NFL Betting: Cincinnati Bengals Over 8.5 wins

07.20.2010     01:29 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Rob Veno   Cincinnati Bengals Season Over/Under Wins
Recommendation: Over 8.5 +140 @ The Greek

Picking up where Teddy Covers left off yesterday with his discussion on How to Handicap NFL Futures, I’m going to zero in specifically on the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously the season win totals are set on a scale of about 20 percent team personnel and 80 percent schedule which open up an abundance of variables. Seasons rarely play out as cut and dry as glancing down a schedule in late June and saying “they should win this game” and “they should lose that game”. I’m a proponent of three things:  (1) Teams with existing talent from their previous season that upgraded during this offseason, (2) Teams that have diversity on offense and defense, and (3) Teams that got a brief taste of playoff football and are supremely hungry to for more. I form my Read more

College Football Betting: USF Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This continues Andrew Lange's ongoing series "Proceed with Caution” and “All Systems Go!” as he handicaps various football teams and determines their betting status heading into the 2010 campaign.

USF Bulls
Record: 8-5, 6-5 ATS
Returning Starters Off/Def: 10/5
Preseason Accolades: Phil Steele - 4th Big East. Athlon - No. 45

Earlier this summer I wrote that USF has a decent amount of betting value to win the Big East at +500. Skip Holtz takes over for longtime head coach Jim Leavitt who was forced to resign after an altercation with a player. Leavitt was a good coach but the timing of the move could pay dividends. USF went 2-5 and 3-4 over the last two years in the Big East and the switch to Holtz could provide a much needed spark.

The offense returns 10 starters including Read more

Werth and Utley reportedly spotted at St. Louis casino

07.20.2010     10:11 AM     Printer Friendly
We're not much for rumors but this one is pretty funny. One Philadelphia blogger reports that multiple Twitter posts had Chase Utley and Jayson Werth out until 4 am last night at a St. Louis casino. The author makes the point that it isn't that big of a deal of which we completley agree. If every athlete was called out for a trip the casino the NBA would need to hire three more PR firms to deflect the attention. Also funny is that Utley is actually still on the DL. Werth on the other hand is batting .222 in July and "should have played Blackjack; at least then he could have hit." Plenty of time for the riverboat gamblers to recover as the Phillies take on the Cardinals tonight at 8:15 pm ET.

Can Washington State improve in 2010?

07.20.2010     08:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into last year it wasn't hard to find "positive" information regarding Washington State. They were off a 2-12 campaign and the media was quick to use the “it can’t get any worse” card as reason to suggest improvement. Unfortunately, things didn’t get better and in a lot of respects they got worse. The Cougars allowed fewer points per game (38.5) but the yards per game and play averages were higher. The one saving grace was the team's turnover margin improved from -25 to -7. Despite only three straight up wins over the last two years, Washington State did cover the occasional pointspread with nine ATS victories in 25 opportunities. Given how the current state of the program is regarded in the media and betting marketplace, any sort of jump would likely result in some sort of betting success. Here is an article with both "positive" and "realistic" commentary regarding Read more

New York Jets look to improve already stout defense

07.20.2010     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
Last season, the New York Jets were a pretty good defensive team. So good they posted these numbers...   2009 Stats - NFL Rank
252.3 total ypg allowed - 1st
153.7 passing ypg allowed - 1st
26 TDs allowed - 1st
14.8 ppg allowed - 1st

The question is can they maintain that type of production? According to one report, there are plenty of reasons to think that the defense could actually improve in 2010.

“We (defense) can be thirty percent better,” said Bart Scott, speaking at the team’s open minicamp practice. “I mean, there’s so many different things…We had so many mistakes on film with miscommunications and things like that. So if we can just tighten things up and not have those errors, we’ll be fine. But I think when you add the Read more

Al Groh looks to take Georgia Tech defense to the next level

07.20.2010     08:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former Virginia head coach Al Groh may not have been the brightest offensive mind in college football but his teams have always managed to perform well on the defensive end. This season Groh is taking his famed 3-4 defense to Atlanta where he will serve as Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator. The Yellow Jackets went 20-7 in head coach Paul Johnson's first two seasons. The one thing that seemed to be lacking for Tech is consistency on the defensive side of the ball. Last season, they gave up 44 points to Florida State, allowed Georgia and Clemson to rush for over 300 yards and surrender 250 yards or more passing on six different occasions. This year's team returns eight defensive starters.

Rarely does a school win a conference championship and make a radical change. But that's what Johnson did after last season, firing defensive coordinator Dave Wommack soon after the ACC-champion Yellow Jackets lost to Iowa 24-14 in Read more

Miami Hurricanes favored to win ACC title

07.20.2010     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of hype surrounding the Miami Hurricanes as they enter the campaign ranked in the top 15 in most preseason publications. Oddsmakers made the Canes slight favorites (+250) to win the ACC, just ahead of rival Florida State (+300). No one can deny that under head coach Randy Shannon's watch, the team has improved each and every year.   Miami Year-by-Year Numbers
2007: 5-7 SU, 4-8 ATS, 20.6 ppg, 26.0 ppg allowed
2008: 7-6 SU, 5-7 ATS, 27.1 ppg, 24.2 ppg allowed
2009: 9-4 SU, 6-6 ATS, 30.3 ppg, 22.2 ppg allowed

The Hurricanes return a majority of their key personnel from last season including quarterback Jacory Harris. The schedule features a three-game road stretch with Ohio Read more

Tuesday MLB Prop Bet: Colorado at Florida

Submitted by Andrew Lange

Colorado (Francis) at Florida (Robertson)
Recommendation: Florida Over 4 Team Total (-122 @ Pinnacle)

Colorado's Jeff Francis has been in steady decline over the course of his abbreviated season. Over his last three starts, he's been pounded to the tune of 12 IP, 21 hits, eight walks and only four strikeouts. His seasonal ERA is 5.14 which is extremely high considering he's been lucky with the long ball with only three surrendered all year. Francis has also had a tough time against right-handed batters which is not a good sign considering every batter in the Marlins projected lineup this evening comes from the right side. The Rockies bullpen will undoubtedly be a factor as Francis has thrown over 100 pitches only twice on the year. The right-handed duo of Huston Street and Rafael Betancourt has thrown back-to-back days while fellow righty Matt Belisle threw 38 pitches last night. Let's play Florida over the team total of 4 tonight.

Betting longshot cashes in at British Open

07.20.2010     06:48 AM     Printer Friendly

Submitted by Fairway Jay

While many off shore sportsbooks failed to list Louis Oosthuizen in their win pools, the Hilton in Las Vegas had the South African longshot at odds of 200-1.

Las Vegas Hilton Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay noted that three tickets were purchased on Oosthuizen to win totaling $19.  Still, a $10 ticket for $2,000 return is not too bad.

If you were able to fire at Oosthuizen after round 1, you cashed tickets from 22-1 to 25-1 at some major offshore shops.  Oosthuizen was able to benefit from a favorable draw in round 2, but still had to deal with stronger winds while the players who went off later were called off the course for over one hour before returning in brutally difficult conditions.

Oosthuizen won his first European Tour event in March this year and moved into the top-50 world rank at that time.  So while he was listed at very long odds Read more
