NBA Gambling: New York Knicks having trouble stopping the opposition

01.06.2012     12:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A rough start to the season for the New York Knicks who despite that offseason acquisition of Tyson Chandler remain defensively challenged. They tried to install a new defensive system during the preseason but due to the lockout, it’s been ineffective. To improve, the team needs practice time but there won't be much of it this season with so many games on the slate.

“It takes time to be a good defensive team,” Chandler said, per The New York Times. “We just have to dedicate ourselves to get there.”

"Games are just piling on us, it's hard to get practice time and get on the floor, get live bodies moving and simulate a game. It's almost impossible to do right now, so we have to buckle down mentally and try to accomplish it that way," he said.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Indiana Pacers at Boston Celtics

Indiana +6 at Boston O/U 186.5
Recommendation: Indiana

We’re in action underdog style tonight, and let’s see if we can beat Boston with a Fairway Forecast Free Play. The Celtics (4-3) are giving it one more go with their veteran and aging core of Garnett, Allen and Pierce. Along with veteran center Jermaine O’Neal in the middle, we’ll see how they hold up with the shortened schedule and more back-to-backs. Boston has rattled off four-straight wins against bottom feeders New Jersey, Detroit and Washington twice, but they are no longer an elite team. Allen participated in the shoot around this morning and will play after missing the last game with the flu. The Pacers (4-3) have shown solid strength defensively against a soft slate until they were exposed by the Heat last game; just as Boston was against Miami in late December. But Indiana is strong and balanced with power players up front in Hibbert, Hansbrough, Granger and West. The back court is improved and Read more

College Basketball Betting: UConn's Calhoun returns, wants to see better defense

01.06.2012     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn head coach Jim Calhoun returns to the sidelines on Saturday after a three-game suspension. The Huskies went 2-1 in his absence though Calhoun was none too pleased with his team's defensive effort in a 75-63 loss to Seton Hall. That could spell trouble for Rutgers who has struggled to score against quality competition all season.

"I was really surprised that we're just getting looser on defense," he said according to TheDay.com. "… We just played very poorly offensively. We're proving once again that we have some work to do. … We needed leadership out of the backcourt and we didn't get it. We needed some of the veterans, Alex (Oriakhi) and Roscoe (Smith) and Shabazz (Napier) to step up and that didn't happen. So that's disappointing."

Oddsmaker weighs in on this weekend's NFL Playoffs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some quotes on this weekend's NFL Playoffs from Wynn oddsmaker John Avello courtesy of ESPN.

Cincinnati-Houston: "...The homefield can't be worth more than three for either side. T.J. Yates is a better option than Jake Delhomme. But when they play with him they never score more than 20 points. It's a tough call. We are at three minus-120 with the juice and I wont go further. My next move is to minus-3.5."

Detroit-New Oreleans: "...The Lions can score with anyone, too. I could see this game coming back down, some group will release this game as a play and everyone will play it."

Atlanta-NY Giants: "...I think the public thinks this Atlanta team is much better than the Cowboys and it is the same spread. Pretty soon I will go to 2.5."

Pittsburgh-Denver: "We are actually at 8.5, there will be a lot of teaser money, people will tease the Steelers down to one to win the game, that is why I opened it at eight. This game is going to be bet under, we are at 34 after opening Read more

NFL Handicapping: High scoring offenses in the playoffs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I recently posted a blog about the Saints-Lions playoff match-up which features a posted total of 59 points; the highest total in NFL playoff history. Both teams ranked in the top-4 in scoring this season.  In fact, there were three teams that scored at least 500 points during the regular season; the Packers (560), Saints (547) and Patriots (513).

But did you know that since the 1984 season, only 15 teams have scored at least 500 points in the regular season?  That includes the three potent offensive teams mentioned above.  So how have those offensive juggernauts done in the playoffs?  The previous 12 teams averaged over 39 ppg in their first playoff game and those contests were 9-2-1 OVER the total. If the posted total was at least 50 points, the games went 6-0-1 to the OVER.

The bookmakers knew what they were doing when he posted the highest total in NFL playoff history. Yet bettors are not slowing down in their support of the Saints in a shootout, and may push this total to 60 by kickoff. Read more

NBA Handicapping: Phoenix hasn't been able to play at desired pace

01.06.2012     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland -2.5 at Phoenix O/U 193

Phoenix has been saying all season it wants to get back to its run-and-gun ways but heading into tonight's game against Portland, the Suns rank 23rd in the league in possessions per game. One of the reasons they haven’t been able to get out in transition is the crazy amount of offensive rebounds they’ve allowed.

"We would like to get the pace up," point guard Steve Nash said. "We've had stretches where it's pretty good but overall it's not that good.

"(Giving up offensive rebounds) hurts it for sure by spending a fairly good percentage more time on your defensive end."

"If you give up 20 (offensive rebounds), that's 20 times you don't get to run," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said.

NFL Playoffs: Bettors supporting New Orleans Saints in shootout

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sports bettors are expecting a shootout at the Superdome Saturday when the Saints host the Lions in the NFC Divisional round. Bookmakers are aware of the Saints’ success at home this season – a perfect 8-0 SU/ATS while averaging 41 ppg. The Saints scored 547 points this season (33.2 ppg); just behind Green Bay’s 560 points. The Lions averaged 29 ppg this season, and with a pair of 5,000 yard passers including Drew Brees’ record-setting 5,487 passing yards, there’s no doubt we’ll see plenty of passing and big plays through the air.
Despite the inflated side and total, public bettors are not holding back in their support of the Saints to win in a high-scoring shootout. Currently over 80% of the public is betting OVER the total with nearly 60% siding with the Saints. Some interesting trends and historical data are working against New Orleans supporters. Since 2003, teams that won at least 13 games in the regular season are 7-14 ATS in their first playoff game. In that same time frame, teams with more wins that their opponent have cashed just 42% of the time in opening round playoff games. Also since 2003, teams that average at least 30 ppg are Read more

Bettors treated to the old 6-on-5 during UL-Lafayette-Western Kentucky game

01.06.2012     05:54 AM     Printer Friendly
From watching the video, it didn't really matter, but how do you not notice six players on the floor if you are a ref/coach/player/fan/announcer/ball boy? In football, it always feels like there are two small armies running around but if a 12th man even thinks about stepping in the field, yellow flags are flying. Anyway, people started catching on after the the game was called final. And of course the 72-70 final (in OT) was right around the closing betting line. According to CRIS, ULL opened -2.5, was bet up to -3 but money came in on WKU and the line dropped to a pick 'em. Lafayette eventually closed as a 1.5-point favorite.
