Handicapper Fairway Jay spots the Most Improved Teams in college basketball

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here is a list of under the radar teams that have shown significant improvement from KenPom’s preseason rankings to current play as of January 13, 2012. I note this along with each team’s current SU record, ATS results and (wins) last year. Also included is each team’s adjusted defensive ranking by KenPom, as many improvements can be traced to a stronger commitment on the defensive end of the floor along with improved rebounding.  We cashed a top-rated 20* Big Drive play on Western Illinois last night in its 71-70 double OT loss to Summit League leader Oral Roberts. Like many of the teams listed below, their defense is improved and providing strength in numbers; both SU and ATS. While the secret is out for some of these squads, note that everyone on the list has been a money-maker ATS; many with huge profit-producing results.

NCAA Basketball Betting Free Pick: Penn Quakers at Columbia Lions

Pennsylvania at Columbia -1.5 O/U 123.5
Recommendation: Under

We continued our remarkable run in college basketball with a pair of Big Drive winners last night on Western Illinois and Arkansas-Little Rock. Since the end of November, the run is 25-4 on our top-rated Big Drive college basketball plays. Time to join the profit-producing party!

We passed on Friday’s card from a service perspective, but here is a Fairway Free Forecast that is part of my personal betting interests. Ivy League play tips off tonight with Columbia (11-5) winning 11 of its last 12 games. As I often discuss, the improvement starts with defense, and the Lions rank 81st in KenPom’s adjusted defensive rankings after finishing 226th last season. Their effective field goal defense is also significantly improved this season (41st, 44%). Columbia is a slow-down team with an adjusted tempo ranking of 284 out of 345 which has assisted in a 2-5 O/U mark this season. One of Read more

College Basketball Free Play: Missouri State Bears at Northern Iowa Panthers

Missouri State +6 at Northern Iowa O/U 128
Recommendation: Missouri State

Northern Iowa has been really struggling of late, dropping four of its past six games. Two of the losses (Ohio and Evansville) came at the McLeod Center which has been one of the better home venues in the country over the past few seasons.  The Panthers did bounce back with two wins before losing a close game at Creighton last time out. Missouri State on the other hand has been playing solid basketball. They have won four of their last five, including road wins at Creighton and Indiana State. Missouri State has not missed a beat without head coach Cuonzo Martin, as new leader Paul Lusk has implemented his system smoothly while emphasizing the same defense first approach as Martin. This should be a typical Missouri Valley Conference game with both teams with a shot in the final minutes. As such, six points in too high as we fire away with the underdog.

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Coyotes at Columbus Blue Jackets

Phoenix -115 at Columbus O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

We cashed an UNDER ticket with Phoenix on the road last night in Detroit and we’ll use the same play for their game in Columbus this evening.  I mentioned yesterday the Coyotes’ lack of scoring on the road of late and I’m expecting the trend to continue against the Blue Jackets.  At first glance this Columbus team is very poor defensively (3.29 goals per game allowed, 29th), but upon closer examination we find that there is a bit of home/road dichotomy to the numbers. At home, Columbus allows a league average 2.60 gpg which has resulted in 13 of 19 games going UNDER the total. The Blue Jackets will be very limited offensively tonight with three top offensive producers (Jeff Carter, RJ Umberger, and Kristian Huselius) all out due to injury.  Add in the previous injury to offensive defenseman James Wisniewski – he’s missed the last five games due to an ankle injury – and you are left with a team starving for offense.  All signs point to a low scoring game where both teams will have to rely on their defense to win.  Lay the juice and Read more

Princeton -1 at Cornell O/U 124.5

New and notes on tonight's Ivy League opener between Princeton and Cornell. Tonight will mark the eighth straight road game against a DI opponent for the Tigers. Cornell meanwhile has been hammered by injuries with 74 player games already lost.

“I feel like we’re in a slightly better position now than we were a month ago,” Princeton coach Mitch Henderson said the other day. “We had a rough start (1-5).

“What we’re seeing now is more balance; certainly on the offensive end. We’ve gotten good production out of Ian Hummer and Doug Davis, but the rest of the team is

NBA Handicapping: San Antonio's defense continues to falter

Portland at San Antonio -1.5 O/U 193.5

Following last night's 106-103 loss to Milwaukee, San Antonio dropped to 26th in FG% defense and 23rd in points per game allowed.

“That just won’t get anything done,” Popovich said. “That will portend a very mediocre basketball season for the San Antonio Spurs.”

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Duncan said. “We’ve got a long ways to go to get to where we believe the Spurs’ defense should be.”

College Basketball Betting: South Florida continues play at off-campus arena

Seton Hall -1 at South Florida O/U 120

Telling quote from a South Florida player on the feeling of having to play home games at an off-campus arena while the Sun Dome undergoes repairs.

"It's like playing an away game every single night," junior forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick said.

Head coach Stan Heath downplayed the minor inconvenience and to the Bulls' credit, they've gone 7-1 "away" from home this year.

"The pluses by far outweigh the minuses," USF coach Stan Heath said of the Bulls' hybrid home-court arrangement this season. "We're going to play in a fantastic building next season. I can't complain about it a whole lot.

"Maybe it would be different if we had lost a lot of games," said Heath, whose team is 7-1 at the

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Scoring in the Missouri Valley on the rise

Article on the increase in scoring in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. The league is collectively averaging over 70 ppg – nearly 5 ppg higher than a season ago.

"We have some amazing talent in the league right now, some of the best I've seen," said Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovic. "We're in year five and just shaking our heads with some of these guys. There is some high, high level talent in the league this year."

"You can let it rip and run when you have better players. When you have lesser players, you want fewer possessions from my perspective," said Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall. "Creighton is playing really fast, they're doing a great job running. Illinois State is running. Evansville has a lot of guys who can shoot the ball."
