Baseball Handicapping: Tough seven-game road trip for San Francisco Giants

05.27.2011     12:43 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Erin Rynning pointed out on Friday's Sportsmemo Radio Show that the San Francisco Giants have two tough road series against Milwaukee and St. Louis starting Friday night. The Giants were dealt a huge blow when catcher Buster Posey broke his leg (reports came out today that there is a chance he could return). Posey of course is one of San Fran's few offensive threats. Also note that the Giants have managed a strong 27-22 record despite being outscored on the season. They are the only team in baseball with a winning record to have a negative run differential (-0.1) and show a Pythagorean Win-Loss mark of 24-25.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore at Oakland

Baltimore (Tillman) +150 at Oakland (Gonzalez) O/U 7
Recommendation: Baltimore

The betting markets are in love with Gio Gonzalez. Oakland’s prized young lefty is certainly worthy of some attention. He won 15 games and struck out 171 batters with a 3.23 ERA in his first full year as a starter in 2010. This year, Gonzalez has even better numbers: 56 strikeouts in 57 innings and a 2.20 ERA through his first nine starts. No surprise that Gonzalez is attracting plenty of wiseguy support.

That being said, the A’s are just 3-4 in Gonzalez’s last seven starts – his supporters aren’t making money right now. Oakland’s problem, as usual, is that they haven’t been able to offer Gonzalez much run support. The A’s are in last place in the West because they have the third lowest run production in the AL. Things have gotten worse during their current 2-7 skid. This anemic A’s lineup has produced one run or less five times during this span.

Philadelphia (Oswalt) -140 at New York (Capuano) O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

The Philadelphia Phillies (31-19) travel to Citi Field to take on division rival New York (23-26) for Friday. The Mets have scored more than three runs just once in their past nine games and must now face Roy Oswalt, who has posted some solid stats on the season with a 2.77 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and .245 BAA. Oswalt dominated in two other road starts at pitcher friendly parks, allowing just one total run in 11 innings at St. Louis and San Diego. The Mets are hitting just .246 and don’t figure to generate many scoring opportunities.

The Phillies have the best record in the National League and have gone 4-2 against the Mets at home this season. Philadelphia has the best pitching staff in the NL with a 3.04 ERA and .298 OBS while leading the NL in strikeouts with 418. The bullpen has been excellent to support the sensational starting staff, as Phillies relievers have a 2.64 ERA and .217 BAA.

MLB Betting Alert: Lincecum workload at max capacity

05.27.2011     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
San Francisco (Lincecum) at Milwaukee (Marcum) -110 O/U 6.5

San Francisco's Tim Lincecum often defies logic when it comes to workload and pitch counts. We went back and tried to find signs of weakness after large chunks of innings and pitches thrown but really couldn't find much. But over Lincecum's last four games, he's tossed a remarkable 491 pitches (127, 113, 118 and 133); the most of any four-game stretch in his career. Also note that last season, Lincecum threw fewer than 100 pitches in 10 starts but has yet to do so in 2011. Last time out, Lincecum threw a complete game shutout that required 133 pitches (second most in his career). An 85% Lincecum is typically good enough to dominate but his workload is worthy of mention.

MLB Betting Alert: Weather expected to warm up at Wrigley this weekend

05.27.2011     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
Note that the weather in Chicago is expected to heat up this weekend – by Windy City standards. Today's temps are expected to be in the low 60's with the wind blowing in (total of 7.5) but the wind is expected to shift starting Saturday night. Chicago has been a strong over team this season at 29-19 O/U. At Wrigley they are 16-9 O/U. The make-up of this team screams over-the-total with a solid offense, thin starting rotation, shaky bullpen and horrific defense. The Cubs have made 38 errors in 48 games (third most in the NL) and have already committed two or more errors in eight games. Chicago opens up a three-game home set against Pittsburgh this afternoon and will remain at Wrigley for three games against Houston. Note that the White Sox don't return home until next Friday.

NBA Betting Tips: A history of overtime in the playoffs

05.27.2011     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
Some interesting stats regarding NBA Playoff games that go to overtime. It has happened six times this postseason.

In the 158 applicable cases (series deciding games not included), the winning team in overtime is 60-98 (.380 W Pct) in the series next game.   However the numbers show that an overtime victory, can statistically give a team a slight boost when it comes to winning the series; with 58% of overtime winners going on to win the series (72% since 2005).

The average margin of victory in an NBA playoff overtime game is 4.5 points.  On 32 occasions the margin of victory was 1 point (happened last in 2009 – Boston vs. Chicago 128-127).  The greatest margin of victory in the playoffs is 11 points.

Home court advantage doesn’t play much of a role in terms of who wins playoff overtime games.  The home team has a record of 103-98 (.512 W Pct) Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Tomlin due for a regression moving forward

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell Josh Tomlin – No question, Tomlin has been crucial for the Indians early this season with a 6-1 record and gaudy 2.41 ERA. Life is good for the Tribe and Tomlin in particular. But if you follow these pages, you know that I like to sell high and this certainly seems like the high water mark for Tomlin. A close examination of the numbers reveals he is long overdue for a regression.

Tomlin is already 26-years-old and working in just his second full season in the bigs. He was decent for the Indians last season in 12 starts with a 4.56 ERA but I noticed that his velocity is actually slightly down from last year. Couple that with a beyond remarkable .175 BAbip and only 30 punch outs in nearly 60 innings of work and it is easy to predict things will start to even out. In addition, he’s stranded base runners at over an 85% clip. Everything has gone right for Tomlin this season, but I expect his ERA to return to the 4.50 range moving forward.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Latos looks to be in fine form

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy Mat Latos – Latos burst on the scene last year after starting 10 games for the Padres in 2009. The power right-hander was simply dominating much of the campaign with a 2.92 ERA including an amazing 10-1 stretch. His peripheral numbers were strong as well with 189 strikeouts to just 50 walks in 185 innings of work.

The workload however was a real issue and the Padres skipped his turn a few times in order to preserve his arm. But in the heat of a pennant race, the Padres needed high leverage innings from their ace and unfortunately, he faded down the stretch (1-5, 5.65 ERA in September and October). Questions lingered moving forward to 2011 on how Latos would respond to the hefty workload. Once spring training hit, it was clear he wasn’t responding well. Latos finally admitted he was having soreness in his shoulder and the Padres were forced to place him on disabled list. He returned in mid-April, but his 2010 form was still missing. His velocity was down, and the overall crispness of his Read more

Betting interest for boxing dwindles in Las Vegas

05.27.2011     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
Not only has the public's interest in boxing dwindled over the last decade but so has the desire to bet a few bucks. It appears that when it comes to betting volume, MMA is simply crushing boxing among the Las Vegas sportsbooks.

"The action has gone up like you wouldn't believe in UFC. On these Saturdays when we have these UFC cards, we do massive handles," said Mike Colbert, sports book director of Cantor Gaming. "You're talking to an absolute boxing guy here and I will be the first to admit that UFC is more popular betting-wise. I never thought I'd see the day where it's this popular."
