Women's World Cup offers betting opportunities

06.22.2011     11:56 AM     Printer Friendly
The 2011 Women's World Cup is set to get underway this Sunday in Germany. For bettors that means mid-summer betting opportunities. Odds should be available at most major sportsbooks. Wynn sportsbook director Johnny Avello says host Germany is the favorite at 6-5. Avello is known for creating odd on secondary events (he correctly priced Miss California as the betting favorite to win Miss USA). Avello said that the United States is one of three or four true contenders and will be a 2-3 favorite over North Korea in the opener. For those looking for a longshot, Equatorial Guinea is a 20-1 underdog to win just one game (250-1 to win the Cup).

The Associated Press reported that the American Gaming Association spent nearly $575K lobbying the government during the first quarter.  The amount was a sizable increase from the previous fourth quarter and year.

A breakdown of the numbers for this year’s World Series of Poker courtesy of Bluff Magazine. There were concerns that attendance at the event would be down, but according to carplayer.com, that hasn’t been the case.

On Friday, June 18, the WSOP sat 5,946 players for the various poker tournaments scheduled that day – the largest number of players ever entered on a single day in live poker history.

Traveler's Championship at River Highlands Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As its name implies, the TPC at River Highlands sits atop a ridge overlooking the Connecticut River, just 14 miles South of Hartford and 90 minutes from Boston. The par 70 layout features fairway’s that meander through the gorgeous rolling estate with the signature TPC mounding and natural amphitheaters provide unobstructed views.   Holes number 15-17 play around a four-acre lake, known as the ‘Golden Triangle’.  Banked by large hills, the closing stretch of holes offers fans great views for the exciting finish.

The 296-yard 15th is a fun, driveable risk/reward par 4 followed by no. 16, a dramatic par 3 over water.  Holes no. 4 and no. 17 ranked as two of the top 50 toughest holes on Tour last year, and the closing two holes are two of the strongest par 4’s that require accurate drives with water running along the entire right side of the signature hole no. 17.

Hollywood A-listers involved in high stakes poker, lawsuit

06.22.2011     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Guys like Tobey Maguire and Ben Affleck aren't exactly hot topics of discussion at Sportsmemo, unless of course they are involved in secret high stakes poker games and multi-million dollar lawsuits. The details are right out of a movie with uncollected debt, a Ponzi scheme, and of course Paris Hilton's sex tape partner. It seems somewhat hoaxy (most articles that cite Star Magazine are) but here's the court order for Mr. Maguire.

"That means he could have made up to $30 to $40 million from these games," the whistle-blowing card shark predicted.

"As part of the scheme, funds invested in (Ruderman) were transferred to persons such as Defendant (Maguire), who received the funds on account of Ruderman's Read more

NCAAF Betting: Louisville faced with tough schedule, lack of experience

06.22.2011     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Could be tough sledding for Louisville in 2011 with the loss of 25 seniors. The Cardinals rank at or near the bottom nationally in both experience and returning offensive line starts. Offensive coordinator Mike Sanford has already professed that he may have to use true freshmen on the o-line due to depth issues (only one returning starter). Overall, they return a Big East-low nine starters, play only three league home games and travel to Kentucky and North Carolina during the non-conference.

MLB Handicapping Notes: Porcello shows positives during bullpen work

06.22.2011     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Porcello) at Los Angeles (Lilly) -105 O/U 7.5

Over the last month, Detroit's Rick Porcello has seen his ERA shoot up a full run after some shaky outings including a 3-inning, 6-earned run performance in Colorado last time out. Overall, Porcello has been solid this season with a 4.18 ERA but he can be a tough sell to bettors with his low strikeout rate (43 in 75.1 IP). That could perhaps change as Porcello found a flaw in his mechanics and added some extra velocity during a recent bullpen session. He should be sitting on a solid performance this afternoon in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

"I wasn't getting extension with my arm," Porcello said. "It's easy to see, but it's hard to explain. I'm not getting a good follow-through. I was just releasing the ball instead of having a long arm path all the way Read more
