NCAAF Betting Notes: Michigan will still utilize Robinson as a runner

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Michigan at Michigan -14.5 O/U 61

Despite changing to a pro-style offense, the Michigan Wolverines would be silly not to utilize quarterback Denard Robinson's running ability at least somewhat, right? According to offensive coordinator Al Borges, while Robinson won't be asked to run the ball nearly 20 times per game like last season, we will see him in the shotgun and let loose in similar fashion to what we witnessed in 2010. The biggest emphasis placed on Robinson is for him to follow the "live to see another day" mantra meaning running out of bounds for a gain of five is just as effective long term as taking on multiple tacklers for a gain of eight. The Wolverines opened as a 14.5-point home favorite over Western Michigan for Week 1.

"He's still going to be running the football," Borges said, adding Robinson will be Read more

NFL Preseason provides golden opportunities for savvy bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NFL Preseason football is looked at by the majority of football bettors as a waste of time due to its crap-shoot type of nature. I and many other handicappers happen to disagree with that theory because of the availability of pertinent information into these games. The intentions of head coaches, how intricate the game plan is, and playing time of first string units are all ingredients that are almost always accessible during preseason. Particulars are never openly discussed during the regular season which makes August betting unique and profitable to those who scour through internet. I’ve always felt there to be an edge for those of us looking to beat pointspread numbers this time of year because the oddsmakers quite routinely line early week preseason games at -3. This weekend though, there is an unknown out there that won’t prevent me from making plays that I really like and feel the advantages are strong enough to warrant them, but it is cautioning me to not go overboard on any single play.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Graham wants Pitt to average over 80 plays per game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buffalo at Pittsburgh -29.5 O/U 52

We knew Pittsburgh was going to play at a faster pace under first-year head coach Todd Graham but the prediction out of camp is that the Panthers are going to be more than just "up-tempo". Graham was recently quoted as saying he wants the team to average as many as 82 offensive plays per game. To put the number in perspective, Pitt never averaged more than 67.5 under former head coach Dave Wannstedt. Oregon averaged 78.7 last year and Tulsa, who Graham served as head coach, checked in at 77.4.

This radical change in philosophy creates an interesting scenario for Week 1's opener against Buffalo. The Bulls wanted to play fast in head coach Jeff Quinn's first season but simply didn't Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Buehrle) -120 at Baltimore (Tillman) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

The White Sox and Orioles wrap-up their three-game set tonight in Camden Yards. The best getaway day pitcher in the business will take the mound for the White Sox. Mark Buehrle has been in fine form for the Sox with seven-straight quality starts, while allowing a total of just nine earned runs in those seven starts. With his ability to work quickly and efficiently, the southpaw should carve through the Orioles lineup. Meanwhile, young Chris Tillman will toe the rubber for the Orioles. Tillman has faced his difficulties at the major league level, while showing a 4.85 ERA on the season. It felt like the Orioles rushed the right-hander in previous editions as he was just a raw, young thrower. He started 12 games in 2009 and another 11 games in 2010. Keep in mind, Tillman is still just 23-years-old and it feels that during his work in the minor leagues he’s figured some things out. In two outings since his most recent call up Read more

NFL coaches may get creative in the preseason due to lack of practice

08.11.2011     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
Fairway Jay fired over this interesting article on preseason preparations and discussions with other coaches on game planning. Miami head coach Tony Sparano suggested he may ask other teams to offer up different scenarios like trying to block a punt to see how your special teams' unit responds.

This preseason, Sparano expects more of the same across the league. He said there could even be strategic trade-offs, such as encouraging a foe to try blocking a kick just to see if your special teams can prevent it, in exchange for testing one of their potential weaknesses.

"But there are 20-something new coordinators teaching from square one. Even their returning starters are learning new playbooks. They have to play their starters longer, Read more

NFLX Betting Notes: Whisenhunt aware of transition for new players

08.11.2011     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona at Oakland -3.5 O/U 32.5

Thanks to a very active offseason the Arizona Cardinals have a lot of new faces for 2011. Only five starters are back on offense and of the 22 starting spots, half are currently secured. Ray Horton, the team's third defensive coordinator in five years, said most of his time and efforts have gone towards Arizona's regular season opener against Carolina. The Cardinals are 3.5-point underdog at Oakland tonight.

"I know at times it probably won't look pretty," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Throw in the new scheme installed by Horton, and it's easy to see why his main goal for tonight's game is "getting it over with and getting to Read more

NFLX Betting Notes: Detroit OC says offense won't play conservative

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati at Detroit -4 O/U 35

Despite some injuries to the first-string, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said the team won't be conservative for Friday's home opener against Cincinnati. In the two years under head coach Jim Schwartz, the Lions are 6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS in the preseason. Last preseason the team averaged 23.8 ppg; the quarterbacks combined for 796 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

"I think what we have to understand as a group is that we have to keep moving forward," Linehan said Wednesday. "We're not going in there being conservative in any way and not doing anything because we're worried about lacking numbers. Guys are excited to go play. I don't know how Read more

Texas women is really good at winning the lottery

08.11.2011     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
Apparently there is now a Super System for beating the lottery, that or we've uncovered the luckiest person that ever lived. Texan Joan Ginther has managed to cash FOUR state lottery tickets worth in excess of $21 million. Ginther's "luck" raised more than a few eyebrows with experts claiming she figured out an algorithm to increase her odds. It doesn't seem too far-fetched considering Ginther has a math PHD from Stanford.

[Rich] believes that after Ms Ginther figured out the algorithm, it wouldn't be too difficult to then determine where the tickets would be shipped, as the shipping schedule is apparently fixed, and there were a few sources she could have found it out from.

Gambler Don Johnson makes illustrious return to Atlantic City

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
He's baaaaaaaccccckkkkk!!! Don Johnson, the Atlantic City gambler who won a reported $15 million, will participate in a $100K winner-take-all blackjack tournament in September at the Tropicana Casino. Johnson went from flying under the radar to international stardom following his much publicized winning streak. He later downplayed some of the hype surrounding his recent trip to Europe saying his reported bar tab wasn't even close to what the newspapers claimed. Johnson wants his recently acquired fame to do some good in the world and had the Tropicana agree to a $10K donation to the JBJ Soul Foundation.

“Everybody wants to meet Don Johnson. It’s amazing,” said Tony Rodio, Tropicana’s president and chief executive officer. “He’s an international celebrity, Read more

NFLX Betting Notes: Philadelphia Eagles reveal playing time game plan

Baltimore at Philadelphia -3 O/U 34

Fairly simple game plan in place for the Philadelphia Eagles tonight at home against Baltimore. Head coach Andy Reid said the starters will go the first quarter, followed by the back-ups in the second and the third-string and beyond the rest of the way.
