SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On Friday's Sportsmemo Radio Show, Teddy Covers broke down the NFL's potential move to 18 regular season games as well as a sneak peak at the AFC North. The segment (click here) runs about 45 minutes (fast forward to around 11:30). One thing we discussed was Cincinnati’s schedule. Here is a breakdown of the Bengals' non-conference games. Note that rivals Baltimore and Pittsburgh don't play either Indianapolis or San Diego.

Location - Team (2009 Record)
@ New England (10-6)
@ Carolina (8-8)
vs. Tampa Bay (3-13)
@ Atlanta (9-7)
vs. Miami (7-9)
@ Indianapolis (14-2)
vs. Buffalo (6-10)
@ NY Jets (9-7)
vs. New Orleans (13-3)
vs. San Diego (13-3)

Odds available for season ERA of Ubaldo Jimenez

06.18.2010     12:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here is an interesting prop currently available at Bet Cris. You can bet various ranges of Ubaldo Jimenez's season ending ERA. As of Friday, Jimenez was currently at 1.15. The betting favorite (+130) is anything between 1.30 and 1.99. From 1994-97, Greg Maddux (twice), Kevin Brown and Pedro Martinez were your yearly leaders in the National League, all with sub-2.00 ERA's. Pedro did it again with Boston in 2000 with a 1.74. Roger Clemens was the most recent with a 1.87 ERA in 2005 for Houston. Impressive stuff considering it was during the height of the steroid era. Of course we know two of those four arms – Pedro a possible culprit as well – were on the juice as well. Regardless, the odds suggest that Jimenez will produce a similar season. Jimenez has thrown 101.1 innings. If he remains healthy for the entire year, we project 20 more starts and 240 total innings. Below are his odds on the various outcomes and well as the maximum amount of earned runs allowed per range.

Weekend Bullpen Report: Marlins short on arms against Rays

06.18.2010     12:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Rob Veno

The constant rearranging of the Florida Marlins bullpen due to injuries and ineffectiveness is likely to make that group vulnerable once again in this weekend’s series against Tampa Bay. Over the last 24 hours the Marlins have made four more changes which prevent them from establishing any continuity inside their relief corps. The loss of setup man Clay Hensley to the 15-day DL to a neck strain is a major blow since Hensley has arguably been their best reliever this season. With their eighth inning man out until at least June 27th, righty Brian Sanches will probably be asked to fill the role. While Hensley has fanned 42 in 32.1 innings while posting a 3:1 K-to-BB ratio, Sanches has struck out just 11 while walking 10 in his 17 innings. The dominoes continue to fall from there as the seventh inning becomes less stable without Sanches and the middle men are currently a hodgepodge of Triple-A call ups and average to below average veterans. 34-year old RH Scott Read more

Interleague Betting Free Play: Minnesota at Philadelphia

Submitted by Teddy Covers   Minnesota (Blackburn) +120 at Philadelphia (Blanton)
Recommendation: Minnesota

Joe Blanton has been an unmitigated disaster for the Philadelphia Phillies so far this season.  He missed the first month of the season recovering from injury, and he’s thrown only two quality starts in eight tries since re-joining the rotation.  The veteran righty allowed career highs of nine runs and 13 hits in just four innings of work against Boston last weekend.  In fact, Blanton has allowed 25 runs in his last four starts. His 7.28 ERA is the third worst among major-league pitchers with at least 40 innings of work, and the Phillies are just 2-6 with Blanton on the mound.  Blanton’s quote: “I’ve been pretty horrible.”  We certainly shouldn’t forget that the Phillies are a sub .500 team at home over the last month.  The Phillies are just 3-17 in their last 20 home games against AL foes!   Read more

Friday MLB Free Play: Cleveland at Pittsburgh

Cleveland (Carmona) +110 at Pittsburgh (Maholm)
Recommendation: Cleveland

Interleague play continues with a pair of bottom feeders battling Friday night at PNC Park. The Indians (25-40) have lost four in a row, but the Pirates (23-43) are in a free-fall, losers of 11-straight games all as underdog. Pittsburgh is battling but their psyche is hurting. Now money is coming in on the Pirates as favorite against Cleveland, yet the Indians have the better starting pitcher and more efficient offense recently. The Indians have scored 51 runs over their last eight games, all at home. Cleveland faced some dominant starting pitchers in their previous 10-game road trip, yet they scored 7, 10 and 13 runs while doing damage against left-handed starting pitchers Mark Buehrle (White Sox), John Danks (White Read more

Heading into the World Cup, FIFA announced that players, coaches and referees could call in and report any "match-fixing" type activities. The Early Warning System (EWS) was created and founded by FIFA to serve as a watchdog for any suspicious activity. We'd like to report some suspicious activity (see: picture on your left). Betting impact of potential move to 18-game NFL regular season

06.18.2010     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently stated that he is in favor of ditching the four-game preseason format in order to create more regular season games. From a betting perspective, some feel the proposed 2 preseason/18-game regular season could be beneficial. Prior to the Internet boom, Sportsmemo's Tim Trushel welcomed the generous preseason slate but these days he'd rather see the extra regular season games.

"Back in the day, you could gain a big edge in these preseason games because information wasn't so readily available," Trushel said. "You might have to make a couple phone calls but finding out how long the starters were slated to go and having a reasonable amount of time before the market reacted was huge. Now, everything is out in the open and game plans are available on thousands of sites across the web. Couple that with the flighty nature of these preseason games to begin with and the two extra regular Read more

Recommendation: Under 8

Interleague play continues with a series few will be playing much attention to as the Indians visit Pittsburgh to battle the Pirates. The Indians expect to send the often embattled Fausto Carmona to the hill. Carmona has actually turned the corner this season sporting a 3.23 ERA. He’s shown much more consistency with his sinking fastball, while his mechanics are finally holding firm. The big right-hander is off a fabulous complete game against Washington where he allowed just one run while striking out seven. Maybe more important is the fact that Carmona didn’t walk anyone which as we know has always been an Read more

Sumo wrestlers apparently like betting on baseball

06.18.2010     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
If you see any funny market moves on New York Mets starter Hisanori Takahashi, you now know why.

Stablemaster Tokitsukaze and two wrestlers in the top makuuchi division, Goeido and Toyohibiki, have admitted being involved in illegal gambling on professional baseball in a statement submitted to the Japan Sumo Association, sources said Friday.

Stablemaster Otake, who has admitted to police that he had bet on baseball games, and Toyonoshima, the top-division wrestler at Tokitsukaze's stable who had formerly wrestled at the third-highest rank of sekiwake, have also submitted statements to the association acknowledging their involvement, the sources said.

In a survey conducted by the JSA on illegal gambling in sumo, 29 association members, including elders, said they have indulged in gambling on baseball games — allegedly under an arrangement with the mob.

Jason Bay vs. Robinson Cano Most Total Bases Prop Bet

Jason Bay vs. Robinson Cano -115 Most Total Bases
Recommendation: Cano

I'd say about 70% of the time with these total bases matchups it comes down to who can go 1-for-4 vs. 0-for-4. Having the ability to hit for power is a plus but you typically like to go to war with who has the best shot at producing that lone single. Taking that into account, tonight’s matchup with Robinson Cano vs. Jason Bay is lopsided. We get the typical righty vs. righty and lefty vs. lefty price but Cano has proven throughout his career he can hit southpaws on a consistent basis. Since 2007, in over 650 at-bats, Cano has hit .312 vs. left-handed pitching. And when factoring in that "lone single" theory, few are better in the game than Cano. Over his last 32 games, Cano has hit safely 29 times and produced a .409 batting average and .629 slugging percentage. And as an added bonus, he walked only seven times in 140 Read more
