Bank robber stinks at gambling, forced to turn self in after going bust

11.17.2011     02:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's assume for a second you manage to pull off a bank heist. Better yet, how about two in five days? You would probably consider yourself very fortunate and want to ensure that your "earnings" would last so you wouldn't have to tempt fate with yet another bank robbery. Meet New Hampshire resident Timothy Burke (pictured left), who by all accounts is a solid game planner. He robbed a bank (the same one) twice in five days – albeit for a modest $6K payday. Following his accomplishments, Mr. Burke took a bus (isn’t Atlantic City much closer?) to Las Vegas where as you probably already suspected, proceeded to gamble all of said earnings away. Broke and on the lam, Burke decided it best to turn himself into police where he was arraigned for felony armed robbery. He was already out on bail for possession of heroin and pot. Nice.

NFL Thursday Night Gambling Preview: New York Jets at Denver Broncos

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Lots of Tim Tebow talk with the quarterback on display for a national TV audience tonight. Will he complete a pass in the first half, which he failed to do last week (2 completions the entire game)? Both defenses figure to fill the box and pressure the quarterbacks tonight, which could set up some big offensive plays if Tebow and Sanchez can make the proper reads and adjust.

The Broncos offensive philosophy and system has employed zone, man, option and even the triple-option since Tebow took over, but note that the Broncos have rushed for 244, 299, 195 and 183 yards the past four weeks. Denver rushed for more yards in October than any other NFL team since 2007. They now rank second in the NFL at 158 ypg, but tonight’s challenge could be the biggest with injuries in Denver’s backfield and Willis McGahee a game time decision.

Denver’s defense has been beaten badly in some games this season, and their sub-par defense (360 ypg) and poor pass defense is susceptible – allowed 49, 45 and 29 points to quality teams and quarterbacks in Green Bay, Detroit and San Diego. The Broncos also allowed 22 points to Cincinnati and 20+ two times to Oakland. Read more

College Football Betting Preview: New Mexico State Aggies at BYU Cougars

New Mexico State +22.5 at BYU O/U 60.5
Recommendation: New Mexico State

I've backed New Mexico State on multiple occasions this season and had fairly good results. The Aggies are much improved across the board and have been competitive in nearly all of their games this season. They have two competent quarterbacks in Matt Christian and Travaughn Colwell and enough of a run game (141.2 ypg) to keep opposing teams honest. BYU may be 7-3 but can hardly be considered an elite level team. Last week they crushed Idaho 42-7 but the Vandals were off a rare victory and showed absolutely no effort from the opening whistle. The Cougars are back with Jake Heaps at quarterback after Riley Nelson was hurt last game. They are both essentially the same player (Nelson more of a runner) in terms of production but the constant shuffling has created inconsistency and lack of continuity with the offense. And prior to the win over Idaho, BYU hadn’t posted a blowout win despite a Read more

NCAAF Gambling News: Clemson Tigers peeved about subpar offense

11.17.2011     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Clemson -7.5 at NC State O/U 52.5

Interesting situation for Clemson this weekend at it travels to take on NC State. With last week's narrow win over Wake Forest, the Tigers clinched a berth in the ACC Championship. They also have a rivalry game on deck with South Carolina (SC won 29-7 last season). But according to the team and coaches, the main focus this week is getting the offense back on track. Against Wake, the Tigers rolled up 522 yards but had three turnovers and needed a last second field goal to escape with the win. The week before that, they were held to 17 points in a loss to Georgia Tech. NC State (5-5) had been playing better football (3-1 SU/ATS run) before laying an egg in last week's 14-10 loss at Boston College.

College Basketball Handicapping: Link to daily power ratings

11.17.2011     10:42 AM     Printer Friendly
Found this link while reading one of Ken Pom's blogs. Worth a bookmark as it provides numerous college basketball "power ratings" for the entire betting card. Also, Pomeroy has some interesting insight on the concept of his "numbers" not being able to account for injuries, emotions, travel, etc.

It’s also why a point spread will be more accurate than a ratings system over time. (You can track that phenomena for college hoops on this page.) The power of my computer is overwhelmed by the knowledge of thousands of people incorporating their own information collectively. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still proud of my computer. It provides a great estimate of team strength in most cases. But it’s a cold, unfeeling machine, incapable of incorporating emotional factors, injuries, and other unexpected circumstances that occur on a daily basis. (Although, when injuries do occur, you can get some excellent insight on how much that injury affects a team by comparing Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Southern Miss eager for revenge over UAB

11.17.2011     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Miss -23 at UAB O/U 61

Two things in play for tonight's UAB-Southern Miss contest. The first is the C-USA East Division title which the Golden Eagles can wrap up with a victory. The second is a bit of revenge after the Blazers upset USM as 10.5-point underdogs in a wild 50-49 overtime affair last season. In fact, UAB beat Southern Miss 30-17 in 2009 as well, again as 10.5-point dogs. Won't be easy though as the pointspread has been heavily adjusted for USM's success and UAB's failures this season.

“We want to get them back, not just for the game two years ago but for last year when they came in here and beat us,” Southern Miss offensive lineman Austin Quattrochi said. “We definitely have a chip on our shoulder coming into Thursday.”

NCAAB Handicapper Free Play: UT-Martin Skyhawks at Arkansas State Indians

Tennessee Martin at Arkansas State
Recommendation: Arkansas State -5 1st half

It was an embarrassing performance by Arkansas State last time out as it snapped a 13-game home winning streak in a 77-46 loss to Missouri State. Head coach John Brady was to but it lightly, not a happy camper in the postgame press conference. The Indians are a capable team that won the Sun Belt West Division last year. But after a 0-2 start, there is an obvious sense of urgency for this group. That is where UT-Martin comes into play. The Skyhawks are one of the worst teams in DI. They won just seven games last year and all of them came against non-DI or lower-tier OVC teams. They were pounded by Louisville in their opener and trailed Ohio by 19 at half before the Bobcats quit and limped to a nine-point victory. I expect to see Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Maryland adjusting to life under Turgeon

11.17.2011     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Maryland vs. Alabama -8 O/U 128.5

Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon is a no-nonsense type of guy. He's already made his presence felt by benching point guard Terrell Stoglin at the start of Sunday's game against UNC-Wilmington. Stoglin came in and ended up scoring a team-high 22 points but the Terps struggled at times on offense (0-for-9 from three). Turgeon looks to be toying with the lineup some in hopes of finding six or seven guys that will defend and play hard on a nightly basis. He also hinted that some of his guards took "ill-advised" shots, meaning working the ball down low is going to be a Read more

NFL Handicapping: Redskins' offensive line in complete shambles

11.17.2011     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas -7.5 at Washington O/U 41.5

The offensive line play for the Washington Redskins has been abysmal due to injuries and lack of continuity. Over the last five games, the run game has produced 61, 52, 26, 92 and 42 yards. According to reports, more injuries and line-up changes to the o-line are expected Sunday against the Cowboys.

“We’re trying to decide that right now, what direction we’re going to go,” Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said. “We have a couple of options that we’re messing around with, and obviously we’re not going to share all of those options. But we’re going to try to come up with the best formula to give us the best chance to win.”

“That’s definitely the biggest factor,” Shanahan said Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Mississippi State learning to play with and without Sidney

11.17.2011     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mississippi State vs. Texas A&M -4.5 O/U 133.5

Mississippi State is still trying to figure out its identity with Renardo Sidney behaving but not healthy and fellow frontliner Arnett Moultrie (6-11) emerging as a threat in Sidney's absence. There are rumblings the Bulldogs want to play both players at the same time – good luck with that Rick Stansbury! Note that without Sidney last game, MSU went more up-tempo in its 80-65 win over South Alabama. Moultrie netted a team-high 28 points. Sidney, who is probable tonight, is not in the type of shape to run up and down the floor whereas Moultrie is clearly built for that type of game. Another thing to consider is the emergence of Moultrie is likely not good for the delicate psyche of Sidney whose play tends to suffer when not the “center” of attention. That being Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: UT's Bray upgraded to probable, Vanderbilt favored by -1.5

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt -1.5 at Tennessee O/U 44.5

According to reports, Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray (broken thumb) will suit up Saturday against Vanderbilt. In the five games without Bray, Tennessee's passing game produced 174.2 ypg, 1 TD and 6 INTs – three of those contests were against LSU, Alabama and South Carolina though. Bray unquestionably gives the Vols a better chance to move the football, assuming he is close to 100% and not playing out of desperation. You notice in the quotes below that OC Jim Chaney used terms like "rust", "rusty" and "worry". The key to this game however may have nothing to do with throwing the football but instead the ground games. According to our ACCU-Stats (see below), Vanderbilt is over a yard better at running and stopping the run – a massive advantage for a team favored by less than a field Read more

NCAAB Betting Recap: Long Beach pounds Pittsburgh as double-digit underdog

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed another top play Big Drive winner Wednesday when Long Beach State (+13.5) beat No. 9 Pittsburgh, 86-76. The Beach Boys traveled cross country and beat the Big East bullies in convincing fashion. This was no fluke. Read the recap and box score and you’ll see the 49ers outplayed Pitt the entire way while shooting 59% from the floor.

With that pointspread prognosis winner, we won our sixth-straight college basketball game and we’re off to a sizzling 6-1 start to the season. I posted some notes with an article yesterday noting that Long Beach State was playing the toughest schedule in the country this season, but that the 49ers were a very experienced and together team that was going to make some noise on their way to the NCAA Tournament this season. Coach Dan Monson is challenging this team to turn a tough schedule into competitive contests and more wins this season, and the Big West preseason favorite delivered big in their opening act, ending Pittsburgh’s 58-game Read more
