NCAAF Handicapping News: Bettors continue to pound Central Florida

10.06.2011     02:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Marshall at Central Florida -19 O/U 43

After losing two straight losses to Florida International and BYU, Central Florida enjoyed an extra week of preparation before playing host to Marshall this Saturday. Interesting line move in this one as Marshall, off a road win over Louisville, opened as a 14.5-point underdog but now finds itself as high as +19.5. The Thundering Herd were +21.5 in a Week 1, rain-shortened game, at at West Virginia (34-13 final).

UCF head coach George O'Leary doesn't have much of a track record off of a bye: 3-10 SU at UCF and 12-17 SU overall. But his Knights have responded after a SU loss with a record of 7-1 ATS the last three seasons.

College Football ATS Notes: Northwestern's Persa nicked up but should be ready

Michigan -7 at Northwestern O/U 59.5

A couple notes on Northwestern as they prepare for this weekend's game against Michigan. Quarterback Dan Persa admitted he had a set back during his Achilles tendon rehabilitation this past summer which caused him to miss the first few games. He played much of last week's game (4 TDs, 0 INTs) against Illinois but took himself out late after tweaking the injury again. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Persa practiced Monday and will start against the Wolverines. Meanwhile, starting running back Mike Trumpy has been lost for the season with a torn ACL. He was the team's second leading rusher (60.7 ypg, 5.2 ypc) behind back-up quarterback Kain Colter (66.5 ypg). The injury to Trumpy doesn't help put Persa's health is the real key. Coupled with the running ability of Colter, Northwestern's offense has the ability to be fairly dynamic.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Ball State secondary drilled hard with injuries

10.06.2011     01:59 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Temple -8.5 at Ball State O/U 49

A wave of injuries has hit Ball State's secondary with seven players listed as "questionable", "doubtful" or "out". Temple doesn't pose much of a threat through the air (156.4 ypg passing) but may try to take advantage of the situation.

Like many of Ball State's defensive backs, Jones found himself rushed into play against Oklahoma. Both of the Cardinals' starting safeties left the game in the first half with injuries, while junior cornerback Armand Dehaney suffered a concussion on the Sooners' first offensive play. Junior backup cornerback Andre Dawson also suffered an ankle injury and junior All-Mid-American Conference cornerback Jason Pinkston sat out his second straight game with a hamstring injury.

NFL Handicapping: Patriots' defense allows big yards but modest points

New York Jets at New England -9 O/U 48.5

Interesting theory that despite being on pace for a historically horrific season statistically, New England’s defense (24.5 ppg allowed) may not be as bad as they are made out to be. Now you can put a positive statistical spin on practically every team, but the Patriots have excelled at times as a "situational defense". For example, based on ESPN's new Total Quarterback Rating, outside of the red zone, opposing quarterbacks rank first while inside the red zone they rank last. Also note that of the 1,475 passing yards the Pats have allowed, over 50% came when they were up by more than a touchdown. As mentioned, this is still not a very good unit (see Buffalo Bills fiasco) but up until this point, a marginal performance has been good enough to get the job done more often than not.

Bettors faced with three college football games totaled 71 or higher

10.06.2011     12:39 PM     Printer Friendly
Three games on this weekend's college football card with totals of 71 or higher.

Kansas at Oklahoma 31.5 O/U 73.5
This one opened 69.5 at CRIS and has steadily climbed. The reason behind the move may be less about OSU's potent offense and more about how bad the Jayhawks (5-0 O/U) have looked on defense. In four games, KU is surrendering 545 ypg, 7.8 ypp and 44.3 ppg. They've played some pretty good offenses (Georgia Tech, Texas Tech, and Northern Illinois) but Oklahoma State is just as potent. Last year's meeting barely went under the closing number of 65 (48-14 OSU win).

East Carolina at Houston -10.5 O/U 74
The 2008 matchup hit the 70-point mark and that was in the conference championship game with former ECU head coach Skip Holtz involved. Under Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: UConn secondary not a good matchup vs. West Virginia

10.06.2011     11:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Connecticut at West Virginia -19.5 O/U 56.5

Here's a particular in-game matchup that has the potential to be lopsided. Last week, without key cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson, UConn's secondary was absolutely torched by Western Michigan's passing attack. The Broncos had a trio of receivers combine for 31 catches, 409 yards, and four touchdowns. It is logical to think that if Western Michigan could inflict that type of damage, so can West Virginia, who with each passing week seems more confident with Dana Holgorsen's offense. The inflated line is a clear reflection of UConn's recent struggles, but if the Huskies can't stop the pass, the Mountaineers could put up some monster numbers.

"He's one of our captains for a reason," defensive tackle Kendall Reyes said. "He's obviously an impact player we have on our defense, but

College Football Gambling: Southern Miss defense vs. Navy offense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Miss at Navy -2.5 O/U 58

The number are good (81.6 ypg allowed) but we'll see if Southern Miss' rush defense is the real deal when it travels to face Navy on Saturday. Utilizing first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch's new 4-2-5 scheme, the stop unit appears to be much improved over last year. According to head coach Larry Fedora, the team is well prepared for the Midshipmen’s triple option attack though Disch countered by saying that the 4-2-5 was built more to stop the spread.

"Fortunately for us, we started preparing for it back in the spring and then some during (preseason) camp," said USM coach Larry Fedora. "We have spent some time on it. Hopefully with that, and the days we actually have to prepare this week, our defense will be ready."

"You can't do what

Texas Governor Rick Perry nixes wager on Red River Rivalry

10.06.2011     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly
Perhaps Texas Governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry knows a bad bet when he sees one. That or he's chicken. Perry office didn't accept a friendly wager with Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin on the outcome of this weekend's Red River Rivalry.

In a quote we completely made up, Perry's office has this to say regarding the proposed wager: "Using his Sports Options odds screen, Governor Perry is well aware of Texas' double-digit price tag. If some sort of agreement can be made from a pointspread perspective rather than a straight up perspective, the Governor would consider it." Fallin's office countered, "What a whuss."

NFL Handicapping: Oakland coach candid about poor rush defense

10.06.2011     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland at Houston -6 O/U 48.5

Oakland can sure run the football, but stopping it, well, that's a different story. The Raiders lead the NFL with 178.8 ypg but are 29th in ypg allowed (136.0) and dead last in ypc allowed (5.9). In last week's loss to New England, the Patriots ran the ball to the right 12 times for 134 yards (11.2 ypc). Up the gut or to the left, just 29 yards on 18 carries (1.6 ypc).

“I’m running the ball,” Jackson said. “I’m running the ball until I can get them to make me stop running the ball. With that back and that offensive line, in their stadium, I would. Wouldn’t you?”

“I know this: we ain’t solved it, and that’s the bottom line,” Jackson said. “At the end of the day, we’re still getting the ball run at us, OK? We have to get that solved.

College Football ATS Notes: Arizona State down two o-line starters

Arizona State -4 at Utah O/U 48.5

Arizona State is expected to be down two offensive line starters for Saturday's game at Utah.

It happened to center Garth Gerhart (ankle) and Finkenberg (knee) last week, and they will miss Saturday’s game against Utah. Finkenberg is out three to four weeks after having surgery to repair his meniscus.

ASU could go with two first-time starters: sophomore Kody Koebensky at center and redshirt freshman Tyler Sulka at right tackle. Or Simmons, a senior, might be healthy enough to play for the first time in five weeks.

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Toxic situation brewing between Edsall and players

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Maryland at Georgia Tech -14 O/U

Based on what we've read on the Maryland Terrapins recently, their struggles appear to be more than a lack of execution on the playing field. According to a local news source, the transition from Ralph Friedgen to Randy Edsall has not been smooth. One unnamed veteran said that he can't wait for the season to be over while another contacted Friedgen for advice regarding the matter. Note that 13 of Friedgen's former recruits with eligibility left are no longer on the team for various reasons. From our perspective, players bitching and whining about coaches is nothing new – especially when they are consistently on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Edsall was signed to a six-year deal and will be given ample time to build up a program that was hit with scholarship and practice restrictions. That may mean making a point or Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' South Point Casino launched its own free online poker website today. Southpointpoker.com will initially be available only to Hotel Club members but on October 17, everyone, including residents of the United States, will be able to play. Clearly a move in preparation for some sort of upcoming regulation/legalization.

Players will have their chance to compete for $100,000 in cash and prizes each month, plus there will a $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event seat given away each and every week.

Not only is the site 100% free, it is 100% legal, and was even approved by the Nevada Gaming Board, though it is not licensed by that body because the site is ratified as a casino promotion.

Wayne Rooney's dad and seven others were arrested in connection to some sort of soccer betting scheme. There were an unusually high amount of bets placed on there being a red card in a 2010 match between Motherwell and Hearts of the Scottish Premier League. Motherwell player Steve Jennings, who was also arrested, received the red card for "abusive language" towards the ref.
