College Football ATS Notes: Washington's Price producing but banged up

09.21.2011     02:44 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
California at Washington -1 O/U 58

Washington quarterback Keith Price has up until this point exceeded expectations with 691 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions through three games. Unfortunately, he's taken somewhat of a beating and doesn't appear to be 100 percent heading into this week's PAC-10 home opener against California. The Huskies opened as 3-point favorites were bet down to as low as a pick 'em at some sportsbooks.

Price said this week his right knee is 90 percent healed, but that his left knee was just 40 or 50 percent healthy.

"I didn't know I was going to be this banged up," Price said. "And it hasn't even been on really big hits. I'm injuring myself."

PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs Gambling Preview

09.21.2011     02:33 PM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The final leg of the FedEx playoff tees off Thursday with The Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Thirty players remain in the running for a massive payday; $1.44 million for winning the tournament, and a $10 million bonus for winning the FedExCup.

The math is simple for the top-5 players in the FedExCup playoff points standings: Win the tournament and you win the FedExCup and over $11.4M.

The top-5 players entering the tournament are below, along with their odds to win (Pinnacle)
Webb Simpson – 13-1
Dustin Johnson – 19-1
Justin Rose – 19-1
Luke Donald – 7-1
Matt Kuchar – 19-1

East Lake Golf Club plays up to 7,340 yards and is Par 70. A hole-by-hole description shows a distinguishing characteristic of the course in that it ends with a Par 3 of 235 yards; one of the most difficult closing holes on the PGA Tour. The 2009 and 2010 events were won with scores of 9-under and 8-under par, as the course has played tougher with more difficult greens since the conversion to Bermuda grass in 2008. NCAAF Gambling Preview: Oklahoma State Cowboys at Texas A&M Aggies

Oklahoma State at Texas A&M (12:30 pm PT – ABC)
CRIS Opener: Texas A&M -3
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Texas A&M -0.5

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: The Aggies certainly haven’t forgotten last year’s loss to Oklahoma State and it appears the betting markets haven’t either. Texas A&M has been bet up to as high as a 5-point favorite this week after opening -3. The revenge angle can be a bit overstated and overused in sports betting but I put some stock in it this week after reading some of these quotes:

"We've lost to them three games in a row, and that's a key game on our schedule," A&M head coach Mike Sherman said. "We've put a lot of effort into that in the offseason, to see exactly what they're doing, and how we can play better and coach Read more

Kinne's status still up in the air; Bettors make strong move against Boise

09.21.2011     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Still no official news on Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne. As per yesterday's post, some sources have him day-to-day while others say he'll be out 2-4 weeks. Perhaps there are some “in the know” as we see a rare line move against Boise State at home with the Broncos bet down from -32.5 to as low as -28.

Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship at Monday's press conference: "There's nothing much more than what we knew before. He is going to be day-to-day and I'm not just saying that. He was much better yesterday than he was on early Sunday morning when he left the field. It is my understanding that he will have an MRI done to just confirm what we expect the diagnosis to be and he has not had that done yet."

College Football ATS Preview: Florida State Seminoles at Clemson Tigers

Florida State at Clemson (12:30 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: Florida State -3 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current Line: Clemson -2 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Florida State -1.5

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: This would seem to be a tough emotional spot for the Seminoles with Death Valley not the ideal venue for those less than 100% mentally prepared to go to war. But having poured everything into last week’s primetime home revenge tilt against Oklahoma, and coming up short, it’s more than acceptable to question their collective psyche this week.

On top of the crippling loss to the Sooners the Seminoles are dealing with a slew of injuries to key personnel. Quarterback EJ Manuel was forced out of action with a shoulder injury and is currently ruled questionable. Even if Manuel does suit up he’s likely to be less Read more

Frank gives up Full Tilt contributions, Dwan talks elephant in the room

09.21.2011     12:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two articles on the recent Full Tilt Poker accusations. The first discusses how Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank will give up the money he received in campaign contributions from board members of Full Tilt.

“If not, I’ll just give it to charity,” he said. “I’m really very unpleasantly surprised that these guys were defrauding people,” Frank said.

And poker pro Tom "durrrr" Dwan voiced his opinion on what he calls the elephant in the room.

On Howard Lederer, whom the U.S. is seeking the forfeiture of more than $40 million: “its hard to trust anyone whos on the board of a company that is in the process of defrauding people for hundreds of millions. i trust howard way more than id expect to trust anyone in this situation, but i still question Read more

NFL Handicapping: Fairway Jay Week 2 Betting Recap

09.21.2011     11:42 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For over a decade, Fairway Jay has kept a proprietary database of statistical information and utilized relevant rushing numbers and statistical guidelines to better assist him in sports investing and providing pointspread winners.

Week 2 NFL favorites went 13-3 SU and 8-7-1 ATS. For the season, betting favorites are 15-15-2 ATS. Last season betting favorites went 123-128-7 ATS (48%). A few close wins or losses could have the overall records slightly different based on closing lines and sportsbook. No division games in Week 2, and home underdogs went 2-4 SU and 3-2-1 ATS. For the season, home underdogs are 4-5 SU and 5-3-1 ATS. Totals had another big week for over bettors, going 10-5-1 O/U and for the season 22-8-2 O/U.

Teams that had a meaningful rushing advantage over their opponent (30 or more yards) went 3-6 ATS for the worst week in a decade of my keeping records. It was just the fifth losing week the last 10 years where teams with a meaningful rushing advantage posted a losing week overall. In Week 1, this rushing advantage resulted in a 9-0 ATS week, making the season 12-6 ATS. In fact, even more rare was the ATS record when rushing for at least Read more

NCAAF Pointspread Notes: Betting against Florida Atlantic the only move

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida Atlantic at Auburn -33.5 O/U 57.5

The following pretty much sums up the current state of the Florida Atlantic football program.

FAU player: “A lot of times I feel like we lose the game before we step on the field" Head coach Howard Schnellenberger: "They know they are going into this game with a very small chance of winning, but it can give us a lesson in how to play top-of-the-line football...This is part of the schedule where we are not telling our players they are competitive and have an equal opportunity to win.”

FAU has been even less competitive than last year when asked to step up in class. Against Michigan State, South Florida and Texas, the Owls lost by an average of 25 ppg. This year, they've been outscored 85-3. Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Southern Miss defense looks much improved

Southern Miss at Virginia -3.5 O/U 53

Seeing some positives out of Southern Miss' defense through three weeks. The stop unit had actually declined each of Larry Fedora's first three seasons but the switch to a 4-2-5 alignment has led to just 302 ypg allowed. They haven't played the most potent of offenses with Marshall, SE Louisiana and Louisiana Tech – though Tech just hung 34 on Houston. This week's trip to Virginia should tell us more as the Cavaliers are averaging 441.3 ypg.

"We're doing some good things out there, getting guys in the right spots and they're making plays," said first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch. "We got the turnovers and got Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Denver plans on using 5-2 front against Tennessee

Denver at Tennessee -7 O/U 42

News and notes on Denver's defensive game plan for stopping Tennessee's run game. Last season, in a 26-20 victory, the Broncos used a 5-2 front for much of the game and held Chris Johnson to 53 yards on 19 carries. They did however give up a 54-yard run to back-up Javon Ringer. Outside of Ringer's run, the Broncos held the Titans to 3.2 yards per carry. Expect a similar focus from the road side this weekend in Nashville.

New York Giants at Philadelphia

Reports out of Philadelphia hint that quarterback Michael Vick will play this weekend against New York. Most sportsbooks have yet to post a line on the game though Lucky's looks to be taking action with the Eagles currently a 6-point favorite.

"That's foolish on our part medically to put time frame out there," Burkholder said Monday. "Everybody wants to know a time frame, everybody wants to know whether Mike's going to play, everybody wants to know whether Mike's going to practice. We're going to go through our protocol and when Mike's ready to practice, I'm going to turn him over to coach and he's going to make Read more

Kansas City at San Diego -14.5 O/U 45

Rumors circulating that the relationship between Kansas City head coach Todd Haley and GM Scott Pioli isn’t very smooth these days. Haley for whatever reason has also taken heat for the amount of ACL injuries the team has suffered. The hot seat is getting warmer but Haley doesn't seemed all too concerned at this point.

“I haven’t heard that. I haven’t read that,” Cassel told WHB radio in Kansas City (via sportsradiointerviews.com). Read more

Florida State injuries spark betting frenzy on Clemson

09.21.2011     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Check out the line move on this weekend's Florida State-Clemson game. The Seminoles of course are a banged up football team. Quarterback EJ Manuel is questionable and the entire wide receivers corps is essentially gone. And as Teddy Covers pointed out in the Sportsmemo Posting Forum, a lot of time and effort went into last week's game against Oklahoma and now the Seminoles have a big road test. On the flip side, bettors must also consider Clemson's mindset after handing Auburn its first loss in two years.
