College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Northern Colorado Bears at Weber State Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Northern Colorado at Weber State -13
Recommendation: Weber State

Northern Colorado has played a brutal schedule; one a lot of Big Sky teams would struggle with. But unfortunately for the Bears, traveling to Weber State tonight isn't much of a step down in class. I've been chomping at the bit to step in and support UNC but they've been on the road for nearly the entire non-conference and aren't good enough to compete with strong teams on the highway. The storyline for Northern Colorado is really a simple one. Yes, they were extremely young last year but they led the  country in three-point shooting at a staggering 45.1% and seventh in effective FG% at 55.1% and despite all that, they won nine games and were 5-11 in Big Sky play. This year, they are shooting only 30.5% from three and as a result have beaten only one DI team. Now they aren't going to shoot 30% all season but they just so happen to be facing one of the best three-point shooting Read more

College Football Handicapping: First half betting trends to watch

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While second half betting in football garners much more attention and money from bettors, there’s also money to be made on specific teams each season betting on the first half. Obviously there is much more speculation involved in playing first halves simply because you don’t get the benefit of watching an entire half play out before you make your wager. In examining all boarded teams that have had three first half betting results thus far, it’s interesting to note that there is only one team in the land that has gone OVER in all three. There are seven that have stayed UNDER the first half total in all three of their games. In this column I’ll take a quick look at the four teams with the most decisive results and then list the other four at the end. These four have been easy moneymakers:

1. Bowling Green – Where has the Falcons offense gone? Even with junior QB Matt Schilz at the helm and seven returning offensive starters, Bowling Green has produced a grand total of 17 combined points. The disheartening part for BGSU fans is that two of their opponents have been Toledo and Idaho who possess below average defenses. The lack of Read more

CIT Free Betting Pick: Weber State Wildcats at Loyola Marymount Lions

Weber State at Loyola Marymount -3.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

Outside Big Sky play, Weber State was repeatedly exposed on the defensive end of the floor. Against St. Mary's, BYU and Cal, the Wildcats surrendered 87, 94 and 77 points. They also struggled on the road, allowed nearly 73 ppg. The end result was a season long average of 105.7 points per possessions allowed which is very similar to that of Cal State Fullerton (108.2) – a team Loyola Marymount hung 88 on in the first round of the CIT. LMU played its fair share of moderately tempo games but showed a willingness to run against San Francisco and BYU – two teams very similar to Weber State. Certainly a game both side would like to win, but I once against don't expect much intensity on the defensive end which will get us over the 145 mark.

Big Ten Tournament Gambling Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Favorite – Ohio State – The Big Ten conference featured a three-way tie for the regular season title with Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan all at 13-5. However, after the Buckeyes took care of business in East Lansing last week they are priced as small favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis on Sunday. A team like Michigan could very well be satisfied with its regular season first place finish, while looking instead to peak for the Big Dance. And under Tom Izzo, Michigan State is notorious for not putting much emphasis on this tournament. As for the Buckeyes, they are led by All-American Jered Sullinger (16.9 ppg), Aaron Craft and William Buford. The Buckeyes fought immaturity at times this season, but still finished with a strong 25-6 record. Ohio State perhaps peaked too early in 2011 (34-3, lost in the Sweet Sixteen) but after some struggles in February, the tournament could serve as a springboard to the Big Dance.

Darkhorse – Northwestern – The Wildcats enter the Big Ten tournament hoping to make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. With an 18-12 overall record the Wildcats are firmly on Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Montana and Weber State duke it out for Big Sky title

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Weber State at Montana -4.5 O/U 140

Big showdown in the Big Sky as Montana (14-1) plays host to Weber State (14-1) with the winner not only earning the outright crown but also the right to host the semifinals and finals of the conference tournament. Weber State (-5) won the first meeting 80-64.

“You know what it is? I think it’s really cool, it’s just really cool,” Weber State’s personable coach Randy Rahe said. “I’m sure the Griz feel this way: If you go 14-1 you’d probably have the league wrapped up by about two or three games by this time of year. Same on our part. It’s one of those, not strange, but good years where you have two good teams. They’ve done a phenomenal job and our guys have done fine and here we are.

“I think our veteran guys will keep things in perspective,” Read more

College Basketball Betting Trends: Taking a look at Over and Under teams

A quick glance at teams that have trended over and under the total thus far and whether or not it will continue.

UNDER TEAMS

Virginia (1-5 O/U) - After being lined 123 against TCU and the game landing 114 back in mid-November, UVA's game have routinely been in the 113-118 price range. The capabilities of opposing offenses will improve once ACC play starts but the Cavaliers play great defense and are more than comfortable playing games with 60 possessions or fewer.

Kansas (1-6 O/U) - Bill Self noted earlier this week that the Jayhawks are going to be forced to win a lot of "ugly games" due to a drop-off in offensive talent. They went flying over the total last time out against Long Beach (145.5, 88-80 final) but the fact remains that KU is relying more on defense and no longer has as much scoring punch.

UConn (1-4 O/U) - The Huskies only "over" came in overtime against Florida State. There would have been some more overs had the games been lined. This small trend seems to be random as UConn is playing at a fairly normal pace and looking to run when given Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Weber State loses top rebounder, best defender

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Weber State at BYU -13.5 O.U 147

No, Weber State didn't lose all-everything Damian Lillard but they lost arguably their next best thing. Senior forward Kyle Bullinger will be out 4-6 weeks with an elbow injury. Bullinger isn't much of an offensive threat but he leads the Wildcats in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and would have certainly helped out tonight in defending BYU's frontline of Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies.

"I'm just sick to my stomach for him," Rahe said. "He epitomizes what we're all about. He's one of those kids who, if you need a tough rebound, he goes and gets it; you need to take a charge or make a big play, he does it; you need to put him on the best offensive player, and he shuts 'em down. He's our tough guy. He's our identity.

– Nathan Scheelhaase is back after gutting out his freshman season. There were times last season where Scheelhaase looked good (see four TDs against Purdue) and others where the offense was specifically geared so he wouldn’t have to throw the football. Despite his inexperience, Illinois averaged nearly 400 ypg of offense in Big Ten play. Read more

St Mary's plays unique non-conference tilt against Weber State

03.11.2011     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
Weber State at St. Mary's -15 O/U 140

If you scroll all the way to the bottom of today's college basketball card (Game #896) you'll notice and odd matchup between St. Mary's and Weber State. Weber State's star player Damian Lillard has been out since earlier this season and the Wildcats need play one more game so that Lillard falls to the “30 percent of games played” prerequisite so  that he can earn another year of eligibility. For the Gaels, they are using this game as a warm up for the postseason. Back in 2009, they played a similar game against Eastern Washington and won 85-65. St. Mary's certainly wants to win this game though the intensity level is not expected to be great. We would expect the Gaels to score close to or over 80 points which perhaps provides value on the over 140.

Saturday CBB Free Play: Weber State at Sacramento State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Weber State -8.5 at Sacramento State O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Under

Sacramento State has shown a strong home/road dichotomy when it comes to game scores and pace. On the road in Big Sky play, the Hornets have produced these games:

at Eastern Washington 88-79 OT
at Idaho State 68-63 OT
at Weber State 84-71
at Northern Arizona 79-58
at Portland State 86-80
at Montana 64-44
at Montana State 74-71

Now we take a look at their games at home against the same opponents:

vs. Montana State 61-59
vs. Montana 68-52
vs. Northern Colorado 77-72
vs. Eastern Washington 57-55
vs. Idaho State 74-63
vs. Portland State 63-55
vs. Northern Arizona 63-42

To no surprise, Sacramento State is 6-1 O/U on the road and 2-5 O/U at the Hornet's Nest. Tonight, they play host to Weber State, who is still in the hunt for the outright league title. Because of Portland State's postseason ineligibility, Sacramento State has a rare shot to make Read more
