First Round NIT Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fairway Jay presents his thoughts and insight for tonight’s opening tournament action.

A record 11 teams enter the NCAA Tournament with a win percentage of less than .600. I feel that the NCAA Tournament is at its best with the current format and field, as expanding to 96 teams will bring more modest teams into the Big Dance. Isn’t that what the NIT, CBI and CIT offer? A chance for more teams to play in a postseason tournament, but not the top 20% of teams in the nation?  Reward the best from each conference and the remaining quality teams and keep the NCAA Tournament as is – the greatest sporting event in the world.

First Round NIT

Dayton at College of Charleston -5.5 O/U 142.5
Big move upward on the total as College of Charleston plays the defending NIT champion Dayton Flyers. Charleston lost the Southern League championship game after winning the regular season title, but don’t be deterred thinking they will be disappointed Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Wofford vs. BYU

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southeast Region
Denver, Colo., Thursday, 4:15 pm PT
No. 14 Wofford vs. No. 3 BYU -8 O/U 147
Rob Veno Power Ratings: BYU -6

Quick Take: BYU has been through more in the past two weeks than teams endure throughout an entire season. What we know is even without Brandon Davies, the Cougars still have talent and an explosive offense. But they are clearly not the same team. What they lost was a high percentage offensive player with gets to the free throw line and rebounds – three attributes needed for postseason success. The Cougars’ 64- and 54-point efforts against New Mexico and San Diego State were in such stark contrast to how they were with Davies that it is simply too hard to ignore.

But they key to handicapping their matchup against Wofford is to remember this is a one-game scenario. Don’t worry about BYU’s potential second round game against St. John’s or Gonzaga. The Cougars play at a favorable location against an east coast team that Read more

Los Angeles pk +115 at Seattle
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Seattle Sounders come into this game pretty banged up. They lost starting midfielders Brad Evans and Steve Zakuani to injuries in their exhibition win over the Rapids last week. Also, forwards Mike Fucito and Nate Jaqua are both out. They did not have that good of an exhibition season and once again had troubles scoring goals.

The Galaxy has had the Sounders number with an all-time record of 4-1-1; 2-0-1 at Qwest Field including a 4-0 win last season. The Galaxy did lose their best player with Edson Buddle leaving in the offseason to try his hand in Germany, but replacements Juan Pablo Angel (formerly of New York) and Chad Barrett (Toronto FC) should be able to fill in nicely. With Landon Donovan and David Beckham serving up crosses, both players could be primed for big years. Defender Frankie Hejduk also arrived to supplement a defense that allowed the second-fewest goals (26) in the league last season, behind Real Salt Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Morehead vs. Louisville

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southwest Region
Denver, Colo., Thursday, 10:40 am PT
No. 13 Morehead State vs. No. 4 Louisville -9.5 O/U 131.5
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Louisville -8.5

Quick Take: Morehead State makes its third straight postseason appearance (second NCAA). After winning the play-in game in 2009, the Eagles faced Louisville in a No. 1 vs. No. 16 matchup and lost 74-54. They also played during the regular season that year with Louisville winning at home, 79-41. MSU has a legitimate post presence in Kenneth Faried, who will draw the attention of Cardinal defenders.

Morehead has other weapons but if they are going to compete in this game, they’ll have to do it on the defensive end of the floor. Expect the Eagles to play at a slow pace and try to shorten the game. Louisville really changed its identity the last third of the season. The Cardinals committed to defense and held their final eight opponents to 61 ppg (two games went to OT). They sacrificed some offense in the process Read more

Luck of the draw or lack thereof a big factor for tournament teams

03.15.2011     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting article from New York Times columnist and stat guru Nate Silver breaking down the luck factor of the NCAA Tournament. According to Silver’s study, UNLV, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Washington received the "unluckiest draws" while Florida, San Diego State, Pittsburgh and Kansas earned the "luckiest draws". Silver uses various formulas to uncover where teams should be seeded based on their RPI/Sagarin/Ken Pomeroy numbers. UNLV for example was 22nd in Sagarin and 25th in the RPI which is correlative to a No. 5 or No. 6 seed rather than No. 8. The Rebels drew No. 9 Illinois in the first round with the winner taking on Kansas – assuming the Jayhawks beat Boston U.

March Madness Betting Matchup: Richmond vs. Vanderbilt

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southwest Region
Denver, Colo., Thursday, 1:10 pm PT
No. 12 Richmond vs. No. 5 Vanderbilt -2.5 O/U 135
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Vanderbilt pk

Quick Take: We’ve got some concerns about Vanderbilt, especially when asked to play comparable competition. With an opportunity to make a late season push, the Commodores lost to Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida (twice) with only one of the four games taking play in a true road setting. As far as marquee victories, Vandy caught North Carolina early in the season and slipped pasted Marquette and Kentucky at home. Richmond was strong on both ends of the floor – rated among the top 50 nationally in a host of efficiency categories. They lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of last year’s Big Dance and have wins over tournament entrants Purdue, VCU and Temple. They did have trouble handling more athletic teams and Vanderbilt looks to be the most capable offense the Spiders will have faced this season. VU’s Jeffery Read more

NIT Free Betting Pick: Fairfield at Colorado State

NIT First Round
Fairfield +6.5 at Colorado State O/U 128
Recommendation: Fairfield

Colorado State really struggled down the stretch; a shell of the team that looked like a serious contender in the Mountain West Conference in January. The Rams hung tough with San Diego State and BYU early, while winning on the road at UNLV and at home against New Mexico, the four MWC heavyweights. But this team collapsed when it mattered most, losing five of their last six games. And we can look back over the past two full months and see only two Colorado State wins by enough to cover this pointspread. Even when the Rams win, they don’t often win by margin.

Fairfield was the best team in the MAAC this year, but they got blitzed in the first half of their conference tournament semi-final game against St Peters, trailing 40-15 at the break on their own home court. This is a deep, veteran squad that went 9-4 SU on the highway this season; primed to make amends for their awful first half against the Read more

March Madness Betting Matchup: Old Dominion vs. Butler

Washington, D.C., Thursday, 9:40 am PT
No. 9 Old Dominion -2 vs. No. 8 Butler O/U 122
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Old Dominion -0.5

Quick Take: While Butler failed to match last season’s success during the regular season, they still put together a decent campaign. They beat a very solid Cleveland State team three times, posted wins over Washington State and Florida State, lost by two on the road at Xavier and hung around in a loss at Duke. Keep in mind, this is a team with a lot of experience who hasn’t lost a game since February 3rd. Old Dominion put together a slightly stronger resume with wins over Xavier, Clemson, George Mason and VCU (twice). They also lost by three to Georgetown. The Monarchs have a similar feel to that of last year’s Butler team; lots of experience, tough non-conference schedule and a challenging conference slate. The one difference is that the Monarchs are not a great shooting team; 44.1% from the floor and 32.9% from Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Missouri vs. Cincinnati

Washington, D.C., Thursday, 6:50 pm PT
No. 11 Missouri vs. No. 6 Cincinnati pk O/U 137.5
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Cincinnati pk

Quick Take: Missouri simply doesn’t play well against opposing teams that commit to playing defense. Against the top five defensive teams in the Big XII in terms of efficiency (Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Kansas State), the Tigers went 2-6. Also consider Missouri was only 9-9 vs. conference teams this season. The offense during those games was still present, though not nearly as potent. A majority of the time, Missouri made average offensive teams look outstanding. Simply put, the inability to get stops on a consistent basis kept this team from achieving its goals. Cincinnati struggled to score at times, but the Bearcats can lock down on the defensive end. Their 89.9 ppp allowed was right in line with Kansas, Texas and Texas A&M – three teams Missouri failed to beat in five tries this season.  Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Bucknell vs. UConn

Washington, D.C., Thursday, 4:20 pm PT
No. 14 Bucknell vs. No. 3 UConn -10.5 O/U 132
Rob Veno Power Ratings: UConn -16.5

Quick Take: UConn incredible run through the Big East Tournament left a lot of bettors leery of how much they’ll have left in the tank for the Big Dance. Bucknell, who plays in the non-boarded Patriot League, opened as a 13-point underdog, yet the Bison have seen a majority of the action with the line now down to -10 at some shops – one of the biggest line moves of the tournament thus far. Bucknell played three power conference teams; 68-52 loss at Villanova, 72-61 loss at Marquette and an 84-80 loss at Boston College. They also posted wins over LaSalle and Richmond. This is a program on the up-swing after winning 12, 7 and 14 games the previous three seasons respectively. For the Huskies, it was an up-and-down campaign. The regular season was highlighted by wins over Kentucky and Texas but they went a mediocre 9-9 in Big East Read more

Tampa Bay, Fla., Thursday, 6:20 pm PT
No. 10 Michigan State -10 vs. No. 7 UCLA O/U 125
Rob Veno Power Ratings: UCLA -2

Quick Take: This is a matchup where the question needs to be asked, did both teams improve at all during the season? In UCLA’s case, the answer was clearly yes. The Bruins were a mess early on and couldn’t stop anyone on the defensive end of the floor. But as the season progressed, Ben Howland’s group started to come together and it resulted in a 13-5 PAC-10 record and the top defensive efficiency rating (95.7 ppp) in league play. They bowed out in the first round of the PAC-10 Tournament, but looked the part for much of the back half of the campaign. The long travel east is the logical reason for the Bruins being priced as an underdog. As for Michigan State, improvement rarely carried over from one game to the next. After starting the season 3-0, the Spartans failed to win three consecutive games the rest of the way. Of Read more

Sports betting mobile apps catching on in Las Vegas

The times they are a-changing. Las Vegas sportsbooks seem to be embracing the idea of mobile application based sports betting within the state of Nevada.

"It's a secure way to place a bet. Within seconds of logging in, it confirms your (account's) total, you select your bet and click it once," he said. "I never have to worry about collecting my winnings. I'm not sending my money overseas."

"It's never been easier for me to place a bet," he said. "I've placed bets from a bar or at home. I even made a bet on a game at a wedding this year."

"I'm not going to turn away any bet," he said. "For me, even if you win $200,000 I want you back. We learn from that bet. As we see it, it's part of our business model to learn from the pure gambler. Over the long run, we'll come out ahead."

Handicapping the NHL Western Conference playoff race

Submitted by Sammy P Sports

With such a log jam in the Western Conference, here are the standings and the remaining games for the teams on the bubble.

4 Los Angeles 83 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 8 Home, 5 Away
5 Phoenix 83 Points, 12 Games Remaining, 7 Home, 5 Away
6 Dallas 82 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 6 Home, 7 Away
7 Chicago 82 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 6 Home, 7 Away
8 Calgary 81 Points, 11 Games Remaining, 5 Home, 6 Away

9 Nashville 80 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 10 Home, 3 Away
10 Anaheim 79 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 6 Home, 7 Away
11 Minnesota 77 Points, 13 Games Remaining, 7 Home, 6 Away
12 Columbus 73 Points, 14 Games Remaining, 8 Home, 6 Away

First thing you’ll notice is the two games in hand the Flames have on the 9-12 teams. The other is the amount of home games Nashville has left. Playing 10 of their last 13 games at home, you have to think that they control their own fate here. Win your home games and get into the playoffs.

Next we have to focus on who they Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Santa Barbara vs. Florida

03.15.2011     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southeast Region
Tampa, Fla., Thursday, 3:50 pm PT
No. 15 UC Santa Barbara vs. No. 2 Florida -12.5 O/U 127.5
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Florida -10.5

Quick Take: Florida skyrocketed to a No. 2 seed after winning 10 of 12 to close the year. The Gators are a well-balanced team that controls tempo. In games with a lead, we’ve seen the pace slow down to a crawl. Florida struggled to score at times but started to show signs of life on offense the final month of the season (76 ppg last five). Santa Barbara is an experience bunch (as many as seven upperclassmen play) that lost to Ohio State, 68-51, in the first round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. The Gauchos struggled during conference play (8-8) but got hot at the end. They played two NCAA Tournament teams; a 90-64 loss to San Diego State and 68-62 road win at UNLV. UCSB fits a strong profile of a team not likely to be intimidated by the bright lights. A concern however will be how they handle the long trip to Florida. Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Princeton vs. Kentucky

East Regional
Tampa, Fla., Thursday, 11:45 am PT
No. 13 Princeton vs. No. 4 Kentucky -13 O/U 131
Rob Veno Power Ratings: Kentucky -13.5

Quick Take: Kentucky’s body of work when reevaluated looks pretty strong with wins over Washington, Notre Dame, Florida (twice) and Louisville. They also got better as the season progressed; a good sign for such a young team. There were slip-ups on the road and emotional letdowns, but when Calipari asked for more, he got it, especially in the SEC Tournament where they were dominant. Defense was the key down the stretch (61.6 ppg allowed last six games) and something that should propel them past Princeton. The Tigers beat Harvard on a dramatic last second shot to win the Ivy League title in a play-in game. Princeton plays much faster than past years and averaged over a point per possession (104.9) for the first time since 2005. They didn’t however step up in class a lot; 87-60 loss at Duke the only comparison to Kentucky. Read more
