MLB Handicapper Free Play: Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros

06.30.2015     11:14 AM     Drew Martin     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City (Duffy) at Houston (Keuchel) -147 O/U 7
Recommendation: Houston

In what could be a preview of the American League Championship Series the Royals will look to even things up in Game 2 of three game set in Houston.  The AL Central leading Royals have been in a bit of an offensive slump over the last week with a team OPS of .651. The lefty heavy Royals are also sporting a very pedestrian .708 team OPS vs. lefties this year, which does not translate well for tonight’s matchup against Dallas Keuchel. Keuchel is having a career year with a 9.7% swinging strike rate to go along with a 2.90 SIERA; both marks are by far his career highs and among league leaders. Keuchel's ground ball rate is an astonishing 64.5% which complements the Astros defense which leads the majors in slugging % on ground balls allowed. The Astros team OPS of .752 over the last week is over .100 points higher than the Royals. Danny Duffy, who has made only one start since a stint on the DL with shoulder issues, has a 5.44 ERA and ugly 5.23 FIP on the road vs. righties -- something the Astros have plenty of. Matchup warrants laying the medium-sized price with the Read more

Georgia student busted for bookmaking operation

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
"Dad, I need some help. So I got pinched for booking. Yeah, we were making a killing -- these clowns have no idea how to bet. Oh, and another thing. I may of had some coke on me when they kicked down my door. Don't worry, just wire me $5K so I can post bail. We should probably keep this from mom, no? Dad? Hello? You're breaking up. Shit."

The argument for legalized betting on college sports rages on

06.30.2015     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another article on the pros and cons of legalized sports betting on college athletics.

“While there is a potential seamy underside and chances of point shaving, (sports gambling) is not going away,” said Ohio University associate professor David Ridpath, president of the West Haven, Conn.-based Drake Group, which supports reform in college athletics. “Keeping it regulated and in the open, I think, will make it more above board.”

“You can't get the starting running back at USC to accept a gambling bribe to shave points because they're going to throw away an NFL contract,” said Central Michigan professor Tim Otteman, who specializes in sports betting in college athletics. “But if you're going to offer (a starter) at Toledo or Central Michigan $10,000 when they're going to graduate and make $35,000 as a teacher, they probably have the ability to potentially do that.”

MLB Gambling Update: Boston's Rodriguez caught tipping pitches

06.30.2015     09:02 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Boston rookie Eduardo Rodriguez has a lot of upside. And he's shown as much with nearly unhittable performances in four of his six starts. The other two, however, were really bad. We blogged the other day that his outing vs. Toronto (4.2 IP, 9 ER) wasn't as bad as it seemed with a number of "seeing eye" hits and a pop fly lost in the sun. His last outing (3.2 IP, 6 ER vs. Baltimore) looks just as bad on the surface but reports have surfaced that that Rodriguez was tipping his pitches. As bettors, you can't completely discredit either outing -- no question he got hit around. But a pitcher's stat line doesn't always tell the full story. Assuming he makes an adjustment, tonight will still mark a significant challenge as the Blue Jays hit lefties harder than any team in baseball.

“It was borderline obvious,” Willis said Monday, via The Providence Journal.

Phil Mickelson tied to illegal gambling outfit

06.30.2015     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone is pretty much aware that Phil Mickelson likes to gamble. This, however, we did not know...

But a 56-year-old former sports gambling handicapper, acting as a conduit for an offshore gambling operation, pleaded guilty last week to laundering approximately $2.75 million of money that two sources told Outside the Lines belonged to Mickelson.

The money, according to the documents, came from a "gambling client" and had been transferred into Silveira's Wells Fargo Bank account. Three days later, Silveira transferred $2.475 million and then $275,000 into another of his Wells Fargo accounts. The next day, Silveira transferred the $2.475 million to another account he controlled at JPMorgan Chase Bank.
