NCAA Basketball Gambling Preview: New Mexico in revenge spot against UNLV

02.18.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV at New Mexico -4.5 O/U 141

New Mexico looking for its second straight revenge victory after taking down San Diego State by 10 on the road Wednesday. Now they'll try to do it in The Pit against UNLV who won the first meeting in Las Vegas, 80-63. Adding to it is that the Rebels have won two straight in The Pit and four of the last five meetings.

Note that UNLV has not been a great road team with three wins coming in overtime against far lesser competition and losses at Wichita, Wisconsin, San Diego State, Wyoming and most recently, TCU.

“We’ve been fortunate in five years that we’ve had a lot of games with big-time atmosphere,” UNM coach Steve Alford said. “What gets added on to this is we’ve got CBS in here. We’ve got a national TV situation that we don’t always get. To have this, will Read more

Bracket Buster Free Betting Pick: Southeast Missouri at McNeese State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southeast Missouri at McNeese State
Recommendation: McNeese State

Looking to take advantage of a little travel here on Bracket Buster Saturday at Southeast Missouri bused the 11 hours to Lake Charles, Louisiana to face McNeese State. This after playing an emotional senior day game against the OVC's top team Murray State on Wednesday. McNeese State had difficultly in the early going against non-conference teams but like a lot of the Southland, they were forced to go about it on the road. McNeese beat a very solid Lamar team on this court earlier this season and acquitted themselves well in a nine-point loss to what has no become a 22-4 Southern Miss squad. Both teams are pretty even (SEMO 211 Ken Pom, McNeese 217 Ken Pom) but one is in its comfort zone and one has an 11-hour bus trip home. These meaningless games for both sides can be tricky but I think McNeese is worth a bet in some capacity – first half (-2.5) or game (-5).

Villanova likely to be with two starters as Maalik Wayns (knee, 17.8 ppg) is listed as doubtful and James Bell (ankle, 7.5 ppg) is out.

"Obviously we would miss both of those guys but this is an opportunity for some of our younger guys to contribute and gain experience," stated Wright.

Las Vegas Hotel struggles during the post-Hilton era

02.17.2012     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the former Hilton Hotel and Casino – now named the LVH (Las Vegas Hotel and Casino). Things aren’t looking too good these days both literally and figuratively.  The name change has also caused issues with its searchability on Google.

"The termination of the Hilton License Agreement, coupled with the fact that the property did not have the financial resources to purchase replacement exterior signage or to initiate a new brand advertising campaign to attract leisure travelers, has had a dramatic negative impact on hotel occupancy,'' his report said. ''Dramatically lower occupancy levels have, in turn, had a negative impact on other revenue departments (i.e. gaming, food and beverage and retail).''

Johnson also reported that the 2,950-room hotel-casino on Paradise Road needs $700,000 for exterior signage to replace the Hilton signs, Read more

NBA Handicapping: Milwaukee Bucks lack passion during recent skid

02.17.2012     11:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee at Orlando -7.5 O/U 192

Editorial on the recent slide for the Milwaukee Bucks. The team has lost six of their last eight – they covered only one pointspread (vs. Toronto) during that stretch.

And where is Scott Skiles in all of this? Fire, passion and competitiveness are the coach's strengths, and everyone is accountable. Skiles can do only so much with the talent that he is given, but no person on the planet can motivate grown men with guaranteed contracts. The responsibility runs both ways.

NCAA Basketball Betting Alert: Saint Mary's shorthanded for trip to Murray State

02.17.2012     11:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saint Mary's could be down two key players for Saturday's Bracket Buster contest at Murray State. Guard Stephen Holt (10.4 ppg) is out for two weeks with a slight MCL tear. Matthew Dellavedova (15.5 ppg) is doubtful with an ankle injury.

Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett told CBSSports.com that Dellavedova, the team's top player, will be a game-time decision with an ankle injury, and as of now it looks "doubtful." Holt, one of the team's most complete players, is out for the next couple weeks after suffering a partially torn MCL.

Bracket Buster Betting Free Pick: Northern Iowa Panthers at VCU Rams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Northern Iowa at VCU -6 O/U 125
Recommendation: Under

Let’s tip off the Bracket Buster weekend with a totals play against the money move. Northern Iowa travels to the Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia to take on VCU on ESPNU. The Rams are 11-1 at home, and note in their last eight home games, VCU has allowed the following scores in regulation: 43, 56, 49, 48, 60, 45, 55 and 49 points.

VCU (22-6) is in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association while Northern Iowa (17-11) is in seventh place in the stronger Missouri Valley Conference. Recall the Rams made a surprising run to the Final Four last season as an 11th-seed in the NCAA Tournament, and head coach Shaka Smart’s team is playing solid defense again this year. The Rams athletic guards have led them to the top spot in steals and turnover margin in the CAA. A letdown could be looming after the Rams 11-game winning streak was snapped Tuesday in a last-second loss to league-leader Read more

Canada moves to legalize single-event sports betting

02.17.2012     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Canada is currently taken steps to legalize single-event sports betting.

"Single-event sports betting would provide Canadian gaming operations with a significant competitive advantage over U.S. competitors," Comartin said in a statement on Thursday. "Studies show this slight change to the Criminal Code would generate about $70 million in wagering in Windsor alone."

VCU tries to rebound after a last second loss to George Mason on Wednesday. The Rams play host to Northern Iowa in tonight’s Bracket Buster tip-off.

"It's definitely not easy, but if you don't put it behind you, it'll hold you up for the next game," VCU senior guard Bradford Burgess said. "We are playing so well right now. We do have room for improvement, as always, but we want to get back to winning."

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Illinois' Bruce Weber on the way out

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We had Illinois Wednesday night in its 67-62 home loss to Purdue. The Illini fit a number of late season profitable profiles I use, and they we playing a Purdue team with redemption after losing to the Boilermakers 75-60 on December 31. Yet the information below with the surrounding situations is an example of the problems that can persist within a team environment, and how a lack of cohesion, chemistry and unsettled coaching can lead to less than desired results.

Now on a 0-4 SU/ATS losing skid and losers of seven of their last eight games, it’s clear that the Illini (16-10, 5-8 Big Ten) are a “towel tosser” team with a coach that looks like he’s on his way out. Bruce Weber has passed on other job offers in recent years including the Oklahoma opening last March; reportedly $17 Million.  In his 9th season at Illinois and six years removed from a Big Ten title and National Championship game appearance, the Bruce Weber era at Illinois appears to be over. Despite a genuine respect by his peers and support of his staff, Weber is now in a losing situation. The fans started to turn on him in the past few years and the pressure has mounted with less Read more

Bracket Buster Betting Preview: Valpo travels to Loyola Marymount

Valparaiso at Loyola Marymount -6 O/U 136.5

Bracket Buster action tips off tonight with Valpo traveling west to face Loyola Marymount. This is one of many potentially tricky late season non-conference game handicaps. For first place Valpo (12-4), the focus is clearly on winning the Horizon League regular season title which has a ton of importance with the top two teams receiving a bye and the top remaining seed hosting the title game. LMU may not be completely focused either which has been an issue for this team at times. The Lions are off a monumental road win at St. Mary's and have to very winnable league games left with San Diego and Santa Clara at home. They've already clinched a bye to the quarterfinals of the WCC Tournament.

NBA Handicapping: Dallas Mavericks getting it done on defense

02.17.2012     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Philadelphia O/U 181

Pretty impressive that earlier this season the Dallas Mavericks set a franchise record for holding 15 straight opponents under 100 points. And they are currently in the midst of another nine-game stretch of sub-100 basketball. Some of the success can be attributed to Brendan Haywood who has filled in nicely on the defensive end of the floor for Tyson Chandler.
