College Basketball Free Play: Villanova Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals

01.25.2012     10:23 AM     Alatex Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Alatex Sports blog entry.
Villanova +9.5 at Louisville O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Villanova

Since losing at home to South Florida on January 5th, Villanova seems to have made some major improvements. The young team is picking up on what it takes to play in the Big East, and their talent is emerging. As a result, they are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS since that loss, and faced three of the top teams in the league during that stretch. Maalik Wayns has become a star at the point and freshman Jayvaughn Pinkston is rapidly improving on the block. They are a team that could be a money maker down the stretch, and judging by tonight’s line, no one has caught on to their improvements. Louisville is off a win at Pitt in which Kyle Kuric returned to lead them on the offense, but this is still a flawed team. They are 15-5 on the season, but just 3-5 in their last eight games since the schedule got tougher. Underdog has some value here.

Online gambling and social media develop logical partnership

01.25.2012     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly
Social media is quickly becoming a hub for online gambling and interactive companies are looking to cash in. Reno's International Game Technology (they make slots) is working out a deal with Double Down Interactive worth upwards of $500 million.

Double Down Casino draws millions of monthly Facebook users, who play poker, blackjack and slots for virtual rewards such as free chips to keep playing. Hart said acquiring Double Down is IGT’s entry into the rapidly growing world of social online gaming. She said she thought social gaming with virtual currency could “peacefully coexist” with IGT’s core business of catering to gamblers and casinos.

“This is our effort to move outside of the current restrictions that we are all battling to participate in an experience that is different in the actual way the financial transaction takes place,” Hart said.

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Big Ten Coaches Teleconference

Submitted by blog entry.
Part of my success in handicapping college basketball and delivering positive and profitable pointspread prognosis is listening to college coaches’ weekly teleconferences and picking up information that goes beyond the box scores, stats or even scheduling situations. Coaches may give you additional injury information or comment on their recent play, changes in style or how to handle an upcoming opponent. I’m always looking for additional nuggets and information that don’t necessarily show up in the box scores or translate to the betting line. Some of the conversation can be general discussion or overview, but at times I find it helpful to not only hear the coach discuss his teams play and upcoming opponent, but also provide their insight into player personnel, style of play or even analyze their team’s recent energy, effort and level of play.

Here are some quotes from this week’s Big Ten Coaches Teleconference. The Big Ten is arguably the best conference in the nation this season, and according to Kenpom rankings, currently No. 1. I also believe the Big Ten has the finest collection of coaches in the country with John Beilein, Bill Carmody, Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Eastern Michigan first half betting trend

01.25.2012     06:54 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by blog entry.
I recently came across an interesting note and trend on a first half money-maker this season. I identified this team and situation early season, but must admit I did not follow through consistently betting the Eastern Michigan totals after a few cashes early season. Many college basketball bettors do not wager on first half lines, but come the second half, bettors often fire away at the adjusted halftime lines. Here’s another situation and streak that may get you to dig deeper into totals, pace ratings and the many ways and opportunities in betting and beating college basketball.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles have produced a remarkable over/under run on first half wagering this season; now 15-0 UNDER the total following last night’s game at Buffalo. What’s interesting is that only one of the 15 lined games had a first half total of 60 or more points, and 9 of the 15 games had a posted total of 122 points or less.  The Eagles record is 9-11 this season but 4-2 in the Western Division of the MAC.

Of the 338 college basketball teams, Eastern Michigan ranks 337th in adjusted tempo and 333rd in adjusted offensive efficiency. The Eagles average Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Betting: New England Patriots hope to learn from SB XLII loss

01.25.2012     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It occurred four years ago, but the New England Patriots are hoping to learn from their Super Bowl XLII loss to New York. The Boston Globe lists the 5 Things That Went Wrong during the game and what changes have taken place for the Pats since then.

1. The Patriots couldn't protect Tom Brady
2. Running game was a non-factor
3. There was too little diversification in the passing game
4. The defensive backs were ineffective
5. The pressure of chasing the perfect season was too great

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: Bettors gear up for release of prop bets

Hoping to get a hold of the LVH's (new name for the Las Vegas Hilton) prop bets for Super Bowl XLVI. There are expected to be as many as 325 for bettors to choose from. Last year props were posted on the Thursday afternoon after the conference championships.

“The professionals do bet on props but the handle taken in from the public masses that flock to Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend far outweighs the smart money.”

Boise State is down another starter after Jeff Elorriaga broke his thumb and will miss the remainder of the season. The Broncos play host to UNLV tonight.

“He’s kind of a cornerstone of our program and a guy I’ve trusted on the floor to keep things together and help run the team,” Rice said. “He’s playing more minutes than anybody, and now he’s out.”

Wichita State center Garrett Stutz could miss a second straight game with a strained rhomboid muscle. The 7-footer is currently listed as questionable/game time decision. The Shockers are big favorites over a surging Evansville squad that has won three straight.

“They [Evansville] really scrap and fight, even though they’re a little undersized,” Marshall said. “They’re constantly in there trying to take charges and make you throw the ball away. Taylor is

Las Vegas Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay discusses Kansas' home court advantage (-5/-5.5), teams that have no home court advantage (TCU) and the recent Kansas-Baylor matchup in which the Jayhawks cruised to a 92-74 victory in Lawrence. Article from

“Probably five, five-and-a-half points,” said Kornegay, who has been working in Las Vegas for 23 years. “That’s maybe a tad above average for a Kansas team during the Bill Self era.”

“There are certain schools that actually don’t have a home-court advantage,” Kornegay said. “There’s just nobody there. I know it’s kind of hard for you guys out in Kansas to picture that, but TCU’s a prime example.”

“I would say most of the tickets were on Baylor, no doubt about it,” Kornegay said. “We heard them talking about it on the other side of the counter, and they were saying what we thought they would say, ‘Undefeated, ranked third. I can’t believe it. This doesn’t

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: Players like Sterling Moore help fuel Patriots

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
There’s only one reason that the New England Patriots, not the Baltimore Ravens, are in the Super Bowl.  That reason?  Unheralded, undrafted rookie free agent Sterling Moore made the game saving play, knocking the ball out of Baltimore wide receiver Lee Evans’ hands in the end zone, negating what would have been the game winning Ravens touchdown in the closing seconds.

Moore’s story is a fascinating one.  He didn’t get any scholarship offers out of high school.  After enrolling at Laney Community College in Oakland, he tried out for the football team on a lark, as a favor for a friend.  After playing for two years at Laney, Moore moved on to SMU for his final two collegiate seasons.

Why SMU?  In Laney’s own words:  “They were the only D-I school that offered me. I felt like I could play at that level and said, ‘I might as well.’ “After a couple of undistinguished seasons with the Mustangs, he was not drafted.  But his home town team, Read more

Perhaps a better explanation for the significant line move in tonight's San Diego State-Wyoming matchup. Long story short, the Aztecs had a little trouble getting to Laramie.

"Fuel stop in Colorado," Green tweeted Tuesday morning from Grand Junction. "Next stop Wyoming. This has been one very interesting adventure ... I'm ready to play & get back to San Diego."

NBA Handicapping: Trail Blazers adjust to lack of practice, new style

Memphis at Portland -5 O/U 187

Article on the Portland Trail Blazers and their struggles with the lack of practice time and head coach Nate McMillian's desire to play at a faster tempo. The Blazers had a tough go of it on a recent six-game road trip – averaged 91 ppg, topped 100 points just once and finished 2-4 SU. A pretty strong home/road dichotomy at work with Portland shooting 46.1% and averaging 104.3 ppg at home and 40.9% and 90.4 ppg on the highway. Last night at the Rose Garden, they bounced back with a solid 101-89 win over Sacramento. Tonight, they play host to Memphis.

"Nate wants us to play fast, and we hear him," center Marcus Camby said. "We want to play fast, but for us to play fast, we have to get stops defensively."

"I think what we are finding out is we do need exhibition

NBA Handicapping: Cleveland hoping to turn things around at Miami

01.24.2012     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Cleveland at Miami -12.5 O/U 202

The fact the Cleveland has six wins at this point in the season has to be considered a fairly impressive accomplishment. But their last two games looked a lot like last year with a 39-point home loss to the Derrick Rose-less Chicago Bulls and a 27-point road loss to Atlanta. Cleveland has had two days to emotionally recover and is eager for a bounce back performance tonight in Miami.

"We just lost two games by a substantial margin, so our focus is getting back to playing the type of basketball we were playing to start the season," said Gibson, who missed Saturday's game at Atlanta after a death in his extended family. "It's definitely a big game for us -- because of what's happened the last two games. We really want to go out and play well."

"We plan to get it back on track," Gibson said.

Super Bowl XLVI Betting Tips: New England Patriots first half O/U review

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

For the upcoming Super Bowl between New York and New England, the first half total currently sits at 27.5 or 28 depending on where you shop. There is a real head scratching contrast in the first half play of Patriots games this season. What’s very interesting to note is that their road games have been significantly higher scoring than those played in Foxboro. In six of their eight road games this season, New England’s first halves have totaled 27 or more points and those contests averaged 31 points. Conversely, Patriots home games resulted in 23 first half points or less seven of 10 times for an average of 21.7 points. The initial reaction to those extremely different first half point totals would be that New England’s last two games have been at home and their defense has improved of late. Therefore it stands to reason that their first half totals would average out lower. That argument sinks in immediately when you Read more

College Basketball Free Play: Bradley Braves at Southern Illinois Salukis

Bradley +7 at Southern Illinois O/U 138
Recommendation: Bradley

Why on earth is Southern Illinois laying -7 in a conference game? I understand Bradley is not very good and the Salukis are coming off a 85-42 beat down at Wichita, but this number is in my opinion way too high. Situational aside, let's look at the facts: Both teams have faced similar league schedules and have nearly identical statistical profiles. They struggle to defend on a consistent basis and have no real edge in any facet of the game. SIU has managed to pick up a few more league wins and by default deserves to be favored, but I expected to see this game lined in the -3 range. SIU won the first meeting in Peoria but shot an uncharacteristically high 57% from the floor. Unless that type of effort occurs again, I think the road team can stick around and make this a game.

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling Update: Bettors continue to flock towards Giants

01.24.2012     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly

We're about 36 hour removed from sportsbooks posting their openers for Super Bowl XLVI. Up until this point a majority of the money has come in on the New York Giants. We mentioned yesterday that most offshore shops opened with New England -3.5. Bettors however pounced on the Giants and the key number of +3.5. The line then dipped to New England -3 (-120) followed shortly thereafter by a flat -3 (-110). Then yesterday afternoon another wave of Giants money came in dropping the line to New England -3 (+105/EV)/New York +3 (-125/-120). There are even a few offshore shops (5Dimes, BetOnline) currently offering the Pats at -2.5 (-125). Pinnacle's dropdown menu has New England -2.5 (-120). In Las Vegas, every major sportsbook is showing New England -3 (EV or -105).

NCAA Basketball Betting: Kentucky not facing enough adversity according to Calipari

01.24.2012     06:16 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Kentucky -12.5 at Georgia O/U 130

Kentucky head coach John Calipari is a smart man and during a recent interview basically said that his team actually needs to lose in order to better prepare themselves for the postseason. Unfortunately for Calipari, that has only occurred once this year; back on December 10 at Indiana. Since then, UK has ripped off 11th straight including five in the SEC. Last year, there were points during the SEC season where the Cats were 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5. They peaked at the right time though and didn't lose a game from February 26 until a one-point loss to eventual champ UConn in the Final Four.

I like our will to win down the stretch. In all these close games you're gonna start getting nipped. You know what I told them last night Tony? We met at my house. I said ‘we probably need to get beat so you guys will

Gambling on Super Bowl XLVI: Tom Brady vs. New York Giants defense

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

As we approach Super Bowl XLVI, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady against the New York Giants pass rush presents a fascinating matchup.  In the 2008 Super Bowl, the Giants were clearly able to frustrate Brady as New England’s vaunted offense was held to 14 points and under 300 totla yards.  Much has changed over the last four years, but Brady was banged around and lacking confidence once again in their Week 9 loss (24-20) to the Giants.  In fact, while watching that game it was one of the few times I’d witnessed Brady lose some of his composure. For good measure, Brady was sickened with his play in the AFC championship game against the sturdy Baltimore defense.

"As time goes on, I still can’t watch highlights from that game," Brady said this morning in his
