Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill lives up to its name

02.15.2012     02:33 PM     Printer Friendly

Back in November, we blogged about the opening of Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill, which in a nut shell is a place people go to shorten their lives by a few days. Shocking that it took this long, but on Saturday, The HAG actually had a patron suffer a heart attack. Because the gentlemen reportedly survived the incident, feel free to let out a chuckle. But seriously, if you are going to eat there, make it a once a year event, and be sure to jog home afterwards. Actually, that may be a bad idea. Drive home, rest, let your blood pressure return to normal, and THEN go on a jog.

Oddsmakers drop New York Knicks' odds to win the NBA Championship

02.15.2012     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The betting public just loves a good story, especially one with the potential to have a very profitable outcome. The New York Knicks have seen their NBA title odds drop from 50-1 to 25-1 during the recent wave of Linsanity. The Knicks are in eight place of the Eastern Conference yet sport the eighth-best odds to win it all.

“They’ve been supported in the last week pretty heavily so the liability adds up,” Jeff Sherman, the LVH assistant sports book manager, said in a telephone interview. “Between the Lin phenomenon, the Knicks on a winning streak, bettering their position and the money we’ve seen coming across the window, it’s a combination that causes them to go down.”

“Now the question is how is Lin and Carmelo and Stoudemire going to mix together,” Avello said by phone from his Las Vegas office. “What’s going to happen when we get all three of them? Is Lin going to get less shots, are they going to go back to the way the Knicks had been playing?

NBA Handicapping: Despite crazy schedules, playing time remains the same

02.15.2012     12:52 PM     Printer Friendly
As NBA handicappers and bettors, we've likely all been faced with a situation where support of a team is warranted but the potential for a coach to rest key players/veterans late in the game lessens to strength of the play. Here however is an article that debunks the theory that coaches are resting players more. In fact, the minutes allocated to each team’s top six players are pretty much identical to last year.

College Basketball Free Betting Pick: Cal Poly Mustangs at Cal-Northridge Matadors

02.15.2012     12:29 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
Cal Poly -6.5 at Cal-Northridge O/U 130.5
Recommendation: Over

Despite playing at a super slow pace, seven of Cal Poly's 12 Big West games have topped 130 points. One of the reasons behind that is the lack of quality defenses. Only two teams (Long Beach and Riverside) allow less than a point per possession in conference play. And despite its label of being defensive minded, Cal Poly has really been nothing more than average at stopping Big West opponents (102.1 ppp allowed, 5th out of 9 teams). The Big West is split into teams that play fast (Long Beach, Fullerton, Irvine, Northridge and Davis) and teams that prefer a slower tempo (Santa Barbara, Poly, Pacific and Riverside). Against the "faster" teams, Cal Poly's games produced scores of 105, 140, 116, 147, 154, 132, 144 and 151. It was contests against the "slower" teams that have kept CP’s pace number low and their defense appearing respectable (game scores: 115, 113, 112 and 106). Northridge plays up-tempo and sports the worst defense in the league. And with the exception of the 100-54 loss to Cal Poly back in late January, the Matadors somehow, someway always find a way Read more

NCAA Basketball Handicapping: Murray State was destine to eventually lose

02.15.2012     12:01 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Good blog post from ken Pomeroy on the variance in college basketball, in particular Murray State. According to Pomeroy's numbers, the Racers were never better than a 50% shot to go undefeated – a far cry from what ESPN was spewing out of its mouth. Essentially, they are a good team – the best in the OVC – but they were eventually going to lose and will inevitably lose another game or two before the end of the season.

The thing is, Murray never reached a point during the season where they were better than a 50% proposition to go unbeaten in conference. You play enough games in which you are heavily favored, and you are going to lose eventually. Put more precisely, a team that plays ten games as a 90% favorite is expected to lose once during that span, and the Racers have played a lot of such games this season, including the game against Tennessee State.

There’s lots of unexplained variance in a college basketball game. The Vegas line has long been proven to be the best predictor of outcomes, and while it has the reputation among some

NBA Handicapping: Reeling Trail Blazers lose Aldridge to ankle injury

02.15.2012     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Portland at Golden State -5.5 O/U 187

Two of the worst possible outcomes occurred last night in Portland as the Trail Blazers were blown out on their home floor by the hapless Washington Wizards 124-109 and LaMarcus Aldridge went down with an ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Aldridge didn't travel with the team to Golden State. Since opening the season 7-2 SU (6-2-1 ATS) Portland is 8-12 SU (9-11 ATS).

NCAA Basketball Gambling: New Mexico favored at San Diego State

02.15.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
New Mexico -1 at San Diego State O/U 129.5

First place on the line in the Mountain West tonight as New Mexico (20-4, 6-2 MWC) travels to San Diego State (20-4, 6-2). The Aztecs won in Albuquerque, 75-70, on January 18.

It’s a big revenge game,” Hardeman said. “But just to be playing against San Diego State is going to be big for us because they’re ranked in the top 25 and I feel this is a game we need.”

“The league changes,” Lobo head coach Steve Alford said. “Three weeks ago, this wasn’t what the league looked like. Three weeks ago we were next to last.”

Lin does it again, Knicks win sixth straight, snap eight-game ATS run

02.15.2012     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
The Linsanity continues... The Knicks won their sixth straight thanks the Jeremy Lin's three-pointer at the buzzer. Amar'e Stoudemire returned after missing four games and chipped in 21 points (8-of-22 FGs). Lin finished with a game-high 27. But despite all of the good cheer, the Knicks, who were favored by -4.5, ended their eight-game ATS streak. New York plays host to Sacramento tonight.
