NCAAF Handicapping: Kentucky Wildcats Over 6 Wins

Kentucky Wildcats
Recommendation: Over 6 wins

I’m a big fan of Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips and what he did in his first year as head coach after taking over for Rich Brooks. The level of talent and speed has risen over the last five years and the pieces are in place for this team to continue to compete in the SEC. Keep in mind that over the last three seasons, Kentucky has been forced to reload with 11, 10 and 11 returning starters respectively. In 2006 and 2007, with 15 returning starters back, the Wildcats posted 8-5 records. This season they welcome back 16.

The big question entering 2011 is how will Kentucky replace its skill position talent? Derrick Locke and Randall Cobb were special players who would start for any team in the SEC. And quarterback Mike Hartline quietly became one of the better signal callers in the conference last season. I see this year’s projected starter Morgan Newton as a wild card with potential. His transition to full-time starter should come Read more

Remember the Delaware bettor who botched a monster NFL parlay card?

07.29.2011     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
A look back at the Delaware bettor who won 14 of the first 15 games on an NFL parlay card with an opportunity to cash $100K. He reportedly didn't bet but a "few thousand" on the other side as a hedge which of course ended up winning. Delaware is one of a few states to offer parlay cards. By law, bettors must wager on a minimum of three teams.

"Everybody kept calling into radio shows saying, 'Why doesn't he just go to Vegas and play the other side?' " Gentile said. "But he didn't do it."

NCAAF Betting Notes: Purdue may utilize quarterback tandem

07.29.2011     12:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Decimated by injuries last season, Purdue’s passing game suffered a massive decline in production as the Boilermakers ranked 112th in passing yards per game. This season, everyone is reportedly healthy and head coach Danny Hope hinted that he may use a two-quarterback system with Rob Henry and Robert Marve. Henry was effective with his feet and led the team in rushing (547 yards) while Marve performed admirably prior to a torn ACL (67.7% completions). Purdue has an opportunity to start the season strong with games against MTSU, Rice, SE Missouri, a bye week, and then Notre Dame and Minnesota at home.

"We have a plan to utilize the two-quarterback system," Hope said. "That won't be the bread and butter of our offense, but it's an opportunity to get two of our top players on the field."

"A lot is going to depend

The Greek's exit leaves US sports bettors with fewer options

07.29.2011     11:01 AM     Printer Friendly
Chad Millman's recent blog talks about The Greek's exit from the US market and the dwindling number of sportsbooks who offer post-up opportunities for American players.

"I thought we would have legalized sports betting in the next couple of years," a wiseguy told me. "Now it doesn't look like it is close."

"You get to a point in your life where it's not worth it anymore," says one wiseguy I spoke to. "Spiro has been betting for years and booking for years, he is a grandpa now. He doesn't need the headache anymore. He doesn't need the money."

"I make it look like I am routing them through an IP address in Canada. I'm surprised someone hasn't set up a business like that yet."

NCAAF Betting Notes: Idaho has defense to compete in WAC

07.29.2011     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Idaho doesn't exactly have a strong defensive pedigree but that could change in 2011. Head coach Robb Akey has a defensive background and has seen his squad steadily improve over the last three seasons. In 2008, with four starters back, Idaho allowed 42.8 pg and recorded only 10 sacks but saw gains in 2009 (36.0 ppg, 15 sacks) and 2010 (28.3 ppg, 31 sacks). This season, with seven starters back, the unit expects to be the strength of the team.

“The size in those front guys helps,” Akey said. “We’re going to have two guys who are 300 pounds and can run in the middle of our defensive line. In my first year, we couldn’t put two guys together who weighed 300 pounds. That’s a great improvement.”

There are some concerns with depth as leading tackler and 1st team all-WAC linebacker Robert Siavii is out for the season with a knee injury as is Read more

NCAAF Betting Update: North Carolina promotes DC to serve as head coach

07.29.2011     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

North Carolina announced that Everett Withers will serve as interim head coach after Butch Davis was fired earlier this week. Withers served as the Tar Heels' defensive coordinator since 2008 (defensive ppg allowed: 21.2, 17.1, 23.2). Prior to Chapel Hill he served the same post at Minnesota and was a secondary coach for the Tennessee Titans. Davis was let go nine days before the first practice. Following his termination, UNC's athletics director Dick Baddour resigned.  The school will have a hearing with the NCAA Committee of Infractions in late October.

NFL Handicapping: Carolina offense on the rise, Oakland could decline

07.29.2011     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
Nice breakdown of two NFL teams expected to improve and decline on offense this season. History tells us that Carolina will score more points -- regardless of who is under center. No team in the Live Ball Era (1978-present) has scored fewer than 200 points in back-to-back seasons. Oakland's offense was unique last year in that it doubled its offensive output from 2009. Dating back to 1984, only 15 teams improved their point total by at least 140 points – and most saw a decline the following season.

MLB Betting Notes: Wang returns for Nats after two-year absence

07.29.2011     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
New York (Gee) -115 at Washington (Wang) O/U 9

Have arm will travel. Chien-Ming Wang makes his MLB return after the Washington Nationals took a shot and signed the 31-year-old last season. Wang last pitched in the majors back in 2009 for the Yankees before being shutdown due to shoulder problems. He made six rehab starts with a 3.14 ERA, 17 Ks, 4 BBs in 29 innings. Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said he'll be on an 80-90 pitch count tonight against New York.

“His first start up here after a couple years, he’s going to be a little more hyped,” Johnson said. “It’s going to take some more out of him.”

“Rather than rearrange everything, he’ll be kind of insurance,” Johnson said. “The almighty trading deadline is coming. We may do something there.
