FIFA reaches out to Interpol to stop match-fixing

05.09.2011     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
FIFA is paying Interpol $29 million (10-year deal) to help bring a stop to worldwide match-fixing. We posted a couple of links (here and here) of reported match-fixing incidents just over the past two months.

"We know about 300 matches in 20 countries where we have the suspicion that they may have manipulated.

"The matches concerned involve mainly lower-ranking leagues but it goes all the way up to national teams, Champions League matches and Europa League matches.

"The money involved for players, referees and officials amounts to €1.7m [£1.5m] but we don't know how much has been paid beyond our

MLB Handicapping Notes: 5-inning line trends

05.09.2011     12:32 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Below are some of the hottest current MLB 5-inning line streaks...

The Tampa Bay Rays are MLB’s current 5-inning Road Warriors going 10-0-1 for a nice +12.35 unit profit since April 11th.

Over their last 19 games, the Florida Marlins have gone 12-2 with five pushes.

Over their last 23 games, the Philadelphia Phillies are a staggering 19-4 Under the 5-inning total with 17 of those 23 games resulting in 3 runs or less.

Perhaps the streakiest 5-inning Team Totals squad is the Pittsburgh Pirates. They opened the season on a 9-2-1 under run. Then, the Bucs then went on a monster 16-3 over streak. Now, after this weekend’s Houston series they are back on a 3-0 under run.

If you isolate the San Diego schedule to just their home games, you'll find them to be extremely streaky as well. The Padres opened the year 10-2 run to the under at Petco Park; they are currently on 7-2 over Read more

MLB Handicapper Game Preview: Oakland at Texas

Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Oakland (Cahill) +110 at Texas (Wilson) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Oakland

The Oakland A’s are now on a six game “under” streak where every one of the game results totaled seven runs or less. What makes the current run even stronger is the fact that those games were played against a pair of potent American League offenses, Cleveland and Kansas City. Tonight Oakland will send right hander Trevor Cahill to the mound in Arlington where Texas and its MLB leading .513 home slugging percentage awaits. Neither the Rangers nor this ballpark have been troublesome for Cahill during his young career as he’s posted spectacular numbers: 3 starts, 2-0, 0.87 ERA and 0.68 WHIP. He’s held the powerful Rangers to an incredible .104 batting average, .149 slugging percentage and .189 on-base percentage.  In his 10 overall starts versus Texas, Cahill is 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Just 10 days ago, he threw seven shutout innings at Texas en-route to a 3-1 victory. Read more

Bankrupt off-track betting parlor run by politicians

05.09.2011     11:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Imagine your favorite sportsbook was run by someone who’s previous job was commercial airline pilot. It probably wouldn't be around long, would it? It is that type of mismatch why off-track betting parlors are dropping like flies. According to this article, a majority of the Suffolk OTB board of directors is made up of local politicians. This rather than say people with experience in the horse racing industry. To no surprise, Suffolk OTB is bankrupt and no longer open. Local resident BB Morris held up a sign in protest asking passersby, "Where are you going to bet the Kentucky Derby next year?" We feel ya BB.

“I come here every day,” Mr. Morris said the day before the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby, “I’m going to miss it. They ought to keep it open. It’s just good entertainment and a way to meet to meet friends. I know everybody that comes in here. All the guys in the Chinese restaurant (next to OTB) know me. All the guys in Dunkin’ Donuts know me.

“Now that I’ll have nowhere to go, it will be miserable.”

MLB Betting Free Play: San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers

Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
San Diego (Latos) at Milwaukee (Greinke) -135 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Milwaukee

It will probably take another three or four starts before Milwaukee’s Zach Greinke is at full strength following a rib injury that kept him sidelined for a month. But there are a couple indicators that suggest he’ll be good to go tonight against San Diego. Greinke lasted only four innings and allowed four earned runs in his debut but a couple of errors and a prolonged first inning (32 pitches) masked what in reality wasn’t that bad of an outing. He threw only 54 pitches his next four innings and finished the day with six strikeouts.

"For the most part I pitched decent," said Greinke, who left after 86 pitches. "I had a couple of really bad at-bats [in the fourth] and in the end it made it look worse."

Tonight mark’s his home debut and the Brewers are Read more

Betting and attendance numbers were up for last Saturday's Kentucky Derby. The handle figure for the entire 13-race card was up 1.5% ($165.2 million) while attendance (164,858) hit the third-highest mark of all-time. The on-track handle jumped 9% over 2010's figure. No bettor hit the pick six or Super High Five (first five finishers of the Derby).

No time like the present to regulate online gambling in the United States

05.09.2011     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Frank Fahrenkopf, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association, wrote a blog on how the time is right for the United States Government to step in and regulate online gambling.

With a few minor changes in existing legislation, Congress can create thousands of new jobs almost immediately and raise at least $20 billion in new tax revenues over the next decade.

By passing legislation that removes the current ambiguity of UIGEA and provides a strong regulatory framework that preserves states’ rights to determine what gambling options are available to their residents, Congress can eliminate the problems presented by inconsistent regulatory and legal practices.

Investors buy Area 51s; New stadium and hope for MLB in Vegas

In conjunction with the new Las Vegas National Sports Center, the Las Vegas 51s have been sold to a group of investors who are seeking to bring pro sports to the city. The 51s currently play as Cashman Field (9,300) but the owner of Silver State Baseball LLC wants to build a new stadium close to Mandalay Bay, on the other side of I-15.

Sportingbet eager to join U.S. after regulation

05.09.2011     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Interview with Sportingbet CEO Andy McIver. According to McIver, he wants to join the U.S. market so long as everything is regulated. Despite being located in Britain, most of Sportingbet's business comes from Australia, Greece, Turkey and Spain.

'It's always a bit of an anti-climax when something like that is finally settled, but it was a no-brainer that we should pay the money and move on,' he says.

'If we hadn't done, people would have always thought that there was some reason why. And it paves the way for the future. We'd love to go back into the US if it opened up again, but we'd only go back if it was fully regulated.'

MLB Handicapping: Introducing the worst offense in baseball

I provided a free play winner with analysis on Saturday with the Arizona Diamondbacks over the San Diego Padres, 6-0. Check out these alarming and awful offensive stats for the Padres, whose starting lineup Saturday included the following batting averages, excluding the pitcher.

As a team, the Padres are hitting an MLB worst .216 with a NL worst .617 OPS and 275 strikeouts; second most in the Majors. The Padres have hit just 20 home runs through 33 games and have produced a league-low 356 runs and .321 slugging pct. At 13-20, San Diego has the worst record in the National League and is just 6-14 at Petco Park this season.

Through San Diego's first 25 games, the Padres were hitting just .172 with runners in scoring position (RISP). Now consider that the Padres were leading the league in stolen bases entering Read more

Apparently panhandling is Option B for online poker players

05.09.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Here's one that'll make you chuckle. As a result of the current online poker ban for U.S. citizens, one Las Vegas resident has taken to the streets. Literally. With nearly all of his net worth ($9,000) currently tied up online with no way of cashing out, the gentleman has resorted to panhandling with a guitar for donations. You are probably thinking to yourself, if this guy can live off of online poker then he surely must be capable of finding employment, no? We thought the same thing until we read what he had to say...

"Now that they've taken my money, I can't do anything else. I can't even go play live (poker). And I moved to Vegas just in case they did something with online poker, so at least I could still play live," he said. "Without poker," he said, "I'm gonna make music my life, and making music my life means coming out here and playing for a bit of spare change."

Police raid Absolute Poker headquarters

05.09.2011     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
As many as six different locations associated with Absolute Poker were raided by Costa Rican police earlier this morning. Reports indicate that Absolute Poker is nearing having to file for bankruptcy. The company that owns AP, Bianca Gaming, is $2.75 million behind in employee paychecks.

PokerStars was also raided but due to no findings, it remains "business as usual."

“Pokerstars continues to operate the world’s largest poker room, business as usual. “It is true the OIJ is currently at the Pokerstars Costa Rican office and has sent employees home temporarily, but employees will be able to return in a few hours,” he posted earlier today.
