Funny story about meeting a local bookie

01.04.2012     01:53 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Funny editorial titled: My Bookie Says "Meet Me at Arby's". It's about a rookie sports bettor's first foray with a local bookie. The initial phone conversation is spot on and something all of us at one point or another have experienced.

Tony: “A friend of mine said I should call you.”

Bookie: “All right.”

Tony: “Yeah, my friend Steve.”

Bookie: “Who’s that?”

Tony: “Steve. He said he knows you pretty good.”

Bookie: “What’s his last name?”

Tony: “Brown. Steve Brown.”

Bookie: “White guy? Kinda tall?”

Tony: “Right, right. That’s him.”

Bookie: “All right, I know him. But who are you?”

Tony: “I’m a friend of his.”

Bookie: “What kind of friend?”

Tony: “Uh, pretty good friends, I guess.”

Compass Bowl Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

Compass Bowl
SMU vs. Pittsburgh
Saturday, 10 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Pittsburgh -5.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 47
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Pittsburgh -6

Marty Otto's Betting Take: We can talk about the mess Todd Graham created this season by trying to force his offense on players that didn’t look comfortable in the system. We can talk about the mess Graham left behind when he let his team know via text message that he was leaving for Arizona State. We can also talk about the fact that SMU’s coach June Jones was on the verge of being hired by Arizona State just days prior to Graham and that he lied to his team about it. We can talk about a whole host of off-field issues that surround this game and each of them is ugly.

But we want to get to the game at hand; who’s motivated and who’s talented enough Read more

NHL Eastern Conference Mid-Season Betting Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL season nears the halfway mark so it’s time to sit down and take a look at where teams are at currently and what can we expect going forward.  There are a few surprises in the Eastern Conference so far.  We knew the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins would be playing good hockey and competing at a high level, but I don’t think too many people expected the Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, or the New York Rangers to be this solid in the early going.  I liked both the Rangers and Panthers heading into the season so their success doesn’t come as a huge shock. The Flyers though have exceeded expectations. I didn’t think we'd see their young guys grow so fast and make such an immediate impact. I figured it would take them at least a year to adapt after the major overhaul to their team this past offseason.

The major disappointment thus far has to be the Buffalo Sabres.  Despite the a handful of key injuries the first half of the season, they still should be doing more with the talent they have healthy and Ryan Miller in net. Tampa Bay has been a disappointment as well.  They haven’t strung Read more

College Basketball Free Pick: UTEP Miners at Marshall Thundering Herd

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UTEP +12 at Marshall O/U 130
Recommendation: UTEP

Marshall is expected to contend for a Conference-USA championship and that in my opinion has them a little overvalued entering league play. The Thundering Herd are a talented and experienced team and we cashed with them earlier this season in their 62-56 loss at Syracuse (+15.5). A road win at Cincinnati and home win over Belmont shows some of the strength and potential of this Marshall squad. But UTEP (8-2 ATS) is improving and playing better after a 1-4 start with outright underdog wins on a neutral court against Clemson and Auburn and a competitive contest against top-25 Kansas State. Road losses at UNLV and Oregon were also competitive covers despite being 17-point underdogs. Senior forward Gabriel McCalley is an anchor inside and young forwards Bohannon and Lang are rapidly improving while leading the team in rebounding and hitting 52% and 69% of their shots respectively. Transfer point man Jacques Streeter Read more

College Basketball Betting: Gates returns for Cincinnatii following suspension

01.04.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame at Cincinnati -7.5 O/U 131

Cincinnati welcomes back power forward Yancy Gates and center Cheikh Mbodj from suspension tonight against Notre Dame. The Bearcats have reeled off six straight wins after the infamous Xavier brawl. With Gates out, the team changed its style, favoring more of an up-tempo game. They also weren't shy about firing away from deep with 173 three-point attempts (28.8 per game, 37%). Prior to that, Cinci averaged 14.1 attempts per game. With Gates back (13.1 FG attempts per game) there is the potential it could mess up the rhythm of the team's offense – which isn’t particularly efficient to begin with.

"It makes everything a little bit easier," said sophomore guard Sean Kilpatrick, who was named the Big East's player of the week on Monday. "We know a lot of (defenses') attention will be brought to the middle, and Read more

Vegas buddies win this year's Hilton NFL SuperContest

01.04.2012     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
Final recap of this year's Hilton NFL SuperContest. A group of Las Vegas friends took home the top prize of $320K on the strength of a 58-22-5 ATS record.

"We're a diverse group, so we all have a different point of view and way of handicapping, so we didn't have all favorites or all underdogs but a nice mix every week," Kannon said. The foursome each made a pick a week with one person charged with making two. "Paul was our leadoff man as 'the deuce,' and he also had the two plays in Week 17. I was the No. 2 hitter, James was in the three-hole, and Rob was the cleanup hitter."

"Everybody was watching the games with playoff spots on the line, and we were watching the sh---iest game cheering for the Jaguars," Oseland said.

College Basketball Free Play: Texas Tech Red Raiders at Oklahoma State Cowboys

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas Tech +11.5 at Oklahoma State O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Texas Tech

I keep reading articles about how Oklahoma State's tough non-conference schedule is going to pay dividends down the road but I see it helping them grind out a close win on the road, not beating teams by double-digits. Since victories over bottom feeders Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Cowboys are 4-6 SU with two wins in overtime and the other two by three and five. You can certainly make and argument that all ten of those opponents are better than Texas Tech but Texas-San Antonio, Tulsa and SMU aren’t too far removed. The Red Raiders took their lumps early on and will continue to do so when asked to step up in class in the Big XII. You look at their resume and there isn't one win to get excited about. But I look at two factors: One, they have been in every game with the exception of a 16-point loss at Oral Roberts. Second, I'm a firm believer in Read more

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Memphis yet to live up to preseason expectations

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Memphis -8.5 O/U 146.5

Good article on the Perception vs. Reality of the Memphis Tigers. They play host to Tennessee tonight after beating the Vols 99-97 in double overtime at the Maui Classic. Both squads open conference play on Saturday.

Through 13 games, the Tigers rank 11th among the 12 C-USA teams in scoring defense, allowing 70.9 points per game (they’re second in offense with 77.8 points scored). Remarkably, Memphis is second in the league (behind Tulane) in field-goal percentage defense, its opponents shooting just 38.2 percent. Trouble is, the Tigers are giving up a lot of shots (812, or 98 more than the Green Wave, a team that has played one more game than Memphis). The Tigers are dead last in C-USA in opponents’ rebounds (37.4).

College Basketball Betting: Duquesne opens A-10 play without leading scorer, rebounder

01.04.2012     05:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Joe's at Duquesne -1 O/U 148

Duquesne will be without the service of swingman BJ Monterio for tonight's conference opener vs. St. Joe's. Monterio, who just earned A-10 Player of the Week honors and is the Dukes' leading scorer and rebounder, was injured during a New Year's Eve fracas – he reportedly wasn't involved.

As for the injury, Monteiro received stitches in his left hand and chin, the result, as stated in the DU press release, “as the result of being inadvertently hit by a bottle after an argument broke out between two nearby individuals at an establishment on Pittsburgh’s South Side on New Year’s Eve.”
