Wake Forest vs. Temple
Military Bowl
Tuesday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Temple -13 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: Temple -10 O/U 41.5
Recommendation: Temple

Defense is the anchor for each of these teams who rank in the Top 20 in scoring defense. Temple’s numbers all around are slightly better but the Demon Deacons have been very strong against a more difficult schedule. My power ratings show Temple to have a 33.5 average opponent rating while Wake Forest’s schedule shows their opponents averaged 42.5. It’s interesting to break this game down and try to assess how much the strength of schedule difference negates the defensive statistical difference. The other side of the ball shows a glaring difference between the potency of these offenses. After stumbling a bit in their first two games, Temple has gone on to average 430.2 in their last 11 contests. Conversely, Wake Forest only gained over 400 yards of offense one time all season and that game was against FCS Delaware which went 4-7 this season. The Deacons were 125th out of 128 FBS teams in Total Offense this Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Boston College Eagles at Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Boston College at Wake Forest
Saturday, Noon PT
CRIS Opener:
Wake Forest -4 O/U 36
CRIS Current: Wake Forest -3 O/U 36.5
Recommendation: Wake Forest

The obvious reaction to this game is a situational one which would suggest Boston College plus the points because a win will make them bowl eligible. After blowing out Connecticut 30-0 last Saturday, the Eagles find themselves 5-6 which will have them motivated and focused this weekend. The question is, are they good enough to get the job done? Last week once again I outlined their Jekyl and Hyde defensive efforts which totally coincide with the style of opposing offense. This week again favors success rather than failure for the BC stop unit since Wake Forest is a methodical offense sans dual threat quarterback and high powered spread scheme. After stifling the pedestrian UConn offense last week BC has now allowed nine first downs per game, 42 ypg rushing on 1.6 per carry, 133.5 ypg passing, and 175.5 ypg on only 3.3 per play against methodical/traditional systems. The average score of those games is 28-8.5 in favor Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Florida State Seminoles

Wake Forest at Florida State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -23.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Florida State -21 O/U 53
Recommendation: Under

FSU escaped Miami with a 20-19 victory when the Hurricanes missed a game-tying extra point late in the fourth quarter. FSU now comes home to face a tough defensive-minded Wake Forest team. Although FSU will be coached not to overlook the Demon Deacons having the same focus and effort that its had against Miami could be difficult. The Seminoles enter this game with a bunch of injuries plus starting linebacker Matthew Thomas will serve a first half suspension (ejected for targeting last week). Adding pressure to the secondary which has been unsteady since the loss of star CB Derwin James four weeks ago is the loss of starting FS Nate Andrews (45 career games, 24 starts) who has been lost for the season after tearing a pectoral muscle last Saturday.

Wake Forest meanwhile played through and to some extent used adverse weather conditions at home last week to defeat up-tempo Syracuse, 28-9.  The Demon Deacons defense played very well and Read more

Syracuse at Wake Forest
Saturday, 4 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
Wake Forest -3 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Wake Forest -3 O/U 54
Recommendation: Wake Forest

Game time of 7 pm local on Saturday night is important here because rain figures to be a significant factor due to the looming tropical storm. That should make this a very sloppy track which likely bothers the extreme tempo of Syracuse. Rain is projected to be steady on Saturday and intensify as the day goes on brings ball handling on each end of the passing game into play. I expect Dino Babers to level his play calling a bit and work in more of the ground game. The Fieldturf surface here at BB&T Field doesn’t present the same degree of offensive limitation that natural grass would but nonetheless the steady rain will probably dictate some changes.

Wake Forest has been solid on the ground this season against foes who they can push around and the Syracuse run defense fits that bill (205 ypg allowed). The Demon Deacons play calling percentages is just a tick over 60/40 for the season and they will use the run to shorten the game and keep the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at NC State Wolfpack

Wake Forest at NC State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
NC State -9 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: NC State -11 O/U 48.5
Recommendation: Under

On a perfect 3-0 run with the ACC free play involving the Pittsburgh Panthers, I’ll shift away and tap into an Atlantic Division contest. Situational edge here goes to the Wolfpack which enter the game off of a bye week. Last season NC State had the same bye week situation and won 35-17 in Winston Salem. That could be where the similarities end because at this juncture of the season, the fundamentals in this matchup look a bit different.

In their late October meeting last season, NC State running back Matt Dayes ran wild scoring two touchdowns of 50+ yards and gaining 205 overall. Dayes and the NC State ground game have had a strong start to this season (210.7 ypg) but the Wake Forest run defense has been a rock allowing just 88.5 rypg and 2.7 per carry. What has been vulnerable is the Demon Deacons pass defense which has yielded an average of 414 ypg in contests versus Duke and Indiana. Wake Forest’s other two games were Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Duke Blue Devils at Northwestern Wildcats

Duke at Northwestern
Saturday, 5 pm PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Northwestern -6 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Both clubs enter this contest off bad losses to weak opposition with Duke losing a 24-14 conference decision to Wake Forest and the Wildcats falling to FCS Illinois State 9-7 on a last second field goal. It’s early, but the outcome of this game could go a long ways in determining whether or not either of these teams reach the postseason.

Duke's offense is going through some transitional issues as starting quarterback Thomas Sirk was lost for the year with a torn Achilles and two new offensive lineman try to gel within the rotation. The Blue Devils were held to just 37 rushing yards last game, and in return allowed 239 yards on the ground and three touchdowns to Demon Deacons freshman tailback Cade Carney. Note that last year, Duke held Wake to only 112 yards on the ground. Duke’s rush defense surrendered only 3.61 ypc in 2015 thanks in large part to do-everything hybrid linebacker Jeremy Cash who was arguably the most Read more

College Football Handicapping: Nowhere to go but up for Wake Forest offense

08.03.2016     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of our favorite things to blog about during the summer is bad college football offenses. Yesterday, we discussed the Kansas Jayhawks who remain married to the "air raid" offense despite not having nearly enough talent to pull it off. Wake Forest is projected to be far more vanilla in its approach after averaging less than 300 ypg of total offense against the ACC. Despite winning only three games, there were plenty of examples that Wake could be competitive. In four games against Indiana, Florida State, Louisville, and Duke, the Demon Deacons lost each by one score and were outgained by a combined 57 yards. Most of that however had to do with Wake's defense. Take away games against high-powered North Carolina and Clemson and Wake's seasonal defensive numbers (5.16 ypp allowed) were solid. But the Read more

College Football Gambling: Baylor set to bring in former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe

05.31.2016     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In full-on damage control mode, Baylor has decided to bring in former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe on an interim basis. Grobe put together an impressive stretch three-year stretch from 2006-08 where the Demon Deacons went 28-12 thanks in large part to a +39 combined turnover margin. He failed to produce a winning season after that and eventually resigned in 2013. As Grobe mentioned following the announcement, winning will likely take a backseat to cleaning up what has evolved into a total mess. The Bears' season over/under wins opened 9un-125 and has since been bet down to 9un-160. Baylor opens the season with its annual three "gimmie" wins (Northwestern State, SMU, and Rice).

"He has successfully led two FBS programs during his career," McCaw said in the statement. "Coach Grobe enjoys an impeccable reputation within the intercollegiate athletics community and is a man of great integrity and faith."
