Boise State shows small but noteworthy flaw

08.25.2010     02:16 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

Finding something negative about Boise State is a chore. In fact, based on the amount of puff piece stories, braggadocios blogs, top tier preseason rankings, and busload of returning starters I'm a little shocked the Broncos aren't favored by two touchdowns over Virginia Tech. But with their cross-country trek to face the Hokies nearing, I stumbled upon a little nugget that may not gain much attention but is certainly worth noting.

According to one local media outlet, no one knows exactly who will be starting along the offensive line in Week 1. The reason for the confusion is injuries.

In Phil Steele's Preseason Magazine, Boise was projected to return four of five offensive linemen with a starting lineup of: C-Thomas Byrd, RG-Will Lawrence, LG-Nate Potter, RT-Garrett Pendergast, LT-Charles Leno.

But this article shows some slightly different Read more

McNabb out for preseason; Redskins an underdog vs. Jets

08.25.2010     12:43 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Don't expect Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb (ankle sprain) to play again until the regular season. Head coach Mike Shanahan said that McNabb's chances of playing against the New York Jets this Friday were "very slim". Shanahan also pointed out that Week 4 of the preseason probably isn't a good idea either. Rex Grossman is expected to go the entire first half and could play into the third quarter. Grossman is 25-of-39, 335 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT this preseason. What happens when Grossman departs exactly, Shanahan isn't saying. Third- and fourth-stringers John Beck (seven attempts) and Richard Bartel (yet to play) have not seen much action thus far. The Redskins are 4.5-point underdog against the Jets.

Furyk and bettors miss out on potential payout

08.25.2010     10:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You didn't happen to place a bet on Jim Furyk to win The Barclays Tournament did you? You did. Oh, well the good news is you'll soon have more available funds in your account but that bad news is you'll never have a shot to cash your ticket because Furyk slept through an alarm and missed Wednesday's pro-am which will keep him out of Thursday's main event. PGA Tour Officials created a policy that forces players to participate in these pre-tournament pro-ams after some were bailing for dubious reasons. Furyk's third-place status in the FedEx standings will also take a hit as the winner is slated to take home $10 million. Furyk, a great guy by all accounts, owned up to the mistake and candidly said it was actually the second time it had happened.

Navy up to a 7-point favorite; Friedgen discusses preparations

08.25.2010     09:37 AM     Printer Friendly
Navy is now up to a 7-point favorite over Maryland for the September 6 season opener in Baltimore. The Midshipmen are off a 10-4 campaign including a 35-13 win over Missouri in the Texas Bowl in which they ran for 385 yards. But Navy was an underdog in that contest, a role they've played extremely well over the past few years. They've struggled however to perform as a favorite which could happen as many as eight times in 2010.

As for Maryland, not much is expected in Ralph Friedgen's last season. The Terps return 12 starters from a 2-10 squad. Friedgen recently spoke about game planning for Navy's offense. He seems aware of Navy's ability to throw the football, a strategy that nearly led to the Midshipmen's upset of Ohio State last season and something they worked on during the Read more

Chicago Bears GM discusses QB and OL issues

08.25.2010     08:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are a couple of snippets from an interview with Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo. Angelo discusses the team's quarterback situation as well as issues along along the offensive line. The Bears are 3.5-point home favorites over Arizona for Saturday.

Regarding the recent signing of veteran Todd Collins: JA: “We told him that if he comes in and shows he can still play—all veterans have to show us they can play—that he can win the backup job for the season."   LM: Did signing Collins become more of a priority after seeing Jay Cutler get sacked five times in the first half of last Saturday night’s preseason loss to the Oakland Raiders?

JA: “No, it didn’t. We had been talking to Todd for a while. We started conversations with Todd a day or so after Caleb got hurt. This didn’t just come up. These conversations had been ongoing.”

Like father like sons? And for Pete's sake, when will people learn that they aren't required to Tweet EVERYTHING they do. Especially if they are NCAA athletes, and especially if one is under the age of 21.

"Last night was stupid," Marcus Jordan, 20, wrote on his Twitter account. "... 35k at Haze... Totals 50k something the whole day.. Damn!! Going to the pool again today.. Gotta relax!"

Pitching matchups provide late season betting value

08.25.2010     08:04 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

I wanted to point out five baseball games for today that are very interesting from a price standpoint.   Cincinnati (Bailey) at San Francisco (Bumgarner) -110
Both teams are practically even record-wise. The Giants are 39-23 at home and Bumgarner is a better pitcher than Bailey yet the price is basically a pick 'em.

Chicago (Dempster) -105 at Washington (Marquis) -105
Another situation where both squads are practically even. The difference is Dempster owns a 3.56 ERA while Marquis' is 11.39. If this game took place in mid-May, the Cubs would be -150 favorite or more.

Los Angeles (Kuroda) EV at Milwaukee (Wolf)
Up until two weeks ago, the Dodgers had easily outperformed the Brewers from a seasonal standpoint but with LA all but out of the NL West race, the effort has waned and the gap is now minimal. That being said, here is another lopsided matchup of starting pitchers with Kurdoa sporting a 3.48 ERA and currently in good form Read more

Cleveland head coach Eric Mangini press conference

08.25.2010     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
Here is a transcribed version of a recent press conference with Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini. Mangini discussed what he expects out of this weekend's opponent, the Detroit Lions and also gives a status report on practically every individual player on the Browns. Mangini's bunch are 2-point road underdogs for Saturday's game in the Motor City.

Louisiana Tech offense suffers growing pains

08.25.2010     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
Before we anoint Louisiana Tech the greatest show on FieldTurf, keep in mind there are a lot of changes going on in Ruston with head coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin implementing a wide-open, high-octane offense. According to recent reports, the offense was a bit shaky during a recent scrimmage, most notably starting quarterback Steven Ensminger. Tech opens the season against Grambling prior to a road trip to Texas A&M.

Collectively, Tech's quarterbacks were 26-for-50 for 321 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions in 21 series.

"I was a disappointed in the offense," Dykes said after the scrimmage. "I thought we were nowhere near as consistent as we needed to be. We had some big plays but didn't put any substantial drives together. We have to do a better job, guys have to be tougher and work harder and work through some bumps and bruises we Read more

Detroit starters to play extended minutes against Browns

08.25.2010     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
Expect to see Detroit's starters play "into the third quarter" during Saturday's home game against Cleveland. Head coach Jim Schwartz did not say exactly how long the first string would go but seemed willing to extend their time should everything go according to plan. The Lions are currently 2-point favorites with a total of 38.

"I'm not 100 percent set on it," Schwartz said. "There'll be some exceptions in there, but for the most part I'd like to be able to do that. So much depends on if we have a situation occur. Then we might change our mind." "We're really not game-planning, so to speak," Schwartz said. "We're not going to have anything new for this game that we don't have in. But we are doing sort of a dry run, just taking the players through a week of preparation, things like that."

New 3-4 defense an early season advantage for Georgia

08.25.2010     06:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Georgia Bulldogs kick off the campaign by playing host to UL-Lafayette. The Dawgs are 28-point favorites and are currently Week 1's strongest consensus pick (77%) according to covers.com. One advantage Georgia has entering the season is the lack of knowledge other teams have regarding new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham's 3-4 defense. ULL head coach Rickey Bustle has known Grantham for over 20 years yet heading into next week's game, Bustle knows little of what to expect from UGA's stop unit.

"Really, no film is really good," Bustle said Tuesday. "You don't know what they're going to do. It's really tough to go into an opening game not knowing other than a 3-4 defense what they're going to do."

Georgia head coach Mark Richt also feels the switch in defense will give the team an early season edge.

"When you have a new defensive Read more
