Baltimore at Pittsburgh -1 O/U 34.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

The Steelers and Ravens have played one tight contest after the next in recent years; a true hard-fought divisional rivalry. Both meetings last year were decided by a field goal, and each of the last five regular season meetings was been decided by six points or less. The underdog has been pointspread gold in this series: 4-0-1 ATS in those last five games. The betting markets are expecting another tight contest this weekend, with Pittsburgh currently installed as a 1-point home favorite over the visiting Ravens.

After only three weeks of regular season NFL action, the Steelers are one of only three unbeaten teams in the league.  They’ve achieved that record despite starting their fourth string quarterback, longtime veteran Charlie Batch. In eight years with Pittsburgh, Batch has only started five times, but the Steelers are 4-1 in those contests.

Miami -3.5 at Clemson O/U 51
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 9 am PT – ESPN 2

There have only been three meetings in the past eight seasons between these teams but all three needed overtime to determine the winner. Last year’s 40-37 Clemson road victory saw 11 lead changes while seven of the nine touchdowns came from 23 yards out or further. That quick strike ability in all three phases of the game exists again this year although there is somewhat of a role reversal in the return game as Miami ranks 7th nationally in punt return average and 10th in kickoff return average.

The pair of returns for touchdowns for the Hurricanes at Ohio State illustrates just how dangerous specialists Larry Miller and Travis Benjamin can be. With that being said, the primary way for the Hurricanes to travel the field and score quickly figures to be through the air. The fact that North Texas threw for 269 yards with a quarterback who had only two starts while Auburn was able to gain 203 on Read more

Injuries and line-up changes ignite positives for North Texas

09.29.2010     11:34 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
UL-Lafayette at North Texas -4.5 O/U 48.5

It is early but we've uncovered one of the first college football teams to completely change its identity. As a result of mounting injuries, North Texas was forced to make massive line-up changes and revamp the game plan. The first order of business was more focus on the run game. Through the Mean Green's first three games, they averaged 34.6 pass attempts. But last week against Florida Atlantic, the team attempted only 15 passes vs. 54 rushes (257 yards). It resulted in a big upset win and NT’s sixth victory since 2007. With the upcoming schedule loaded with soft Sun Belt defenses, we expect North Texas' run-heavy trend to continue.

"We were committed to running the football," coach Dodge said. "We threw it 15 times and completed 10 of them. There were more pass plays that were called, but there

Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Alabama Crimson Tide

Florida at Alabama -7.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Alabama
Saturday, 5 pm PT – CBS

This is a rematch of the last two SEC title games, with Alabama winning last year and Florida the year before as both went on to win the national title. These are different teams than we saw in Atlanta, however. Alabama lost nine starters on defense from a year ago and Florida lost most of its offensive production and skill players. The Tide looks even better on offense this year and was solid defensively through their first four games. Florida has struggled on offense but has been able to use its athleticism and speed advantages to overwhelm outclassed opponents.

Florida certainly misses Tim Tebow, but may miss tight end Aaron Hernandez and receiver Riley Cooper even more. From a conventional standpoint, the Gators’ offense has been very limited with quarterback John Brantley and the new receivers. They finally had a break out game last week against a very poor Kentucky defense and also added a new Read more

College Football quarterback situations for this weekend

09.29.2010     08:28 AM     Printer Friendly
Here are some college football quarterback updates from around the country.

Wake Forest - Tanner Prince is doubtful with a concussion. Ted Stachitas started the first two games but missed Monday's practice with bruised ribs. Head coach Jim Grobe has yet to name this weekend's starter.

Tulane - Lost its top two quarterbacks in last week's loss to Houston. Starter Ryan Griffin hurt his shoulder while his replacement, Kevin Moore, broke his finger and will be out two weeks. Griffin is expected to start this weekend at Rutgers with starting flanker Joe Kemp as his back-up.

Rutgers - Starter Tom Savage injured his ribs in last week's Read more

UL-Lafayette offensive line with under-the-radar issues

09.29.2010     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
UL-Lafayette at North Texas -4. O/U 48.5

Here is a bit of news that likely went unnoticed regarding UL-Lafayette's offensive line situation. It was discovered that in last week's loss to Middle Tennessee State that the Ragin Cajuns' o-line played without five back-ups and had only one reserve mix-in with the starters. That is a lot of work for six guys considering the offense ran 84 plays. Not surprising, ULL struggled mightily to run the football, needing 47 carries to record 126 yards (2.7 ypc). Oh yeah, they also allowed seven sacks!

...They [UL-Lafayette] also played without five backup offensive linemen due to injuries, leaving only one reserve to rotate with the starters.

Coach Bustle was unsure whether his five backup offensive linemen will be available this week. Those five players were

Dasher expected to start next Tuesday against Troy

09.29.2010     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
Without the services of quarterback Dwight Dasher, Middle Tennessee State has to feel somewhat good about its 2-2 start (1-0 Sun Belt). But for the Blue Raiders, the season officially begins next Tuesday as they play host to Troy with Dasher expected to start. After sitting four games due to suspension, it was announced yesterday that Dasher has been reinstated. The timing (and semi-bye week) couldn't have come at a better time as Dasher's replacements are banged up, as is the offensive line.

Results show that Martz has a significant impact

09.29.2010     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
About a month ago, few if any gave the Chicago Bears a chance to succeed after what was witnessed during the preseason. And when it came to analyzing Mike Martz and how his offense would work in the Windy City, the reaction was even more negative. But Chicago is 3-0 and quarterback Jay Cutler has, for the most part, looked impressive. While it didn’t necessarily show in the preseason, the one aspect of Martz's offense than seems to work no matter where he goes is an increase in the yards per pass attempt.

Texas vs. Oklahoma -3.5 O/U 45
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 9 am PT – ABC

Despite a 4-0 record coming into Saturday's annual football show against Texas at the Cotton Bowl, the Sooner defense is struggling. How ugly are the stats? How about 97th in the country in overall defense (just behind UL-Monroe) at 421.3 yards per game. OU’s performance against Air Force (458 yards of total offense; 351 on the ground) was considered an aberration because of the Falcons' unique offense. But last week, Cincinnati rolled up 461 yards, including 305 through the air. The one thing Oklahoma thought it could count on coming into the season was its defense but it looks as if the offense is going to need to do most of the work.

The good news is the offense is very potent. The passing attack ranks 10th nationally while the overall the offense is 34th. Through four games, wide receiver Ryan Broyles is averaging 120.5 ypg and just over 10 catches per contest and running back DeMarco Read more

Maryland secondary could get torched by Duke passing attack

09.29.2010     06:22 AM     Printer Friendly
Duke at Maryland -7.5 O/U 62.5

Heading into 2010, Maryland's defense had allowed more passing yards per game in each of the last six seasons culminating in last year dismal performance of 268 ypg allowed (97th) and 143.8 rating (105th). This season, the overall numbers on the surface are good (186 ypg) but a closer look shows considerable flaws. In Week 1, Maryland faced Navy's option, followed by a completely outclassed Morgan State team that hit just 7-of-28 passes. But when the competition featured a more formidable passing attack, Maryland’s secondary was hit hard. Against West Virginia, Geno Smith went 19-of-29 for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Last week, Wesley Carroll of Florida International slung it around for 355 yards and a pair of touchdowns. This week, the Terrapins face another pass oriented team in Duke. In last year's meeting, Thaddeus Lewis threw Read more
