College Basketball Gambling Preview: Temple Owls at Toledo Rockets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Temple at Toledo +11.5 O/U 139
Recommendation: Toledo

Toledo (6-1) is much improved this year following back-to-back 4-28 seasons including just one win in the MAC both seasons. As such, they get little notice and as we know the public has a tough time betting on bad teams. However, these are the type of teams that can beat the bookmaker more consistently as perception does not always meet reality. Toledo has an impact freshman point guard in Julius Brown averaging 14 ppg and nearly 5 assists per contest. Guard Dominique Buckley is a first year Toledo transfer averaging 13 ppg and hitting 50% FG overall and from the arch. A pair of players that transferred from Green Bay completes the transformation as starters with forward Matt Smith scoring 11 ppg and No. 2 in rebounds while swingman Rian Pearson leads the Rockets in scoring (17ppg) and rebounding (7). Smith (66%) and Pearson (56%) are both solid shooters on the inside thus far. The biggest improvement for Read more

We typically don't give a hoot who wins the Heisman but how is Brandon Weeden or Case Keenum not among the finalists? Honey Badger got an invite, thanks in part to being called Honey Badger. Robert Griffin is your prohibited favorite at -950 according to The Greek.

Really rich casino exec doesn't like the idea of online gambling

12.07.2011     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sheldon Adelson, the 78-year-old CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., says that he is “morally opposed” to online gambling. Adelson's reasoning? Technology isn't sophisticated enough to prevent kids from betting online. This of course is just one man's opinion. That man though happens to be worth over $20 billion and dudes like that tend to have a lot of pull. The rest of the Sands Corp. has yet to offer an official opinion on the matter.

"Sheldon has long had concerns about this issue, and it is perfectly within his right to make this decision," Fahrenkopf said in a statement. "However, the AGA, at the direction of our board of directors, will continue to support federal legislation to allow states to license and regulate online poker."

NBA Handicapping: Teams will face tough challenges with schedule

12.07.2011     12:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the New York Times that breaks down the scheduling configuration for the NBA's 66-game regular season.

Every team will play at least one back-to-back-to-back set, or “triple.” Eleven teams will have the burden of doing it twice: the Nets, Atlanta, Detroit, Indiana, the Clippers, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and Washington. On Twitter, fans were complaining that none of the league’s so-called glamour teams were on that list.

Contrary to initial indications from the league, no team will have to play three triples this season. There will be 42 triples in all, 24 fewer than the league needed in 1999, when teams played 50 games in 90 days. Some teams will play five games in six nights, which also had not been done since 1999.

Throughout the NFL season, Fairway Jay provides a look at weekly box scores, stats and how to utilize the numbers and situations for success. For over a decade, Jay has kept a proprietary database of statistical information and utilized relevant rushing numbers and statistical guidelines to better assist him in sports investing and providing pointspread winners. Fairway Jay is a recognized leader in NFL handicapping and you can follow his articles and insight in the Sportsmemo daily blog and on Twitter: @FairwayJay

The top Week 13 offensive performances in victory included the Packers (449 yards, 5.8 yards per play), Ravens (448, 5.7), Chargers (443, 8.0), Saints (438, 7.2), 49ers (389, 6.2), Broncos (386, 6.9) and Panthers (385, 6.1). Poor offensive performances in defeat included the Rams (157, 3.2), Bears (181, 3.3), Bengals (232, 4.2) and Browns 233, 4.2).

Teams that rushed for 150 or more yards went 7-0 SU/ATS. Teams that rush for at least 150 yards and outrush their opponent are covering the point spread 79% of the time, while teams that rush for 175 yards or more are 38-5 Read more

College Basketball Free Pick: Portland Pilots at Boise State Broncos

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Boise State
Recommendation: Portland +8.5 1st half

At some point, the betting markets are going to outpace Boise State. Tonight's game against Portland opened -12 but was bet up to a rich -15. The Broncos have dominated weaker foes at home like Utah, Northridge, and Idaho State but I think they'll get a stiffer test tonight against the Pilots. Portland defeated Boise 88-79 last year and though the Pilots lost a lot from that team, they should be familiar with what Boise is going to try to accomplish. Portland has played a very tough schedule including last time out at Saint Louis. They got buried early but didn't quit in the second half and will have a much easier time making baskets tonight. Boise has the ability to wear down teams with its press and up-tempo offense and I think we'll see Portland try to come out and force the Broncos to defend. With the inflated price, I'll call for the underdog to stick around early as we make a play on the Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Weber State loses top rebounder, best defender

12.07.2011     09:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Weber State at BYU -13.5 O.U 147

No, Weber State didn't lose all-everything Damian Lillard but they lost arguably their next best thing. Senior forward Kyle Bullinger will be out 4-6 weeks with an elbow injury. Bullinger isn't much of an offensive threat but he leads the Wildcats in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and would have certainly helped out tonight in defending BYU's frontline of Noah Hartsock and Brandon Davies.

"I'm just sick to my stomach for him," Rahe said. "He epitomizes what we're all about. He's one of those kids who, if you need a tough rebound, he goes and gets it; you need to take a charge or make a big play, he does it; you need to put him on the best offensive player, and he shuts 'em down. He's our tough guy. He's our identity.

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Injuries leave Southern Miss short on depth

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Miss -6.5 at South Alabama O/U 135.5

Southern Miss (5-2) has managed to survive so far but the lack of depth is something to keep an eye on moving forward.

“We’re kind of limited,” Eustachy said. “I say it every year, we’ve got a fine line between winning and losing. If we foul, we’ve got issues. If we get hurt, we’ve got issues.

“I think our team is the most together team I’ve ever had as far as liking each other. They’re taking care of each other off the court. We could beat a really good team on any given night or we could lose a pretty average team on any given night.”

It is now illegal to leave your kid in a car while you gamble

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is funny. Pennsylvania lawmakers passed a bill that would make it a MISDEMEANOR to leave your child in a car while you wander into the casino to play nickle slots.

I know, I know, it’s freakin’ hot out and we WILL eventually get to McDonalds, but if you could just sit tight for the next three hours while I double my $50 bankroll, you got not one but TWO Happy Meals coming your way. What's that? No, you can't have the keys. Fine, you can listen to the radio but don't start the car. And make sure your sister doesn't wander off. Don't talk to anyone either. A lot of weirdoes running around here.

Fairway Jay continues to produce big college basketball profits

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed our top-rated 20* Big Drive Tuesday night; an easy over the total (142) winner as Kansas held off Long Beach State, 88-80. This total was bet up during the day to 145.5 and we were in early on not only the biggest total move of the day, but also the total that landed the furthest from the opening line; 26 points. We also cashed a winner on Long Beach State (+13.5) as part of a 4-1 night. That runs our December college basketball record to 13-2 and an overall season mark above 60%.

I’ve included the analysis of our totals selection below that was provided to regular clients and Fairway followers looking to cash in on our recent birdie binge and overall season of profit. What I did not mention in my analysis was that both Kansas and Long Beach State were hitting over 52% of their two-point shots entering the contest. Also note that sharp handicappers and bettors knew that a number of Kansas players were battling the flu and illness the past week, yet for some reason Kansas took money and we were correctly on the right side as Long Beach State played as projected against another top-rated team.

We’ll continue to ‘push the pace’ in Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Southern Miss' Fedora likely headed to North Carolina

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Miss vs. Nevada

Looks like Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora is headed to North Carolina. Most offshore sportsbooks have yet to post a line on their Hawaii Bowl matchup against Nevada (December 24). In Las Vegas, USM is -6/-6.5 favorite.

Note that there were some rumblings that the Golden Eagles were none too pleased about being shipped to Hawaii for the postseason after hammering Houston in the C-USA Championship.

“Apparently the (Liberty Bowl) felt it needed to match Big East and SEC teams in this year’s game,” Banowsky said. “It is very disappointing for the Conference and particularly for the great fans from Southern Miss given their success this season. We hope Read more

CS-Fullerton -8 at Utah O/U 139

Oddsmakers either didn't get the memo that Utah point guard Josh Watkins (17.7 ppg) was suspended or bettors are overreacting to his departure. You be the judge.
