NCAAF Handicapping: Weather could get nasty for Oklahoma-Oklahoma State

11.30.2011     12:01 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 72.5

Weather expected to be cold and rainy for this year's edition of the Bedlam Series between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (game time at 7 pm local). The total opened 74 but has crept down to 72.5 (71.5 at Pinnacle). Local reports point out that Boone Pickens Stadium drains extremely well while OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden said that playing with gloves won't be a problem if the weather turns bad.

The forecast for Saturday is not positive - a game-time temperature in the upper 30s, with a probability of rain. During the great majority of his two seasons as OSU's starting quarterback, Brandon Weeden has played in favorable conditions. The Boone Pickens Stadium turf drains

Pete Rose wants you to have a part of baseball history...for a small fee of course

11.30.2011     11:15 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Pete Rose has taken the Hey, I Gotta Make a Living concept to new heights. The Hit King is reportedly selling copies (notarized of course) of the papers that banished him from baseball. For $500!!! You can also take him out to dinner for a grand but only $100 worth of booze.

“My banishment from baseball is a major event in the history of the game,” Rose said in a statement. “The positive support from my fans has been overwhelming since my banishment, and I wanted to offer my supporters and all baseball fans a chance to share an important aspect of my personal history.”

NCAAB Handicapping: Notre Dame loses Abromaitis for the year

11.30.2011     10:57 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Notre Dame at Gonzaga 11.5 O/U 137

Tough break for Notre Dame with forward Tim Abromaitis out for the season with a knee injury. Abromaitis was suspended for Notre Dame's first four games and played in only two games so the team should be somewhat adjusted to not having him on the court. The Irish didn't look very sharp in their 29-point loss to Missouri and 4-point loss as favorites to Georgia (Abromaitis played in both games). In those two tilts and against Detroit – Notre Dame's only real competition – the offense produced scores of 59, 58 and 57. Tonight they travel to Gonzaga who opened as a 10-point favorite but bet up to -11.5. The Irish will also face Maryland and Indiana before starting Big East play.

NCAA Hoops Betting: New Mexico hopes to avoid post Thanksgiving tournament blues

11.30.2011     10:27 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Idaho State at New Mexico -21.5 O/U 136.5

We saw over the past two days that teams coming off of Thanksgiving tournaments were not particularly sharp. Tennessee lost at Oakland on Monday and Michigan and Duke got smoked last night after all three played in Maui. Upstart St. Louis swept all three games at the 76 Classic in Anaheim but lost outright as 9-point road favorites last night at Loyola Marymount. Tonight will mark the fourth game in seven days for New Mexico as the Lobos returned from California on Monday afternoon. Idaho State shouldn't pose much of a challenge but covering three touchdowns could prove difficult for a fatigued team.

“We can’t allow it to be,” UNM coach Steve Alford told the Journal on Tuesday. “It’s a challenge, but the guys have to perform at a high level with a quick

College Football Handicapping: Teams potentially playing for exercise

11.30.2011     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The final week of the college football regular season and we take a look at those teams in "playing for exercise" situations. Note that final games (especially at home) can sometimes provide a boost in effort. Also factor in the inflated pointspreads with many of these games projected to be significant mismatches.

UNLV +38.5 at TCU - The Rebels have been halfway competitive at home with wins over Colorado State and Hawaii. They also were tied with San Diego State last week in the third quarter only to allowed 17 unanswered points and miss out on the pointspread cover (+16.5). But back on the road however, where they are on an 11-37 ATS run, it is hard to imagine much of an effort. TCU can clinch the Mountain West title with a win so the Horned Frogs will be at least somewhat motivated. TCU has won the last three games in the series by scores of 48-6, 41-0 and 44-14.

Idaho +20 at Nevada - The Vandals may have given their best effort of the season last week in a demoralizing 49-42 OT home loss to Utah State. Concerns here though for the home side as Nevada saw its WAC title hopes come crashing down with back-to-back Read more

NFL Handicapping: Offensive performances and run game success Week 12

11.30.2011     07:48 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by blog entry.
The top Week 12 offensive performances in victory included the Saints (577 yards, 8.4 yards per play), Patriots (477, 6.4), Redskins (416, 6.4) and Bengals (389, 6.0). Poor offensive performances in defeat included the 49ers (170, 3.1), Vikings (226, 4.3), Seahawks (250, 4.0), Chiefs (252, 4.0), Jaguars (255, 3.6), Rams (272, 4.9) and Browns (274, 4.2).  The Redskins finally snapped a seven-game losing streak and rushed for 110 yards after running for 69, 61, 52, 26, 92 and 42 yards the previous six games.

Teams that rushed for 150 or more yards went 5-1 SU and 5-1 ATS. Teams that rush for at least 150 yards and outrush their opponent cover the pointspread 77% of the time, while teams that rush for 175 yards or more are 35-5 SU and 32-7-1 ATS (82%). Being able to handicap and project which teams will have a meaningful rushing advantage (say, 30 or more yards) will lead you to more pointspread winners, as teams with that type of advantage cover the pointspread approximately 75% of the time historically, and 76% of the time thus far this season (I have a data base for over 10 years to prove it).
The Bears rushed for 172 yards to just 73 for the Read more

College Basketball Free Play: BYU Cougars vs. Northern Arizona Lumberjacks

Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
BYU -15 vs. Northern Arizona O/U 138
Recommendation: BYU

It is going to be a rough season for Northern Arizona. Not only did the Lumberjacks lose all-everything Cameron Jones (20.1 ppg), but also his wingman, returning starter Gabe Rodgers (13.0 ppg, 46.8 3-point), who has yet to play this season with a shoulder injury. Add in Eric Platt (10.1 ppg, 46.0% 3-point) and Shane Johannsen (9.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and all the Lumberjacks are left with is starting point guard Stallon Saldivar – the team's last scoring option last season. The results thus far have shown just how much of a drop-off there has been with losses by 17, 19, 12 and 20 to mediocre DI competition – none of which in BYU's class. Even without Jimmer, BYU has shown the ability to outclass opponents with blowout wins over Longwood, Prairie View and Nevada, And forget about home court advantage. NAU has little to no fan base (740 was the average attendance last season, and that was with a Read more

College Basketball Pointspread News: Arkansas short on depth, freshmen heavy

11.30.2011     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Arkansas is down to nine scholarship players as first-year head coach Mike Anderson has being using multiple freshmen to fill his rotation. The first-year players have carried much of the load through five games but the competition will stiffen starting Saturday with a road trip to UConn followed by another road game at Oklahoma. But before the Razorbacks start prepping for the Huskies, they must first get past non-boarded Mississippi Valley State tonight in Fayetteville. The Delta Devils reportedly start five seniors and have already hung with the likes of Notre Dame (lost by 13), De Paul (lost by 10) and South Carolina (lost by 4). It will be interesting to see if Anderson's continues to employ his "40 Minutes of Hell" philosophy with such a limited about of depth and experience.

"I thought (the freshmen) took the tempo up another level and kept the crowd into it. That's what I'm looking for - deflections, diving on the floor, taking charges, dunks, great passing. It was good to see that and it's exciting

NCAA Basketball Betting News: Minnesota adjusts lineup for frontcourt injuries

11.30.2011     05:54 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Virginia Tech at Minnesota -2.5 O/U 134

Minnesota will be without the services of forward Trevor Mbakwe (14.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg) who was lost for the season with an ALC injury. Mbakwe was without question the team's top performer thus far. Also banged up is center Ralph Sampson III, who has been a non-factor the last two games with an ankle injury (questionable for tonight). The frontcourt duo combined for nearly 13 rebounds per game and well above 50% from the floor. According to head coach Tubby Smith, the Golden Gophers will have to go with a more "small ball" lineup moving forward.

"We won't change much, we just won't have that inside presence that Trevor gave us because I'm still not sure about Ralph's status," Smith said at the press conference. "(Sampson) didn't practice yesterday, and he probably won't practice today, so he may

The heck with common sense! History screams bet the Colts this weekend

11.29.2011     11:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Yeah, it's the NFL, were parity thrives, but we were a bit shocked to see that since 1991, only nine teams have been favored by 20 or more points in a game. In fact, from 1994 to 2006, no team was favored by that amount. During New England's 16-0 regular season in 2007, they were big chalk on four occasions (0-4 ATS). Overall, teams laying -20 or more are 9-0 SU but only 2-7 ATS. Sounds like a reason to take +20.5 with Indy this weekend at New England, right? Absolutely! Give us quarterback Dan Orlovsky on the road for the max please. We promise this is our last Colts-related blog post of the year...unless they win in Foxboro. That would be pretty cool.

Bettor complains about USC-Utah outcome and it somehow pays off

A disgruntled bettor fought the sportsbooks and surprisingly the sportsbooks didn't win. Some dude who bet $100 on the infamous USC-Utah game complained to the Nevada Gaming Control Board about not being able to cash his 2nd half ticket on the Trojans. Last week he got a check in the mail for $200.

“I’ve lost plenty of money in casinos over the years,” Frith said. “It seems only fair that they actually pay on the occasions I do win.”

College Football Handicapping: Michigan State comfortable with underdog role

11.29.2011     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Michigan State vs. Wisconsin -9.5 O/U 54.5

Michigan State isn't fazed by its underdog status for Saturday's Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin. The Spartans have beaten the Badgers each of the last two years – both as underdogs. MSU has been installed as an underdog four times this season and posted two outright wins (Wisconsin and Ohio State). The two losses came at Notre Dame and Nebraska.

“No, it doesn’t surprise me,” Michigan State senior safety Trenton Robinson said of the point spread. “Every game we go into, it’s been the same thing for as long as I can remember. Every game that we go into, we are the underdogs. Everybody says that Michigan State’s going to lose by this and that amount.

“We just go out

College Basketball Gambling: Maryland Terrapins struggling to compete

11.29.2011     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Illinois -4 at Maryland O/U 133

The transition from Gary Williams to Mark Turgeon continues to be a challenge for the Maryland Terrapins. Turgeon is no Bobby Knight, but he demands a lot of out his kids, especially on defense. When players buy into what he is selling, positive results typically follow. Unfortunately, Turgeon and his players currently aren't on the same page. They've tried to slow down the pace of the game in order to mask their shortage of depth (seven scholarship players). And freshman starting point guard Nick Faust was a shooting guard as recently as October. Turgeon voiced his concern for tonight's matchup as Illinois goes 10-11 deep. Read more

Arizona at New Mexico State -3.5 O/U 143

Following back-to-back 57-point outputs, Arizona plans on making some adjustments for tonight's game at New Mexico State. The Wildcats fell behind early to San Diego State and Mississippi State and head coach Sean Miller said that that particular starting five "will never start another game (together) at Arizona." That likely means one of Arizona's highly regarded freshmen will move into the lineup. NMSU opened as a 1.5-point favorite but were bet up to a current number of -3.5.

College Basketball Handicapping: Ken Pomeroy favors Big Ten over ACC

11.29.2011     06:17 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Ken Pomeroy does he best to explain the potential outcomes of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. According to Pomeroy's numbers, the Big Ten is "favored" in nine of the 12 matchups with a 7-5 being the most likely result. He notes however that for whatever reason, Wisconsin is favored at North Carolina and Virginia Tech's odds are increased with Minnesota big man Trevor Mbakwe (14.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg) out for the year with a torn ACL. In terms of the pointspreads for today's matchups, the Big Ten is favored in four of the six with Clemson at Iowa a pick 'em and Michigan a 2-point road underdog vs. Virginia. We've seen a small move towards the Big Ten as The Greek posted ACC -220/Big Ten +180 yesterday but now showing ACC -200/ Big Ten +170.
