College Football Betting: Wake Forest in better shape after bye week

10.19.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest at Virginia -3.5 O/U 52.5

After a host of suspensions and injuries, Wake Forest appears close to full strength after the bye week. Note however that the offensive line still has questions with two original starters out for the season.

"I think the open date's been good for us,'' Grobe said. "We would have had a bunch of guys not play (last) Saturday if we didn't have the open date. I don't think Colin Summers could have played, I don't think Whit Barnes would have played. Scott Betros would not have played, and possibly a couple of others.

"You know that if you don't have some of your better players on the field — whether it's by injury or other problems Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Wake Forest Demon Deacons suspend six players

Wake Forest at Maryland -6.5 O/U 47.5

Wake Forest announced that six players have been suspended for Saturday's game at Maryland.

"I'm disappointed that some of our kids made poor decisions,'' Coach Jim Grobe said Friday in a statement. "These are good kids who just need to learn from their mistakes.''

Prior to the news, Maryland was -6 across the board. Most shops are now -6.5/-7.

College Football Gambling: Wake Forest's Grobe thinks spread vs. FSU too high

Wake Forest at Florida State -28.5 O/U 54.5

Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe just earned the Sportsmemo Seal of Approval. When asked about being such a big underdog to Florida State this weekend, Grobe dropped two of the greatest quotes we've ever come across.

"I think we're about a 150-point underdog," Grobe said. "Holly, she can't wait to get the USA Today and see what the spread is. I mean it about knocked me off my chair when she told me what the spread was."

"And then (Tuesday) she told me it's gone to 26½,'' Grobe said. "There's been a lot of money bet. I thought, 'Man, that's too many points.' But apparently the nation doesn't think that that's quite enough."

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: Wake Forest vs. Mississippi State

Wake Forest vs. Mississippi State Friday, 3:40 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Mississippi State -6.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Mississippi State -6.5 O/U 47
Rob Veno Power Rating: Mississippi State -7.5

Erin Rynning's Betting Take: The Music City Bowl presents an interesting dilemma of basic bowl handicapping – matchups vs. motivation.  You would think Wake Forest would have motivation on its side after dropping four of its last five games, including an embarrassing 41-7 loss to Vanderbilt to close out the regular season.  Meanwhile, Mississippi State could very easily be disinterested for this game.  Last season was a storybook journey for the Bulldogs, which culminated in the dismantling of famed Michigan on New Year’s Day.  This showdown with Wake Forest just might not be enough Read more

College Basketball Betting News: ACC looks way down outside of Duke and UNC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With finals exams upon us, the college basketball card is light so I'll be providing conference breakdowns throughout the week.

ACC - Duke and North Carolina are clearly established as the league's elite while Boston College may not win a conference game. The rest of the league though looks to be a toss up with everyone showing a lot more weakness than strength. Virginia, Virginia Tech and Florida State are off to decent starts in part because of their commitment to defend. Offensively though, there are going to be plenty of nights where all three teams struggle to score 60. But that seems to be the norm in the ACC this year. Miami, Georgia Tech and Clemson are all below average offensively. Outside of North Carolina and Duke, the best ACC offense I have seen is NC State though the Wolfpack don't defend and look very undisciplined under first-year head coach Mark Gottfried. Maryland is a work in progress under Mark Turgeon and could go one of two ways. If the Terps eventually buy into what Turgeon preaches, they'll survive. If not, it could get really ugly. Wake Forest is improved and will assuredly better last season's 1-15 ACC mark. As bad as the ACC Read more

College Football Betting Notes: Five-win Vanderbilt favored at Wake Forest

Vanderbilt -1.5 at Wake Forest O/U 49.5

Interesting situation with Vanderbilt (5-6) vying for a bowl berth but favored on the road following a disheartening overtime loss to in-state rival Tennessee. Wake Forest has already hit the six-win plateau but claims this week's game is just as important as any other. The Demon Deacons won last year's meeting in Nashville, 34-13.

"Nobody likes to lose, especially the way that we did," defensive tackle Rob Lohr said. "We have to bounce back, get it back this week and make it to a bowl game. It's definitely a one-game season. We have to be ready."

“That’s the thing we can’t do (is act relieved to get to Read more

College Basketball Betting Notes: Introducing your Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Loyola Maryland at Wake Forest -1.5

So much for wiping the slate clean. After last year's disaster, this is what Wake Forest has heading into this season: Four walk-ons, five scholarship players, one kid transferred to USC, another was kicked off the team, a third was suspended the first semester and a another left the program after a DUI. Hence why the Demon Deacons are 1.5-point home favorites over mediocre Loyola-Maryland.

"We have just got to work with what we have. This is the hand we're dealt with and we're not complaining."

NCAAF Handicapper Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at North Carolina Tar Heels

Wake Forest at North Carolina -6.5 O/U 53.5
Recommendation: North Carolina

North Carolina hosts Wake Forest on Saturday, and I’m not in agreement with the betting support of the Demon Deacons.  The Tar Heels were crushed by Clemson last week 59-38 but a closer look shows that they had six turnovers (mostly self-inflicted) while also allowing two defensive touchdowns. Wake Forest has turned the ball over five times all season; a major factor behind their surprising record (5-2 SU overall, 4-1 ACC). But the divergent marks and recent results set up for some value on the home side. Two weeks ago, North Carolina (5-3, 1-3 ACC) outgained a superior and surging Miami (FL) team 429-311 and held the Hurricanes to 44 yards rushing yet lost 30-24. The UNC defense should be able to duplicate that type of statistical performance against Wake’s suspect ground game (101 ypg, 2.9 ypr).

On the flip side, the Tar Heels are primed for plenty of Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Florida State laying double-digits off of bye week

Florida State -13 at Wake Forest O/U 49.5

After dropping two straight and then having a much need bye week, Florida State heads to Wake Forest on Saturday as a double-digit road favorite – a role the Seminoles haven't been in since 2008.

FSU quarterback EJ Manuel and wide receiver Bert Reed both went through a full practice on Tuesday. Head coach Jimbo Fisher has not committed to Manuel as the starter.

Wake Forest meanwhile is starting to look more and more like some of Jim Grobe's previous teams – statistically dull but sound across the board. Quarterback Tanner Price took his lumps last year but has this offense on the move (422.5 ypg, 34.5 ppg) . The Demon Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Bettors fade Boston College despite Harris' return

Wake Forest -2.5 at Boston College O/U 49

Boston College head coach Steve Spaziani hinted that running back Montel Harris' workload would increase after he made his season debut in last week's win over UMass.

Teddy Covers noted that his power ratings had Wake Forest -5 which suggests that oddsmakers were perhaps giving too much credit for Harris' return. The betting markets though feel that Harris will not be a factor as the line has steadily crept Wake's way. Of course there is also the possibility that bettors simply don’t trust the Eagles to beat a BCS foe without or without a healthy Harris which at this point is a fairly logical stance.
