College Basketball Gambling: Kansas State's up-and-down season continues

02.05.2015     01:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Man, Kansas State is a mess. After starting the season 7-7, the Wildcats reeled off five wins in six games to reposition themselves as a potential NCAA Tournament squad. Less than two weeks later, K-State is off three straight losses and arguably their best player, Marcus Foster, has been suspended. Foster has been in and out of Bruce Weber's doghouse for much of the season and while he's been an obvious distraction to the team, the Wildcats don't bring much to the table without him. Last night, without Foster, the Wildcats managed only 47 points in a 17-point loss to bottom feeder Texas Tech. Something has to give on Saturday as KSU plays host to an equally toxic Texas squad that has dropped four straight.

“Our whole team, we have been plagued from the start of the season by immaturity, by a lack of discipline and a lack of consistency,” Weber told reporters after the game. “That has been on and off the court, all year. I gave them a sheet of paper at the beginning of Read more

We’ve got brackets to break down! I’ll offer a quick take on the 28 matchups already set for Thursday and Friday. Games are listed in rotation order.

The A-10 got a handful of mediocre teams like Dayton into the NCAA Tournament mix, but the Flyers will certainly be looking forward to a matchup against an Ohio State team that has repeatedly avoided them in non-conference play. The Buckeyes enter the tourney on an 0-6 ATS run; just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 tries as chalk.

Syracuse, too, was a pointspread disaster area down the stretch, cashing only one winning bet in their last eight ballgames. But Western Michigan’s only win against an NCAA Tournament team came on the opening night of the season, back on November 8th, when they beat New Mexico State.

Phil Martelli’s Saint Joseph’s team hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2004, when Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were his starting guards. UConn is a Top 10 team for free throw shooting percentage; always key in this ‘short favorite’ pointspread Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Thursday's Big Sky games have huge postseason implications

03.05.2014     08:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Keep an eye on tomorrow's Big Sky slate as nearly every matchup has postseason implications. Of the league's 11 teams, only seven make the conference tournament. And as of Wednesday, seven of the 11 teams are 10-8, 10-9, 9-9, or 8-10. Weber State clinched the top seed and a first round bye. North Dakota is also in following last night's win over Northern Colorado.

Standings (Thursday game)
Weber State 13-5 (at Portland State)
North Dakota 12-7 (at Southern Utah)
Montana 11-7 (at Sacramento State)
Northern Arizona 10-8 (vs. Montana State)
Northern Colorado 10-9 (at Southern Utah on Sat.)
Portland State 9-9 (vs. Weber State)
Eastern Washington 9-9 (vs. Idaho State)
Montana State 9-9 (at Northern Arizona)
Sacramento State 9-9 (vs. Montana)
Idaho State 8-10 (at Eastern Washington)
Southern Utah 0-18 (vs. North Dakota)

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 1-27-2014

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The incredible streak of Cincinnati unders came to a screeching halt in Sunday's 80-76 win at Temple. The 156 combined went 'over the 133.5-point total with nearly four minutes to spare. The under is now 13-2 for the Bearcats this season and 26-4 in their last 30 games. As I've stated many times, these low-scoring games for Cincy are largely based upon the defensive presence provided by Justin Jackson, who protects the rim and cleans the glass. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half and did not return.

Nevertheless, the pace for another under looked decent at halftime when Cincy had a 36-26 advantage (1st half total was 62/62.5). But Temple's Dalton Pepper caught fire in the second half, burying seven 3's and scoring 27 of his 33 points. Cincy led by 19 early in the second half, but a triple by Pepper evened the game up with 25 seconds remaining. Mick Cronin's team pulled it out, though, and Sean Kilpatrick finished with 29 points. Jackson's status for Thursday's crucial AAC showdown at Louisville is very iffy. He wasn't able to play in a loss at the Yum! Center last year, either. Before Temple struck for 76 on the Jackson-less Bearcats, they had not given up Read more

College Basketball Betting Preview: Iowa State Cyclones at BYU Cougars

11.20.2013     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A ton of angles to consider for tonight's Iowa State-BYU matchup. From a situational standpoint, the spot favors the home side as the Cougars are in a revenge mode after last year's 83-62 loss in Ames. The Cyclones are also off a big over Michigan and head on the road (to elevation) for the first time this year with a host of new players. On the flip side, ISU can score and BYU has had its struggles on the defensive end of the floor. Up 20 with 13 minutes to go against Weber State, the Cougars allowed the Wildcats to climb back in it late and failed to cover the closing number in a nine-point win. Going back to last season, BYU allowed the quality offenses of Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Washington, Santa Clara, and San Francisco to top 1.03 points per possession at the Marriott Center. Also a factor is the health of BYU's Tyler Haws (29.5 ppg) who missed the last two Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Northern Colorado Bears at Weber State Wildcats

Northern Colorado at Weber State -13
Recommendation: Weber State

Northern Colorado has played a brutal schedule; one a lot of Big Sky teams would struggle with. But unfortunately for the Bears, traveling to Weber State tonight isn't much of a step down in class. I've been chomping at the bit to step in and support UNC but they've been on the road for nearly the entire non-conference and aren't good enough to compete with strong teams on the highway. The storyline for Northern Colorado is really a simple one. Yes, they were extremely young last year but they led the  country in three-point shooting at a staggering 45.1% and seventh in effective FG% at 55.1% and despite all that, they won nine games and were 5-11 in Big Sky play. This year, they are shooting only 30.5% from three and as a result have beaten only one DI team. Now they aren't going to shoot 30% all season but they just so happen to be facing one of the best three-point shooting Read more

College Football Handicapping: First half betting trends to watch

09.21.2012     02:47 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While second half betting in football garners much more attention and money from bettors, there’s also money to be made on specific teams each season betting on the first half. Obviously there is much more speculation involved in playing first halves simply because you don’t get the benefit of watching an entire half play out before you make your wager. In examining all boarded teams that have had three first half betting results thus far, it’s interesting to note that there is only one team in the land that has gone OVER in all three. There are seven that have stayed UNDER the first half total in all three of their games. In this column I’ll take a quick look at the four teams with the most decisive results and then list the other four at the end. These four have been easy moneymakers:

1. Bowling Green – Where has the Falcons offense gone? Even with junior QB Matt Schilz at the helm and seven returning offensive starters, Bowling Green has produced a grand total of 17 combined points. The disheartening part for BGSU fans is that two of their opponents have been Toledo and Idaho who possess below average defenses. The lack of Read more

CIT Free Betting Pick: Weber State Wildcats at Loyola Marymount Lions

Weber State at Loyola Marymount -3.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

Outside Big Sky play, Weber State was repeatedly exposed on the defensive end of the floor. Against St. Mary's, BYU and Cal, the Wildcats surrendered 87, 94 and 77 points. They also struggled on the road, allowed nearly 73 ppg. The end result was a season long average of 105.7 points per possessions allowed which is very similar to that of Cal State Fullerton (108.2) – a team Loyola Marymount hung 88 on in the first round of the CIT. LMU played its fair share of moderately tempo games but showed a willingness to run against San Francisco and BYU – two teams very similar to Weber State. Certainly a game both side would like to win, but I once against don't expect much intensity on the defensive end which will get us over the 145 mark.

Big Ten Tournament Gambling Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Favorite – Ohio State – The Big Ten conference featured a three-way tie for the regular season title with Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan all at 13-5. However, after the Buckeyes took care of business in East Lansing last week they are priced as small favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis on Sunday. A team like Michigan could very well be satisfied with its regular season first place finish, while looking instead to peak for the Big Dance. And under Tom Izzo, Michigan State is notorious for not putting much emphasis on this tournament. As for the Buckeyes, they are led by All-American Jered Sullinger (16.9 ppg), Aaron Craft and William Buford. The Buckeyes fought immaturity at times this season, but still finished with a strong 25-6 record. Ohio State perhaps peaked too early in 2011 (34-3, lost in the Sweet Sixteen) but after some struggles in February, the tournament could serve as a springboard to the Big Dance.

Darkhorse – Northwestern – The Wildcats enter the Big Ten tournament hoping to make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. With an 18-12 overall record the Wildcats are firmly on Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Montana and Weber State duke it out for Big Sky title

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Weber State at Montana -4.5 O/U 140

Big showdown in the Big Sky as Montana (14-1) plays host to Weber State (14-1) with the winner not only earning the outright crown but also the right to host the semifinals and finals of the conference tournament. Weber State (-5) won the first meeting 80-64.

“You know what it is? I think it’s really cool, it’s just really cool,” Weber State’s personable coach Randy Rahe said. “I’m sure the Griz feel this way: If you go 14-1 you’d probably have the league wrapped up by about two or three games by this time of year. Same on our part. It’s one of those, not strange, but good years where you have two good teams. They’ve done a phenomenal job and our guys have done fine and here we are.

“I think our veteran guys will keep things in perspective,” Read more
