of the lowest we’ve seen each week. To see closing totals of 51, 47.5 and 50 in this day and age can definitely be categorized as lower than average. Read more

College Football Handicapping: What to do with bad football teams?

09.17.2013     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're through Week 3 of the college football season and for a few teams it's been a struggle. Some of those struggles oddsmakers and bettors spotted well in advance while others weren't as obvious. Let's take a look at some of these teams and decide whether or not they have "bet on" potential moving forward.

Wake Forest (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) - For years the Demon Deacons fielded a competitive team with pointspread value under long-time head coach Jim Grobe. But the program has unquestionably deteriorated with records of 5-7, 3-9, 6-7, and 5-7 the last four years. Even with solid turnover margins of +8 and +9 – a staple under Grobe –the last two seasons, Wake looks outmanned and slow compared to the rest of the ACC. They're off to a 1-2 start and once again can't run the football (86.3 ypg) or find consistency in the passing game with senior Tanner Price. This is likely a do-or-die season Grobe and I don't see many more chances for straight up wins on the schedule. This week's price of -3 at Army tells us all we need to know about Wake's place in the betting markets.

Florida International (0-3 SU/ATS) - Pretty Read more

College Football Betting: Wake Forest in better shape after bye week

10.19.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest at Virginia -3.5 O/U 52.5

After a host of suspensions and injuries, Wake Forest appears close to full strength after the bye week. Note however that the offensive line still has questions with two original starters out for the season.

"I think the open date's been good for us,'' Grobe said. "We would have had a bunch of guys not play (last) Saturday if we didn't have the open date. I don't think Colin Summers could have played, I don't think Whit Barnes would have played. Scott Betros would not have played, and possibly a couple of others.

"You know that if you don't have some of your better players on the field — whether it's by injury or other problems Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Wake Forest Demon Deacons suspend six players

Wake Forest at Maryland -6.5 O/U 47.5

Wake Forest announced that six players have been suspended for Saturday's game at Maryland.

"I'm disappointed that some of our kids made poor decisions,'' Coach Jim Grobe said Friday in a statement. "These are good kids who just need to learn from their mistakes.''

Prior to the news, Maryland was -6 across the board. Most shops are now -6.5/-7.

College Football Gambling: Wake Forest's Grobe thinks spread vs. FSU too high

09.12.2012     08:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest at Florida State -28.5 O/U 54.5

Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe just earned the Sportsmemo Seal of Approval. When asked about being such a big underdog to Florida State this weekend, Grobe dropped two of the greatest quotes we've ever come across.

"I think we're about a 150-point underdog," Grobe said. "Holly, she can't wait to get the USA Today and see what the spread is. I mean it about knocked me off my chair when she told me what the spread was."

"And then (Tuesday) she told me it's gone to 26½,'' Grobe said. "There's been a lot of money bet. I thought, 'Man, that's too many points.' But apparently the nation doesn't think that that's quite enough."

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: Wake Forest vs. Mississippi State

Wake Forest vs. Mississippi State Friday, 3:40 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Mississippi State -6.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Mississippi State -6.5 O/U 47
Rob Veno Power Rating: Mississippi State -7.5

Erin Rynning's Betting Take: The Music City Bowl presents an interesting dilemma of basic bowl handicapping – matchups vs. motivation.  You would think Wake Forest would have motivation on its side after dropping four of its last five games, including an embarrassing 41-7 loss to Vanderbilt to close out the regular season.  Meanwhile, Mississippi State could very easily be disinterested for this game.  Last season was a storybook journey for the Bulldogs, which culminated in the dismantling of famed Michigan on New Year’s Day.  This showdown with Wake Forest just might not be enough Read more

College Basketball Betting News: ACC looks way down outside of Duke and UNC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With finals exams upon us, the college basketball card is light so I'll be providing conference breakdowns throughout the week.

ACC - Duke and North Carolina are clearly established as the league's elite while Boston College may not win a conference game. The rest of the league though looks to be a toss up with everyone showing a lot more weakness than strength. Virginia, Virginia Tech and Florida State are off to decent starts in part because of their commitment to defend. Offensively though, there are going to be plenty of nights where all three teams struggle to score 60. But that seems to be the norm in the ACC this year. Miami, Georgia Tech and Clemson are all below average offensively. Outside of North Carolina and Duke, the best ACC offense I have seen is NC State though the Wolfpack don't defend and look very undisciplined under first-year head coach Mark Gottfried. Maryland is a work in progress under Mark Turgeon and could go one of two ways. If the Terps eventually buy into what Turgeon preaches, they'll survive. If not, it could get really ugly. Wake Forest is improved and will assuredly better last season's 1-15 ACC mark. As bad as the ACC Read more

College Football Betting Notes: Five-win Vanderbilt favored at Wake Forest

Vanderbilt -1.5 at Wake Forest O/U 49.5

Interesting situation with Vanderbilt (5-6) vying for a bowl berth but favored on the road following a disheartening overtime loss to in-state rival Tennessee. Wake Forest has already hit the six-win plateau but claims this week's game is just as important as any other. The Demon Deacons won last year's meeting in Nashville, 34-13.

"Nobody likes to lose, especially the way that we did," defensive tackle Rob Lohr said. "We have to bounce back, get it back this week and make it to a bowl game. It's definitely a one-game season. We have to be ready."

“That’s the thing we can’t do (is act relieved to get to Read more
