Picking up where Teddy Covers left off yesterday with his discussion on How to Handicap NFL Futures, I’m going to zero in specifically on the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously the season win totals are set on a scale of about 20 percent team personnel and 80 percent schedule which open up an abundance of variables. Seasons rarely play out as cut and dry as glancing down a schedule in late June and saying “they should win this game” and “they should lose that game”. Werth and Utley reportedly spotted at St. Louis casino

We're not much for rumors but this one is pretty funny. One Philadelphia blogger reports that multiple Twitter posts had Chase Utley and Jayson Werth out until 4 am last night at a St. Louis casino. The author makes the point that it isn't that big of a deal of which we completley agree. If every athlete was called out for a trip the casino the NBA would need to hire three more PR firms to deflect the attention. Also funny is that Utley is actually still on the DL. Werth on the other hand is batting .222 in July and "should have played Blackjack; at least then he could have hit." Plenty of time for the riverboat gamblers to recover as the Phillies take on the Cardinals tonight at 8:15 pm ET.

Can Washington State improve in 2010?

Heading into last year it wasn't hard to find "positive" information regarding Washington State. They were off a 2-12 campaign and the media was quick to use the “it can’t get any worse” card as reason to suggest improvement. Unfortunately, things didn’t get better and in a lot of respects they got worse. The Cougars allowed fewer points per game (38.5) but the yards per game and play averages were higher. The one saving grace was the team's turnover margin improved from -25 to -7. Despite only three straight up wins over the last two years, Washington State did cover the occasional pointspread with nine ATS victories in 25 opportunities. Given how the current state of the program is regarded in the media and betting marketplace, any sort of jump would likely result in some sort of betting success. New York Jets look to improve already stout defense

Last season, the New York Jets were a pretty good defensive team. So good they posted these numbers...   2009 Stats - NFL Rank

Al Groh looks to take Georgia Tech defense to the next level

Former Virginia head coach Al Groh may not have been the brightest offensive mind in college football but his teams have always managed to perform well on the defensive end. This season Groh is taking his famed 3-4 defense to Atlanta where he will serve as Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator. The Yellow Jackets went 20-7 in head coach Paul Johnson's first two seasons. The one thing that seemed to be lacking for Tech is consistency on the defensive side of the ball. Last season, they gave up 44 points to Florida State, allowed Georgia and Clemson to rush for over 300 yards and surrender 250 yards or more passing on six different occasions. This year's team returns eight defensive starters.

Miami Hurricanes favored to win ACC title

A lot of hype surrounding the Miami Hurricanes as they enter the campaign ranked in the top 15 in most preseason publications. Oddsmakers made the Canes slight favorites (+250) to win the ACC, just ahead of rival Florida State (+300). Tuesday MLB Prop Bet: Colorado at Florida

Recommendation: Florida Over 4 Team Total (-122 @ Pinnacle)

Colorado's Jeff Francis has been in steady decline over the course of his abbreviated season. Over his last three starts, he's been pounded to the tune of 12 IP, 21 hits, eight walks and only four strikeouts. His seasonal ERA is 5.14 which is extremely high considering he's been lucky with the long ball with only three surrendered all year. Francis has also had a tough time against right-handed batters which is not a good sign considering every batter in the Marlins projected lineup this evening comes from the right side. The Rockies bullpen will undoubtedly be a factor as Francis has thrown over 100 pitches only twice on the year. The right-handed duo of Huston Street and Rafael Betancourt has thrown back-to-back days while fellow righty Matt Belisle threw 38 pitches last night. Betting longshot cashes in at British Open

While many off shore sportsbooks failed to list Louis Oosthuizen in their win pools, the Hilton in Las Vegas had the South African longshot at odds of 200-1.
Las Vegas Hilton Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay noted that three tickets were purchased on Oosthuizen to win totaling $19.  Still, a $10 ticket for $2,000 return is not too bad.

If you were able to fire at Oosthuizen after round 1, you cashed tickets from 22-1 to 25-1 at some major offshore shops.  Oosthuizen was able to benefit from a favorable draw in round 2, but still had to deal with stronger winds while the players who went off later were called off the course for over one hour before returning in brutally difficult conditions.
