CFB Handicapping: Washington Huskies at Arizona Wildcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (+6.5) at Arizona

A Saturday night dual in the desert as the Arizona Wildcats (5-1) host the Washington Huskies (3-3) in Pac-10 play.  Washington enters off a thrilling double-overtime win over Oregon State 35-34. The Huskies are now 2-1 in conference play with a pair of late wins over USC and Oregon State. Washington scored at least 30 points in those contests but now face the Pac-10’s top defense to date.  Still, Oregon State quarterback threw for 393 yards while completing 30 passes in the Beavers 29-27 win over Arizona. Washington quarterback Jake Locker should have the ball in the air often and is capable of piling up plenty of passing yards and completions.

Arizona head coach Mike Stoops is not only concerned with the injury to his starting quarterback Nick Foles, but the offensive line’s protection of any Wildcats quarterback. Arizona quarterbacks have been sacked 17 times; four more than all of last season.  Arizona is ranked #15 in the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Power Offenses

As we make the turn at the halfway point of the college football regular season, we can now utilize the stronger statistical numbers in evaluating teams and match-ups. Most BCS conference teams have now played 2-3 conferences games to give us realistic projections on their performance vs. similar opponents. No more ‘false favorites’ who padded their numbers vs. a soft non-conference schedule.

One area of strength I pay attention to at this time of year are teams which have strong, balanced offenses. As a guideline, I look for teams who both run and pass the ball for over 200 yards-per-game on average. However, with 75 teams passing for at least 200 yards per game and just 29 teams rushing for at least 200, I’ll modify the guidelines to include teams that run for at least 175 yards.

The chart below includes the 20 teams that run for 175+ and pass for 200+ yards per game. These teams listed below are your strongest ‘power’ offensive teams; those teams which can both steamroll an Read more

CFB Handicapping: Buckeyes ready to pounce on Boilermakers

10.22.2010     02:12 PM         Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Purdue at Ohio State -23.5 O/U 47

The Buckeyes battle the Boilermakers in Columbus, Ohio as this early kickoff can be seen on the Big Ten Network at Noon ET. Fairway’s football forecasts have had great success betting the Big Ten this season, now 5-1 including our Big Ten Game of the Year winner on Michigan State over Michigan. Our only loss was when the lowly Gophers completed a 30-yard up for grabs touchdown pass on fourth down and 11 late in the contest for a brutal back door at Wisconsin. Let’s see if we can fire up the Buckeye’s as a big betting favorite over the Boilermakers this week.

Ohio State (6-1) returns home to Columbus no longer the no. 1 team in the nation after losing 31-18 at Wisconsin last Saturday. While there have been many instances of a letdown and teams being flat following their first loss of the season while ranked high in the polls, I’ll forecast a Buckeyes blowout over the Boilermakers.

Ohio State has a something to settle with Purdue Read more

College Football Handicapping Podcast Report 10/23

10.22.2010     12:53 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Friday's Sportsmemo Radio Show covered every game on the college football betting board. Some of the highlights included Teddy Covers' analysis on the Wisconsin at Iowa showdown. Teddy pointed out that prior to the win over Ohio State, the Badgers had been a money burner and find themselves in a tough spot – potentially a little fat and happy – as they travel to Iowa City. Erin Rynning broke down the Oklahoma at Missouri matchup and felt that despite the Tigers' strong start, there simply wasn't enough betting value at the current number of +3. To listen to each individual handicapper's Podcast, see links below.

Betting Info: San Francisco 49ers have poor history on East Coast

10.22.2010     12:39 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco -2.5 at Carolina O/U 35.5

Fairway Jay mentioned on the radio that the San Francisco 49ers have historically not done well when traveling to the east coast. We found a blog with a couple of records. Also keep in mind that the 49ers won't travel home following Sunday's game at Carolina but instead take off for next week's game in London against the Denver Broncos.

Since 1999, the 49ers are 13-54 (.194 win percentage) in games that start at 1 p.m. (ET). They’re 13-13 (.500) in other road games. Since 2003, they are 7-38 (.156) in those early road starts (with four of those wins at St. Louis), and 6-10 (.375) in other road games.

Titans may go with Kerry Collins after Young misses practice

10.22.2010     12:27 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Tennessee -3 O/U 42.5

According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, who cited a league source, Tennessee's Vince Young was unable to practice Friday and that the Titans would be "surprised" if he plays Sunday against the Eagles. Young injured his leg in Monday's win over Jacksonville. Kerry Collins, who would start if Young is unable to go, finished 11-of-16 for 110 yards and a touchdown.

In other Titans news, wide receiver Kenny Britt got into an altercation at a local Nashville drinking establishment early Friday morning. He was excused from Friday practice and will reportedly have charges pressed against him. Britt was tied for the team lead in catches with 16.

Mississippi State could open up passing game against UAB

10.22.2010     08:30 AM     Printer Friendly
UAB at Mississippi State -20 O/U 52

At one point in its win over Florida last week, Mississippi State ran the ball on 24 consecutive plays. According to head coach Dan Mullen, the Bulldogs' offensive plan is often times dictated by how the game plays out. This week, they face a soft UAB pass defense. The Blazers allow 238.2 ypg (90th nationally) and have surrendered nine passing plays of 50 yards or more.

"We're going to have to be able to throw," Mullen said. "We got conservative in things (against Florida). But the game led us to do that. We were running the ball well."

Betting Info: Rain and wind expected for Oklahoma vs. Missouri

10.22.2010     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma -3 at Missouri O/U 53

Looks like there may be some weather concerns for Saturday's mid-afternoon game in Columbia, Mo. between Oklahoma and Missouri. The rain is expected to start late Friday evening and continue into Sunday. Winds are also expected to pick up with gusts out of the SSW of up to 20 mph. Based on the stadium layout that would mean teams will be going nearly directly into or with the wind.

Power outage at the Golden Nugget casino

10.22.2010     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
On Thursday night, Las Vegas' Golden Nugget casino was hit with a two-hour power outage. Luckily for one visitor, the salad bar was still intact when he returned.

Gary Pollock, a 66-year-old tourist from West Newton, Pa., said he was waiting for a salad at one of the casino's restaurants when a waiter told him to evacuate the casino.

"The lights went out and a siren started going," Pollock said from a sidewalk outside the casino while waiting to return inside. "Everybody's out here milling about, wondering what's going on."
