NCAAF Betting Update: Middle Tennessee with major issues in the trenches

08.17.2011     02:37 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Last week (see below) we discussed Middle Tennessee's projected struggles on the defensive side of the football. This week, it is the offense with issues, most notably the offensive line which entered camp one of only 12 teams in the country with more than 100 career starts worth of experience. Three projected starters are currently sidelined with injuries. Third-year starting left tackle Mike Williams (knee) has yet to practice. All-conference guard Preston Bailey has shoulder and knee problems. And Colin Boss, who started 11 games at center in 2010, is also out with an injury. Which major issues along both offensive and defensive fronts, MTSU may be a bit more focused on keeping/getting everyone healthy in Weeks 1 and 2 against Purdue and Georgia Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Wynn's health holding back Utah offense

08.17.2011     01:25 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Keep an eye on the health of Utah's offensive line and quarterback Jordan Wynn. The o-line currently has two starters and a back-up nursing injuries while Wynn's practice time has been cut short due to the flu. Wynn missed three games last year with injuries and also had offseason shoulder surgery. Head coach Kyle Whittingham said that the development of the offense – with first-year OC Norm Chow – has been lacking due to Wynn not being 100%. Keep in mind that the Utes don't have the luxury of Terrance Cain who graduated after serving as an effective alternative for when Wynn was unable to play. None of Utah's three back-ups this season have played at the DI level. According to Whittingham, the one positive out of camp has been the play of the defense, especially the secondary which was Read more

NCAAF Betting Preview: Illinois has tools to win Big Ten Leaders Division

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In reading some of the Big Ten offseason/preseason talk, little to no attention has been paid to Illinois. Wisconsin nabbed Russell Wilson, Ohio State is in trouble with the law, Joe Paterno got tackled in practice, Indiana's new head coach is a fiery dude, Nebraska is going to crush, Northwestern is a dark horse contender, Michigan could go 10-2 or 2-10...the list goes on. But outside of all of the hoopla, the Illini lie seemingly in weeds with what looks to be a good shot at a banner season. The No. 1 thing in their favor is a very manageable schedule. With five straight home games to open the season followed by a trip to Indiana, it is very possible the Illini could start out 5-1 or 6-0. They have the easiest road slate in the Big Ten with games at Indiana, Purdue, Penn State and Minnesota – should be favored in at least three of those four contests. All of their “tough” opponents travel to Champaign (Arizona State, Ohio Read more

Legalization of online gambling picks up steam

08.17.2011     11:21 AM     Printer Friendly
The New York Post is reporting that a bill to legalize online gambling could finds its way before Congress by the end of 2011.

“I think there is becoming a feeling in Congress that this is something that needs to be regulated and be done,” a source close to the discussions said. “I believe there is a possibility a bill will pass towards the end of the year.”

“The only question is how it is structured,” according to Roger Gross, the publisher of Global Gaming Business magazine.

MGM wants to demolish hotel it never opened

08.17.2011     09:27 AM     Printer Friendly
If you build it...they still may not come. Las Vegas' MGM Resorts International wants to implode its brand new downtown hotel despite never having housed a single guest. The structure reportedly has major flaws – if an earthquake hits, look out! – that according to MGM isn't worth the effort to fix.

NCAAF Betting Analysis: Ole Miss could stuggle again on defense

08.17.2011     09:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston Nutt has never been regarded as a defensive genius but prior to last season his stop units were typically no worse than average. During his career as Mississippi and Arkansas the worst defensive numbers under his watch were: 26.5 ppg, 180.3 ypg rushing, 243.5 ypg passing and 397.2 ypg total offense. Three of those four were eclipsed last year. The team's points per game allowed jumped a whopping 17.5 points. The worst year-to-year decline prior to that was just over a touchdown. The question now becomes, will Ole Miss' defense improve this season? The easy answer would be yes, but unfortunately, there isn't a lot to suggest the improvement will be massive. Since 2002, Nutt returned six or more defensive starters eight of nine seasons. The lone time he didn't was in 2004 when Arkansas brought back only three starters and finished 5-6 – by far Nutt's worst defense statistically prior to 2010. It is clear that experience or lack thereof is the best tool in predicting Nutt’s defenses. This year, the unit returns only four starters which logically keep us from projecting a huge spike in production.

Online poker players seek refuge offshore

08.17.2011     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Interesting article from ESPN about a poker message board designed to assist online players wishing to take up residency outside of the United States so they can continue playing.

"We wanted to launch as close as we could post-WSOP," Spears said. "We figured there would be a lot of guys waiting around and wondering, 'What do I do now? I'm a professional poker player, do I want to start on the circuit or do I want to go somewhere to establish myself and play online again?'"

"Banks are pretty strict," she said. "I can't guarantee that they'll definitely be able to open an account at a specific bank. If they bring all the requirements they should be fine, but it's not like the U.S. where you walk in with your license [and it's all set]. Here you have to answer questions -- it can get complex. … [The banks] have to make sure the money isn't being Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Gee) at San Diego (Latos) -145 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: San Diego

The Mets and Padres finish their three-game set today in the sunshine of Petco Park.  San Diego starter Mat Latos is very quietly pitching his best baseball of the season.  Over his last three starts he’s allowed a total of just five earned runs.  In addition, the strikeouts and command are there, with an 18-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Keep in mind Latos fought a sore shoulder to start the campaign, which seemed to sap some of his effectiveness. Against a weakened Mets lineup sans Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy, Latos should boast another strong outing today.  Meanwhile, Dillon Gee will start for the Mets.  Gee doesn’t have near the sizzling stuff of Latos.  He sports a healthy 10-4 record but the youngster could be wearing down after allowing 15 runs, five home runs and a 15-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last four starts.  With San Diego’s lineup hitting as well as Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Notes: Eagles starters will play first half vs. Steelers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Pittsburgh -3 O/U 33.5

Reports out of Philadelphia Eagles camp have the starters playing the entire first half of Thursday's game at Pittsburgh. There are however more than a few players not expected to play due to injury.

The biggest names, of course, are wide receivers Smith (knee) and Jeremy Maclin (illness) and defensive tackle Mike Patterson (seizure). Smith and Maclin haven't practiced with the team yet this summer and Patterson is still on a slow return after being hospitalized following a seizure he suffered on the field.

Also missing Thursday's game will be defensive end Brandon Graham (knee), tackles Ryan Harris (back), Winston Justice (knee) and Read more

Sportsbooks react to situations with Oregon and Miami-Florida

08.17.2011     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
Sportsbooks reacting to two potentially impactful situations with Oregon/LSU and Miami (FL)/Maryland matchups currently off the board. News broke yesterday that Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas was in the car during Cliff Harris’ infamous 118 mph late night jaunt. According to Ducks head coach Chip Kelly however, Thomas will not be suspended or even disciplined. Nevertheless, offshore and Vegas sportsbooks are currently no longer offering odds on the game.

Meanwhile, Miami is in hot water after an incarcerated Ponzi schemer recently came forth and said he kept as many as 72 Hurricane football players "afloat" over and eight year stretch. And by Read more
