White Sox use Cubs as example of how to throw a World Series

04.20.2011     02:04 PM     Printer Friendly
Cubs’ fans will be excited about this. The Loveable Losers haven't won a World Series title since 1908 but the streak could have been shorter had they not thrown the 1918 World Series against the Red Sox. That is what one Chicago museum is claiming based on a 1920 court deposition it uncovered. It turns out that the White Sox, who threw the 1919 World Series, got the idea from their north side neighbors. The statistics don't exactly back up the theory as Cubs' pitchers finished the series with a 1.04 ERA, but according to historians there were a couple of "suspicious plays". One of which included an at-bat by Babe Ruth, who at the time was a pitcher and not the feared hitter he would later become. When Ruth came to the plate Chicago's pitcher felt the right fielder was not playing deep enough and proceeded to wave him deeper. The right fielder didn't move and sure enough Ruth hit a triple over Read more

Donaghy talks Crawford and how some folks hate Cuban

04.20.2011     01:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Danny Crawford and the Dallas Mavericks managed to co-exist last night as the Mavs upped their record to 3-16 when Crawford has the whistle. Of course the situation allowed former ref Tim Donaghy to emerge from his hole and voice his opinion. Donaghy said the Crawford wasn't the only one in the NBA who liked to stick it to Dallas owner Mark Cuban. He also suggested that with plays now reviewable, it is harder to make biased calls, especially in the case of Crawford who has more than a few sets of eyes on him during last night's game. Lastly Donaghy pointed out the frequency of bad calls during the last two or three minutes of games. You can read the interview in its entirety right here.

"...It’s no secret that when Ed Rush was supervisor of officials, he had a hatred for Mark Cuban and Danny Crawford was one of Rush’s right-hand guys...Some guys enjoy sticking it to Mark; it’s no secret.”

“I’ve watched a couple games the last couple nights and there’s pivotal calls that are taking Read more

NHL Playoff Free Play: Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes

Detroit -120 at Phoenix O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Detroit looks to close out the series tonight in Phoenix. Since the first period of Game 1, the Red Wings have been scoring in bunches with 12 goals in eight periods. These teams have played all three games in the series over the total and last year's playoff series trended that way as well going 4-1-2 O/U. The power plays for both teams have been red hot combining to go 8 for 28 (28.6%). As a rule of thumb in NHL it is a good idea to play elimination games over the total. Teams play a little looser style knowing they need to press the issue offensively if they get down. Goalies tend to be pulled for an extra attacker in situations at the end of the game down by 1, 2, and even 3 goals when the elimination teams get in desperation mode. Going back to last season elimination games have gone over the total 17-8-2 (+8.75 units) and that is the way we’ll look to play tonight’s matchup.

MLB Early Start Free Play: Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners

Detroit (Porcello) at Seattle (Bedard) -105 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

Detroit’s Rick Porcello was a major disappointment last year after an outstanding rookie season in 2009. His ERA went up by more than a full run in 2010, and his road splits were downright ugly: 3-7 with a 5.73 ERA, .308 BA against. The Tigers are 6-14 in his last 20 road starts. Already this season, Porcello is 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA and opponents hitting a whopping .362 against him. He’ll face a Mariners offense that pounded out season highs in runs, hits and walks taken last night and expect another rough outing from this mediocre hurler.

Seattle’s Erik Bedard is no longer the prized prospect that the Mariners spent big money to acquire following his Cy Young caliber 2007 campaign. After three injury riddled seasons and a third shoulder surgery that cost him the entire 2010 season, Bedard has a long way to go to return to respectability. He’s been roughed up hard in each of his first three starts Read more

Late inning runs result in another over for ump Scott Barry

04.20.2011     09:01 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Another odd game for umpire Scott Barry with three runs through eight innings following by an eight-run ninth. He’s now 3-0 O/U on the year and has called fewer than 60% strikes. He also sports an extremely high strikeout/walk count with 35 Ks and 32 BBs in three games. In looking through the box scores, there were a lot of sub-par pitchers and offenses which likely contributed to numbers. Too small of a sample to gauge what type of ump Scott will be moving forward but at least he didn’t toss anyone from last night’s game.

NBA Handicapping: Scout breaks down Hornets vs. Lakers series

04.20.2011     08:37 AM     Printer Friendly
New Orleans at Los Angeles -11.5 O/U 187.5

Thoughts from a Western Conference scout on New Orleans' Game 1 win over Los Angeles and how he expects the rest of the series to play out.

"If you asked, 95% of Lakers fans couldn't have told you who Trey Johnson was before that game," the scout said. "Jack is obviously better than [the Lakers backups] and can give [the Hornets] great depth. You obviously drop off when Chris Paul is not off the floor. With the injury to Blake, and the insertion of Johnson though, the Hornets have a big advantage.

"[The Hornets] have two good ball handlers now," he continued. "And that's good because you don't want to stay in a half-court game with the Lakers. Now it gets to the point where the Lakers have to say this is not working and figure out a better way to guard Chris Paul."

"If you asked the majority of people they would Read more

New York desperate to rent out deserted OTB parlors

04.20.2011     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Looking to rent in New York City? Why not move into a former OTB parlor. There are over 50 scattered throughout the city. You can grab one in Chinatown for about $280K per year.

While OTB wasn't always an ideal tenant, it paid the rent on time, Mr. Guarino said. "It's hard. Who is going into business?" he said. "Stores don't go over big over here."

Wynn bails on PokerStars; Still optimistic for eventual online regulation

04.20.2011     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
A few weeks ago, Wynn Casinos partnered up with PokerStars; a move made in anticipation of legalized online gambling in the state of Nevada. But following what the poker industry has called "Black Friday" Wynn was forced to terminate their agreement. CEO Steve Wynn discussed his plans moving forward in this short interview.

Wynn: This reminds me of the Volstead Act during prohibition. It said you can't drink beer. Well, people drank beer anyway. And poker's about as American as apple pie.... The situation cries for regulation so that states can get money at a time when they need money and the federal government can get some money at a time when it could use the money. It seems like an intelligent thing to sit down and regulate.

MLB Free Play: Arizona Diamonbacks at Cincinnati Reds

Arizona (Kennedy) at Cincinnati (Arroyo) -150 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Two right-handed soft tossers tonight in Great American Ballpark has me looking to play the over between Arizona and Cincinnati. Both offenses rank at or near the top in the National League in a number of categories – most importantly OPS. Bronson Arroyo and Ian Kennedy are also fly ballers which doesn't bode well considering in 11 games in Cincinnati, there have been 34 home runs. I also am looking for a little bit of overall regression by both pitchers as last year's impressive numbers were perhaps a bit lucky based on their ability and career numbers. The Reds' bullpen has been worked rather heavy of late throwing 22.2 innings the last five games and Arizona’s late innings are always a crapshoot. This is also the second look of the season against both starters as they both enjoyed success in their respective starts last week in Arizona. Even with the weather expected to cool down, I'll look to play this game over the Read more
