A record 11 teams enter the NCAA Tournament with a win percentage of less than .600. I feel that the NCAA Tournament is at its best with the current format and field, as expanding to 96 teams will bring more modest teams into the Big Dance. Isn’t that what the NIT, CBI and CIT offer? A chance for more teams to play in a postseason tournament, but not the top 20% of teams in the nation? Reward the best from each conference and the remaining quality teams and keep the NCAA Tournament as is – the greatest sporting event in the world.

The Galaxy has had the Sounders number with an all-time record of 4-1-1; 2-0-1 at Qwest Field including a 4-0 win last season. The Galaxy did lose their best player with Edson Buddle leaving in the offseason to try his hand in Germany, but replacements Juan Pablo Angel (formerly of New York) and Chad Barrett (Toronto FC) should be able to fill in nicely. They also played during the regular season that year with Louisville winning at home, 79-41. MSU has a legitimate post presence in Kenneth Faried, who will draw the attention of Cardinal defenders.
Morehead has other weapons but if they are going to compete in this game, they’ll have to do it on the defensive end of the floor. Expect the Eagles to play at a slow pace and try to shorten the game. Louisville really changed its identity the last third of the season. luck factor of the NCAA Tournament
. According to Silver’s study, UNLV, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Washington received the "unluckiest draws" while Florida, San Diego State, Pittsburgh and Kansas earned the "luckiest draws". Silver uses various formulas to uncover where teams
should
be seeded based on their RPI/Sagarin/Ken Pomeroy numbers. UNLV for example was 22nd in Sagarin and 25th in the RPI which is correlative to a No. 5 or No. 6 seed rather than No. 8. The Rebels drew No. 9 Illinois in the first round with the winner taking on Kansas – assuming the Jayhawks beat Boston U.

As far as marquee victories, Vandy caught North Carolina early in the season and slipped pasted Marquette and Kentucky at home. Richmond was strong on both ends of the floor – rated among the top 50 nationally in a host of efficiency categories. Colorado State really struggled down the stretch; a shell of the team that looked like a serious contender in the Mountain West Conference in January. The Rams hung tough with San Diego State and BYU early, while winning on the road at UNLV and at home against New Mexico, the four MWC heavyweights. But this team collapsed when it mattered most, losing five of their last six games. And we can look back over the past two full months and see only two Colorado State wins by enough to cover this pointspread. Even when the Rams win, they don’t often win by margin.

Missouri simply doesn’t play well against opposing teams that commit to playing defense. Against the top five defensive teams in the Big XII in terms of efficiency (Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Kansas State), the Tigers went 2-6. Also consider Missouri was only 9-9 vs. conference teams this season. The offense during those games was still present, though not nearly as potent. A majority of the time, Missouri made average offensive teams look outstanding. Simply put, the inability to get stops on a consistent basis kept this team from achieving its goals. Cincinnati struggled to score at times, but the Bearcats can lock down on the defensive end. Their 89.9 ppp allowed was right in line with Kansas, Texas and Texas A&M – three teams Missouri failed to beat in five tries this season.

Bucknell played three power conference teams; 68-52 loss at Villanova, 72-61 loss at Marquette and an 84-80 loss at Boston College. They also posted wins over LaSalle and Richmond. But as the season progressed, Ben Howland’s group started to come together and it resulted in a 13-5 PAC-10 record and the top defensive efficiency rating (95.7 ppp) in league play. They bowed out in the first round of the PAC-10 Tournament, but looked the part for much of the back half of the campaign. : Florida skyrocketed to a No. 2 seed after winning 10 of 12 to close the year. The Gators are a well-balanced team that controls tempo. In games with a lead, we’ve seen the pace slow down to a crawl. Florida struggled to score at times but started to show signs of life on offense the final month of the season (76 ppg last five). Santa Barbara is an experience bunch (as many as seven upperclassmen play) that lost to Ohio State, 68-51, in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The Gauchos struggled during conference play (8-8) but got hot at the end. They played two NCAA Tournament teams; a 90-64 loss to San Diego State and 68-62 road win at UNLV. UCSB fits a strong profile of a team not likely to be intimidated by the bright lights. A concern however will be how they handle the long trip to Florida.

Kentucky’s body of work when reevaluated looks pretty strong with wins over Washington, Notre Dame, Florida (twice) and Louisville. They also got better as the season progressed; a good sign for such a young team. There were slip-ups on the road and emotional letdowns, but when Calipari asked for more, he got it, especially in the SEC Tournament where they were dominant. Defense was the key down the stretch (61.6 ppg allowed last six games) and something that should propel them past Princeton. The Tigers beat Harvard on a dramatic last second shot to win the Ivy League title in a play-in game. Princeton plays much faster than past years and averaged over a point per possession (104.9) for the first time since 2005. They didn’t however step up in class a lot; 87-60 loss at Duke the only comparison to Kentucky.
