WNBA Betting Preview: Washington Mystics

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Continued coverage on Helmut Sports' 2010 WNBA Team-by-Team Betting Preview. Every day will feature three team capsules as we prepare you for the start of the season. These previews can be found exclusively at sportsmemo.com.

Washington Mystics
2009:  16-18 SU, 18-16 ATS, 18-16 O/U
Key Additions: Kristin Haynie, Katie Smith
Key Losses: Alana Beard

Not a lot was expected from the Mystics in 2009. They traded a first round draft pick away for the perennially injured Lindsey Harding and for the first time in her career she made it through the entire season injury free. She played all 34 regular season games, had career highs in every category and really made a difference with this team. Washington was dealt a huge blow when it was announced guard Alana Beard would undergo ankle surgery and miss the entire 2010 campaign. She was the team’s leading scorer and a four-time all-defensive honoree.  During the offseason, the Mystics signed veteran free agent Read more

Milwaukee Brewers bullpen continues to struggle

05.12.2010     02:09 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a quality outing by Yovani Gallardo against the Braves, it was the Milwaukee bullpen that decided to do the pooping today. The Brewers have of a ton of issues with their pitching staff and the team (15-19) just seems to be treading water despite the fact that the offense leads the National League in runs scored. The Trevor Hoffman disaster is only a part of the problem as Manny Parra – who should be a starter – and Carlos Villanueva – who also mysteriously has the look of a starter – both coughed up two runs apiece today. Below are the updated numbers of Milwaukee’s bullpen.

American League West Bullpen Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Rob Veno

Oakland – An embarrassment of riches make up this bullpen which is currently overloaded with nine arms. Last night they struggled at Texas allowing three separate comebacks in a 13-inning loss but that result has been far from the norm. Their flexibility, diversity and depth make them capable of keeping opposing bats quiet in close games while also protecting leads. When entering a game this season, Oakland’s bullpen has held the first hitter to a .181 batting average which ranks third-best in the AL. They also have a very strong 91:41 strikeout-to-walk advantage. Closer Andrew Bailey (.176 BA against, 0.79 WHIP) and late innings specialist Brad Ziegler (.178 BA against, 1.13 WHIP) have been exceptional.  Each of them allow less than two base runners every three innings. Now that setup man Michael Wuertz is back from the DL, this trio figures to be tough to score on. Lefty Jerry Blevins has been the unsung hero with absolute domination over lefty Read more

Sports betting at Las Vegas Strip Casinos up in March

05.12.2010     11:46 AM     Printer Friendly
Looks as if sports betting contributed to the Las Vegas Strip Casinos having a fourth increased win in the past five months in March. The downtown Vegas Casinos didn't fare as well as they suffered their 22nd consecutive month of decline. The casinos are also having success with Baccarat.

The Strip accounts for more than 50 percent of the state’s gaming win. Strip casinos posted $467 million in, up 2.4 percent. For the first three months of the year, the gaming win on the Strip increased by 9.8 percent. Sports betting jumped 527.5 percent to $7.6 million. Players lost $12.1 million in basketball during the time of the NCAA basketball tournament.

For the 11th consecutive month, the 17 casinos that have Baccarat reported an increase, up to $52.7 million.

The political climate from sports betting swings again?

As the pendulum swings along the political spectrum, it certainly seems that the upcoming 2010 midterm elections will be a referendum on “Big Government.” Most pundits and pollsters are predicting a 1994-like purge of politicians that favor government spending. After eight years of runaway spending in the George W. Bush administration and epic spending increases under this current administration, it is once again in fashion to be a deficit hawk and a champion for limited government spending. The 2008 election was misinterpreted as a mandate for more liberal economic policies. In reality the election now looks more like a pure and simple mandate on the presidency of George W. Bush. The majority of the electorate since the seventies has been made up of self described “center-right” voters. In most national elections “center-right” candidates fail to win only as the result of scandals, third-party campaigns or the loss of life in foreign Read more

WNBA Betting Preview: Atlanta Dream

Continued coverage on Helmut Sports' 2010 WNBA Team-by-Team Betting Preview. Every day will feature three team capsules as we prepare you for the start of the season. These previews can be found exclusively at sportsmemo.com.

Atlanta Dream
2009: 18-16 SU, 20-12-1 ATS, 21-12 O/U
Key Additions: Kelly Miller, Yelena Leuchanka
Key Losses: Michelle Snow, Jennifer Lacy, Ivory Latta

Atlanta is still a young franchise, but the turnaround of success between 2008 and 2009 remarkable. After winning only four games in 2008, the Dream’s sophomore effort churned out a record of 18-16, good a third place finish in the Eastern Conference and a playoff berth. Despite losing to Detroit 2-0, this year’s roster remains essentially unchanged. One of the major issues I see with this team is the lack of production from the guard positions. Shalee Lehning played the quarterback role but was basically left unguarded because she couldn’t score (3.0 ppg) or shoot (20% 3-point). Read more

New York Liberty
2009: 13-21 SU, 16-16-1 ATS, 16-16-1 O/U
Key Additions: Nicole Powell, Taj McWilliams, Cappie Pondexter
Key Losses: Shameka Christon, Cathrine Kraayeveld, Loree Moore

We should see big improvements with this year’s Liberty team. They were able to Sacramento’s best play, Nicolle Powell, in the dispersal draft. They also will have the services of head coach Anne Donovan who is set to take over the Seton Hall program after the WNBA season. New York made a blockbuster three-way trade during the offseason which sent Shameka Christon and Cathrine Kraayeveld to Chicago in return for Cappie Pondexter (Phoenix) and Kelly Mazzante (Charlotte). Signing Taj McWilliams will add some much needed rebounding and mental toughness. Read more

H. Pence -115 vs. C. Rasmus Most Total Bases (-115 @ TheGreek)

Tim and I have spoke on the radio multiple times about how Colby Rasmus has made us a lot of money in these Total Bases matchups. We've pretty much gotten to the point where we blindly play on Rasmus against a righty and against when facing a lefty. This season, Rasmus is 3-for-19, .158 vs. southpaws and against tonight's starter Wandy Rodriguez, 0-for-9. Overall, there are is a .451 differential between Rasmus' slugging percentage righty vs. lefty. His competition today is Houston's Hunter Pence, who has hit safely in three straight games (6-for-12). He's also fared well against St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse (10-for-28, .357) throughout his career. There is always the chance that Rasmus doesn't start but if he does, a play on Pence has value. Play Pence.

Beckett on the shelf; Wakefield back in the rotation

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've had a lot of fun blogging about Boston starter Josh Beckett and his struggles. It didn't take a genius to figure out something was wrong. We finally got the news we were expecting as Beckett's next start has been pushed back due to back spasms. Whether or not "back spasms" means dead arm or shoulder discomfort remains to be seen. His next start was originally postponed until Friday but it now looks as if the delay will be longer. Tim Wakefield will jump back in the rotation after unceremoniously being demoted at the end of April. Wakefield is a -110 home favorite Read more

Padres and Nationals continue to produce profits

05.12.2010     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Fairway Jay

At the start of the 2010 season, the Washington Nationals were the longest shot on the board to win the World Series. Not far behind were the San Diego Padres who at over 100-1 were barely a blip on the screen of even the sharpest of bettors.

But understanding the value of these “bad” teams with poor public perception can produce great profits for the astute handicapper and bettor in the early season and often beyond. I’ve played on both of these teams a bit through the first portion of the season – unfortunately not nearly enough. Through May 10th, the Nationals and Padres were baseball’s top profit-producing teams – making money at home and on the road. San Diego (20-12) is currently leading the National League West while Washington (18-15) is tied for second in the East. Yesterday, I out out both teams as service play selections. The Padres (+140) delivered a winner over San Francisco with our top rated “Big Drive” Read more
