Phillies goes over the total in four straight at home

05.26.2011     02:50 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cold weather, the National League's best pitching staff and a struggling offense are enough reasons for the betting market to keep the baseline totals for Philadelphia's home games at 7-7.5. Heading into their most recent four-game series against Cincinnati, the Phillies were 10-12-3 O/U at Citizens Bank Park. But all four games against Reds went over the total as the game time temperatures ranged from 77 to 87 degrees. All told, the two teams produced 45 runs, 13 doubles and 12 home runs. Note that Wednesday's game went 19 innings and produced three runs in extra frame. Had the game ended in regulation, it would have been a push a 7.

Prior to the series against Cincinnati, the average temperature for their previous 25 home games was around 60 degrees with only two topping the 70 degree mark. This recent barrage of overs was certainly helped by the Reds having one of the better offenses in the National League, but with warmer weather on the horizon and Philadelphia's lineup bolstered some by the return of Chase Utley, even Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: A look at quarterbacks in the Big Ten

Our conference quarterback coverage continues. Click links for SEC, PAC-12 and Big XII. Eight of the 12 Big Ten teams have starting experience at the quarterback position.

Illinois
– Nathan Scheelhaase is back after gutting out his freshman season. There were times last season where Scheelhaase looked good (see four TDs against Purdue) and others where the offense was specifically geared so he wouldn’t have to throw the football. Despite his inexperience, Illinois averaged nearly 400 ypg of offense in Big Ten play. Read more

Baseball Betting: Numbers for Humber suggest regression

05.26.2011     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Humber) at Toronto (Morrow) -145 O/U 8

Prior to this season, former first round draft pick Phil Humber hadn’t amounted to much. He threw over 600 innings in the minors and posted an unimpressive 4.48 ERA. But Humber has been outstanding thus far in his first season as a full-time starter (3.10 ERA, 52.1 IP, 37 hits, 3 home runs). We do however have some concerns. Humber doesn't have much of a pedigree, shows below average velocity (90.7 MPH fastball avg.) and some of his numbers appear to be a tad lucky. His .211 BAbip is abnormally low which coincides with a .191 BA against. He’s also benefited from a favorable slate of opponents. With the exception of the Yankees, who he did shut down, Humber has faced only one of the top seven teams in the American League based on team OPS. Tonight he steps up in class some against a solid Toronto Blue Jays offense that ranks second in home runs (52) and fourth in OPS (.740) in the American League.

Only eight NBA teams have ever won a series after trailing 3-1

05.26.2011     08:34 AM     Printer Friendly
Quick list of NBA teams that have rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to win a series. There have been only eight with the most recent coming in 2006 when Phoenix beat the Lakers in 7. The Thunder missed their chance with a loss to Dallas last night. The Bulls' quest to win three straight starts tonight as 3-point home chalk over Miami. Six of the eight teams to accomplish the feat were at home for Game 5.

Of course they bet on mice racing in Iowa

05.26.2011     08:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gentleman 1: "You wanna go down to the Bucktail Lodge tonight?"

Gentleman 2: "Isn't that the place where you can bet on mice racing?"

Gentleman 1: "Sure is. I got a hot tip on a real runner named Fred who went 32-3 on the Nebraska circuit last year."

Gentleman 2: "Count me in."

"Mouse racing is entertainment, entertainment for family, friends and it’s something to do on a Sunday afternoon," said Scott Beach, owner of Bucktail Lodge.

"It was to make some money for the bar and have some fun," said Jan Beach, co-owner of the Bucktail Lodge.

"No we don't consider it gambling at all, it's just people having fun," said Jan.  "The money goes back to them.  If you win, you win; if you lose, you lose."

Illinois pushing hard for more gaming, Emanuel wants casino in Chicago

05.26.2011     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
Illinois joins the long list of states looking for ways to expand its gaming. The Illinois State Fair wants to add slot machines while horse racing tracks are petitioning for a "racino" environment. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking for a casino within the city limits to help offset a $600 million deficit.

"We're not going to be the Las Vegas of the Midwest," Quinn said last week. "I don't want that to happen and I don't think the people want that to happen."

“We have a casino in Chicago. It just happens to be in Hammond, Indiana. And we’re losing that revenue. And I don’t think when we’re facing a $600 million deficit that we can deny that any longer,” Emanuel said.

Bettors question play at end of Oklahoma City-Dallas Game 5

05.26.2011     07:08 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting ending to the Oklahoma City/Dallas game last night for bettors. Those backing the Thunder, though it got dicey, cashed +6 and +6.5 (you should have had +6.5!) with the 100-96 final. But there is some debate in the betting community about the last play, and those who bet the Maverick may have a beef.

With time running out Jason Terry got the ball on a run-out and went in for a breakaway dunk with the score 100-96. He makes the dunk and the TV scoreboard shows 102-06 but apparently the refs disallowed the basket making the final margin four points.

If you watch the video (fast forward to 4:10), based on the ESPN clock, the basket should have counted. The basket’s "red light", which is a more official measure, makes it a bit closer. We'll let you be the judge.
