New York Yankees: Vazquez sent to the bullepn

05.17.2010     02:53 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Despite a solid outing last time out, New York's Javier Vazquez has been placed in the custody of the team's bullpen. This means Vazquez will not get a start during the short two-game set against Boston which starts this evening. His next scheduled start, this weekend against the Mets, may also be put on hold. According to reports, the only way Vazquez starts against the Mets is if he isn't used in relief. New York’s starting pitching has been phenomenal this season (3.42 ERA) despite Vazquez’ horrific numbers so the move may not be all that bad. But assuming he regains at least somewhat of his form, you’d have to like him chewing up innings late in the season when a guy like Hughes may start to break down and Read more

Ways and Means Committee talks gambling

05.17.2010     02:31 PM     Printer Friendly
On Wednesday, the House Ways and Means Committee will get together to chat about tax proposals associated with the legalization and regulation of internet gambling in the United States. Here is what they are saying...

The committee's inquiry will focus specifically on tax and revenue portions of bills introduced over the past year that would revise or totally roll back the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). That law, which cleared Congress in 2006, was slated to enter effect in December 2009, but lawmakers successfully lobbied for a six-month delay.

A previous attempt to explore UIGEA and its alternatives before the House Financial Services Committee was canceled in April because of a scheduling conflict. At the time, Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) promised to reschedule the hearing as soon as possible.

Unlike the Ways and Means hearing, which will focus on possible revenue sources, Frank's inquiry would have focused on two bills he authored as alternatives to

The Lakers looked like they were imploding during their first round series against Oklahoma City, but they’ve come on strong of late, winning six straight playoff games heading into the Western Conference Finals.   Their sweep of the Jazz was particularly impressive. Utah never played badly and they never stopped trying. Los Angeles was simply the superior team in every game.

Utah head coach Jerry Sloan: “They got just about everything you want. They got experience. They got guys that are long and big and can play inside. Gasol can go inside and outside with his game and he’s a terrific passer. They got all the size. They got a lot of guys that can pass the ball. That’s a tremendous asset for any team, and plus those guys have been in big games.”

“They’re tough to deal with and they put us out of sync because their defense is so good. Every shot you get is tough. They make you earn it. That’s why they Read more

Milwaukee (Gallardo) -110 at Cincinnati (Cueto)
Recommendation: Milwaukee

The Reds played their guts out over the weekend, taking two out of three from the St Louis Cardinals while moving into first place in the NL Central.  Here's a classic Dusty Baker quote, a clear indication of why the Reds are primed for a letdown as they face off against a hungry, desperate Brewers team tonight.  Baker: "You've got to enjoy the moment - enjoy May 16th.  My dad always said, 'Enjoy today because tomorrow isn't promised to anybody.'"   Cinci's Johnny Cueto is in a prime "bet against" spot today as well.  Cueto threw his first career complete game in his last outing, holding the light hitting Pirates to a single hit.  I'm always wary off a pitcher coming off his first career complete game, or a relatively rare dominant showing.  Look no further than Dallas Braden's loss in LA over the weekend immediately following his Read more

Baseball betting market reacts to power shortage

I've mentioned on the radio multiple times that on initial glance, based on what I remember last year, totals are a half run and sometimes a full run lower than what they were a year ago. Tonight in Baltimore for example, Kansas City's Kyle Davies takes on Brad Bergesen. Both pitchers own fringe stuff and ERA's above 5.00, and if you go back and look at last year's logs, 9.5 and above were placed on nearly 70% of their starts. Yet the market number opened at 9 and while it may eventually move to 9.5, you get the feeling that even with those two gas cans on the mound bettors are reluctant to play the over off such a key number. Go through a week's worth of totals and you'll likely come across a 6.5 or even a 6 – something you rarely saw last season, even in the NL West. Yesterday's Seattle at Tampa game closed at 6.5 and multiple Sportsmemo Handicappers released plays on the underRead more

Angels starter Scott Kazmir not right according to coaches

05.17.2010     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It looks as if Los Angeles Angels starter Scott Kazmir is still having problems according to a recent report which said the lefty threw an uncharacteristically high 62-pitch side session. Kazmir also recently has a closed door meeting with manager Mike Scioscia and pitching Mike Butcher. In six starts this season, Kazmir has made it out of the fifth inning only once. His 24:19 K-to-BB ratio is alarmingly bad as is the 6.82 ERA. Overall, it sounds as if it is a mechanical issue, something that he has struggled with throughout his career. Kazmir and the Angels are a +150 underdog on the road against Derek Holland and the Rangers tonight.

Kazmir has battled mechanics, worked on strengthening his lower body, gone on a search for more velocity and now is trying to find the proper arm slot. All those issues have been worked on since he came to

Los Angeles Dodgers back in the NL West hunt

05.17.2010     08:24 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (20-17) spent nearly the entire first month of the season stationed on the East Coast. When they returned home at the end of April they kicked things off with a shutout loss to the Pirates with dropped them to 8-14. But since then, things have started to pick up. Los Angeles is currently on a 12-3 run, including seven straight wins and back-to-back series sweeps over Arizona and San Diego. The hitting has been fairly consistent all season long though it was recently announced that the team’s best hitter, Andre Ethier, may head to the DL with a broken pinky. The pitching has really come around with a 3.67 ERA and 135 IP and 117 hits allowed during the current 15-game run. Over the last seven games, the Dodgers held every opponent to three runs or less. The saving grace for the starting staff has been Hiroki Kuroda. Los Angeles is 6-1 when Read more

J. Kubel vs. A. Hill -110 Most Total Bases

Yesterday Minnesota’s Jason Kubel hit a grand slam off Yankee closer Mariano Rivera which helped the Twins avoid a sweep in the Bronx. Up until that point, Kubel had really struggled with the bat this season, batting .224 with a .343 slugging percentage. Part of his problems have been because he can’t hit left-handed pitching. In 22 at-bats, Kubel has managed only four hits – none for extra base hits – this season. Go back to last year and you’ll notice that Kubel’s slugging percentage was .272 lower against southpaws. For his career, Kubel has produced only 133 total bases against lefties in 437 plate appearances. Assuming he starts, he’ll be facing lefty Dana Eveland who also shows dramatic lefty vs. right splits. Left-handed hitters are 5-for-28, .179 BA with no extra base hits this season against the southpaw. Aaron Hill has been hampered by a Read more

Chicago Cubs: The worst bet in baseball

05.17.2010     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
You don't have to be a sharp bettor to figure out that the Chicago Cubs are one of the most overvalued teams in all of sports. Dating back to 2003, Chicago has had exactly ONE PROFITABLE SEASON. Betting a measly $50 against the Cubs in every game since 2003 would have you up roughly +94 units or $4,700. This season, we aren't even to June and baseball's ultimate money burner is down nearly -15.0 units. And of course they are priced as if they were the Yankees. Below is a chart of Chicago's record when it closed as a -150 favorite or more.

St. Louis 8-17 in Kyle Lohse starts since May 2009

05.17.2010     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse has had a rough start (0-3, 5.68 ERA) to the 2010 campaign. In fact, since his breakout season of 2008 (15-6, 3.78 ERA), Lohse has been consistently ineffective. After opening April of 2009 with a 3-0 record and 1.97 ERA, Lohse hasn’t had a winning month or posted a monthly ERA below 4.50 when making more than one start. During that span, St. Louis is 8-17 when Lohse starts and 88-64 when he doesn’t.  And after that monster 2008 season, he of course secured a big contract – a situation as one blogger points out is very similar to that of former Cardinal Jeff Suppan, who as we know is about as fringe a MLB starter as you can get these days. Lohse takes the hill tonight at home against Washington as a -160 favorite with a total of 9. The Cardinals will be looking regain first place in the National League Central after losing five of six to Houston and Cincinnati.
