NHL Playoff Betting Preview: Detroit vs. San Jose

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Conference Semifinals
No. 2 San Jose vs. No. 3 Detroit

These two teams met last season in the second round of the playoffs with San Jose winning in five games.  Four of the five went over the total while three of the four regular season matchups this year did the same.  The recent series itself has been owned by the Sharks who have won eight of the past 10.  They also own a home ice advantage that has been historically kind.

Detroit meanwhile struggled at home down the stretch going just 4-8 before beating Phoenix twice.  Not to take anything away from the Red Wings but the Coyotes weren’t prepared at all for the playoffs and probably shouldn’t have been there in the first place.  Regardless, the Wings took care of business on the strength of a sound power play: 4-of- 15 (27%). Their penalty killing however was awful as they allowed 6 goals in 18 attempts (67%).  This will play a huge role in this series as San Jose struggled with its PP Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St Louis (McClellan) -150 at Houston (Figueroa) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

Nelson Figueroa’s numbers to start the season are not an aberration.  He’s been lit up three times in four outings, giving up 31 hits and 24 runs in just 20 innings of work.  Figueroa’s 12-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio doesn’t inspire confidence.  His only good start all year came against a Padres lineup that can’t hit their way out of a wet paper bag.

This is nothing new or different for the 36 year old righty.  Figueroa has crapped out everywhere he’s been at the big league level, failing to stick with Arizona, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, New York or even here in Houston.  He’s merely keeping the seat warm for heralded hurler Jordan Lyles who is still working of things in Triple-A. Behind their second-tier starter, the Astros bullpen is anything but reliable, with four losses and five blown saves already.  And don’t forget that Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Dallas Mavericks at Portland Trail Blazers

Dallas at Portland -4 O/U 182
Recommendation: Under

We cashed a under the total winner in both Game 4 and Game 5 between these two teams and we’ll fire for the green again in Game 6. Dallas leads the series 3-2 after its 93-82 win in Game 5, but look for Portland to force a Game 7 with a win tonight at the Rose Garden.

The closeout game is usually the toughest and Portland’s preferred slower pace and patience should control the style of play tonight. Dallas has a top-tier defense and has held the Trail Blazers to less than 90 points in four of the five matchups. In fact, Dallas has only scored over 93 points in one of the five games, and while the Trail Blazers have only covered one game in the series, look for them to perform better in crunch time tonight.

Portland has been on the short end of the foul calls and head coach Nate McMillan believes his team should benefit more with their physical style inside. Dallas was able to control the boards (49-37) in Game 5 Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks

Orlando -2 at Atlanta O/U 178
Recommendation: Over

The Magic regained their offensive confidence on Tuesday night and figure to continue that tonight. Three-point shooters Ryan Anderson and Jason Richardson along with reserve JJ Reddick all had solid perimeter games while starting forward Brandon Bass contributed inside. The widespread team success with limited help from Dwight Howard (29 minutes, 1-4 FGs) bodes well for tonight. Expect the deep and playoff experienced surrounding cast to support Howard who should bounce back with much better point production. For Atlanta, their 36.2% shooting performance in Game 5 looked lackadaisical and uninterested. Have to believe head coach Larry Drew and his troops will correct the poor effort and return to the 44.7% mark they had been shooting for the series prior to Tuesday. After a quartet of consecutive “unders”, look for these teams to shoot well enough to get above the extremely low total.

NHL Playoff Betting Preview: Nashville vs. Vancouver

Western Conference Semifinals
No. 1 Vancouver vs. No. 5 Nashville

Both teams were tested in their opening round matchups; Vancouver a bit more then it had bargained for after being up 3-0 in the series against the Blackhawks.  The Canucks escaped with a Game 7 OT win; perhaps the wake-up call they needed.  Nashville should not be taken lightly as it contained some of the hottest players in the NHL during a 4-2 series win over Anaheim.

All four regular season games between these two teams were tight defensive battles that went under the total.  It is interesting to point out that in almost every matchup the Vancouver defense was in some way banged up and now that they have a healthy blueline corps and their speed may be a bit too much for Nashville to handle.  That being said, the Predators are almost 100% healthy as the return of Sullivan, Tootoo, and Erat made a huge difference against the Ducks.

Goaltending isn’t going to be an issue for either team Read more

MLB Handicapping: Can it get any worse for the Minnesota Twins?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In all reality, it is amazing that Minnesota Twins are 9-13 when you consider the current state of the roster.

Michael Cuddyer - Moved to second base because of an injury to Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Cuddyer has spent much of his career as an outfielder as well as first and third base.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka - Entered the season as the projected starting second baseman. On the DL with a broken leg.

Carl Pavano - Suffering from flu-like symptoms; start pushed back to Sunday.

Joe Nathan - Coming off Tommy John surgery. 9.82 ERA, 2 blown saves.

Joe Mauer - Only 34 at-bats. On the DL with bilateral leg weakness, viral infection.

Delmon Young - Just placed on the DL with a rib injury.

Jim Thome - Has been out since Sunday with an oblique injury. Expected to play Thursday.

Gambling.com domain purchased for $2.5 million

04.28.2011     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
On the market since December of 2010, Gambling.com was finally purchased this week by an unnamed party. The domain went for $2.5 million, a far cry from the $20 million it originally sold for prior to the UIGEA in 2005.

Liesbeth Mack-de-Boer, CSO at Sedo, said: “The high sale price paid for Gambling.com is a real confidence booster for the global domain industry and demonstrates the value gambling companies are still prepared to place on their digital assets.”

Haralabos Voulgaris talks betting on the NBA

04.28.2011     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
Cool article on professional poker player and NBA bettor Haralabos Voulgaris. He got his start with a 6.5-1 futures bet on the Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2000 NBA title.

“In life I find that people have a really tough time being honest with themselves and saying ‘boy was I ever wrong about that.’ But when you are losing money reality tends to set in. I have had a lot of really well-thought-out theories or methods that simply weren’t profitable and it is my opinion that those theories were just flat-out wrong.”

“I love totals,” he said to Pokercast. “When I’m watching the game, I love calculating if I’m on pace for the total. You really start to know which players are good for offense or defense or both more than any other way of watching basketball when you are betting the totals.”

NBA Handicapping: Atlanta, Memphis and Dallas a win away from advancing

04.28.2011     06:23 AM     Printer Friendly
Two series underdogs in the first round of the NBA Playoffs need just one win to advance to the semifinals. Orlando forced a Game 6 after crushing the Hawks on Tuesday, 101-76. The Magic are a 2-point road favorite tonight in Atlanta. The adjusted series price according to The Greek has Atlanta -135/Orlando +115. San Antonio was in a similar situation but has a bit more difficult of a time forcing a Game 6 as it needed OT to beat Memphis last night. No line yet posted for Friday's contest. Memphis is a -185 favorite to win the series; the Spurs a +165 underdog. Dallas, who has covered all five games in the series, is a game away from advancing after beating Portland 93-82 on Monday. The series shifts back to the Rose City tonight with the Trail Blazers a 4.5-point home favorite. With the home team winning the first five games, the Mavs are a -405 favorite to advance while Portland is a +325 underdog. The Miami Heat opened as a -175 series favorite over Boston (+145). The two square off in Game 1 on Sunday.
