College Basketball Gambling Notes: Taking a look at the money earners

11.28.2011     02:34 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On Sunday, I discussed some of college basketball’s early season “money burners”. Let’s take a look at those who are cashing tickets at a high rate and see whether or not the good fortune will last.

Saint Louis (5-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/29 at Loyola Marymount) - The Bilikens took their lumps last season with a youthful roster and various suspensions/injuries. The results thus far are real with convincing wins over Washington, Villanova and Oklahoma. It will be interesting to see whether or not they can maintain their intensity and handle the hype – especially with an easy December and inflated numbers – prior to A-10 play. Check out this slate of opponents: Loyola Marymount, Portland, Vermont, Illinois-Springfield, Alabama State, Arkansas State and Texas Southern. That should be seven wins before traveling to New Mexico on December 31.

Duquesne (4-1 ATS, Next Game: 11/30 vs. Pittsburgh) - The Dukes have shown no signs of missing Read more

Monday Night Football: Bettors continue to support Saints over Giants

11.28.2011     01:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York Giants at New Orleans -7.5 O/U 51

Thoughts on tonight's Monday Football contest between the Giants and Saints from Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay.

Jay Kornegay says: "We opened New Orleans at minus-6.5 last Sunday with a total of 52. The number has been a solid minus-7 for most of the week, but starting Friday we received some Saints money. We moved to minus-7.5 on Friday and have been there ever since. The total has dropped a little to 51.

"Despite the Giants being a semi-popular team, their recent poor play will keep the public on the Saints side. With the majority of the sports books at minus-7, I expect most of the money to show on New Orleans, and this line will close at minus-7.5 and we'll even see some minus-8s. The total will be pushed up as well and should close at 52."

Prediction: Line will close at minus-7.5 or minus-8; total will close at 52

Tobey Maguire coughs up $80K for involvement in poker ring

11.28.2011     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Tobey Maguire agreed to play $80K for his involvement in an illegal high stakes poker ring. Court documents said that Maguire took home close to $300K in winnings. The source of that money however is what triggered the whole incident as Ponzi schemer Bradley Ruderman, who is currently in jail, funded the operation. Hopefully Maguire and his estimated $75 million net worth will be able to withstand the financial blow.

ACC Championship Betting Notes: Clemson Tigers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

11.28.2011     09:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
ACC Championship @ Charlotte, NC
Virginia Tech vs. Clemson
CRIS Opener: Virginia Tech -6.5
CRIS Current: Virginia Tech -7.5

Notes: Didn't take long for bettors to clear out the key number of -6.5. It has been over a month since Clemson put together a solid outing. Only a last second field goal over Wake Forest kept the Tigers from entering this one on a four-game slide. Quarterback Tajh Boyd looks to be breaking down with seven interceptions his last four games (3 INTs his first eight games). The Tigers lead the ACC in most offensive categories but Virginia Tech isn't too far behind. The Hokies averaged 419.3 ypg and 6.03 ypp vs. ACC foes and are clearly peaking at the right time. These two teams met back on October 1 with Clemson (+7) winning outright 23-3 in Blacksburg. Since then, the Hokies have averaged 31.2 ppg. Trench play appears to heavily favor Virginia Tech. Against ACC opponents, the Hokies allowed 126.5 ypg on the ground (3.8 ypc) while Read more

C-USA Championship Betting Notes: Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Houston Cougars

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
C-USA Championship
Southern Miss at Houston
CRIS Opener: Houston -13
CRIS Current: Houston -13.5

Notes: The last time Houston was involved in a competitive game was late September; a 49-42 win at UTEP. Since then, the Cougars have won by margins of 32, 30, 56, 43, 39, 35, and 53. But it seems like we go through this every year – C-USA West teams put up monster offensive numbers but falter in the championship game over the more defensive-minded East. The East has won the last four titles (3 of those 4 were at East site) and Southern Miss ranks No. 1 in the total defense (323.6 ypg allowed) in conference play. Over the last four seasons, only one of USM's 10 league losses came by double-digits (1, 1, 6, 13, 7, 5, 3, 3, 5, 6). The last time these two teams met, Southern Miss won 59-41 in Hattiesburg. Houston quarterback Case Keenum did not play. The line shot up to Houston -14 but has settled in at Read more

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 12 AFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC News and Notes from Week 12.

Buffalo
Is it too early to call CJ Spiller a bust? He was an amazing playmaker at Clemson and the No. 9 overall draft choice by the Bills, but he's shown exactly zero playmaking ability at the NFL level. His long carry today, replacing Fred Jackson as the starter? Nine yards. In 25 games over two years with Buffalo (156 rushes and receptions coming following the game), Spiller has found the end zone only twice – less than the number of times that he's fumbled. And his contribution to the return game hasn't done a darn thing. Just their current four game skid, the Bills have collapsed on both sides of the football. This was their best offensive performance in nearly two months, but the secondary got absolutely torched in the second half. Without pro bowl caliber cornerback Terrance McGee (IR) in Read more

Oddsmakers giddy for upcoming NBA season

11.28.2011     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay responds to news of the upcoming NBA season. According to Kornegay, the NBA accounts for 10-15 percent of the sportsbook's business.

"We're actually a pretty big NBA house, and it's more like 15 percent for us. So, to lose out on 15 percent of your business, I don't care what industry you're talking about, it's a big hit for us. So, we're certainly glad to see NBA back on betting boards," Kornegay said.

NFL Handicapping: Houston Texans down to third-string QB TJ Yates

11.28.2011     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta at Houston

Houston's quarterback situation just went from bad to worse after Matt Leinart reportedly broke his collarbone in Sunday's win over Jacksonville. The Texans were forced to go with rookie TJ Yates who performed adequately (80of-15, 70 yards) in relief of Leinart. Yates is likely to be this week's starter though the Texans picked up veteran Kellen Clemens after Schaub went down. Houston (8-3) owns a two-game lead over Tennessee (6-5) in the AFC South. The remaining schedule appears manageable with Atlanta, Carolina and Tennessee at home and road trips to Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

“It’s why we drafted him,” offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said of Yates. “He’s a calm guy, he’s a smart guy and he knows what we do. We’ll see how it goes the next couple days, the next week. If that’s what Read more

College Basketball Gambling Notes: UCLA remains tough sell for bettors

11.28.2011     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pepperdine at UCLA -11.5 O/U 135

Update on UCLA's early season woes. Head coach Ben Howland will continue to make his point with forward Reeves Nelson no longer in the starting lineup. Also a concern is center Joshua Smith's lack of conditioning and point guard Lazeric Jones' ineffectiveness (24.5% FGs, 16.7% 3-pt). Also note that the Bruins will continue to play their home games at the LA Sports Arena. Their first two games averaged about 5,000 fans – a generous figure as both contests had a "neutral site" feel.

Long Beach State at Louisville -9.5 O/U 133

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino says he team remains in "survival mode" as injuries have kept the Cardinals short on bodies. Point guard Peyton Siva (ankle) returned last time out against Ohio but Pinto admitted that the veteran was rusty. Louisville’s offense has looked horrendous thus far, failing to crack the 60-point mark against Arkansas State and Ohio. The defense though has carried the load with opponent scores of 48, 48, 53, 27 and 54. Long Beach State heads to the KFC Yum! Center in the Read more
