College Basketball Betting Update: Alabama's Mitchell says he will return

02.16.2012     01:05 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Suspended Alabama forward Tony Mitchell announced on Twitter that he will be back. When that occurs is the question. Head coach Anthony Grant has remained quite regarding the status of Mitchell and JaMychal Green. Grant reinstated Trevor Releford and Andrew Steele prior to Tuesday's game against Florida – the Gators won 61-52. Alabama plays host to Tennessee on Saturday.

On Mitchell's Twitter page, the following messages were posted: "To all my bama fans tmitch is goin nowhere #bamatilidie" and later, "I will be back."

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls

Boston +8 at Chicago O/U 180.5
Recommendation: Boston

Make no mistake, right now, Chicago is not the type of team that should be laying eight points against another Eastern Conference contender without Derrick Rose in the lineup.  Chicago has been on the lucky side of the schedule equation with Rose sitting out with back spasms.  Rose has missed eight previous games, and Chicago is 6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS in those contests.  But when the Bulls have been asked to step up in class, it’s a different story.  Against other winning teams, without Rose in the lineup, the Bulls are 0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS including a four-point loss as road favorites at Boston this past weekend.

Chicago struggled defensively in that loss to the Celtics, allowing 49% shooting from the floor.  They struggled defensively again versus lowly Sacramento on Tuesday, allowing the Kings to score a season high 115 points on 47% shooting.  With a losing ATS mark at home this season, this price Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks at California Golden Bears

Oregon +11 at California 139.5
Recommendation: Oregon

I think we can take advantage of all of the damage Cal handed out to opponents on its home court during the non-conference and step in and play a surging Oregon squad as a double-digit underdog. A closer look at Cal's home results show that when the competition is halfway decent, the wins haven’t come by big margins. The Golden Bears beat Colorado by 7, Stanford by 10 and lost to Arizona by 4. Their most impressive win was more spot-oriented as they took down UCLA 85-69 with the Bruins off a one-point loss two nights prior. Oregon has actually passed Cal for the league's best offense (109.5 points per possession) and the Ducks have for the most part played solid defense this season. This is an important game for both sides, especially Oregon who theoretically is still in the PAC-12 title hunt or perhaps an at-large berth. I expect a big effort from the road side which gives us value with Read more

Some bettors apparently feel that Jeremy Lin will win the MVP award

02.16.2012     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not satisfied with New York's 9-1 against the spread run, bettors are reportedly fighting to get to the window to bet Jeremy Lin to win MVP honors. We preface that this onslaught of betting action came at sportsbook.com, so it may very well be a marketing ploy. As well as Lin has played, he's been a part of just half of his team's games. And his incredible play is eventually going to cool off – as are the Knicks.

Bettors placed $3,000 on Lin at 100 to 1, $5,000 at 75 to 1, and $12,000 when the odds moved to 50 to 1.

NCAA Basketball Betting Trends: Another late season slide for Stanford

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State at Stanford -4 O/U 143

Article on Stanford's notorious late season slides under head coach Johnny Dawkins. The Cardinal enter tonight's contest against Oregon State having lost five of their last seven (2-5 ATS). Their only wins and covers came against bottom feeders USC and Arizona State. Stanford opened a 5-point favorite but was bet down to -4.

Stanford's recent slump continues a disquieting trend of late-season tail-offs or outright collapses during Dawkins' four years on the Farm. In his first season, the team won its first 10 games and was 13-3 before losing 11 of its last 18. The 2009-10 team was 10-9 before losing nine of its last 13. Last year the Cardinal were 10-5, then lost 11 of 16.

NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics try to find offensive niche

02.16.2012     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on Boston's struggles to create an offensive identity. Head coach Doc Rivers mentioned he'd like his team to play at a slightly faster pace heading into last night's game against Detroit. That resulted in 44% shooting, Rajon Rondo taking 27 shots (35 points) and 88 points. Kevin Garnett (hip) is expected back in the lineup for tonight's game at Chicago.

"Offensively I didn't really like the way we played the whole night, really," Rivers said. "Wasn't a lot of movement. I like Rondo being aggressive, but on the other hand we didn't get a lot of ball movement. This wasn't lost on offense. Defensively you give up 98 points to a team that's struggling right now scoring."

"It's difficult. When you have it going yourself, my teammates kept telling me stay aggressive," he said. "But at the same time I was just trying to get other guys involved. You know, when they're not missing, they have to come back and tell me to still attack and stay aggressive."

College Basketball Betting Tips: Making money on losing teams

After cashing our 20* Big Drive ACC Game of the Year winner on Boston College Sunday, I decided to do some additional research on losing teams and a follow up from our blog on February 13. I searched through the top college basketball money earners and ATS winners and here are the losing teams that are producing the most profit. Just another example of how losing teams can actually make money for bettors willing to leave their comfort zone and bet on “bad” teams; especially as underdog. Note that of the top-60 college basketball teams that have produced the most profit, only seven have losing records. I’ve also included those seven teams ATS record at home and their ATS record as underdog.

NCAA Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin travels to Michigan State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wisconsin at Michigan State -6 O/U 114.5

Looking to keep pace with first place Ohio State, Wisconsin travels to East Lansing to face Michigan State. The Spartans won in overtime in Madison, 63-60, back on January 3. Wisconsin though appears to be a different team, having won seven of eight since starting the Big Ten season 1-3. Meanwhile the Spartans are 9-3 with two of their three league losses by a single point. At home vs. the Big Ten, MSU is 6-0 with wins by 15, 34, 25, 16, 10 and 20. And according to Tom Izzo, this year's group may be the best defense he's ever coached.

"They're playing a lot better and a huge part of that is Taylor playing a lot better," Spartans forward Draymond Green said. "He's a lot more like what everyone expected him to be. Read more
