Submitted by blog entry.
Throughout his career, Fairway Jay has kept a proprietary database of statistical information and utilized relevant rushing numbers and statistical guidelines to better assist him in providing point spread winners. This week Jay takes a look at the technical side of handicapping and provides some situations and technical ATS numbers to consider as you analyze your wagers to produce winners.

Buffalo at New England (-14 / 42.5)
Home favorites of more than 12 points off a SU loss as a favorite are 17-42-2 ATS, including 6-35 ATS since 1992. The Patriots are just 2-11 ATS their last 13 times installed as a double-digit favorite. Buffalo is 0-13 SU and 3-9-1 ATS their last 13 games against New England. Game 3 underdogs of 13 or more points are 10-3-1 ATS when they start the season 0-2 SU and ATS. Home favorites of more than 10 points off a SU loss as favorite are 14-42 ATS vs. division opponents (also applies against Ravens and Vikings).

Betting Preview: Utah State Aggies at San Diego State Aztecs

Submitted by blog entry.
Utah State at San Diego State -8.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: San Diego State

We’ve cashed a pair of back-to-back winners on San Diego State the past two weeks and the Aztecs are gaining steam and media attention in the process. Second year head coach Brady Hoke and his outstanding coordinators are quickly turning things around for this program. Last week San Diego State (+14.5) had Missouri flat out beat on the road while outplaying and outgaining the Tigers until a 68-yard bomb in the closing minute allowed Missouri to escape 27-24.

Still, San Diego State has been impressive in its opening three games going 2-1 including 3-0 against the spread (ATS). And while the line is rising (-8.5) this week in their home game against Utah State, I still expect the Aztecs to handle the Aggies.
San Diego State’s offense was expected to be pretty solid this season with quarterback Ryan Lindley a more polished passer and throwing to a trio of solid senior receivers. With improved offensive Read more

Betting Preview: San Jose State Spartans at Utah Utes

Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
San Jose at Utah -30.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Utah

San Jose State had just four players earn all-conference honors at the end of 2009. Three of those Spartans were named to the second-team and all graduated. The lone returnee of the ground, safety Duke Ihenacho, earned first-team honors and was one of only a handful of San Jose seniors on this year's squad. Last week against Southern Utah, Inenacho, who is routinely referred to as the teams’ best player, was injured and will miss the remainder of the season. The loss added to the laundry list of injuries for San Jose, who feature 14 freshmen and sophomores on its current depth chart. No senior defenders will start for the Spartans this weekend at Utah.

With all the injuries and a third game in four weeks against top-tier competition, this weekend provides another opportunity to play against the Spartans. At Alabama, they closed as a 38.5-point underdog Read more

Wisconsin says no let down against Austin Peay

09.24.2010     11:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Austin Peay at Wisconsin -42.5

If you are willing to dabble in the "Added-Added Board" as we like to call it, Wisconsin claims it won't limit the time of its starters against FCS Austin Peay. When asked if back-up quarterback Jon Budmayr would see any action, UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst said he would love to get him in, but doesn't want to "anger the football gods". And while the little guys have made headlines this season for a couple of close calls and upsets, Austin Peay doesn't fit the bill of someone that will give the Badgers any problems. The Governors beat NAIA Cumberland (Lange's alma mater) and allowed 56 points and 654 yards to Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders won 56-33 but it could have been worse considering MSTU had five drives end in a fumble, missed field goal or interception. Austin Peay lost 25 seniors from last year's 4-7 squad. Long-time head coach Rick Christophel has Read more

Florida State Seminoles moving the ball via the run

09.24.2010     10:54 AM     Printer Friendly
Wake Forest at Florida State -20 O/U 62.5

With Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder seemingly less than 100 percent (shoulder), the Seminoles have gone to a more run-oriented offense. Last season, when the Seminoles ran for 150+ yards, they went 5-1 SU. When they failed to top 150 yards, just 2-5. Against Oklahoma, the 'Noles played much of the game from behind so the 123-yard effort should be commended. The following week, FSU went for 278 yards on the ground (only 149 passing) in a 34-10 win over BYU. And their focus on the run-game may be more than just Ponder's injury. Rod Owens (graduated), Richard Goodman (graduated) and Jarmon Fortson (suspended) combined for 133 catches and 1,694 yards last season. Expect FSU to stick with the run this weekend against Wake Forest after racking up 217 yards last season in a 41-28 win in Winston Read more

Big East having trouble covering pointspreads

09.24.2010     10:32 AM     Printer Friendly
The Big East has had a tough start to the season. The most impressive win for the conference through three weeks? West Virginia's 31-17 win over Maryland. Overall, the Big East is 6-15-1 ATS. Eliminated games against FCS competition, and the number drops to 3-11-1 ATS.

Pittsburgh - Three-point loss at Utah followed by embarrassing performance at home in loss to Miami.

West Virginia - Needed overtime to beat Marshall. Jumped out to a 28-0 lead on Maryland but nearly blew cover as double-digit favorite against Maryland.

Cincinnati - Outscored 58-33 against mid-level Fresno State and NC State.

Syracuse - Blasted at Washington. Up only three at half last week against Maine before pulling away 38-14.

USF - Hung with Florida for a while before second half meltdown (31-7 outscored).

UConn - Crushed at Michigan. Dismal is Week 3 loss to Temple.

Rutgers - Read more

Ohio Bobcats search for ways to create big plays

09.24.2010     08:40 AM     Printer Friendly
Ohio at Marshall -6.5 O/U 45

The Ohio Bobcats are trying to find ways to spring for big gains, something that has eluded the team through its first three games. For the season, Bobcat quarterback Boo Jackson's longest completion is 35 yards. The longest rush for any Ohio player is just 20 yards. This weekend however, they go up against a Marshall defense that has allowed more than its fair share of "big plays". Against Ohio State, the Thundering Herd allowed a long rush of 45 yards and also a 65-yard pass. Against West Virginia, the Mountaineers rushed for a 55-yard run as well as four passes for over 20 yards. Last week against Bowling Green, Marshall allowed four pass plays of over 20 yards.

"We're in a little bit of a dilemma," Solich said. "We need to identify what we think we can do the best, whether that's heavy pass and try to mix in the run or

Kiffin not worred about covering pointspreads

09.24.2010     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
USC -22 at Washington State O/U 55.5

According to USC head coach Lane Kiffin, his team's goal is not to "impress pollsters or cover spreads". That notion is pretty obvious as the Trojans are 0-3 ATS (1-2 if you got a good number against Minnesota). This weekend, USC travels to Pullman to take on Washington State. The last two meetings have seen USC favored by -42.5 and -45. Next week, the Trojans have their conference home opener in a revenge spot against Washington.

Teams struggle after playing Paul Johnson coached teams

09.24.2010     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting angles here as some bloggers pointed out the "hangover effect" of playing Paul Johnson coached teams. The preparation for facing the option can be a difficult task but it is the high rate of failure the following week that is amazing. According to the post, teams are 15-41 SU after facing Paul Johnson off regular rest (six days). In terms of the ACC, teams are 2-6 (five straight losses) under the profile. The record jumps to 6-10 if you include teams with a bye week or extra rest – more time to recover – which actually bolsters the profile. The sample size for the ACC is not very large but this is certainly a trend to keep track of moving forward.

North Carolina will be put to the test this weekend as they travel to Rutgers. Last week, the Tar Heels were up 24-17 but Read more

Big East Injury Report Week 4

09.24.2010     06:29 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Here is the Big East injury report for this weekend. The conference decided prior to the season to have an official release of injured players. Pittsburgh however has chosen not to participate, sticking with the element of surprise. It worked wonders last night against Miami. As for those teams who did report, UConn and Louisville will be without their top defensive players.
